  • The HP Z840 is an enterprise level desktop workstation. Yes, it runs on server grade components but is inside a desktop form factor. In our video, we will provide an overview specifically focused on memory and CPUs. We will review how to install your RAM upgrades as well as how to properly configure memory inside your HP Z840 tower workstation. We will provide a few general tips and tricks to make your installation process as smooth as possible. Sit back, relax and enjoy the HP Z840 memory tutorial video.
    The HP Z840 workstation operates with dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3 or V4 series processors, which is an LGA2011-3 CPU socket. We recommend the E5-2620v3 or E5-26230v3 for lower end applications, E5-2660v3 or E5-2670v3 as value CPUs, and E5-2690v4 or E5-2695v4 or E5-2697v4 or E5-2699v4 for higher end applications. There are 16 DIMM slots inside running on DDR4 memory architecture. This is the next generation to the Z820 workstation. With the Z840, you can utilize 2133 MT/s, 24000 MT/s or 2666MT/s. Do note, 2666 will clock down to 2400MT/s, which is technically the fastest speed. Size options include 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. There are two types of memory you can utilize with your HP Z840 workstation: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM) server modules. We recommend RDIMMs for lower sizes such as 4GB 8GB or 16GB. However we recommend LRDIMMs for higher DIMM sizes such as 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. With LRDIMMs you can reach quadruple the overall memory capacity compared to RDIMMs. RDIMMs - The max memory configuration is 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Whereas LRDIMMs, the max configuration is 2TB via (16 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory.
    There are two Intel processors. Each CPU controls 8 DIMM slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per CPU. There are 2 DIMM slots per Memory Channel. The memory channels are extremely important. If you are not loading up all 16 DIMMs, then you want to make sure you split your modules evenly across the various memory channels. This is very easy to identify. HP has labeled and color coded to help you easily load your memory upgrades. You always want to start your install at the beginning of the memory channel. Black is the first DIMM slot in each memory channel followed by white second. The proper memory configuration would be in sets of 4 such as 4, 8, or 16 DIMMs to maintain an even load balance/distribution across the Z840 memory channels. In our video, we will discuss the channels in more depth and we will actually load and upgrade our Z840 desktop.
    The highly versatile HP Z840 and will work for a wide variety of applications such as a home desktop, gaming or office server. Do you want to buy a refurbished HP Z840? You can custom configure your own Z840 server on our website or contact sales@cloudninjas.com for quotes.

    BTW the Z-cooler that is optional for the Z840 and Z820 is ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING. The Z coolers keep the CPUs cool under any load. Its borderline paranormal. Highly recommended.

    • @RappinAcoustic

      @@cloudninjas Also, you can have a silent machine under full load with 40 cores/80 threats if using the Z cooler and a pair of E5-2698v4's. If you go any higher TDP on the CPUs though, the Z840 will not be silent under load even with the specialized coolers.

    Any thoughts on bad memory damaging a CPU?
    I have a z840 running dual E5-2680 V4s, that came with 64 GB of DDR4-2400T memory in 8 slots. I picked up another set of eight, 8GB memory DIMMs, same part number and manufacturer and it wouldn't boot after that. I removed the extra memory and it still wouldn't boot. I then pulled all the memory except slot 1 on both CPUs, still no boot or the 5 beep memory error.
    I finally pulled the second CPU (1), and started checking memory 1 DIMM at a time in CPU0 slot 1 and it would boot, tested all the DIMMs one at a time and found that four of the "new" DIMMs I purchased would cause the system to fail to boot with the 5 beeps. Could 4 bad DIMMs have damaged the second CPU? I ordered another 2680 V4 CPU off of ebay for $14, so I'm hoping the system isn't damaged at the motherboard level. I knew it was the second CPU that was the problem. I turned it on, left it on for a few minutes but shut it down when the fans ramped up to full speed. When I shut it down and pulled off the fans, I couldn't touch the second CPU's heatsink, the first one was just slightly warm as I would expect.
    I haven't found any information on the net though about bad memory damaging CPUs so I'm a little stumped as to why the system won't boot now, even with all the "new" memory removed and trying to boot with the previous configuration that worked. I even pulled the second CPU twice and reseated it to make sure it wasn't a CPU contact problem and it hasn't helped. It will boot without the second CPU installed and all 8 of the first CPU memory slots filled.

    Welp ik my dell optiplex upgrade and I so happen too have a spare intel xeon e5-2640 laying in my room in mint condition and a little thermal paste left over from my intel i5 to i7 upgrade for my Dell optilex 9010 and tbh a max capacity of 512 gb of ram for a windows pc is incredible and quite impressive better than most Mac pros I think 🤔
    Edit: ok the lrdimm 2 tb ram just takes the cake I'm out for words and when I start a new job ik what I'm going for lmao

    Can the bios allow for resizeable bar ?

    • @zilog1
      @zilog1 ปีที่แล้ว

      im sure it can since re-sizable bar enabled over 4gb of vram and the cards that came with this at time of launch had 16GB of vram and up. so i would assume that it had to support that by default or else the card when you bought it new would not work

    you know what info is surprisingly hard to find out without just buying the damn thing? what kind of power connectors it has for GPUs. I bought a GPU with an 8 pin power connector, but nothing on the net tells me what kind of power connector it has in the machine so i have no idea if i need adapter or not. wait a week for it to get here, install the card, realize i dont have the right power connector, wait a week AGAIN for the petty ass connector, wasting more time 🙄

      Totally agree. We should do more videos on GPUs as a whole. We just went through the same pain adding some high end GPUs to an HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9. And a power cable with wrong pin count put us 2 days behind. The little things.
