    Between Lebron James, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Russell Westbrook, we have an MVP race where there really is no wrong answer. Each could receive the award, and there would be legit complaints from all three sides. While entertaining, it has made for a confusing story line as we wind down the race to select a winner.

    You know, I don't really care who wins the MVP.
    One thing's for sure though:
    Whoever wins it, there'll always be that quote: ''He didn't deserve it.''

      I do acknowledge great basketball playing. But the majority of "fans" will criticize whoever wins the MVP. In other words, everyone will be angry and will start the ''it's rigged'' cliché because their player didn't win it. No matter who wins it, I personally will be happy for him, rather than starting a rager just because some other dude deserved it more than the other.

      If Westbrook wins then Kobe Bryant was robbed at least 2 more MVPs

    Be sure to follow my new Instagram (in the links below & description) and other social media accounts to reach me for the Q&A.
    Today we're looking at the MVP race, which looked pretty clear around December, and has now evolved into a four man race that could go to either candidate. I definitely think it's the most confusing I've been around for, because there are so many good arguments for each player, whereas in some of the other races like 2015, although there were other candidates, I kind of knew who would get it. However with where we are right now, it could easily not be who we think it'll be. So what do you think?

    I've thought about this a long time and I realized why the MVP vote happens the way it does. For example when wilt averaged 50 and 25, that was the best season performance ever but he did not win MVP because him averaging 50 did not help his team win. Later in 1967 he went on to get 31 triple doubles and lead the league in assists thus winning the MVP and the ring. It is about what one's team needs to win, not how much stats someone puts up

    • @mrslick58

      Matei Constantinescu good point but you have to look at the supporting cast as well, if Westbrook had, Ryan Anderson, Gordon, and Luo Will I'm sure their record would be way better, Westbrook's best teammate is oladipo or kanter

      Hayah7 the most ppg was Elgin Baylor in 1962 with 38 and he didn't play in half the games. Although Russ is making history, he is not making his team better. Wilt made history with his 50 ppg season but he did not win MVP because he shot at one of his lowest % of his career, and his team had less than 50 wins

    Interesting bit of information, the MVP might not be as close as everyone thinks. Basketball reference has a tracker for potential league MVP based current season stats and voting results from the previous years. Basically, it uses math to predict the chances of a player winning MVP. And there's one player that's clearly above everybody else if you like to play the numbers game. I'll break down the top 5 below, but you can check out the full thing here if you'd like: www.basketball-reference.com/friv/mvp.html
    1. James Harden (42.5% chance)
    2. Kevin Durant (17.0% chance)
    3. Russell Westbrook (10.4% chance)
    4. LeBron James (10.3% chance)
    5. Kawhi Leonard (9.9% chance)

  • @jclarkev
    @jclarkev 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    @Dom2k PLEASE READ THIS!!! PLEASE! at 7:53 you say that you couldn't see them giving Lebron the MVP over Harden because of team record... Lets talk about what MVP is. it's the Most Valuable Player award which should mean the best player on one of the best teams. So what's the best team in the NBA, as we learned last season it isn't the team with the best record, it's the team that wins the title. So right now lebron is arguable the best player of all time but definitely the second best player of all time and the best player still currently playing. On top of this Vegas odds, after KD's injury, has the Cavs as the overwhelming favorites to win the title and they have the best record in their conference regardless of how they stack up against the records of the Warriors, Spurs, and Rockets. So lebron is the best player on the team most likely to win the championships putting up statistically (since everyone loves stats this season) the best season of his life. Meanwhile Harden AND Westbrook are both on track to shatter... not break but absolutely SHATTER a 35 year old MOST TURNOVERS BY A SINGLE PLAYER IN A SEAON RECORD! i'm sorry that everyone gets over obsessed with triple doubles but from a purely logically and basketball minded point of view Lebron is the clear MVP and people need to stop trying to find excuses to not give him the award he deserves! PLEASE READ THIS AND TELL ME ANY FEEDBACK YOU MIGHT HAVE! Thanks and have a good one man!!

      he puts in more effort than anyone no one said anything else, he just doesnt elevate his team the way lebron and harden have, his wins prove that, michael never won a championship back when he was averaging 37 it was until he learnt to elevate his team mates that he won.

