    Today I`m covering possibly the most confusing, unclear question of what exactly makes a player an NBA superstar. As you`ll see, many players qualify but still aren`t considered one quite yet.

    Jimmy Butler is a franchise player and he excels on offense and defense, same with John Wall so are they just lacking popularity or is something else keeping them from that SuperStar level?

    • @Richardcolonel
      @Richardcolonel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thetopquestionier what's keeping them back in my opinion is that they both have good stats lines but the stats aren't good enough and they're not even on good NBA teams

    • @CassiusLove_
      @CassiusLove_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javon Clayton so where do we draw the line between star and SUPER star. Lebron is a superstar but if that's the high level can a player like Kyrie whose not on his level get there. Same with Durant and Thompson or arguably Dame and Curry

    • @Richardcolonel
      @Richardcolonel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javon Clayton that's why I said their stats aren't good enough meaning they're not talented enough. Combine that with them on bad teams means they're not close tonsuperstar

    • @CassiusLove_
      @CassiusLove_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javon Clayton Lebron Curry and Durant are the superstars so are people like Thompson and Kyrie not superstars because of their own stats or because they aren't the same level as those guys. On its own Kyrie has a superstar level game but when compared to curry and lebron its not as good

    if your reason for Kwahi Leonard not being a superstar is because casual fans don't want to watch him play, then your a causal fan. A real fan, or a die hard fan, would love to see his defense and efficiency, and his basketball IQ. I just can't fathom someone saying "Kwahi isn't a superstar." If he's not a superstar, the sky isn't blue

    • @cedricsarfo2707
      @cedricsarfo2707 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I think a superstar just depends on stats. Dom what you said about a player dominating one part.of the game, helps his stats. Then stats itself of course. Also a player being a two-way player helps his stats. It all comes down to either stats or wins. With wins though, if mangemant doesn't put a good team around you, there's only so far you can go. That's why for me Demarcus Cousins has to be a superstar. he puts up great stats on a team whose mangemant is being run by 5 year olds. That's just what I think

      Cedric Sarfo Guess What, a SUPERSTAR is someone that transcends the league. Which means you know who LeBron or KD and def Curry is if you don't really watch ball. Leonard gets hurt because he plays for the spurs which is a team that does not get attention.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cedric Sarfo Dom is saying that Kawhi is def a superstar people just don't put him down because of lack of name recognition. IMO he's an obvious superstar but the reason he's not considered one by some is not because of casual fans but more of because people feel he doesn't take over a game effectively and make his presence known like other superstars. Like he doesn't strike fear into his opponents when he shoots or something which is completely untrue considering NBA teams respect him a lot but some fans just aren't scared of him and think that everyone else must not be too

    • @cedricsarfo2707
      @cedricsarfo2707 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Dreams Worth More Than Money Did Tim Duncan transcend the league? People weren't lining up to see him play. But you can't argue that in his prime he wasn't a superstar. He had a very simple way of playing basketball, wasn't appealing to a causal fan, but he was defitnitely a superstar

    If Kawhi Leonard isn't a superstar I don't know what is. The notion that he isn't because he has a reserved personality is nonsensical. It's the NBA, not X-Factor. The point is to win championships.
    I also suspect the same argument could've been used against Larry Bird, or Jerry West. It's malarkey.

      Gal Dagon It’s really just the team he’s in. In a team like the lakers or the heat he’d stand out. It’s just the style of play of the spurs that hurts him. He’s not able to be as flashy as other superstars, without having to pass first. So it makes him look too reliant on his team.

    • @TheDAWBOG
      @TheDAWBOG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Letter A Damian Lillard is not a Top 5 Point Guard. I'll name you five better, Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, John Wall, and I do believe its a toss up between Kyrie and Lillard but for me I go Kyrie, but Lillard is definitely #6. In terms of Top 10 player, also wrong. I'll names you ten players better than Lillard. LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, Paul George, James Harden, Chris Paul, DeMarcus Cousins. I will say this though, Damian Lillard is definitely box office and will bring in money and has superstar potential but I think he needs to improve a little more before he can really be considered elite. But Lillard is certainly on the rise.

    Curry: back to back MVP, best shooter
    Westbrook: athletic freak, triple double machine
    Kawhi: defensive POY, efficient offensive game

    Davis: great player when healthy
    Questionable superstars:

      Charles Delair I consider Kyrie a one-way superstar who lacks court vision. He is, in my opinion, not a "superstar" because he lacks elite playmaking ability and cannot play well on the other end of the court (which is half of the game). I'm not hating though. I love watching him play; he is an offensive juggernaut that can score like no other and is definitely the best finisher in the NBA.

