It's possible to make an enemy crash Paper Mario. Yeah, it takes some setup on behalf of the player, but then you can do nothing and wait for Paper Mario to crash :)
How do we do that? Well, with particles.
The "!" that appears above enemies when they notice Mario is considered a particle. Merlee spell storage is a glitch that can set up a particle storage. Paper Mario has 96 available slots for active particles, and if we store enough of them at once, the game will crash.
Enemy hitboxes get disabled during particle storage as well, so they will wander around Mario, spotting him repeatedly, but unable to actually make contact. This often results in a looping "!" spawn, allowing us to crash the game by remaining in place.
The Merlee spell storage, particle storage, spring storage, and zipline storage glitches featured in this video were discovered between 2015 - 2017. However, it wasn't until recently that I realized the enemy's "!" was a particle. Which led to this video idea!

In the very beginning of our universe, there was nothing.
This proved to be too much for Paper Mario, who promptly crashed.

Hey now, barring the mentioned spring in this video, most crashes aren't exactly easy to pull off, as often you have to perform loading-zone storage [which requires several frame-perfect jumps] to skew your position in another room/warp when you shouldn't
Gen1 Pokemon actually is a god damn mess because most bugs/terrible design choices you don't even have to try hard to find. Some examples:
>Psychic being immune to Ghost instead of weak to it
>Leech Seed and Toxic running off of the same exponential damage [ie if you had both on you, Toxic would do 1/16 your HP, LS would do 1/8, next turn Toxic would do 3/16, LS would do 1/4, etc.]
>oh arceus the Special stat
>>Side note, nice of Pokemon GO to have essentially brought that back, because there's only one Attack and one Defense stat, which makes Blissey an absolute monster
@@WhimsicottFanatic In fairness, both Paper Mario and Pokemon Gen 1 are glitchy because they did the most they could with the space of their medium. As you said, most of the big Paper Mario crashes require a lot of work to do things in an unintentional way, and most of the worst crashes and softlocks in Pokemon are the same. The few bugs in normal gameplay hardly made the game unplayable, and even once realizing some of the mistakes in their code (hey, mistakes happen) it was well before the days of being able to patch shit, so it was just about fixing those problems for the next set of games. The devs put in a lot of hard work to get the games running, and I think they did a damn fine job with what they had.

Yeah, despite how messy Gen 1 is (I will agree that it is held together by sheer hope) it’s pretty stable all things considered. Even the MissingNo glitch, the most common glitch in the game, isn’t exactly something you’ll find just by playing unless you *really* wanted to see the old man catch something then felt like finding a Pokémon on Cinnabar Island

Finally, the one we’ve all been waiting for.
I have been binging all your videos for the last few weeks, which prompted me to dust off my old paper mario cartridge and give it a go. The last time I played this I was barely old enough to read. I used to just watch my sister play and she would read the speech bubbles aloud for me. This has nothing to do with this video; I just wanted to thank you for sharing your hard work and dedication to a game that was undoubtedly a fond part of many people's childhoods.