    I think if Russell Westbrook averages a triple-double for the season he should win MVP. If he averages a triple-double he has had the best individual season ever by a player in NBA and ABA history. But I doubt he will because of the hype around Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.

      LeBron James FG% 54, 3p% 38, matches played 60, +/- 425, ppg 26
      James Harden FG% 44, 3p% 35, matches played 67, +/- 406, ppg 29
      Kawhi Leonard FG% 49, 3p% 38, matches played 58, +/- 370, ppg 26
      Please if you are looking at these numbers, who is the most Valueable Player. to me the Most Valueable player is obviously LeBron James. If you add to that the Historic part. He is fresh off 6 straight NBA finals and is the defending NBA champion. It will be wrong to give the MVP to someone else not LeBron. This is Basketball and to be the MVP, you will have to be better than LeBron James but no one of these guys are actually better than LeBron. That is according to the numbers. Numbers don't lie. It should be Unanimous LeBron James. He is the most efficient and the most Valueable to his team than Harden to his. According to the numbers, LeBron is more valueable to the Cavs than harden is to the Rockets but by 11 points differential. Westbrook not even close.

    If Spurs win the west, its Kawhi winning the MVP. If GSW holds on the 1st seed, Harden will take it. Lebron isn't getting the MVP award in a weak Eastern conference. Cavs will be in the Finals again just by showing up. Boston and Wizards do make it a little interesting in the East ar least. Westbrook even with historical numbers sad to say isn't enough to win the MVP with OKC not in the top 4 in the West.

    • @Michael-eu4pf
      @Michael-eu4pf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      XZGAMING Only reason it's easy is cause they have Lebron. His greatness makes the entire conference weak. The east is actually better then the west, record wise. So i could argue east is tougher.

      Isaiah Thomas is a better candidate than DeRozen but LeBron is still the MVP according to the numbers not Media hype which is mostly based on baseless argument and disregard for the Facts. Same fake news media told everyone Hillary was going to beat President Trump. It is fake news to suggest that in a draft featuring all these 6 players, a team would actually pick someone with 10 points worse efficiency than LeBron as the Number one pick. It is outrageous. LeBron should be Unanimous MVP.

    Russell Westbrook is averaging a triple double and his team is the sixth seed in the west....he deserves the MVP award. after everything that team went through in the off-season, losing two big pieces ( Durant and ibaka) and still make the playoffs on Westbrook back. he's MVP hands down...that's just how I see it. I'm not hating on the other candidates, I'm just really impressed my his performance this season.

    lebron deserves it. think it about it, because the cavs without lebron are still have a top 3 team but they cant win without him, with all the good players on the cavs lebron has some of the best stats in the league. theres only one ball and lebron still has sone of the best stats, however kwahi, harden, russel all play for teams that dont have players who constanly have the ball like kyrie, or players that shoot as mush as korver, jr smith and kevin love and lebron still has amazing stats, the others are the only superstars on their team. lebron is also playing the second most mins in the league. another thing is that when lebron left miami they couldn't get passed the second round in the playoffs while lebron took them to the finals this simply shows how important to a team is. he has been to the finals 7 times and 6 times in the last 6 years. lebron deserves mvp

    Kawhi Leonard is without a doubt a better all around player than James Harden, currently has the best record in the NBA, but doesn't deserve the MVP award over Harden??? Your MVP is having a historic season in turnovers and shoots 44% which isn't bad unless you're comparing him to Kawhi.

    LBJ is my MVP because he is the Defending champion and with all the injury problems the Cavs are having after consecutive trips to the finals, they are still the top seed in the East. History should be a factor. He brought the Cavs back from a 3-1 deficit in the finals and this season with all the injury problems and rest, he has the Cavs in the top of the East. LBJ has a better stat that all 4 candidates. He is most efficient and has the best winning percentage and his + and - is way better. I know there is a conspiracy by all Jordan fans to deprive LBJ of his 5th MVP. They make the argument about two players minus LBJ and frame their arguments with useless stats that doesn't make sense. LBJ is the best player and the most Valueable Player and the Defending champion and the 6 times straight finalist and the 3 time champion and should be the 5th time MVP because his team is the top of the east regardless of all the injury they face.

