    Geoff, I wonder. You have a wide range of experience with an eclectic mix of hardware. I wonder, what would you build if the parameters weren’t hardware cost, but operating cost? How much functionality/performance can you get out of low wattage hardware? Are the best options the little NUC-likes or is there something else which could also do the job of a home server doing storage, transcoding and other functions which we wouldn’t think of?

    • @denvera1g1
      @denvera1g1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Does it have to run at factory speeds?
      You can get quite alot more performance-per-watt out of a 3950x/5950x and i assume threadripper by undervolting and underclocking to about 3.2Ghz, only using about 70w you get similar performance to a 3900x/5900x while those two processors are using ~150w(at sock clocks), yes, more performance, for 1/2 the power.

      Underlocking modern cpus reduces power dramatically, but it decreases performance a tiny bit. 15% less performance, but 50% less watts, it's insane.
      In the old days CPUs had smaller TDPs out of the box, but they could be overclocked a lot. Nowadays it's the opposite, overclocking is very limited, and the chips come with high power needs out ofthe box, however with a simple setting you can change all this, just don't but a cheapo motherboard as the bios options will be limited.

    I've been running a Z440 for my main 24/7 Proxmox "server" in my homelab for a while and it's been fantastic. My build is all-SSD to keep running costs down, and I've got 12 SSDs in it (4x1TB NVMe + 4x256GB NVMe in two ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 cards + 4x480GB) with 64GB of RAM, an E5-2660 v3, and a Mellanox ConnectX-3 10 gig SFP+ card. Idle power consumption (with a normal CPU load of about 10-15%) is about 60-65 watts, so it's decently power efficient. Might upgrade to a 2680 v4 CPU at some point though.

That was before the current gen GPUs were released. 2 of them were budget builds for brothers with E5-1650v3 6 core, 32GB RAM and an RX 580 8GB. Latest one is another budget one for a friend with an i7-6800K, 32GB RAM and going to stick a 1080ti, 2080 Super or 3060 in there I guess. Helpful Video, thanks! I have a couple of questions regarding the Z440. I'm about to decide whether to buy a used Z440 Workstation with the following specs: AMD FirePro W5100 4GB (2014), Intel Xeon E5-1630 v4 (2016), 32 GB DDR4 PC4 2400T RAM, and 256 GB SSD. Do you think Linux (Pop!_OS for example) can be installed without any problems right out of the box (USB live installer when booting) and run well with that AMD GPU? Also, is it a big hassle to just plug in an additional SATA SSD to keep Windows on the first one and install Linux only onto the second SSD (dual boot basically), or is there a catch to that? I'm glad you noted the downsides of open source software on Linux. I'm pretty tired of insufferable Linux nerds claiming there are no downsides. 10 years ago as a college student just trying to learn different creative programs, I was more than happy to use open source software, but now that I'm a professional and am more enfranchised, you can bet that I'm using Adobe products. I'll always respect open source software and freeware and won't tear down anyone for preferring to use them for various reasons, but it's not worth forcing on other people who are content with mainstream software. I may hate Adobe's subscription model but it's still 100% required and essential software for the work I do.
    Anyways, nice video overall, very interesting stuff :)

    I think it is wrong for somebody to come to Linux and try to mimic your workflow on another OS. It would be difficult since you have to use a lot of workarounds and never learn the real advantages of Linux. Of course, this costs time and is understandable if somebody can not afford to invest that time, but once you decide to learn to do the things the Linux way. Indeed with Linux, anybody could discover new and more efficient workflows.
    I say this for experience, I tried to use Linux as if I was using Windows, which was a terrible experience. Still, my workflow started to improve once I learned a bunch of useful CLI tools and plugins made for the community for open source programs.

The predecessor z420 supports 32gb dimms (both rdimm and lrdimm) even though the manual says it doesn’t…would like to know if the z440 is as friendly as the z420. Your 1600 series Xeon probably doesn’t support lrdimms though so if you want to do this test you’re going to need to locate a 2600 series v3/v4 Xeon.

      Prices are holding firm around what was quoted. I just picked one up for $125 locally, and all of the Xeon goodies are really cheap. Most of them are used, but still functional if you feel like experimenting with core numbers vs CPU output. Same with Nvidia GPUs. I'm planning on experimenting with a pair of bridged Quadro M4000's to see how they handle gaming. Other videos I've seen showed sorta ok results with a single card and a basic CPU, but nothing from a bridged combo with an updated CPU.
      I really don't plan on doing heavy gaming with mine, but it would be fun to jump on and drop a line about how I'm running this race in a semi truck

    So I've been planning on something like this for maybe longer than I've been watching your videos but found this right around the same time I was trying to figure out what kind of mostly-gaming-focused decommissioned workstation to buy (had some plans for also using it as a hackintosh, so looking into KVM virtualization -- I found your channel from looking into virtualization stuff for things like that and remote gaming). Alas, my setup won't be quite as fancy as yours, though, as my budget right now isn't for anything fancier than a 1650 yet, but might upgrade that in a couple years right now (something that my decades of work with laptops never allowed, and a positive change I'm looking forward to).
    Anyway this video's a bit old now but long term engagement metrics being what they are, maybe you can help me with a question. I noticed that with the 3660 you're using, you didn't plug in the supplemental power during the setup montage. I saw another video that had to use some adapters with the stock power supply to plug into the GPU, notably using an adapter from the SATA power ports (!!) claiming it was the only method that they could find that sufficiently powered the card. Did you use a custom power supply, adapters, or something else?

    • @THEmuteKi
      @THEmuteKi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it looks like the problem is that I have the 525w power supply. Well, it sounds like the 1650 may not require the extra power if it's not being overclocked, so it might run well enough for the stuff I want to use it with. If not then the power supply is the next upgrade on the docket.

    • @censored-admin
      @censored-admin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. I built a z640 with a second CPU riser add-in (set for ~$350) and also put in the official add-in pcie card that has a single nvme spot (I think its called the Z Turbo Drive; $40 on Amazon part # MS-4365 ; NVME storage separate - put in 1TB Hynix). One nice thing about HPE products is they have both a "Quickspecs" and "maintenance guide" PDFs you can download with a wealth of info. Guide says to be able to boot off the nvme, you need to have no other storage installed yet, install OS, then install other storage. Has worked great. Recently upgraded 2x 2.4GHz V3 CPUs to (2x 3.5GHz V4 for $90 total). With a V3 CPU the RAM is limited to 1866 whereas upon my upgrade the clock jumped to 2400 (since I initially put in 32GB 2400 RAM $130). Now just waiting to replace my old gtx 960... My dad got a Z440 and did similar to the OP video of just putting in a regular SSD and HDD for storage with a workstation GPU.
      Edit: My dads PC was quite a bit less. The 16xx V4 CPU are better if only using one socket which the z440 has. With my z640 and having additional CPU socket, you need to use 26xx CPUs. Z840 has 2x CPU sockets on mobo, no riser card needed.
