One thing that annoys me is that besides Sephiroth’s classic route and the WOL Boss Rush, there’s no easy way to refight the bosses, they could’ve made the fights accessible by the spirits menu, it would’ve made so much sense!
Also I wish the Miis were included in more of the side modes like Classic Mode and Smashdown

4:46 The text was a big factor in why the trophies got removed too though
You're forgetting the game is multi-language, and this amount of text just multiplies absolutely everything that has to be translated per team with all the language options, so the text being removed is a big part on saving development time, it'd have been like 1000+ pieces of text to proofread

    • @italolxd3128
      @italolxd3128 ปีที่แล้ว +89

Considering PJiggles perfect example on Reyn, it would probably be easier than you imagine. Sure, it would be more time, but it would also be worth it, considering that Smash Bros. not only wants you to experience your favorite characters crossing over but also find out about new characters.
Also, programmers wouldn't write those texts. They would probably hire "lorepeople" or something like that who would know or research those characters and write matching descriptions. The biggest issue for the development team itself would be to asign texts and a "game of origin" label to spirits which is probably done in under an hour by the average programmer.

    • @juanrodriguez9971
      @juanrodriguez9971 ปีที่แล้ว +69

And not only the text must be translated, but must also be properly localized, which is specially harder if an specific franchise already had problems with the localization like characters having different names per game, and some names also MUST be changed because it can mean something bad in another language, like Manuela from FE3H in Spanish, since Manuela is a funny way for us to refer to masturbation, and imagine having to do that for games those were not localized in the first place.

Honestly, I get it, but I don't care.
Telling people about series (or even just games or characters) they might not know about is very much inline with being a crossover, especially when including so many relatively obscure series and spinoffs.
Fights leave you guessing way too much, and are just not entertaining past the first time. If anything they feel like a chore. Having descriptions you can just read in your spare, more chill time would add so much.
The main problem arises from accuracy and localization, both of which having ways to work around it. Especially from one of Nintendo's most high budget titles.
If they wanted me to care about ARMS, the least they could do was tell me what each character is like, not just ambiguously show me something that I can far more easily misinterpret.

(Wii) models. I'm going to guess that most of the models are ports/reused, but even then, posing and optimizing them is a big undertaking. Though with all that said, simply giving descriptions to all the spirits would've run into issues regardless, like some of the ones you mentioned. The spirits already have weird rules around them (e.g., all the base game Pokémon spirits use the Global Link art aside from Detective Pikachu, and no human characters are featured), so I imagine writing descriptions would make things even more complicated on that front. Who knows how much help the copyright holders give in terms of lore/descriptions too, since Smash has had incorrect trophy descriptions in the past.

In defense of spirits not having written descriptions, there are a LOT of spirits in Smash Ultimate - and like you said, one would be hard-pressed to find someone who is familiar with *every* franchise in Ultimate well enough to write a description for not only every major one, but every minor/obscure spirit in every franchise. Of course a game like Smash would have multiple writers, but even still, I suspect that a lot of the time spent making those descriptions would have to be spent researching, or even talking directly to the games writers FROM those many franchises.
As someone who's done games writing in the past, there's a ton that goes into it, and especially for a massive crossover game like this, pretty much every entry would have to be cross-checked with the lore bibles (or the next-best thing) of every single franchise to make sure that characters and lore aren't being misrepresented. Never mind the fact that they'd probably want to avoid things like spoilers (though I know Smash hasn't always done well with that, re: Fiora), and that might make some descriptions tricky. What do you put for the Spirit of, say, Balder from Bayonetta? Do you say that he's her father, a spoiler for Bayo 1? Do you say that he's actually heroic and trying to help her, but eventually loses his way, a spoiler for Bayo 2? If not, what do you actually say about him? Because ignoring those two things leaves you with "he's the enigmatic bad guy from bayonetta 1 and totally isn't in bayonetta 2 just younger and wearing a mask ha ha ha" and that really complicates things.
I think it would've been rad to have full descriptions of every Spirit, and I'm sad that Spirits were ultimately rendered as boring as they were, but speaking from what little experience I have with games writing, I can easily imagine a group of 5 people having to spend several months of development time on just those descriptions *alone*, and with the way that the gaming industry treats its writers... yeah.
Oh also don't forget that every DLC fighter ALSO brought over many, many spirits, which would all need their own descriptions, and it's not like the original dev team could have hired people for their knowledge on the lore of intended DLC fighters, sooooo....

