He's talking high performance engines being used at high performance levels. My Lexus 3UZ engine (V8 4.3L) loafs along most of its time under 2,000rpm and the oil still looks perfectly pristine at 2,000miles, so I'll stick to 4,000 miles. 😊

    • @chuckschillingvideos
      @chuckschillingvideos 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Not only that, he's talking about forced induction engines - in this case a TWIN TURBO with a scary high compression ratio (scary high for turbos, and what would be a fairly high compression ratio for a naturally aspirated car) of 9:1. The GT-R engine is a high revving, close tolerance engine pushed to the extremes of its performance range - it's basically a race-tuned engine and not in any way comparable to your typical low reving commuter slug.

I had a different Toyota dealership perform the last free/complimentary oil change. When I performed the next oil change, I discovered:
    - they over tightened the oil filter housing
    - they over tightened the drain plug
    - They cross threaded 4 skid plate bolts. Two of them broke when I tried removing them.
    - I dont usually remove the "secondary" oil filter cap...the little metal cap that allows you to drain oil out of the filter housing so it does not make such a mess when you remove the actual filter housing. So it was two or three oil changes later when I discovered that the dealership didnt re0lace the gaslet for the "secondary" oil filter cap.
Do your own maintenance and make sure you know how to do it properly.

Mechanic shops will literally charge you $70 for an oil change and they use the cheapest oil and cheapest in house oil filter which by the way they might not even install as most places leave your old filter as is which isn't right but its business. He’s correct to a point - as a mechanic myself of 28 years 10,000 miles is too long in any car . Many factors come into play , environment, type of use ie short trips long trips , engine stress ( both how it’s driven and how highly strung it is - turbo - higher boost etc ) my professional opinion in simplest form is 5-6000 miles for easy freeway driving , 3,000 miles for higher strung engines and / or shorter trips , 2000 miles for highly strung engines ( modified ) that’s also driven hard even if it’s just one good boot on each outing . Using only synthetic oils . Follow this and you’ll never have a varnished / dirty or sludgy engine in your life and it will last a long time . Also never ask 100% from your engine when booting it unless your at the 1/4 mile . Giving it 90% feels just as good when on your own and that leaves alot of reliability in the bank so to speak .

But for an average daily driver, when the manufacturer(eg toyota) says 10,000 miles, I’m pretty comfortable that changing oil at 5,000 mile intervals is going to provide a very long and reliable engine service life that will exceed the economic life of the rest of the vehicle around the engine.

This is great advice if you’re Japanese and live in Japan. The average yearly mileage for them is 4300 miles. So he’s basically saying change the oil every 6 months. Maybe he would be mind blown to find out that annually we drive our car 4 times as many miles than they do in Japan. If they used our oil intervals they’d be changing their oil every 4 years lol.

David, I feel like there are many variables here that can't be taken into account for a general answer to this question. Is the oil conventional, semi-synthetic or full synthetic? Is the engine turbocharged or naturally aspirated? Etc. Could you do a deep dive into oil change intervals someday? It seems to be becoming of more interest to more people, and after years of lengthening intervals, there is pushback now. What's the balance between going crazy (i.e. car will fall apart around a perfect engine) and reasonableness/cost for the average car owner?

If you use a good quality full synthetic oil I see no reason to change it that often. I have 3 vehicles that I change the oil on every 7,500 miles. The Toyota 4Runner has 281,000 miles on it. Got it when it had 102,000. I've done 24 oil changes on it. If I did every 3,000 it would be coming due for it's 60th oil change. How much have I saved? About $1500.

For a GTR or high end sports car I would definitely understand the 2K oil change, since they are driven harder.
But for the typical consumer car, definitely not. That too expensive and unnecessary to the average consumer to change every 2K miles.
Just stick to the 3K oil change for conventional oil and 5K oil change for synthetic oil.
And for the love that’s all mighty, do NOT do 10K oil changes, if you want your engine to last. That’s just a recipe for your engine to start burning oil and sludge build. If you don’t drive your vehicle enough during the year to reach the correct oil change interval then just replace the oil anyway for that year.
Also, no fluid (coolant, transmission, etc.) is “lifetime”, please change them at the correct intervals.
Correct maintenance intervals is pretty minimal in the grand schemes of things, since vehicles cost an arm and a leg to replace.

Most Canadians who care about their cars will change their oil at 5,000 kilometers or every six months - whichever comes first.
Doing so is good practice - especially since our cars start at temperatures well below 0 degrees celsius for half the year.
Changing at the following intervals is fine - over every 6 months - whichever comes first.
    5,000 kilometers = 3,125 miles ✅
    6,000 kilometers = 3,750 miles ✅
    7,000 kilometers = 4,375 miles ✅
    8,000 kilometers = 5,000 miles ✅
Many local Toyota dealerships recommend changing oil at 8,000 kms = 5,000 miles :-)
5,000 kms to 8,000 kms or every six months - whichever comes first.

I worked as an engineer in the engines dept. for an American manufacturer. We performed a similar test. We took an oil sample every ~20hrs for analysis. We found the metal concentration (ppm) in oil (like iron from liners, copper feom bearings, etc.) increase proportionally with age of oil. The more oil breaks down, worser the wear gets. The viscosity of oil itself keeps reducing but artificially increases due to mixing of soot. This increases acidity and further increases wear. Typically oil is tested only for viscosity. There is much more to it and changing oil frequently increases age of engine. No doubt. Oil change interval from manufacturers also take into account total cost of ownership. OEMs don't want to spook customers asking them to change oil more frequently, increasing maintenance cost. If one can afford a GTR, they can definitely change oil more frequently.

When you start your engine for the first time after changing your oil, your engine does not get any lubrication for a few seconds until the oil pump builds pressure.
This means you are doing a slight amount of damage primarily to the main bearings every time you change your oil and start the engine with no oil pressure.
Modern oil lasts at least 5-6K miles before any noticeable breakdown in viscosity. The real problem is you start to get fuel contamination after about 5k miles which thins out the oil.
