      I'm mildly surprised that Dark Samus blending into Samus's idle on landing didn't get called out. Then again a do remember this having been mentioned in another video, so maybe you decided it wasn't worth commenting on here.

    I think for a video you can do a tier list based on every character's costumes. Rank the characters full set of 8 as one entry instead of all of them individually.

    A bit late to point this out, but if you just summoned a second CPU in Training mode, the Shotos would all behave like any other character and you wouldn't have to worry about their autoface mechanic. Guess it will be helpful for future aerial showcases I guess.

    I'd love to see one of these for Dash Attacks. It's a unique category of moves that all need to incorporate the momentum generated from a running start, and I want to see how all of these characters generate a sense of impact relative to their dash speed.

    Some of Sora's hit sounds are weird because they aren't actually ripped from KH, they're an odd recreation of those sounds with the default Smash sounds slapped on top of them. I personally think they sound fine, but I also think the default Kingdom Key hit noises that are actually heard in KH sound WAY more impactful.

    I like the idea of Zelda having lightning kicks for one of her moves, because it represents her wisdom a bit with the fact you need to be pretty precise. It also fits relatively well with her defensive playstyle as a fast and strong out of shield option. But it was definitely not a good enough concept to be used for 3 of her aerials, especially considering she generally isn’t a melee attacker and I feel like having only one or two kick attacks overall would have been more than enough for her moveset.

    I always thought the pits where backairing by stabbing with a similar posing to shulk, or at least with both arms stabbing from the same side, now that I see the blades are on each side of them the pose actually feels a ton more awkward lol

    Banjo Kazooie’s rat-a-tap rap should have been f-air instead of b-air. It’s too prominent of a move in their game to have been out into back air. Then again that probably would have meant ripping off Duck Hunt’s f-air. Also should have at least been a kill move since it’s such a good move to fight with in BK

    Sephiroth's back air is legitimately one of my favorite moves in the game, it's just really satisfying to use and *especially* satisfying to hit. Glad to see it get the recognition it deserves here, since most people who talk about Sephiroth tend to focus on other, more absurd moves of his like Gigaflare, Octaslash, or his up smash and up air.

    I am definitely on the side that loves Zelda’s forward and back air because of how insanely fast they are, how powerful they feel and how precise it is to land. Does it belong on Zelda, I couldn’t tell you I know very little about that series, but I want that move to stay around somewhere.

    Personally I love charizards, I think how relatively slow it arcs kind of fits how thick charizards tail is (in comparison to someone like Ridley or mewtwo) Usually tail attacks need to be fast to convey power, like a whip, but I think of this one more like a wrecking ball, just replace the wrecking ball with a ball of fire. Wrecking balls aren’t about speed why they hurt, it’s about weight and power. The lower arc speed for me helps to show that weight. And of course the fire is amazing, but that’s standard for ultimate. It’s an s tier for me but I can still understand feeling it isn’t snappy enough for its strength

      I get the wrecking ball thing, the issue for me is that while the ball of fire may look dangerous, it doesn't look like it carries momentum. Which of course it doesn't, fire is massless, so that all falls on the tip of the tail instead, which is obviously very skinny.

      @@MockRockTalk that makes sense, that’s a very important distinction for charizards tail that I forgot which is the weight being at the base instead of the end. My wrecking ball comparison really doesn’t make much sense, I guess I just like how it feels. Smacking your opponents with a flaming tail never gets old to me.

    When you put Ridley like that, I can think of other back air animations that would’ve fit him better. Make him rear back and chomp on the opponent, or copy piranha plant and shoot out an explosion of fire behind him. Would’ve felt much more satisfying.

    3:44 btw that little flip is one of the best things in Kirby. In nearly every game, he does a flip at the top of a jump

    "hip" in japanese was kind of a weird loan word and is generally used to describe buttocks as a whole. that's why a lot of moves are named "hip drop" or "hip attack" in video games even when they're using their buttocks to attack. it's kind of used to both buttocks and hip but is almost always used for the former, especially in beauty and video games

    Perhaps you could do a ranking on character jumps, both grounded and midair. I think a lot of thought goes into the way they jump, including personality, physics, and weight. A number of heavyweights look like they are giving effort to hurl their entire weight into the air.
    Granted, the near-universal 3-frame jumpsquat removed the sense of gravity of their leaps in many characters.

    Id go with down b. That tends to be the most diverse category of move on par with neutral b, containing all sorts of abilities that you can analyze on so many different levels.