    *Sorry for my voice in this one, I was sick*
    Easily the toughest thing to clearly define in the NBA; what does it mean to actually be a "superstar?" I`ve shied away from this video because seemingly everyone has a different opinion on it, and as you`ll hear in this video, its still tough to pinpoint who is and who isn`t a superstar even when you have a good idea of what you look for in one. What is your list of superstars in today's league?

      blitzandgoo its a different tier of talent. Look at it this way, jameer nelson was an allstar, but he isnt as great a player as Chris paul. Guys like Paul george, James harden, demarcus cousins are in competition with the rest of the best players every year, they have to prove they are the best. Where as the likes of
      Lbj, Kobe, CP3, DWade are proven elite once in a generational talent that are heads above the rest.

  • @OsyrisCorleone
    @OsyrisCorleone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I'd say Irving and Lillard are superstars without a question mark. To me, anyone that can put fear into their matchup on a one on one is a superstar. Sure Carmelo is a scary ISO matchup, but he's not going to score the ways Kyrie and Lillard will score. Lillard will pull up from way way behind he 3 point line and make jumpers forcing you to tighten your defense, which won't matter because he can get to the rim with his speed. Same thing for Kyrie except Kyrie doesn't pull up from that distance often, but is a better finisher than Lillard by a little due to the volume of his FGs from there.

      dan t T Mac was really young and left before he entered his prime. I was talking about the current team and his people underestimate Lowry so much. He plays both ends and plays his heart out every night. He even got 3 place votes for MVP but he doesn't get the respect he deserves because he plays up in Canada.

Also Kawhi doesn't have a major shoe and isn't the best at marketing himself. That's the only reason you can even think about denying him superstardom if that. Kawhi is definately a superstar

I'm talking about those people who say for example "oh Steph Curry is so much better than Andre Drummond, look at these stats, Andre Drummond is garbage, look at the points he gets!!" See how this example says Andre Drummond is bad and they compare a point guard to a center who is a defensive beast yet they say he's garbage.

    - leonard (has the defense and offense)
    - harden (rockets would be trash without him, carried team to playoffs)
    - cp3 (passing skills, playmaker, defender, can score)
    - lillard (got his team to the playoffs without a good supporting player (has cj but still he isn't fully developed yet))
    - george (came back from a bad injury and still got his team to the playoffs and almost got them to the 2nd round)

      Mine is simple. I have 6 catagories. 1st is superstar, this groups includes people as good as lebron to low end superstars like Irving, klay and Blake. 2nd is star and these are people like Marc gasol, Conley, Drummond, green and Melo.
      3rd- these are people who aren't stars but are better than just role players. I call these better than avegre so people like ibaka, olidapo, reddick, Levine and the big 3 on the lakers.
      4th - this is the role player group. These include people like jr smith, shumpert, nick young, robin Lopez and Livingston
      5th are below avegre players like shoot can't think of any. Paul perice? Meta world peace, or people who are like in and out of rotations
      6th - bench warmers, in-out of the league type players.

    Bonafide Superstars:
    Steph Curry - Do I really have to explain this one?
    Kevin Durant - Elite scorer, former MVP, all around amazing player and draw.
    LeBron James: Once again, do I even have to explain this one?
    James Harden: Lackadaisical on D, sure, but an amazing passer, scorer, and he can carry a team on his back
    Russell Westbrook: Stupid athletic, great scorer, almost averaged a triple double.
    Paul George: Carries his team, great two-way player.
    Near/Questionable Superstar:
    Kawhi Leonard: Amazing defender, can shoot the ball, just hasn't proven himself scoring wise. Remember, his career high is barely above 30 points.
    Carmelo Anthony: He can still score and play high level basketball, but his age is probably going to catch up to him these next couple of seasons.
    LaMarcus Aldridge: Great scorer and rebounder, plays on a team where his stats really can't shine that much.
    Klay Thompson: Great two way player, stuck in a sidekick role of sorts. On his own I feel like he'd be in PG's situation.

    superstars for me are players that can take over games when needed too. Player like K leonard, Kyrie, Lillard, Melo, Wade, Klay and Aldridge are clear superstars. If you think Klay is just a catch and shoot player you really need to look at his game he's not just a catch and shoot he can finish around the rim shoot dribble pull ups and defend, just cause he doesn't need to handle the ball as a pg doesn't mean he ain't a superstar, and for all those who think leonard ain't a superstar you don't know basketball period.

