  • Let's take a deep dive into the 2023 Asus Zephyrus M16 gaming laptop with the Intel i9-13900H and Nvidia RTX 4090. While many aspects look similar to last year's, Asus made some major improvements this time around! We'll compare to last year's model as well as others like the Zephyrus G15 and ROG Flow X16.
    I hope you enjoyed the video! If you did, please like and subscribe to help the channel out, so I can continue making videos like these (and hopefully put them out quicker).

    Big appluad for this very well done review on the m16. I am also torn between m16 vs flow x16. In my country, there is only one build for each model, 4070 for flow and 4080 for m16. The price difference is about 500 dollars. Not sure if this price is justified for the gpu upgrade considering supposedly louder fan noise, higher temp on the key pad, the hectic with external display, and most importantly versitily and upgradibility. But I just wish i9-hx cpu on both of them.😂 Also, will you have a review on this year's flow x16?

    Hey Josh, great content as always! Looking forward to your review of the Blade 16 and hopefully a comparison with this Zephyrus M16. Which one of these 2 do you recommend based on your user experience? I'm trying to decide in between the Zephirus M16 and Blade 16 (both Mini-LED with rtx 4090 or 4080) as my daily driver for gaming, photo editing, watching movies and productivity. I intend to keep it for many years so it needs to be future proof. Thanks!

    Thanks so much for watching! Don't forget to like and subscribe :) I'm curious about everyone's thoughts about this laptop and what you'd like to see next!
    A couple notes:
    September 12, 2023:
    You should be able to work around the loud fans in turbo and quiet fans in Manual by using G-Helper. With G-Helper, you can manually tune each power profile to your liking. This should also fix the poor performing silent mode as well and maybe even spice up Performance/Balanced mode a bit. I strongly recommend this software over Armoury Crate!
    Older notes:
    The clip at 4:23 is the wrong foot! That's the Flow X16's foot. BUT you can see the giant foot on this thing at 18:01 throughout the Internals section of the video.
    About the external outputs, I noticed Jarrod's Tech did not have the same issue with his Zephyrus M16 (4070), yet others I asked on Reddit with the 4080/4090 model did. Jarrod's M16 performed as it should with one USB-C port tied to the dGPU and the other (thunderbolt port) tied to the iGPU, and he didn't recall any issues over HDMI. However, even when it is working correctly, Advanced Optimus is still designed to be disabled and for some reason stuck on the "Optimus" setting, even when it isn't actually in Optimus. You have to confirm it by actually checking the PhysX/Surround tab in Nvidia Control Panel. So that being said, it sounds like a software bug on the 4080/4090 models that could possibly be fixed in an update.
    Another note with the display, is mine did have noticeable screen whine (a high-pitched soft ringing noise) as well as most other M16 mini-LED owners that I talked to. All other mini-LED displays I've tested so far ('23 G14 and '22/'23 X16) have not produced that noise.

      I have the G15 with the 3070 model. Everything is great with this unit but I have a few gripes. The Fingerprint reader on my unit has never functioned from day one of purchase. Even after sending it in for repair it hasn't done much. Also the two pointy things at the back of the lid that help increase the angle slowly grind away to nothing. Now my pointy things are gone and they are flush with the lid. Those need to be made of metal.
      Overall good laptop. I would recommend a 200 watt usb c charging capability, Better cooling so a higher wattage gpu can be put in. Make even amd models have the larger screen and bigger rubber foot.

    The mini led backlight issue us disappointing though...
    And cpu parking? Why isn't this standard for Intel machines imagine only 4 p cores automatically on battery for battery life
    And the display out is related to thunderbolt it only works for display through Optimus otherwise no thunderbolt display

    Great video and review! I managed to buy a 4080 version with mini LED on best buy last month. There are some things which are confusing to me that you might be able to explain:
    What would the ideal settings be to game plugged in and save most battery when unplugged: armoury crate standard + nvidia automatic or armoury crate optimized + nvidia automatic? They kind of sound the same, but there's probably a difference.
    Also, does you model have a bug in which whenever you launch games HDR is greyed out unless you manually switch to the discrete gpu before launching them? Auto switching seems to make some games think HDR is not supported on my screen.
    Thanks!
    P.S.: If you ever have the time, you could make a quick video tutorial on how to properly setup the manual mode on this laptop / asus laptops in general. For those of us who don't know a whole lot about tweaking, it's kinda scary to change the settings/fan profiles there and then we're stuck with a really loud laptop on turbo mode lol

    Great reviews, both this one and the one you did on the 2023 X16.
    Any chance Asus could push an update to the dimming algorithm at some point? And what's the likelihood the Optimus weirdness will be addressed via update? I just pulled the trigger on the X16 with a 4070 and the mini LED panel, and I have no experience with Asus laptops, so I have no idea how good they are with post-release support on issues like this.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think Optimus has more to do with Nvidia drivers so that one is very likely to function better as time passes. The dimming algorithm I am yet to see an update for on any laptop that has a mini-LED screen so that one is really hard to say. I have kept my eye out though but I feel that it may be hardware-baked. It’s not BAD but I just wanted it to be better than last year’s mini-LED. I think if this is your first mini-LED then it won’t be too noticeable unless you’re looking for it.

