also as a person who's owned a MK7 and MK7.5 GTI, i've learned always skip the first model year. engine issues, and VW likes to throw in upgrades in between random MYs

Thanks for addressing the infotainment issue properly by actually living with it and not immediately writing it off. I don't agree with what VW is doing, but so many journalists have tried to write off this car just based on first impressions with the infotainment instead of giving the car a well-deserved shot.
But aren't they correct about the infotainment?
@@junhaoliang4228 They're not wrong. I think the infotainment is awful. But even though many journalists recognize that the infotainment is not a deal-breaker for everybody, they write off the car as if it were. So they don't actually see how capable and solid the rest of the car is. The truth is is that there's very few cars left out there that are as well-rounded in performance, dynamics, practicality, and refinement for this kind of price. And for that, I think it's worth a look at despire the infotainment.
The so called infotainment problems are a huge nothingburger. None of the journalists even knew about the drop-down shortcut menu where you can put whatever function you want, completely eliminating the complaint that everything in the infotainment system is buried under a load of menus. Same with the so called bad steering wheel buttons you're supposedly constantly touching accidentally, never done it once lol. I'd have to break my wrist to accidentally hit the heated steering wheel button. What else? Oh yes the so called cheap interior. It's true that the back door panels are slightly cheaper looking, everything else when it comes to the interior, including and especially the entire drivers console, is a hard upgrade compared to any Golf 7. But sure, write off the car and call it cheap because in the back they used slightly cheaper panels... If you're interested in this car, go take a look at one yourself, and be dumbfounded about how much nonsense gets uploaded (and commented on), on YT.
I have had the car for 2 weeks. The info is soooo overblown. Not a single complaint. Takes 5 minutes to use. Set up and figure it all out. Created quick access page for everything I need. Steering wheel controls all Volume. Changing stations. I’m 50 also so please stop knocking this if u never used. Totally overblown. I have had many cars over time and this is hands down my favorite. Feel 18 every time I sit in that seat. Amazing car.

I really hope the Mk.8 matures in usability, whether it be small incremental adjustments or just a refresh in a couple years. It's rare you get such an example of a failing grade coming out of a bunch of As and Fs instead of middling scores.
I want to buy one so bad. But, the problems owners report is keeping me away. Which sucks, because in terms of usability, (ie. hatch space) performance, and a look that's more refined, there's no other option in the states.

@@DippleTriple I'd take a 7.5 GTI over a 8 any day of the week, but there's definitely an argument to be had for the Magna system in Mk8R over the 7's haldex.

A big part of me was curious to know how well that specc'd out Prius did. Quite an interesting looking vehicle. They have something like a 7hp motor for the rear wheels so I can't imagine too much fun having on the ice? Maybe? No clue. Wonder if the guy has any footage hanging around.
Whenever someone does that laugh when test driving a car you know they are having fun. Always in a golf R. Great review.

I can’t deal with the infotainment and capacitive buttons, I don’t think a single review has ignored this. VW will most likely change it for next year, so I’ll wait.
If the infotainment was fixed and the buttons became... actual buttons, this would instantly become one of the best cars on the market.

There's a "Direct Tune" button in the upper right hand corner of the sirius radio. Drives me nuts there's no channel list or tune up/down...but if you know the channel number you can direct tune. You can also set all of the stations you like to presets and scroll through them with the track buttons on the steering wheel.
i kinda wish we still had just a hot/cold knob and fan speed knob. this automatic climate stuff is just overcomplicated. i always just set it to high and then when I'm warm I just turn it off, no need for anything more

I have to imagine the difference between winter and studded tires is like street tires vs slicks, or even more.
So how much control do you have when it's on traction control? do you feel you have more grip or did you have the traction control off the whole time?
As a Golf and GTI owner for years it's mind blowing the holy grail Golf R can't adjust the cabin temperature because no lighting and the UI is so frustrating people give up turning on the radio.
VAG has always had a unique ownership and organizational structure but heiliger rauch get your $&!# together, Volkswagen.
Looks fun but the infotainment is such a deal breaker that I'll probably hold onto my MK7.5 Sportwagen 4Motion for a while and keep slowly turning it into a Golf R. Hopefully VW gets the message and "fixes" this car, it never should have come like this in the first place.

@@nomansland120 Everything? Heater controls you can't see, with half of it being on a touch screen... Any use of a touch screen for anything to do with driving should be illegal.
@@Malc180s Heater controls? How often do you set the temperature?? I set it to 21,5 degrees celcius the first time I buy the car. Don't ever touch it again. If my feet are cold I use the voice command "my feet are cold" and it will blow hot air on my feet for a couple of minutes. Same if they are warm and I want to cool them. Buttons on the steering wheel handle everything else I could possibly want to do while driving. Changing volume/skipping track even honking at clowns like you

this golf r is beautiful inside at night and the gluster is way better the mk7 and with a tune this gnna rip and the awd system is so much better then before

Agreed. I was surprised how well they performed against other cars running blizzaks. Maybe I got lucky getting an earlier run, but I’ll take the class win on the Pirellis.

