We’ve got our hands on the new Honda Civic Type R, so of course, it’s time for an epic hot hatch drag race!
We’re putting the Type R up against its key competitors - the new Golf R 20 Year, the AMG A35, BMW M135i and Audi S3 to see which is quickest over the 1/4-mile. So let’s see how they compare.
Starting with the Golf R, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can deliver 333hp and 420Nm. It’s equipped with AWD and weighs in at 1,480kg. Next up it’s the S3, which has the same sized engine and can put down 310hp and 400Nm of torque. It’s also got AWD and tips the scales at 1,500kg.
The BMW also comes equipped with a 2-litre turbo 4-cylinder, which produces 306hp and 450Nm - the highest level of torque in this line-up. It’s heavier than both the Golf R and the S3, coming in at 1,525kg. However, it’s not the heaviest car here. That honour goes to the AMG A35, which weighs in at 1,555kg. It still packs a punch though, with its 2-litre turbo 4-cylinder engine being able to put down 306hp and 400Nm.
Then finally we have the Type R. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a (you guessed it…) 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, that can put down 329hp and 420Nm. It may be the lightest car here, at 1,429kg, however, it’s also the only manual! What’s more, it only drives the front wheels!
Surely the Type R can’t snatch the win?! There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

That A35 is 0.9 seconds quicker than the one in the A45S vs A35 video and a full second quicker than the one in the S3 vs M135i vs A35 video. As others have pointed out, there's almost no chance it is stock.
the A35 driver said it was "pretty stock" - translation: "tuned AF"
13,4 was veeery bad time for A35. You can find 12,9s did by A35 limousine compeletly stock in Santa Pod. Maybe previous car tested by Carwow hasnt been broken-in yet or wasnt in Sport+ mode and switched off traction control. You cant compare two cars. They had also several different factory softwares. The best update was in Nov 2022

I don't believe in any circumstance that a stock A35 would be able to beat that time, done on a prepped surface, by a full half second here on an unprepped surface.
However, that's just speculation. :)

to be honest 13.4 was done in damp/wet conditions , here is completely dry

@@alienzz51 You may be on to something. A35 hooks up really hard on launch, but the A45S has a better 4WD system still (can put more power to the rear). I could believe this sets them apart launching in the wet.
I've seen tuned a35's that were not able to do a quarter in 12.5 seconds that one has definitely had some work done.
The A35's drag time is also better than TVR TUSCAN SPEED 6.

Matt you should compare all these hot batches with real real stats with bhp and weight. I know that you did it for the previous video however it be great if you did it with these cars.
Some a35's came out of the factory with 330bhp , tuners for mercs like MSL performance have found as much when tuning them.

That A35 has been tuned not standard.
Yep. 460bhp when its fully tuned. It also has Weight Reduction Stage 2 applied.
Toyota GR Yaris' best time was 12.5sec as well when it won on your drag race against BMW e46 M3 and Mitsubishi Evo VI. 😛
Yeah! The GR Yaris is incredibly quick,.. similar or better performance and much lighter hence most probably more fun than these £41K+ cars here!

Please do a dyno drag race with that Mercedes A35. It should seriously not be that fast to the quarter mile.
A35 has much more power after break-in process. Mine has 336HP 100%stock
@@skylinedrag I drive the A35 myself and seriously it’s not quicker than an Golf R. It also shouldn’t be quicker than an Audi S3. I love my AMG, but it’s definitely not that that quick.
@@_carfreak_2812 You should go for software update in Mercedes service. My last update of gearbox and engine map in service area made car much faster in comfort mode and middle range has improved, but indeed Golf 8R seems to be even quicker above 150kmh
@@skylinedrag what’s your break in process? Is it simply not going above 4500 rpm for the first 5000km and not staying at the same rev for a prolonged period? Anything else?
@skylinedrag it's still not gonna do 12.5. I've tested mine many times. Stock, tune only, exhaust + tune. Even with perfect start, tyres and other conditions, you will not get a 12.5s quarter mile stock.

Because comfy cruising is from highest gear low rpm, changing to third.

The road handling has always been a disadvantage on Golfs, taking curves is not their strong point

I'm still happy with the BMW 140i Xdrive after turning off the stabilization and traction control in sport plus mode and ideally with DTE 400Ps and 600Nm ... .

My friend has stage 1 software and exhaust from MG motorsport. He did 12,32s. Car has 376hp. I need to measure mine stock car. It was dynoed and result was 336hp with milage 13000km

According to the dyno, the VAG vehicles scatter about 30-40hp upwards. Make Software at the #TypeR to 370hp then the whole thing looks different ;-)
No, not really. I´m a honda guy but for the money, the performance out of the box is underwhelming. Honda can´t keep up anymore. Same engine for 3 gens, but now, you can buy it in 70k+ integra 5dr chassis... :)

@@blue32s ya, only way to make a VR6 move is with boost. By today's standards even though the "power is similar" in terms of horses.. A GTI can wax either one bone stock.

tbf though to the civic, its was gona be hard to get leading edge regardless especially when gear changes are auto/computer on all the other cars versus the Civis manual gearbox.

That A35 is definitely tuned. The owner may genuinely think it’s standard but bought it previously tuned. I have part ex many cars in the past, that had been tuned and I’ve not told the dealers, so the next owner wouldn’t have any idea they are driving around in a tuned car.
The fully tuned A35 has 464bhp imo.

The owner of the A35 said "pretty stock" not fully or absolutely stock so could hint towards some sort of remap because there is no way that is stock. Also digging the look of the new Golf R. A £47k civic?? They can keep it.

The R has the exact same interior as the GTI with a few differently colored pieces of trim and more supportive seats. If it had a good interior, car journalists wouldn't have completely smashed it in their reviews.
Your 'for its class' argument is also amusing, as in this very video you can see an M135i with an infinitely better interior and which is also 8k cheaper. Yeah, it's slower but nowhere near as slow as the price difference would suggest.
Furthermore, for a few grand more you can get an M240i which is better than this Golf in every possible category bar none.
Take my advice and watch a few reviews before saying such nonsense. Or maybe you did, but you're having a hard time accepting the fact that the 8R's interior is just bad.

A35 with stage 1 tune is around 350hp / 480nm witch looks very much like this one.
The A35 could maybe have some sort of afterburner like Clarkson´s Starion had. But it should undress itself, though
This are all great fast cars but I can’t forget about the good old times (15 years ago) when we had hot hatches with really great engines like Alfa 147 GTA, VW R32, BMW 130i… just listening te new cars reving is depressing considering the money they cost

Would that really help in a one time break test though? Modern car brakes are normally good enough to easily lock up. The only reason you would want to use engine braking or upgrade your brakes would be if you were afraid they would overheat. But, I’m not a big car guy so idk
The limiting factor in a brake test is grip so that's gonna make fuck all difference

Does an Audi not disable the soft limiter when turning off traction control and putting the car in neutral? I can do that in my seat ibiza, I'd imagine it also works in other VAG cars

The price you pay in UK for the Type R is crazy. They are 51K $Canadian out here. (When you could get one but it was possible to buy at MSRP if you were in the line up.)
Rolling races should be done over a full mile not half mile, and that 10mph accelaration race is nice too, keep doing those

Honda Civic Type-R has been totally disadvantaged with awd Germany cars because its the only one with manual transmission and a fwd. I ganuantee this, if that Honda has a awd, with a MT, the guys in Germany cars will be singing a different tune. So, Excellent job for Hondas for keeping the manual transmission alive.
Mat please do FWD hothatches like new Hyundai i30N, Focus ST, Megane RS. There are a lot of facelifts with around 300 HP!