    I can't help but notice the similarities in the play styles of Kawhi and Andre Iguodala. They're both on really good teams, they're arguably the two best on ball defenders in the league, they've both won Finals MVP, and they've both proven they can score the ball. It'd be cool if you could compare the two in a future video.

      ***** He averaged 25 points a game 7 assist and 4.0 rebounds and carried his team to playoffs with some help from McCollum. People thought the Blazers were going to be a lottery team after Aldridge left and he took them to playoffs. He's the most underrated player in the league

    • @sparxx9537
      @sparxx9537 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Javon Clayton guy damian is easily up there. i mean he brought a team who literally lost 4 starters the season before to the playoffs in the next. second he is arguably the most clutch and not just scoring wise or game winners but the way he steps up his game when it matters. third he is easily comparable to curry. both can shoot ridiculous but obviously curry got the edge but damian is more athletic plus not a liability on defense like curry and also damian when it matters is more clutch where as curry or westbrook would turn the ball over instead of execute. Example the west finals and nba finals both game 7s.

Clippers have the 2nd best center in the NBA, 3rd best PG in the NBA, AND pretty damn good PF with a solid bench. 5th seed is pretty fucking good with who he had.

    Draymond IS a Superstar and here's why:
    - Does have the Championship attitude
    - Can takeover games defensively and offensively with his passing and ability to run the GS offense
    - We seen how they played WITHOUT him in Game 5
    - You could make the case that Draymond is the most important player on GS because he causes those mismatches because he's too quick for the average Center and too strong for the 4 and he RUNS THE OFFENSE allowing Curry and Klay those spot up threes.
    He defends , He cans score , He wins, and he's got that attitude, and his impact on the game is felt. He's a superstar.

      i agree with a lot of what you said but i disagree that e is a superstar yet, without curry and klay he wouldn't be nearly effective he steph pull a lot of attention from defenders allowing him to score. He isn't nearly as effective on the offensive end as any of the nba superstars. The way i look at it is if draymond went to almost any team in the nba his effectiveness would take a huge hit along with almost all his numbers.

    • @mikolkindlejr249
      @mikolkindlejr249 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      westin evens naw bro if u put Draymond on ANY team they'll be a playoff team imo he affects the game in WAY too many ways . Scoring is just one part of a superstars repertoire. He CAN score but in GS offense it's not in the teams best interest for him to look for his shot first.

    No question, Leonard is a superstar. I cannot remember a player who has such an impact on a game on both ends of the floor since Jordan and Olajuwon. His demeanor on the floor just makes him a quiet assassin. Before you know it, he can hit you with 25 to 27 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assist, 3 steals and maybe 2 blocks. His intangibles are what makes him a superstar. The man is a stat sheet filler and you would not know it until the end of the game. Monster player!!!!

    First thing, love the videos Dom. Good channel for hoop heads.
    Now about Kawhi. I think this will be the year , w/ TD retired and parker and gino accepting their age and roles, that Kawhi truly becomes face of the spurs and solidifies himself as a true superstar.
    Also for a future video and something I like to think about is:
    who do you think will be the best "up and coming" PG, SG, SF , PF, and C in the league in 5-7 years?
    Like KAT from the twolves would be a perfect example of a guy I was thinking of for this list. Not established talent but maybe still even in college (if you watch college ball?)

      Deez Nuts Curry is a good defender. Not elite like Kawhi but he is an elite offensive player unlike Kawhi. The thing is Curry is a better scorer, shooter, passer and a better offensive player in every single way while being a good defender. Kawhi is a good offensive player but not elite like Curry and is an elite defender unlike Curry but since is Curry is a much better all around offensive player, he's the better player. Also Curry is a better leader and has able to consistently lead the Warriors to W's.

      Curry honestly plays like sharpshooter on 2k he just runs around screens and Jack up shots. But I don't want my player to have a weakness like he was being exposed in the playoffs by Westbrook and Kyrie so the better player would be kawhi bkuz we can get a steal or block and possibly score on the other end as well

    I heard someone said once that NBA superstars most of the time brought something new and unique to the game of basketball. And that's one of the main reasons people love calling them Superstars.
    Dirk brought the one leg fadeaway, Curry took 3 point shooting to a legendary level, MJ brought his fadeaway and Iverson reinvented what we call now Modern crossover.

  • @vpizzuti96

    I think Kawahi is a superstar but what kind of takes the attention away from is his character. He is very modest and humble. A typical "Pop" player which theres nothing wrong with that. I am an NBA superfan and I think Kawahi is one of the best players in the league right now because of how versatile he is on both sides of the ball, But normal NBA fans don't see much charisma coming from him like they do from very animated players like Westbrook and Curry.
