      I've owned my MK8 R for 2 weeks now. I think everything is really over blown except the climate controls. The MK7 had a touch screen radio too. The capacitive buttons on the steering wheel are not overly sensitive so it's very easy to tell when you're pushing them. I've never hit something on accident. The climate not being always on the screen drives me nuts. Also I can't fathom how they justified not back-lighting the quick touch panel below the screen. My passenger literally can't change the volume at night.

    Can't get enough of R content lately. The soundaktor is much more prominent sounding in this generation. Upshifts seems more aggressive as well. Great overall video on the driving aspect in the new R. The pure white pops on the MK8 R but would look nicer in the Oryx White Pearl, imo.

    VW not illuminating the HVAC control bar for night driving seems like an odd oversight.

    • @MrZhilvinas
      @MrZhilvinas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree, although when driving the voice control actually works great for me so I rarely touch the controls. Simple commands like set X degrees and set auto ac aggressiveness to low/med/high work very well and cover 99% of cases. Seems the HVAC controls are an array of IR sensors to support sliding, which left no obvious room for backlighting.
      While gimmicky at first, the combo of hey vw for car things like hvac and hey siri/google for music/nav works surprisingly great once you get to used to it. After a few months I actually find myself annoyed with other cars when saying 'hey car, the rear window is fogging up' doesn't turn on the defroster temporarily.

    I've been waiting for this review from The Topher!! Absolutely love all your car reviews, so down to earth with realistic expectations and real World, everyday driving.
    After watching I'll be keeping my Focus RS. Direct Injection only with no mutli port fuel injection is a recipe for carbon build up on the intake valves. Just like my RS. It's been good so far but I don't put a ton of miles on it. A good walnut shell blasting will clean up the valves nicely though so it's manageable.
    Right now I've got my eye one a Mustang Mach 1... it uses a naturally aspirated V8 with dual port injection, has that wonderful Tremac manual transmission and is different enough in exterior design to separate itself from the regular Mustang GT. To me Ford has a winning and reliable package that will have parts available forever. AND it will be one of the last great V8's since they're all vanishing soon. Which really sucks... love my AWD hot hatch tho! So nimble and practical in all weather conditions.

    • @TheTopher
      @TheTopher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sweet! And thanks 🙌 I never had an issue with carbon build up in my MK6 but I drove it long distances and with higher revs once it warmed up. Short trips can be a different story.
      The Mach 1 is amazing, only drove it briefly on track but it’s nearly a perfect mustang formula. Until then keep enjoying your Focus RS!

    Hey Topher! Love your channel and have watched alot of your videos. I am currently doing some research on a couple potential vehicles to purchase. Looking at getting maybe this golf r with the dsg, the 2020+ Honda Civic Type R, or the Audi S3. Couple questions. I know the S3 and Golf R are very similar, S3 infotainment appears to be a lot easier to use, a little less HP and less cargo room. I noticed you didnt mention fuel economy numbers for the Golf R. Did you have that info for your time with the vehicle? Out of the 3 vehicles I mentioned, what would be your choice and why?
    Thanks so much for the great vids and I look forward (hopefully) to your response!

    Great review. I was thinking of upgrading my Golf Sportwagen to the new GTI (R is too pricey), but this review confirms that the user interface is a damnable flaw. Another reviewer noted that VW designers said that they modeled the Infotainment after the iPad... now whether that's true or not, I don't know. It trucks though, as it's got the mobile tablet feel to it. Insane. An iOS (or Andriod) tablet experience consumes a significant amount of attention -which is why it's frowned upon, and in many jurisdictions, illegal- to use such devices while driving. Fastening the damn thing to the dash doesn't make it less problematic. The joyful use of a modern tablet on a Saturday morn while slurping down syrupy flapjacks lounging on the sofa with intermittent flatulence -yeah, that works. But how could any rational designer think that such an experience is fitting to fasten to the dash of a 4000 lb machine making 315 horsepower? My first car was an '85 Prelude Si... seeing this from VW definitely spurs me on to rekindle my feelings for Honda.

    I have a 2016 Golf. My concerns about this model are the defects that I found in my golf as it got older. The moonroof leaks. This was a known factory defect that never really got fixed, so if I can't buy one without a moonroof I probably won't get one.
    The black trim between the windshield and the moonroof degraded in the sun over just a few years. I'm sure it would have lasted a lot longer if you park it inside but mine was outdoors in the South so it degraded quickly.
    3 of my wheel speed sensors went bad over the years and they had to be replaced.
    The transmission coolant line had to be replaced.
    I'm curious if they fixed any of those problems.