    Sonic has a pretty direct comparison because in Brawl he does follow through on the action without stopping (and is also quicker and more expressive), but in the end hard to say which is better

    cloud and sephiroth both have incredible animations and particle effects throughout their entire moveset and even all of their other animations. sephiroth moving slowly and deliberately before delivering a massively strong hit is absolutely wonderful, and he stays in good control of his sword the whole time, very fitting for sephiroth's menacing stature, silhouette, and general characterization. the one wing gives all of his animations even more flair and it just looks so incredibly cool.
    cloud is less slow and deliberate with his movement than sephiroth but he still keeps control of his sword pretty well, and all of his exaggerated "cool anime swordsman" poses are really great.
    the particle effects for both characters are also really nice; sephiroth's black gleam on his sword makes it look so sinister and deadly, which again fits perfectly with who sephiroth is as a character. cloud's green flashes with his sword look really cool too, though a bit less connected to his character and more to the visualization of mako energy in his games.
    the particle effects for sephiroth's other animations are also all great. I'd say the wing's particles stand out the most though, the feathers falling off it make sephiroth look so ridiculously cool.
    cloud's particles for limit break also look really great, I adore the blue glow and the way it makes all of his specials even brighter and more flashy, cross slash especially gaining a lot of flair from it

    hey, can i just say i deeply appreciate you for making these? i've always had a fascination for video game animation, and i've been particularly fond of how smash handles it with ultimate having most of my favorites (emphasis on most, sonic's animations were best in brawl imo..)
    but yeah, picking apart every animation from every character is quite the taking and it makes for very entertaining discussion and analysis
    heck, smash got me to love sora through his animations alone and i know little to nothing about kingdom hearts and he's become my top 3 most played characters (according to smash's statistics)

    I really like Robin's animations with the Levin sword as a whole. it's a weapon that deals damage based on your magic stat, not your strength stat, so there's no need to put much force into it when the sword's already doing all the work

      I'd assume the name was chosen because of that.

    Ryu and Ken's Bairs are based on their Neutral Jump Heavy Kicks from SF2 and the animations themselves are changed in every other game. The animations look kind of stiff because the original attacks are kicking in front of them. I think they just wanted to give them a Bair and didn't want to make one up

    Quick comment on the Banjo Kazooie Bair, you found the move interesting that Kazooie attacks with top-down-middle, but the is actually a direct reference to the games where your main airial is literally this move but left-right-middle

    If Bowsers personality in smash was more like the Mario and Luigi series which has him as more of an arrogant, show-off’y kinda character they could have made him point in the direction his feet were facing in his back air

    One thing that I think is really cool about Joker (I’m really biased towards him btw) is his animations, and back air is a perfect example. Almost every attack in smash has some kind of spark or slash effect and Jokers lacks that, which would seem detrimental, except it makes it much more fluid. He gets his red streak instead on his knife which references Persona 5 and the stylish aspect of the game. It just adds a whole new level of sleek and satisfying to the move.

    btw, "hip" moves in peach and daisy's kit. In japanese "hip" is a word borrowed from english and basically just means "butt". and is used in situations where they might not want to use the equivalent japanese word for butt. I think the localizers for Smash made a very reasonable localization choice in leaving it as "hip" since we have the hockey equivalent of a "hip check" which is how I thought of those moves before learning more about japanese. They are definitely using their butts tho

    You kept naming a 'reverberating arena' sound effect. If you lookup smash hit sounds, you can find a video with all of their names. Pretty sure the one youre thinking of is the Heavy sound effect, which has a light medium and heavy version

    I work overnights at a convenience store stocking the shelves. It's really nice putting your videos on while working - it helps me stay focused funny enough. Smash tier lists are a great format for that since know the game pretty well but hearing you talk about something I don't think about much is nice.
    I also really enjoyed your hearty retrospective of BOTW, hope another one is in the works (I know they take a whole lot of work)

    The reason why Wii fits back air is doing that is because its supposed to be mimicking a pose where your on the floor and you push of the ground with your hands arching your back while your legs are flattenedout.

    Hearing Mock talk about Palutana and how he likes Shield Bashing attacks reminds me of a fantasy book I read, where Tika, a Bar Maid, was forced to fight towards the end of the book, and ended up being able to kill the monsters not with her sword, but rather her shield.
    The second book even goes out if the way to say, and I quote "Turned Shield Bashing into an art."

      Now that you mention it, yeah. I know Mock hates Fair and adair so almost definitely. I feel like he’s too hard on Ridley but I might be biased since he’s one of my mains.

    As a shulk main, I always thought shulk’s back air always looked so awkward compared to the smooth “slash” back air that other sword fighters have, but mock rock putting shulk in s tier helped me realize how good of an animation it really is. A stab actually works the best for shulk because the monado is a special type of sword that uses some kind of beam to *eject* out of the sword’s center which actually acts as the blade, adding to the impact of the move. The trash frame 19 startup of shulk’s back air also helps emphasize the cool pose that shulk does during the windup of the move.

