Just got a used Z840 myself, and totally love it so far! Upgraded from a used Z600 that I totally max'ed out with two of the best Xeons for it, 96GB RAM and a Quadro P5000... This time I have ordered two of the next best Xeons for the Z840, with 40 cores/80 threads in total and 256GB DDR4. Migrating over the P5000 to the new system. This will do just fine for my 4K film remastering. :)

@@ArtofServer Thanks! Cool. Yeah, I think so too. Very capable and highly upgradable as well. Just found out mine has an NVMe PCIe card with a 512GB M.2, and it was not even mentioned in the online sales ad for this used Z840. :D I wanted it to boot faster, so I have disabled the SAS controller entirely, using the other two SATA legacy options instead. Maybe I will re-enable it again sometime in the future if needed... But mostly use external drives for my storage.

HP zZ640 and Z840 support sata and ssata drive modes. Can one install sas drives with raidz1? I have sas drives connected to the drive cage but for some reason they aren't detected. I researched on the HP website about HP Z640 supporting sas drives seems one needs a LSI controller. I intend to run Proxmox as the hypervisor; then create VMs to run different distros and also host plex as a standalone platform through hdd passthrough, run pihole on a vm and also wire-guard on a vm as my bypass to my plex server when am not home. Please advise which is the best route to take. Thank you

There are many things about the chassis on the Z840 which have remained the same since the original Z800 models and I think it might be quite easy to swap out the front/top grill from the Z800 and fit it in the Z840. I have
    Dell R710 ( 1x E5504 @GHz, 36 GB Ram and 6 x 2TB drives, H700) this is a 6 bay unit
    Dell R720 (2x E5-2670 2.6GHz, 128GB Ram 4 x 2TB drives, H710) this is an 8 bay unit
My intention is to setup the R710 as a NAS unit and the R720 as a virtualisation server with 1 or more pass through GPU’s
My thought is to run either TrueNas scale or Unraid on the R710
As for the R720 not sure options are:
    TrueNas
    ProxMox
    TrueNas on ProxMox
    Proxmox on TrueNas
If I run TrueNas on the R710 then there are advantages in running it on the R720 as well. One disadvantage is not getting exposure to ProxMox.
One question is whether or not TrueNas Scale can do the virtualisation to the same or better level than ProxMox.
The use case is a Homelab. I’m retiring in a few months time and this is something to drive myself insane with.
I am leaning towards TrueNas Scale on both with ProxMox on TrueNas on the R720

@Art of Server I just realised the cages are direct attached. Sorry. I'm new to this Storage world. I understand now. I'll just plug it to sas-3 controllers. Just watched your vid on z840 sas-3 upgrade. Your channel really helped me out. Thanks a lot!

The Z840 uses a laptop "slim" SATA optical drive. You can see it in the video right above the 5.25" bays I'm using.

I think it should, but I can't get my hands on any RTX GPUs... :-( You will need to power connectors for it...

Labeling hard drives is the main reason I don't want to use ZFS. Totally disaster.

Hmmm.... I still find it useful to label hard drives even with other storage technologies, not just ZFS.