      James Harden FG% 44, 3p% 35, matches played 67, +/- 406, ppg 29
      Kawhi Leonard FG% 49, 3p% 38, matches played 58, +/- 370, ppg 26
      Take a good look at what has been happening this season in the league. Who is the Most Valueable Player? Isn't it obvious it is LeBron James?
      Russel and Harden are having great seasons but they are not having a better season than LeBron James who is more efficient and more important to the Cavs than any player to his team. The +/- tells how important a player is to his team. Even with 7 games less than harden, LBJ still has 11pts more than Harden in the +/-. Present this stat to Skip Bayless who always talk about +/-, and he will tell you that without a doubt, LBJ is the most valueable player. Harden and Westbrook are having great season but they are not efficient enough to be MVP over LBJ. If LBJ is at 45fg% averaging 26ppg, then you can say it is Harden or Westbrook, but he is at 54fg% averaging 26ppg. It will be so wrong to give someone else that MVP trophy. I know you are not a LeBron Fan but you know what the above numbers mean. LeBron is the MVP.

    Harden:50.4 total adding up the 5 major stat categories.
    LBJ: 45.5 total adding up the 5 major stat categories.
    Kawhi: 37.3 total when adding up the 5 major stat categories. So far Westbrook has 3 points Harden has 2 LeBron has 1 and Kawhi has 0. Up next record Westbrook/Thunder:47-35
    Harden/Rockets: 55-27. Lebron/Cavs: 51-31.
    Kawhi/spurs: 61-21. Westbrook now has 3 Harden has 4 LeBron now has 2 and Kawhi now also has 3. Finally for the seeding.
    Thunder=6th
    Rockets=3rd
    Cavs=2nd
    Spurs=2nd
    So final results
    MVP: Kawhi co Harden with 6 points each
    Runnerup: LeBron with 5 points
    Honorable mention Russ with 3 points

    I think the determining factor in the MVP voting is going to be how much value voters put on defense. At this point it's not a two horse race, but harden and Leonard seem to be the front runners. If we break this down, harden scores more, but Leonard scores more efficiently, so we call scoring a wash. The spurs certainly started with a better team, but since Aldridge went down, kawhi has stepped it up, and the spurs have climbed the rankings, but it can also be argued that because harden has less to work with, it makes it more impressive that he has the rockets in the position they're in. Call team play a wash. The two key differences are this: harden distributes better than anybody, and Leonard defends better than anybody. In the end, it comes down to which of these aspects is more important to team success. This becomes very difficult because they play two different positions. Certainly, it is incredibly important for a point guard to rack up the assists and get his team going, but for a small forward, it is much more important to lock down the other teams small forward, who is often that teams most dangerous player. They both do an incredible job at their position, and ultimately, I think it's Leonard's ability to defend any perimeter player that gives him the slight edge.

He leads everyone in the contest in all statistical category except Free Throws. He is more efficient than Harden and Westbrook by double digits and doing so averaging 26ppg. I wish it is Harden vs Westbrook but adding LBJ in the contest makes Russel and Harden look like number two and 4 pick in a draft. Those who say LeBron shouldn't be in the conversation because he has Kyrie and Love who are all stars, should answer the question of why even with those two players his +/- is still way higher than everybody's? Let me answer the question, it is because He is the engine that makes the Cavs work and if he doesn't play, they are worse than Lakers. Kevin Love is way overrated and over paid.

    THIS is why we need a MVP and MOP award.

