Hitting a Shy Guy for 49 Minutes Crashes Paper Mario

- The title is accurate, this game is a thing of beauty.
For a while, I have been wanting to cover some of the glitches in Mario's House, and I stumbled upon another game crash when I had the idea to test "Shy Guy raising" on the Nintendo 64. Like many floating point crashes, this one is explained by the Nintendo 64 arithmetic unit struggling to track our coordinates beyond a certain point. In this case, it is the y-value, though the game crashes when the x or z coordinates reach this same limit too.
I think the video does a pretty good job explaining this one on its own, but an extra detail worth mentioning is the sound effect of hitting the Shy Guy cuts out when Mario goes far enough offscreen.
PistonMiner helped verify my theory about the crash being related to our coordinates, and also double-checked some existing information on the Shy Guy's properties. Be sure to support him for his work!

Though it's difficult to pinpoint who discovered the out of bounds in Mario's House since it's one of the oldest documented glitches in this game, Mov_Mario_Paper appears to be the first one that found the Shy Guy out of bounds. Here's where you can find him!

My copy of the game is old and unfortunately crashes after playing for about 30 min. So playing Paper Mario perfectly normally crashes Paper Mario.

The Shy Guy's home is updated every time he is hit, so we can raise the Shy Guy by performing a trick called Shy Guy Raising. Unfortunately he can't leave the room, so if you wanted to bring all the Shy Guy's together for one big Shy Guy Jamboree - I'm sorry, but it's not going to happen.

Definitely. Even a decade after Paper Mario's release, the game was thought to be one of the most stable Nintendo 64 games. Glitches featured in these videos are pretty difficult to stumble across for the most part. Some of us put a lot of effort into discovering them though, and look where we're at now :)

I just played through Paper Mario for old time's sake, and the second or third time I played the Slot Machine, the Shy Guys appeared sideways. They came out turned sideways (like PM:TTYD's Paper Ability) and ran around like that. Even after multiple battles, they stayed that way until I left the screen. It might have happened because I was using Spin Attack, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I immediately thought of you because you're PM64's foremost glitch expert. Has anyone else ever seen this before?