I believe it was because at some point the ESRB updated its policies to be more strict, to the point that if a game with a higher rating is mentioned in promotional material of a lower rated one, the latter's rating will be raised to match the former's. That's why we ended up with Mii Costume trailers saying something like "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate × Dante" instead of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate × Devil May Cry". So yeah, even mentioning a M-rated game in an ad can warrant you a M rating.
This was done after Joker's release so that's why his trailer still has the Persona 5 logo. And it doesn't affect content released before the update so that's probably also the reason why they didn't update Pyra's spirit from the base game (her outfit isn't as revealing as Mythra's, who did have to be censored from the start).
I believe this update could seriously affect the chance of characters like Snake returning or Doom Slayer becoming playable as Nintendo wouldn't have an easy way to promote their respective franchises without being forced to raise their family-friendly game's age rating to a point where almost no one will buy it.
PD: forgot to mention it can also be CERO's fault, since they are the Japanese equivalent of the ESRB known for being even more strict (Palutena was almost not going to make it to Sm4sh because her outfit was a bit too revealing).

    • @velvetbutterfly
      @velvetbutterfly ปีที่แล้ว

@@banbanthebandit4002 okay but look at the history.
When FE joined Smash, it was just Marth and Roy, neither was out of Japan yet, their Emblems were vastly different but they were noteworthy for being pure sword fighters, Link used other tools, and the title screens for both their games/boxes featured swords prominently. It made sense to go with a symbol that represented both especially with Roy being promotional.
Then when Brawl came, Ike replaced Roy and was the only one to be known by the west.
Lehran's Medallion could have been a fine insignia I think, but that would overshadow Marth who is the face of the franchise in Japan, so once again the sword makes sense.
I feel like it's worth noting now how iconic the FE3 design of the sword is and how the OVA played a part in that due to it being the sword design used despite Marth's actual outfits changing. (Also, the OVA aired in the west too, making the Falchion more known than the titular Fire Emblem at the time of Melee even if NoA didn't have immense say during this era)
It wouldn't be until 4 when people would have had a chance to see the Shield of Flames with 11 and 13.
11 being such a low selling game that the series was going to end if 13 didn't meet a certain quota.
And by this point, a lot of people got the idea of legacy in their heads. That things that have been there from the beginning simply could not and would not be changed or removed.
Ness was there since 64, they knew Ness would be in even though he never got revealed before launch.
So at this point, changing to Crest of Flames was something no one would want.
And lastly for Ultimate, DLC shouldn't be considered for a franchise logo.
Yes, 3H was one of the most requested games to have a character from. But if Byleth isn't in the base roster it makes zero sense for their logo to be used for everyone that was.
You also had Snake changing logos for legal reasons.
So options for FE Logo boil down to Falchion (3 characters and legacy icon that suited most of the games)
Lehran's Medallion (1 character that sold poorly)
Shield of Flames (4 characters, is suited to only those 4 but still acts as face of the franchise)
Mark of Grima (people suggested this due to Robin's reveal and focus, cool design, unique, doesn't really fit anyone but sold super well)
And something from Fates, be it Yato (just Falchion but new) or Azura's pendant. Either way only applies to one character and while I think it'd look like a nice design, wouldn't fit better than any of the above.
While I can respect each idea, and it'd be cool if each character/game had their own icon instead of the franchise as a whole, Falchion was just by far the most appropriate pick for each game