    About the g16 having an intel processor, i think you should pick up the sku offered at bestbuy with the 13620H as matthew reported in his review that it was offering about the same battery life as last year's amd ones which ik sounds quite hard to believe but what i believe the reason is the 13620H having only 4 efficiency cores which are just enough for casual use to avoid turning on the p cores and hence offering much better overall average battery life in tasks like browsing and essay writing (if youre even gonna do that thanks to that damn chat gpt 😂). As for gaming on battery power, ryzen is gonna be superior at lower wattages hence offering better runtimes for similar performance as usually the power supplied is capped when running on battery.

    Hey Josh
    Hello from India!
    Your review is god sent for me. I wanted to buy x16 flow 2022 for the mini led and wanted to see it before buying. I went to the asus showroom today and they did not have x16 on display but the 2023 zephyrus was on display with the mini led. To be honest, i did not like the screen at all, the colours were not good, brightness was not upto the mark, i hated the screen. I thought even their vivobook series with oled displays are better.
    Came back home and started doing some research. I found out that the zephyrus has matte screen and x16 has glossy. Immediately started searching for a comparison and found your video where you mentioned the same thing.
    My question- I am a student and saved very hard for this. I am not a gamer and will only use it for media consumption and note taking and dont need a mac. I just need the best windows display our there. So is the x16 flow screen comparatively way brighter and better? It wont disappoint right? Help me out brother..also i am getting the 3060 x16 from 2022 for about 2100 dollars, good deal?

  • @WillG10923
    @WillG10923 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great and thorough review Josh! The fan noise and display issue are the only real turn-offs for me. Guess we'll see if either of those can be fixed in a software update or it just is what it is. One thing to note is ASUS recently put their 4080 version back on stock, which also comes with a mini-led screen, but it doesn't have the anime matrix. Pro of that is it hopefully gets a bit better battery life than the 4090 version and weighs actually less than the X16 (2.1kg vs 2.2kg).
    As you know, I'm waffling between this laptop and the X16. Weight/battery/price of the X16 are pretty much the same as the 4080 m16 and I don't really care about a touch-screen or attaching an external monitor. So it sounds like I need to decide if Glossy screen + better fan noise > better gaming performance. Think I'm missing anything else?

      I have both. The x16 is hard to love but hard to not miss too once your hooked. It produced an all common high pitched turbine whistle to the fans. It also had a noisy hinge I didn’t want to wait to resolve over time. They feel almost identical otherwise in daily use if you don’t fold it. Gaming the m16 clearly takes by the landslide. The display though amazing with the gloss it also turns into a finger printed reflective shit show fast! I figured I’d wipe it down once or twice a day and be fine but nope if you have fingerprints you can’t use it under florescent lights in an office setting because it’s terrible. You could simply never touch the display then it’s fine but keep it noted.

      @@BuiltInception Thanks! Good to hear on the screen. Honestly, I typically prefer Matte over glossy for that reason. I'm definitely leaning more towards the M16, but I'll ultimately make my decision next week when I'm back in the US (hope the 4080 is back in stock by then!). It does seem like based on reviews that the m16 often has more quality issues than the x16, but maybe that's just luck of the draw

    • @Valmed87
      @Valmed87 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the M16 may be better for gaming NOW but will it be anything special in a couple of years? The X16 will still be glossy and still a convertable with touch screen even in 10 years (if of course you want these things). Moreover, hoping that Asus will not discontinue the XG-Mobile project, the X16 can became way better for gaming than the M16 in a couple of years if you are willing to fork over a couple of thounsand dollars.
      I really dont see how anyone can prefer a matt display for entertainmend purpouses, given that the reflectiveness is no problem when you can have more than a 1000 nits.
      Long story short, I bought the X16 a month ago and I would still make the same choice today.
      PS: I usually avoid using the touchscreen a lot because yes, " it turns into a finger printed reflective shit show fast" but its nice to know I have it in case I dont feel like puting it on my lap and want to go tablet mode.