    Surprised to get a video on back air animation. Something I noticed with some new platform fighters, mainly Nick All-Star Brawl and MultiVersus, is that they seem to be forgoing back airs and just have the characters simply turn in mid-air (NASB doesn't even have forward airs). I guess I can see how not having a back air might be easier for new players, and even having back airs does sound kind of silly if you think about it. In Smash 64, most of the characters were from platformers who could turn mid-air from their home games but not in Smash for some reason. Just something kind of interesting I noticed. Hope the next animation ranking video will be about up smashes.

      The abandonment of back airs is something I feel a little mixed about but overall I think it does make decent sense, especially for games with a lot of control methods. NASB allowing you to control the drift of your nair without having to worry about accidentally inputting a different move, losing a few frames to reset the stick, snapback, etc. is really nice for example.

      @@MockRockTalk I can see both sides of the argument. Having back airs made gameplay feel a little bit clunky, so not having them can make gameplay feel smoother. Then again, back airs do offer more variety, and there are Smash characters I can't really imagine not having their back airs.

    For me Ganondorf earns a place in S-tier just for the impact alone, but I also like how they differentiated the animation in Ultimate since the held "legs crossed pose" just looked wrong on him.

      yeah even without the reverberating sound effect is has a really strong impact, and the reverberation seems to mostly be reserved for attacks with a large surface area like a kick or bash

    Ridley Dash Attack should be the tail scrape from his brawl Subspace fight, a multi hit that drags you along and leaves him airborne and as safe as PAC Man dash attack

    One thing I would love if Piranha Plants back air could send out an angelable projectile, with like the strength of Marios Fireball.

    In regards to Peach and Daisy attacking with their "hips", that is a result of the fact that the English word hip is often used interchangeably with the b*ttocks in Japanese. Legends of Localization did a neat article on that topic. Look up "Legends of Localization False Friends" for that (TH-cam is autodeleting when i post a hyperlink, I think)
    You'll actually see this all the time in the Smash games. For example, Yoshi's Down Special was called "Hip Drop" in 64.

    Fox actually does shake his leg during BAir. It's not visible at full speed but I assure you that it's not from interpolated frames.

    IMO Mega Man's back air is S tier. It's creative, it's flashy, it feels really good to hit, I always love when this move hits because it also feels good to kill.

    Link's back air should be a shield bash. Not only would it be a lot more memorable _and_ actually let him make use of his shield outside extremely niche projectile scenarios, but it'd also represent the shield attacks from Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. You could even keep it as a fairly weak combo move in line with its current design, since in the Zelda games the shield bash is more meant to open up enemies, not really to do much/any damage on its own.

    I feel like wolf using the like claw looking blade things on the toes of his boots as part of the attack could be interesting, especially since it's one of his only attacks that isn't with his claws, and even most of those being pretty sharp like his blaster.

    I think something worth considering with Zelda's - you mention the kick doesn't suit her, and I can totally get that, but for me it feels like kind of a hint toward the Sheik persona? I love that she's got this martial arts ninja kick hidden in her kit, she's a princess who's secretly a ninja (And I know her design here isn't specifically OoT Zelda but we all know Link and Zelda are amalgamations of their versions from various games).

      And it's enhanced by magic anyway, which is very Zelda. It's just cool as an unexpected clean power move from a character that on the surface doesnt look like she would do it.

    1:36:33 I personally like the kinda smack feel it has at low pecents, specially when you whack someone who was in the middle of an edgeguard and their whole momentum just ceases to exist. Strong "stop right there, you're being hype" energy. At mid to high percents, it does have that "oh, that now kills. Okay" vibe.
    Sadly (or not), you don't get to see Sora's Back air that much due to Nair and Fair shanenigans.

    I disagree with Ganondorf's bair being the wrong hitsound, because it sounds a lot more like a punch, y'know? Like what you're punching marth right in his stupid face, you expect it to be a punch, and in smash you'd expect that to send him flying offstage.
    The chunkier one doesn't really do it all that well, it feels like it shouldn't be a powerful kill move. I feel like it should kill for sure, but only at like 120-130, or as a spike offstage. It also feels way more like a kick move than a punch move, so it fits a lot more comfortably in my eyes.

    This is a little bit of a weird idea but I feel like a 'jump' animation (and probably landing anim) tier list like this would be interesting. Jumps are probably one of the most overlooked animations, and so I think it'd be neat to see how they all work. (Maybe their double jump could be a part of it too, or even in another list if it's worth it.)