On the topic of Spirits in Smash Ultimate, they actually replace more than just Trophies, and fail at replicating the fun of each and every one of them. So, I am going to list the wrongdoings caused by the implementation of Spirits outside of what they have done to Trophies.
First off, obviously, we’ve got to talk about World of Light, which tried to replace Subspace Emissary from Brawl. WoL fails at this, spectacularly. Between the nonexistent story, the just short of nonexistent overworld puzzles, and the significant lack of levels in this mode, the only thing this “Story Mode” has, is repetitive gameplay that really isn’t fun on a first playthrough, let alone the subsequent ones me and my brothers play of Subspace Emissary from time to time.
Next up, does anyone remember Events? Well, I always enjoyed playing through the events in each smash game whenever I couldn’t think of anything else to do. Some of the events were allowed to get really creative, changing even the most fundamental rules of the game to fit certain scenarios, where the Spirit Battles usually just amount to a bunch of checkboxes that, more often than not, are frustrating to deal with.
And finally, custom equipment from Smash 4. This one is so easy to fix, just let us build Spirit Teams on the character select screen, when they’re enabled and, mainly for randomised Spirit Teams, let us see the Support Spirits used in any given player’s team setup. Being able to tie Spirit Teams to certain characters could be a fun way to recreate custom characters, without the need for Custom Specials as well, but I’ll admit that part is just wishful thinking. And no, I don’t mean Amiibo when I talk about tying Spirit Teams to characters, that already exists, and is one of the few uses for Spirits I think was actually handled decently well.
As you might be able to tell, I don’t like Spirits very much, I think they’re one of the worst things to happen to the entire Smash Bros. series. Not the worst, that title goes to Smash 4 Beyonetta, but they’re certainly up there.
If you actually read this far, thank you for listening to my opinion on something that really doesn’t matter in the slightest, and have a good rest of your day.

I respect those points, I'm not the biggest fan of WoL either, it's bland and far less self involved than Subspace was, there's literally only 5 cutscenes and they're all less than 2 minutes except for the true ending/credits. I loved Subspace because of the real platforming metroidvania levels in it while WoL has nothing other than random fights against characters that 70% of the time I have to look up who the hell they are, seriously, what the hell is a Quendan Cheerleaders.
And the extra game modes being missing really blows, it's a miracle we even got Home Run Contest back (took an extra like 3 years but we still got it). Smash Run used to be my favorite thing to play on the 3ds version and is my favorite extra mode to date, just fun as hell to blaze through enemies and amass buffs before a final contest, which could be anything from a generic fight to a tower climb to a race to a stamina battle (call me cringe but stamina is actually my favorite of the three styles between time, stock, and stamina).
One of the things I liked most was the custom moves, especially because of being able to take Ness and say "Damn, Lucas is kinda fun." since the 2nd version of all his specials are just Lucas' moves. They were fun to unlock and experiment with one like Ganon's Wizard's Dropkick or Mario's Bluster Cape. They made me enjoy characters I otherwise hated using like Peach and Diddy and made me enjoy characters like Little Mac and Samus a lot more than I already did. Would've loved to see them come back so characters like Simon and Doc aren't a dumpster fire.

We probably didn't get a Gangplank Galleon stage because we already kinda have 2 pirate ship stages, the one from Wind Waker, and the TTYD/PM64 section of the Paper Mario stage, and they probably felt DK was very fine with its Melee stages getting remade
As for the Alola Pokémon League stage, well... Alola's Pokémon League is just kinda ugly tbh xd, and it would've just been a repeat of either the two Pokemon Stadium stages or Kalos Pokémon League, and we already have Rock, Flying and Steel very covered in the aforementioned stages, with Fighting not offering much for an interesting stage different from the base form, and the Alolan Pokémon League also takes place in like an underground with crystals, which is something Spear Pillar already has too, so it hardly brings something new to the table tbh
And Ultimate was already late to the party with all the Alola stuff because by the time the game released, we were already in Gen 8, which kinda sucks because a stage where giant Pokémon engage in Godzilla fights as you fight sounds cool, though Incineroar was a very good choice, even if unintentional, because Incineroar was a very prominent Pokémon in Gen 7 and 8's competitive scene, so much he had Gamefreak create and modify abilities to directly counter Incineroar's Intimidate ability, and he also follows Greninja in being the best starter of its generation, which also had its ability nerfed in Gen 9 xd

I hate that 80% of everything revolving around Sora’s portrayal is around Kingdom Hearts 1. The ground normals, the aerials, the specials, the MUSIC (which is one of the worst offenders). The Moveset in general is also kinda “meh” because it’s mostly just Keyblade swings; and generic magic attacks. Funnily enough the spells that could’ve actually been interesting are just taunts. I just expected a character that comes from a series to have 200 games to have a lot more complexity.

