    Who in the world told me having a mustache on a TH-cam video was a good idea? Just a small update still own a RED and love it. Have shot with all their 'brains' now and will make a new video soon-ish!

      Hey I’ve been thinking about jumping to a red Gemini. I have a Varicam LT which is about equally as expensive as some Reds. But guess what nobody knows that camera and the Gemini has almost the same dynamic range. Maybe a little better color depth and dual iso is a little better on Varicam but close enough on red. Have you used a Gemini? I think the 5k and increased colors the smaller camera form factor plus the name wouldn’t be a bad move. I’ve seen them selling for decent prices online.

    • @justinburgan
      @justinburgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexDerrick_DP I've seen a little bit from the Varicam LT but have never used one myself. They seem to be like great cameras. A few things to note: it has 14 stops where as the gemini has 16.5+, althought a small number, its a pretty big difference which will most likely be noticed in your highlight's & shadows. RED will offer you higher offspeed fps recording. RED has a RAW codec, which is insanely fast and flexible in post. All this being said, it all comes down to what work you are doing, what your clients needs are, and what future work you want to book. In my market, no one is really using the Varicam and idk what kind of full day rate you could get with a DP / rental package with owning that camera. If you aren't worried about that then go for it! Also check out the Black Magic Ursa 4.6k Pro G2! Hope this helps.

    Great video!
    Full disclosure, I worked for RED for a little bit. That being said, here’s my comment:
    The handle is absolutely an issue that it’s too long but it fits perfectly with the production module that is longer than the other modules and allows for battery swaps without having to detach it.
    I personally love the small handle that they sell that locks your grip in with the battery.
    But yeah... 3rd party is definitely a good way to go, especially on your wallet.
    I love the idea that you rent your self out as a red tech. Brilliant!
    Having worked in that field, many old school cinematographers don’t want to use the red because they don’t know how. You bridge that gap!
    To your point about reputation and such, absolutely! Not only are you a pro for showing up with pro equipment, but especially (what I have found) is that cinema sensors (due to less compression) give you so much more image quality, especially in action and movement heavy shots over dslr’s that are almost useless without stabilization.
    I also find it easier on my editing rig to work with 8k red footage than footage from a gh5 because of its insane compression and toll on the cpu.
    Again, great video :)

    Its called a RED digital cinema camera. This means the main purpose of the camera is to be a cinema camera. Anything else is secondary. As you mention, if a film set, it work fine. I personally don' t like the fan noise from it, beside that, No complain

    • @justinburgan

      I agree it's a cinema camera which I mentioned in the video. The fan noise doesn't bother me too much.. it doesn't ruin my audio however, I don't love how exposed it is.. still makes me nervous.

    How does the comparison of Red Scarlet-W sensor and APS-C DSLR sensor look in terms of the amount of light that falls on the sensor ?

    • @justinburgan
      @justinburgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I fully understand your question. In terms of Dynamic Range.. Red is by far superior than any DSLR / APS-C I've ever used. I came from a Black Magic Ursa Mini 4k.. I can tell the shadow and highlight roll off is SOOO much better. Especially highlights. It's nice having details in your highlights instead of just being blown out. If you are asking about the crop factor on the Red on the different filming resolutions.. I can't speak a whole lot to your light question. I've made a mistake at shooting at 2k with either a 16:1 or 18:1 compression and my footage was hardly usable. (it was only usable because I needed it and couldnt re shoot) I mostly stick to 4k or 5k 8:1 or 12:1. I only use the 2k mode if I need a frame rate higher than 120 such as 240 or 300! Hope this helps :)

    • @justinburgan

      Def go Gemini if you can! It's probably the most versatile and run n gun friendly. Most markets aren't to 8k yet. If you know you need 8k then you probably wouldnt have asked, ya know? You can use RED as a branding tool for the future and if a client needs 8k, then rent/charge accordingly. Most people still aren't delivering in 4k these days so I think you'll be good. The lowlight performance on the gemini, from what I've heard/seen is amazing (for red especially).

    I'm charging under 5k for the final VIDEO. which takes about a MONTH. Maybe I should move..

    • @justinburgan
      @justinburgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What kind of films are you making? It depends. Are you happy with where you are at in life.. personally and professionally. If not, how do you change that. 5k a video is pretty good. But let's break it down. 5x12 is 60. So lets assume you make 60k (gross) before paying assets, cameras, etc. Your net is probably going to be lower. I'd say a good goal is to try and net what you gross now. That's a good goal to have.
      ANOTHER EXAMPLE:
      40hrs a week (standard work week) times 4 weeks (4 weeks) in a month which equals 160hrs. 5,000 divided by 160 equals 31.25. Roughly, you are making $31 dollars an hour which is better than the average US citizen at about $26/hr. BUT you have to pay for ALL of your business costs. If you want to scare the hell out of yourself.. find out how much you pay monthly in taxes, gear, business expenses.. subtract that from your 5k and then divided by 160.... that's a scary number.

    • @ibrahimal-khalaf8008
      @ibrahimal-khalaf8008 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinburgan haha! that IS a scary number. Thanks for taking the time to write back, I appreciate it! -- I make ads for small businesses. But I give them the strategy for the ad. I do everything, from writing, to location scouting, to filming, to editing, to picking the talent. That's why it takes a month (which I think is a little. I'd like to work on one video a year!!). Most of the month comprises of consultations, strategy development, writing, location scouting and test shooting, and then filming with is about 4-6 hrs a day for 3 days. I go for the organic look and opt out of getting acting cause it kills the ad in my opinion. Now I don't know if that's worth more or less in terms of pricing, but I definitely don't see too many people in my city doing it. What do you think? should I charge more or leave to somewhere more prosperous? (again I appreciate your time! :) )

    • @justinburgan
      @justinburgan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ibrahimal-khalaf8008 Good on you bro! That sounds awesome, keep it up! We can always charge more. I'd try to increase your overall price every year. The thing that's helped my business drastically is breaking down all of my time and understanding how much I want to make hourly. So, I'd pick the least favorite thing you have to do.. meetings or writing or whatever you deem least favorite and say.. I want to make X amount of dollars hourly for that. Then calculate how many hours you are spending on all of these things. This will help give you a confident overall price. As far as talent goes.. Talent could help your ads.. I am not sure. That's up to you to make that decision.. but charge the client more for having in actors.. same as you would charge more for a camera, same is true for hiring talent, props, etc.
      Any time bro! Please feel free to ask more questions, I am hoping to launch a Patreon later this year to have more tips like this :) Please feel free to ask more questions, I might have to make specific examples over there!

      @justinburgan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't speak from experience as that camera is new and I havent used much of Canon's C line. Here's what I can tell you..
      RED's Raw codec is hard to beat. It cuts like butter in post.
      High speed frame rates are hard to beat.. I mean 4k 120.. come on.
      Lastly, it's industry standard. All the RED lines are easy to match and work with. So as a freelancer, it opens up the possibilities of being hired.
      Where I see the C500ii being good is for Auto Foucs.. but I'm using Cine lenses and Im old school and pull my own focus.
      Canon colors have stood the test of time but I a not super impressed with their cine colors. I'd prefer, RED, Arri, or even BlackMagic in the Cinema space.