  • @victorsullivan9107

    Let's start an elimination bracket of sorts to see who would win MVP. Since we're lucky to have two sets of two players doing similar things, that will make it easier. Both Harden and Westbrook are putting up crazy triple double numbers, carrying teams on their shoulders, and just generally dominating the game on offense. Meanwhile, both Kawhi and LeBron are leading elite teams and dominating both ends of the court. So for the first round, we have Westbrook vs. Harden and LeBron vs. Kawhi.
    Westbrook v. Harden:
    Both are putting up comparable stats in points and assists but Harden is taking much fewer shots, he's shooting at a higher efficiency, and getting more assists. Westbrook has 32 triple doubles this season, and Harden has 16. Westbrook leads the league in points, and is 2nd in assists, while Harden is 1st in assists and 3rd in points. The stats are generally fairly close, but you could make the argument that Westbrook has better numbers overall. However, since the individual stats aren't really conclusive, let's look at the impact they have on their teams. Neither of them are playing on teams with all-star talent, unless maybe you want to count 6th-man of the Year candidate and 3-point contest winner Eric Gordon. The Rockets are 3rd seed in the West and have the 3rd best record in the NBA right now. The Thunder are 6th in the West and tied with Atlanta for 10th best record in the NBA. Maybe the Rockets without Harden are better than OKC without Westbrook, but you can't honestly say they're 9 wins better. The Rockets are succeeding because of James Harden playing PG, and his impact on the Rockets is more than Westbrook's impact on OKC.
    So that puts Harden above Westbrook in my opinion.
    Kawhi v. LeBron:
    Both are fantastic 2-way players. Both impact their teams more than most players in the league. Both have good chances of leading their teams to #1 seed in their respective conference. But when you compare both of them to each other, it's very clear that LeBron is doing better than Kawhi. He's got significantly better stats in most categories, and Kawhi is only putting up 0.1 more points, 0.1 more blocks per game, and 0.7 more steals per game. Better defensive stats, but insignificant numbers overall when you consider the fact that LeBron is putting up 5.5 more assists, 2 more rebounds, and shooting 5% better from the field.
    So I think there's no question that LeBron deserves it far more than Kawhi.
    Final Round- Harden v. LeBron:
    So with the process of elimination, we've come down to Harden vs. LeBron. The leader of the defending champion Cavaliers vs. the super-star PG who's been a significant part in turning the 41-41, 8th seed Rockets of 2016 to the currently 46-21, 3rd seed Rockets of 2017. Harden is putting up better stats than LeBron and his team has a better record in the West than the Cavs in the East. Harden has had two 50 points triple doubles this season, an NBA first. He's the first to put up a 50-15-15 game. People are talking about Westbrook doing something that only one person has done, but Harden is doing things that NOBODY has done. LeBron is just doing the same thing he's always done. Dominate the game in every way imaginable. It's pretty close, but I think it's clear that James Harden should win the MVP.
    My vote is for James Harden.

    Harden because he has the best story. Being known as a pure scorer and shooter last season and being constantly criticized for the other parts of his game and then turning it around this season to become a true mvp, he definitely deserves it for making that change in his game.

    The most important factor for MVP IMO is results vs adversity. Team record is typically an excuse when people like a player from the best team. So even if they're not the actual MVP that year. To give that player an excuse for more votes they'll say his team has the best record and he makes his teammates better. When the truth is the roster is stacked and said player isn't being targeted like his competition because there's other teammates that can burn you on the floor with him. Examples are Nash and Currys first MVP trophy. Both we popularity contest trophies from hype and being on the most fun team to watch and root for.

    the difference between 6th and 4th seed in the west is 5 games... if the thunder have a good run at the end of this season and/or Utah have a terrible end to the season and let the thunder steal the fourth seed would that make russell's season any better? IMO no, i dont think it'd change anything, the man would still be averaging a triple double and he is still as deserving of the reward if this didn't happen.
    as an OKC fan i hope they can steal the fourth seed because that'd be awesome but imo it wouldn't change anything.
    if the thunder did steal the 4th seed at the end of the year would that change your order of
    1.harden
    2.kawhi
    3.westbrook
    4.lebron
    or would the order stay the same?

    the mvp race is primarily based on the top 1 or 2 teams in wins. it's easier 2 get great #s on a horrible team(cousins on kings, love on timberwolves,lillard on blazers etc)as an individual. lebron 4 mvp, put his #s against the league & any1 on the team & his team record is #1 in the league.