For Maria Renard, Richter saved her incidentally during his Castlevania game, Rondo of Blood. Her stage is like based on the crumbling undercroft of the castle in which you find her. Her Cucco starting item is based on her default attack, where she sends bird forwards to peck. One thing I hate is the fact that despite Ultimate Coming out a few months after Warioware Gold, there's no representation of Lulu, not even a spirit of her, if I would imagine her as a spirit in Ultimate at its Launch, There'll be a Red Toon Link representing her Bow and Arrows and a Red Squirtle to represent her water gun, the Hydrocannon LX. Both npcs will most likely use their neutral specials and the stage would be Pokemon Stadium.
Also it's a huge shame that Penny Crygor doesn't become a spirit alongside her song getting added sometime after Get it Together's release to help support it, but it didn't happen.

If I recall correctly, part of the reason Wooly World never really came back was because it was actually a last minute stage. The Smash team didn't have a lot of reference material to work with in Smash 4 which is why it's pretty basic. At least that's why I think so. As for stages like Orbital Assault Gate and Jungle Hijinxs, those didn't come back because the former took a year to make and remaking that one to match the visuals of every other stage probably would've been taxing, and the latter not coming back could probably be because it would be harder to implement that stage with the Stage Morph mechanic with some players being in the background and others in the foreground. I don't think spirits replaced trophies for dev time. More so due to card ridge size. Like the space they have for vanilla ultimate is literaly the size they had from smash 4 musics alone.
Like. If spirits went the route of original sprites and artworks. Trophies could have been made for bigger characters. And then miniatures with the original model as sub trophies that would require much work. But that would be so heavy on the space required. That even just the amount of trophies from smash 4 would outweigh spirits after every addition. Probably time 2 or more tbh.

Back then we were still kids.. we were playing games inside a game! ... like later on in Melee, Pikachu with the green hat taking the role of some drunken father and stuff like that lol
And the way how Spirits tried to recreate different characters with "what you got" ticked all those boxes for me.
I can totally see how they are sort of a downgrade from the trophies, but we can finally do something with all the stuff we collect aside from look at it and read some stuff (which can easily looked up nawadays... not so much back then)
Also, having description for *that* many spirits also would have to get translated first which multiplies development cost by quite a bit with that many languages. It would've been so cool to have 3 more returning stages just so we can have a complete box of stages like if it took 1 year to make Orbital Gate Assault why not reuse it? If bringing back 3 more stages was too much why not put the 3 random stage selections in that spot so we can a complete box instead of having an empty space.

Alright, one thing, every one talks about the Crafted Yoshi alt being replaced with the Woolly World alt, I don't think that's really the problem. The problem is the way the Smash team rendered the felt design over Yoshi was poorly done, unlike in the game, and they used the basic green color, which makes it hard to tell from Yoshi's primary color. My solution is to either improve how the felt looks in Ultimate (get Good Feel to do it or smth), change Crafted Yoshi to orange or a color not represented yet, OR just give him one of the many costumes in the game. Crafted World is one of my favourite games and I'm gonna fight for it.

Yoshi has like zero interesting representation in this game, so completely replacing the alt from his _newest game_ , or worse, changing it for another Yoshi's Island reference with the black alt would be a really bad move for the fans of the franchise. Just make the CW alt look less ugly in Smash, it looks fantastic in Yoshi's origin game.
Alternatively, if they're gonna for sure swap out the alt in the next game, throw in Kamek or Poochy into the roster, or maybe Sunshine Station or Kamek's Castle as stages from CW for compensation.