I’ve got an MK8R on order. Does the car come with the adaptive front lights that swivel when you turn the wheel? My MK7.5 has that feature. Not a deal breaker of course but it’s a nice feature to have. Especially when paired with the cornering lights.

Great video. The car will initially respond better if you say "Hello Volkswagen". To tune to Sirius BPM, simply say, "Tune to Sirius XM BPM", instead of the channel number. That way you don't even have to memorize channel numbers which can change. Easy breezy!

It’s just the enhanced engine sound in race mode, not a big fan of it honestly. Especially after hearing the new S3 last week which sounds phenomenal!

It's amazing how many people wrote off this car because of the interior, including jounalists when it came out. I did too. Then I saw one in person. Then I BOUGHT one. Then I realized people were just being cranky 😂. Sure, in many ways the interior is a downgrade compared to MK7, especially at first, but honestly it works fine. At least in my 23. And as you suggested, it looks beautiful -- just my opinion. You learn to live with it, and appreciate it.
Besides, this car and the GTI are still Golfs. They drive beautifully and are insanely tunable. You get over the small stuff quickly lol

Shame your winter tires were really really bad. If that thing had some Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10's, you would've had so much more fun due to being able to actually gain speed, have some lateral grip and stopping power and the ability to have the car rotate much much easier.

I don’t think it gets fog lights. I think it’s a thing they’ve always done as my mk5 r32 doesn’t have them. It’s sporty so it doesn’t get em.

It’s an open front diff but has electronic brake torque vectoring.

@youtuber-cc8sx It's a licorice candy you can buy from most places- think thin long red bendy sticks. Any twizzler fan like myself would tell you it feels like slightly strawberry flavored plastic you can chew and eat, but I think it's mostly popular for the texture and snackability than it's taste.

wish car maker`s go bk to physical buttons on certain things again and not make them digital or touch buttons, climate and maybe radio the main things they should put physical ones on. not to mention bringing bk cd player bk or have an option to have one.
Looks like the Golf R could be a great all-season car! I’d prefer the new Civic Type R when it comes out. But, this seems more practical and I won’t have to switch the tires for the winter.
Type R is also awesome, but if you want an Auto or AWD, Golf R is the way to go! (also if speed is a big factor, the R absolutely blows the doors off the 10th gen type R in a drag race)

It is but not as good as the 7 and 7.5, hearing and reading about the test drives I wanted to go neutral and test drive one myself to make my own advice and owning the 7.5, I prefer the 7.5, the 8 is cool with the torque vectoring diff in the rear and the drift mode but it "doesn't get on it's toes" above 8/10th like the 7 does, it's back to the 6 R type of handling (maybe because of the tires that where on it but still)
when the infotainment and climate controls are that bad its going to keep people from buying it. No one will deal with that in a daily if there are other options. This isn't a Ferrari. Its all for cost cutting. That combined with the cheap materials inside .... its keeping die hard VW fanboys in their mk7/7.5 with no desire to trade in.
So tired of this regurgitated BS that lack of physical buttons is such a deal breaker. It's not, as reiterated by countless people who actually own the car.

And what makes you think that isn’t something big enough to be a deal breaker? You literally interact with the buttons every day. All cars are cheaper in US.
I can't remember the details since it's been a while since I looked at the differences, but there were a number of things that only the Euro model has.

@@hardwarerathighlights4432 There are various factors involved. One of them is taxes. One other is the fact that US has a lot of Japanese car factories(aka cheap Japanese cars) and therefore the Europeans are forced to sell their cars for less profit in US.

For the radio . Just use your voice . It's simple. And works. Anywho I use it all the time with Google maps and pandora. Just hit mic button. And say play whatever u like and it will . Or for nav. Ex. Say go home or work . . First Setup on phone . With a word shortcut. Say that word . And it will set nav . Simple . Also use voice for air/ heat / whatever . So don't need button. So mk8 is even more a drivers car . Because it's so easy to do anything
I probably tried 50 times to get a radio channel with voice control throughout the week. It worked 0% of the time. Not once did it give me the right channel. It’s ok though, I just sang to myself

I think this car was a slight miss. The infotainment is 100% worse then before. I also think the exterior looks not as good as the Mk7 and 7.5. Its subjective and I get that, but for me the sides of the car look great. The front end and rear end look worse.
That’s really interesting to see. I owned a ‘17 Audi S3, this cars predecessor and it was garbage in the snow. It wouldn’t get sideways at all. That cars handling was the main reason I sold it and bought a completely different car, a ‘19 ZL1. Granted, I don’t drive the camaro in the snow.