    The short answer is that Advanced Optimus, like Optimus before it, is a compromise hack that doesn't do what people think it does. You cannot "software toggle" a MUX switch without a reboot.
    The long answer is that Advanced Optimus works by connecting the display input simultaneously to both the iGPU as a display and the dGPU as a virtual display via a MUX switch and toggling between the two by disabling one GPU or the other in software, so only one is outputing at a time. However, the iGPU continues to run the driver and to use power even when disabled with Advanced Optimus, so you take a performance hit when you are TDP-limited contrasted with hardware-disconnecting the iGPU via Armoury Crate MUX settings and rebooting. Hardware-disconnecting the iGPU forces NVIDIA _not_ to use Advanced Optimus, which gives you better performance over disabling the iGPU with Advanced Optimus.
    The main reason ASUS standard operating procedure is to connect some USB-C ports to the iGPU and others to the dGPU isn't power saving. Both Intel and AMD mobile integrated chipsets only support PCIe-tunnelling when connecting to the iGPU, which means that USB-C ports can either be Thunderbolt 4/USB-4 or be connected to the dGPU, but not both. ASUS chooses to have one USB-C port for PCIe-tunnelling and one for display performance. However, with Advanced Optimus, this can cause problems, because when Advanced Optimus "switches" to the iGPU via "virtual MUXing" by disabling the dGPU output, it disables displays not connected to the iGPU.
    Advanced Optimus is kind of a waste of time. It doesn't offer the same performance of hardware-disconnecting the iGPU via MUX + reboot. What it does offer are an additional false "just plainly better" sales bullet point and additional problems. I'm not too happy that ASUS finally decides to cave and to add Advanced Optimus to their laptops, but NVIDIA really is the marketing king so I get why ASUS finally caves.

      You bought the 4090? 15,000 is way too low of a GPU score. First thing you need to rule out is a bad thermal paste application. So install HWinfo, open graphs for core CPU temperature and GPU temperature, run Time Spy, and see if you were constantly hitting the max temperatures throughout the run. Sometimes you can tell in the Time Spy built-in graph too if you notice some sharp spikes downward on the GPU clock speed line during the graphics tests.

      It is because of stock, absolutely. Ryzen 7000 laptops are just now starting to slowly release and we're nearly halfway through the year 🤣 I definitely think AMD processors on those laptops would've benefitted them greatly since AMD doesn't need much wattage to perform well, which would likely allow the GPU to hit it's max wattage potential more often.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! And I’ll paste some of what I said in a similar comment but adding to it. That’s a tough one! The Zephyrus is definitely much more portable and a more balanced laptop. The display is also better on the Zephyrus M16 and G14 than the Legion if you value screen quality. Even if it’s the IPS model, it just has a wider color gamut so more vivid colors. Battery life is better as well on the M16 and way better on the G14, and both of those can perform really well on battery, USB-C, or in Balanced mode (I think Silent mode GPU performance is bugged until they put a bios update out). Silent mode on the G14 is god-tier. The Legion just wins in max power. So max CPU and GPU performance are higher on the Legion. In games it’s probably like 10% more fps on the Legion. But it definitely is a bit chunky and quite heavy. The G14 almost feels like a small model of a laptop in comparison to the others. It’s just so insanely portable and compact it’s crazy. To get that much performance from a 14” device is just crazy to me. And it doesn’t get too hot or too loud either. In fact, the G14 is the quietest of the three! Personally I’d choose the G14 but I’m also someone who values portability and battery life. If it was going to be in one spot 99% of the time I might choose the Legion.

      @@JoshCravesTech that’s a great summary, much appreciated! Each laptop has a feature that I like. Thanks so much for the video, you are the first one digging into the feature I need to know, the Mini LED. As a Macbook pro user, I know exactly what it feels like to watch dolby vision movie on an excellent Mini Led screen, that is why my chioce for the gaming laptop has been the M16 with RTX4090 and Mini Led so that I can have a similar gaming experience as I do with movie on my macbook, unitil watch your video. Because as you mentioned, the brightness algorithm on the M16 just give the M16 lower brightness than the flow 16, which only has 512 dimming zones. I want the screen to run at its peak brightness when I need it, and if the system just turn down the birghtness, then it is absolutely pointless for that 1000 nit screen.
    Could you please let me know did Asus provide any update to fix that issue? Or that screen still has lower brightness? If the issue remains, I would probably go for the ROG Duo 16 with RTX4090 and Mini Led, by the way, how does the Mini Led on that one perform? I recently noticed that ROG does not even label the Duo 16 as HDR on their website, which is very weird, seems like their most expensive laptop now does not deserve that HDR title just because it does not have their "Nebula Engine".

      Thanks for watching! So yeah, even though the algorithm turns it down a bit sometimes (and this applies to ALL Asus laptops with this panel of 1,024 zones, including the Zephyrus Duo), it still hits extremely bright levels in HDR content. Sometimes it’s brighter than the Flow, sometimes it’s a bit dimmer, it’s strange. But overall I’d say without having that comparison I’d be very happy with this screen. The brightness is blinding either way! It’s absolutely beautiful and miles ahead of any other gaming laptop display this year.

