- Turns out there's more to the Waterless Lake Glitch than we originally thought! This has been console-verified, and doesn't take too long thankfully. Not as much math behind this overflow, but it's still pretty interesting. Definitely a solid entry to the most pointless glitches ever discovered.
Bonecrusher initially discovered the Waterless Lake Glitch with LZS, and I discovered a method of pulling it off with trigger manipulation. The other day, I thought about whether or not the developers would use a counter for the lake, and asked Bonecrusher to test it out. The result is more texture glitchiness!

"This one I can forgive them for..." Yes, of course. But those times when they neglected to consider the fact that some players might spend 4.5 or even 416 consecutive years doing a particular action, and that they would figure out how to get the console to run that long? Unforgivable!
Haha yeah, it sounds silly. It just seems weird to me that they didn't cap any of these counters, it's 1-2 lines of code that'd take a few seconds to write.
+Stryder7x Well, they probably wanted to save as much space as possible because deleting content to free up space was probably much harder back then.
That tends to be why older games have more unused content, as well.

so baking a cake 4 1/2 years is acceptable and so is cracking a frozen lake 258 times very acceptable :P
And hitting a block for more than 400 years.
And talking to a toad 21 times makes him move again after moving.
Now, We don't have to wait 422 and a Half Years to finish the game...

Just a little heads up you might find handy. The third ice break "texture" (which is actually a model) is the beginning of the shatter animation of the ice breaking, being used for one frame before it's pieces go flying off and is replaced by the fourth model of the open lake and the ice shatter particle effects.
Do you have an image of this? I played the video frame by frame and was unable to see the third ice crack model
I don't, but, I can infer that the third model is used in the game in some manner, but perhaps not the manner I initially said now that I've looked back at the clips. The third cracked model has all of the pieces separated, and they are considerably more transparent than the ice in the previous two models. You can see there are geometric pieces scattered in with the sprite particles when the ice sheet shatters. It's quite possible that the glitched third model is in its T-pose or reference frame, but that particular pose of the model may only be used to generate the initial locations of the pieces. The actual shatter animation may start on a frame where it's already partially shattered, the glitched flat state is only there for reference.
Sorry for sounding combative or contradictory, it's just something I felt you might want to know.

Just in case this leads to confusion, the reason the title says "258" instead of "255" is because 255 is simply the maximum value of the counter, not the number of times it takes to respawn the sheet of ice. Since it takes 256 jumps to overflow, (starting from 0) doesn't respawn the ice until it cracks at a value of 1, and also doesn't increment beyond a value of 3 unless you hit it twice, it takes 258 jumps from the start.

This may seem like a random question but since it's paper Mario 64 related, im hoping that's okay. Is it possible to beat the final bowser fight before/without obtaining the peach beam? And if so, how can it be done?
You can deal 99 damage by combining a ton of attack increasing badges, Merlee's Spell, and a maxed out Tidal Wave, but even still, he does not die until the second phase. He starts Phase 2 with 1 health if you deal any damage higher than 97

PhillipDude53 I'm doubtful that eating a cake that was baked for 4.5 years would kill you, since it's effectively spent 4.5 years being sterilised. Tbh, I'm not sure it would even still be there after being in an oven that long :/

Hi Stryder. Thanks for helping me with LZS! I think I may have found another softlock glitch. Not sure if this is actually a glitch or just my game or me being stupid but in Chapter 6, where the Lakitus are supposed to fight you at the maze, they didn't! I was spinning and jumping and then suddenly I was in the maze and skipped them. The reason this is a softlock is because you can't actually get the Crystal Berry as I think the flower's text changes based on whether or notyou've fought the Lakitus (maybe). Either way, I can't progress in the game.
I have a great love for how in depth you get with something literally no one cares about. It never occurred to me that a paper Mario glitching community existed.

Well, since it impacts how the cartridge is properly read, it can cause many different effects. Most of them game-breaking. Corrupted music, broken textures, and game crashes to name a few.
