    Excellent introduction to the Raven, full of useful tips, delivered so articulately without fuss, without any rambling! That's the way to do it, yet its so rare on TH-cam. Thank you for all that focused, useful information.

    Great great video, its so so so nice to hear someone who has actually used the camera professionally, and not just bought because its a RED and its the new thing to do. There is so many people on youtube who just judge the camera with out using it or with out really explaining anything. informative, good pace, interesting and not too much too quick, not boring at all. perfect video. please keep doin your thang !!

    Hey Kelly, great video, really informative.
    I have to admit that the series you made about the “Zacuto EVF & SmallHD DP4-EVF” made me choose a couple of years ago for the Zacuto EVF and I was really happy with that. The only reason that I didn't subscribe to your channel at that point was because that serie was the only thing that I was interested in on your channel. I now subscribed and watch part 1 and part 2 of the Red Raven as well as the Lens Comparison video. I have to say that I also subscribed cause I hope you find the time to make more informative series, and those don't have to be about filmmaking products/reviews alone. I would be interested in stuff/problems that you come along on set in different situations and that you have to conquer.
    Anyway , keep up the good work :)

    I'm not gonna lie and please don't take offense to this at all. I tried to watch these videos before I bought the Raven and I couldn't get passed your monotone voice. Now after buying it I had to watch it cause I wanted the information and I have to leave a comment to say how well done this was as far as explaining everything in depth to the best of your knowledge. I really learned a lot and look forward to more videos. You have a new Sub, also take this with a grain of salt: I work with a lot of entrepreneurs and business professionals training them to present better on camera or in person. You're very well articulated and you don't use Um, And, So etc as your pauses which is a fucking delight but the only tip I could offer would be, act like you're talking to a group of 4-year-olds. Enthusiasm is one of the easiest ways to grab someone's attention up front in the first 4 seconds. You have amazingly produced content that is very very informational and very helpful for a lot of people so I just thought "even though no one asked and maybe you couldn't possibly care less" that I might offer what I know works and let you run with it from there. I am Super Stoked I decided to watch this cause I feel more knowledgeable about my camera. Thanks for the time and effort you put into making these videos for all of us. I appreciate you.

    This is the second time I´ve commented on one of your videos, the first was in your review of the SLR magic Anamorphic series. As others have said, your information is really helpful without a bunch of backward hat ¨wassup guys, it´s your boy chad¨type nonsense that gets between the details and us. I´m considering going for the 5K gemini, but I´m thinking I´d rather use the extra cash to get some impeccable glass. Presently using a Blackmagic Cinema 4K, but looking at Netflix new spec requirements I need to upgrade, plus as you said, that slow motion at full res is really attractive! In a weird way, it feels like I´m a few steps behind in my professional development, so it´s really handy to have your insights in an accessible manner. Thank you!

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have enough experience using the A7s to say, but I can speak to mirrorless/small cameras in general. The RED RAVEN is in a totally other league, it's a system, it's easy to build up and strip down to a small package. The looks from the sensor is inherently filmic, unlike the A7s, it looks good right from the start. It's really about the types of things you shoot.

    Great great review! I'm a little worried about lens use on the wide end, I'm sure the 18-35mm is a great companion with the Raven but is it wide enough? On the Red tools page the SIGMA correspons to a super 35mm lens, Is it a 3 perf or a 4 perf ?

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comments. RED Raven at full 4.5K is similar to Super35 3-perf. As for a wide angle lens, I shoot with the Tokina 11-16 for a wide, which is plenty wide, however I don't find the lens to be very sharp. I'm waiting to try the Sigma 14mm or a Zeiss 12mm or something sharp and wide.

    • @decoyimages
      @decoyimages 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for your reply! Form what I'm seeing on the Red crop factor simulator, the 15mm full frame lens is pretty close to the 18-35mm Sigma on the wide end. I was thinking the new Sigma 14mm too. As far I can see it wont be a huge difference. Anyhow the 14mm looks promising, my only concern is filtration....

    Hello! Do you have a rec709 setting or something turned on for monitoring? After looking all though my menu and the internet I found out there is no LUT monitoring compatibility for the Raven, and trying to monitor RAW footage is not very practical.

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, yes, you want to have the REC 709 output set to on so that it shows you what it looks like instead of RAW, it's still RAW recording unless it's ProRes, it's just that it's easier to view.

  • @hankshaw5466
    @hankshaw5466 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent Preso! Question? I'm setting up my Videography business to launch by the end of the year. My niche has been aerial Videos utilizing three different drones. I have done some real-estate work using my drones and a Cannon 70D. I still consider myself a novice shooting with DSLRs but I am learning quickly. Would it be a mistake to jump to a Red Raven now as I'm learning? I really want to invest in the best equipment I can afford and the Red seems like it would give me several years without the need to upgrade in a year or two. Your candid feedback would very much appreciated.

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, this is a difficult question to answer. The first thing to consider is whether you can afford it or can make the money back quickly after buying it. Most clients won't care what camera you film with, but they know quality and they will notice the camera when it shows up on set. There are a lot of high end commercial clients who want the quality the RED has to offer. When you buy a RED camera you are buying into a system: batteries, accessories etc, so it's a big investment besides the camera (a lot of the accessories like v mount batteries can be used on other cameras). So it's about budget, shooting style, requirements etc. Do you do two camera shoots (where a budget might be better spent on two smaller cameras), do you like the idea of shooting RAW? Can your computer handle 4K editing? I bought the camera because I want to make movies with it, which I have, but I've also been specifically hired on jobs because I have a RED. So there are many variables. If budget is a restriction, a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K camera might do the trick. Good luck!

      I've been shooting video since I was a teenager: I learned to shoot and edit at the same time, I'm essentially self taught. I've used many camera systems over the years, been filming long before the DSLR revolution. I've read lots of books on the topic. I received a minor in Film Studies while at University, so I've studied film theory; I think about what's in the frame. I've done technical training at RED Studios and other filmmaking training events in the USA with many popular people you'd know. I shoot and edit video for a living. I take photographs and I'm constantly learning.

    no focus assist on the raven??

      Yes, there is focus assist. Make sure you have the latest upgrade. There's edge focusing and peaking and a third focus option, it makes it slightly sharper and that's the one I use, it's amazing. I use it on all RED cameras instead of peaking.

    when you finally made the review the camera is already discontinued

      RED didn't discontinue the RED RAVEN. They've put a hold on anyone ordering one until they are caught up in September. The camera was so popular they couldn't make enough. Shops like Drone Nerds are still getting them in.

      yeah thanks... btw u didn't talk about the crop factor... I heard it has 2.8x crop!!! really? can't I get the full frame?

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The crop factor at 4.5K full frame is 1.62. It's just shy of Super 35. Super 35 is the standard sensor size of film/cinema cameras. The DSLR introduced the Full Frame video sensor, but every film you see in a theatre was shot with a Super35 sensor, so crop factor is a photo thing.

    you didn't talk about the battery life

    • @NiceladyproductionsCanada
      @NiceladyproductionsCanada  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Battery life on the RED RAVEN is dependent on the batteries you choose. A 98 kwh battery lasts about 1hr half. There's also a setting you can select that allows you to turn off the monitor when after 10 seconds or whatever, to maintain battery life. I suggest buyig batteries that are higher capacity than the 98 kwh if you don't have to fly.