      The 3070 to the 4070 is unfortunately not a major increase in performance. You will see nice gains on the CPU side but on the GPU side it’ll be an upgrade still, just not night and day. That’s Nvidia’s fault though for making the 4070 so mid this year. If you can go for a 4080 laptop that’s where you’ll see much bigger gains.
      However the M16 chassis is pretty nice and if you’re getting the mini-LED display you’ll really love the upgrade there!

  • @jacobrichards720
    @jacobrichards720 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I’ve got the 4070 version and got terrible performance in gaming until I turned off Optimus. I’m not too upset about that because when I go from work to play I’m not in a rush so a 2 minute restart is not that inconvenient. My fan noise hasn’t been an issue with the default curve but it’s also a less powerful machine. It stays WAY cooler compared to last years 3070ti version and is much more quiet too. The lack of mini led is no big deal to me because I hate the halo effect. I’ve been spoiled by my OLED monitor for my desktop but honestly the laptops panel is still great. If I had money to spare I’d go for the 4080 version since the performance difference between it and the 4090 isn’t as big as the difference between the 4070 and 4080, but if you want the 4090 I feel like you’re the kind of person that wants the best gaming machine and there are better 4090 laptops for that because the power limitations matter a lot. Overall I think it’s the best gaming laptop when you consider portability, ascetics, panel quality, and performance. There’s no other product that gets so many things right.

    Hey josh, do u think that the 4070 of the m16 is worth considering?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do, yeah. The 4070 is a good one. Just know that because of the way the 4060 and 4070 cards are, that smaller/thinner laptops like the G14, Flow X16, Zenbook Pro 14, etc. will all reach the same level of performance. They all top out around 90-100 watts and don’t perform any better beyond that, which is why there’s so many thin/light laptops that are reaching performance they couldn’t do before this year. So if you’re going for the 4070 M16, you have to want it for more than just the GPU.

    the 4080 model of the M16 also has the mini-LED display... and you don't have to pay the extra for the silly (and heavy) anime matrix thing on the lid

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very true. You lose about 10-15% of the performance but it’s not a bad deal considering the lesser price and having it weigh a little less

  • @jsVfPe3
    @jsVfPe3 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your reviews are fantastic. Very detailed. I've never heard anyone mention those Mini-LED issues, but it looks quite annoying.
    What is "the best" laptop series available right now in your opinion? I'm coming from having a desktop PC with an OLED monitor and an M1 Macbook, but now I need a Windows laptop to do it all. Thinking Asus G14 (probably in 4080/IPS spec) but I wish it had a glossy screen... going to a matte one after using Macbooks and OLEDs for years feels sad. Thanks!

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I’d say G14 is my favorite of the year. I also wish it had a glossy screen but you get used to the matte when the brightness is as high as it is! If you have the budget, go for the 4090 mini-LED!

    Just curious if fan tuning and external output issues have been fixed?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There still hasn’t been any bios updates for this laptop since I bought it. Which is really confusing because the G14 has had 4 bios updates now and that one came out later than this did. So no, still the same quirks for now. Although some people with different models like the 4070 one have reported not having the same external output issue, which is even more confusing lol.

      @@JoshCravesTech Thank you so much for the update. I'm looking at 4070 (I know you praised about mini-LED but since I will use external monitor a lot). So maybe 4070 is ok with external output, though the fan tuning still concerns me.

      @@jtjt376 yes from what I heard, Turbo mode is still broken. But the workaround is to use Manual mode for now! Or honestly, using G-Helper might be a better workaround. G-Helper is an alternative to Armoury Crate that I’ll be making a full video on soon.

      Normally they’re quick to fix issues like that, but I’m actually surprised there still hasn’t been a single bios update for this laptop since it released 😅 it’s gotta be any day now, but we’ll see. I’m seeing bios updates release on other Zephyrus models a lot right now

      Idk, I’m salty about it. Seems to be the same as last year’s M16 but with a spec bump so probably would perform a little worse than the current M16 with 4060/4070, but if I find a good deal I might check it out!

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to hear that. The 4080 performs up to about 40% better than the 4070, which is a pretty huge increase in performance. Whether it’s worth the price is up to you though. I have the 4090 G14 and I absolutely love it. It was way too expensive for sure but I’m still happy with the device personally.

Ips display but still has all the nebula color gamut certifications, lower powered gpu so quieter fans, one monitor setup and that only for gaming so can just switch to dgpu whenerver i wanna play... its just perfect and $1950 at bestbuy currently, once it drops to about 1600-1700 in bestbuy sales, imma jump on it!😂
