Thank you so much for putting this video up Tinman, I'm working on an 044 for a customer right now, it's a early model as well, and this is the most simple and easy video to understand and you go to show us that we don't need to go buy fancy tools but just use regular stuff we have laying around in the garages, thank you Tinman this video is going to make the seal job a lot easier!
Dude! This video like many others of yours could not have come at a better time! I have been rebuilding my first saw (200t) over the past few evenings to use in my small tree company in London Uk The videos and knowledge you have shared has become invaluable! So thank you mate! 🤙
Exactly how I feel, I had absolutely no experience with any sort of mechanics but couldn't afford working saws so bought non runners, everything I had to fix something I looked for a tinman video on it, was never disappointed. I've learnt so much and now have a dozen or more running saws all bought as non runners! Thanks a lot tinman!
Tinman just want to tip my hat to you for solving my mystery piston scoring and cylinder scratches from dog gone paint chips this never crossed my mind I been tinkering with 2 stroke engines since 78 or 79 I thought I had lost it for real I was stumped for sure Thanks Friend
This is what i have been looking for. Have 2 Stihl 044. 0ne 10mm pin and a 12mm. The 10mm started leaning out bad on me and its an old saw thats never been touched. Been thinking of crank seals and looking for vids. This is perfect. Thanks Tinman. As usual you do a great job.
Just the video I needed! I have an earlier 10mm 044 and it is having run ability issues. It'll run great until it gets good and warm and then it wont idle, acts like it is running out of gas. It was running great until I busted the rear tank/handle and had to replace it, used an OEM Stihl tank. Ran like a tank or two of gas through it with the new set up and then the problems started. Realistically I probably messed up the intake or impulse line, but I am glad to see the seals are not that big of a deal if I need to go there.
Not gonna lie I wrecked 2 seals on the clutch side trying to figure out how it worked with the bushing. Still not sure how that bushing seals so well but it does. Finally got to run my 044 for the first time this weekend after figuring all my issues out. It’s stupid fast but almost wish I ran it stock before porting to see what if anything I accomplished
Nice to see work on other saws. I completed my 272xp build today, motoseal is setting up over night, then first fire tomorrow. Not going to be able to sleep tonight. 😂😂 Thanks for all you content, TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙
Hi Tinman, I agree that the Stihl 044/440 runs very well stock for a work or firewood saw. I built a pipe for mine and I'm very happy with how it performs.
Stihl is like a Ford, they're great until they need worked on. Lots of gizmos and special brand specific tools and fasteners. I've ran every Stihl concrete saw ever made and they are pretty rugged and easy to start.
Thanks for sharing your tips and walking us through it. What were the symptoms of the saw running bad before you did the seals and did the seals fix it?
Been working on saws for couple years to make extra money got a 028 that's giving me fits good spark compression but saw is hard to start but but no Rev or new carb
Definitely different animals to work on. Not bad, just different. Tho I like all saws and brands, I've also been hands on with more huskys. Just started getting familiar with echoes 2 years ago and lately have been enjoying getting more into stihls! Just don't see as many in my area. Great tutorial and tips!
Arctic Stihl's were available for a long time in the US but they weren't popular enough nationwide so Stihl USA stopped American distribution maybe 10 years ago or so. Also full wrap heated handles exist but they're rare as hens teeth and often prices accordingly
@@schlomoshekelstein908 yeah the old partner group style of heated handles were pretty cool, I've thought about trying to do something like that myself. But I'm curious how exactly the generator systems rob power?
@@tinmanssaws I'm still always on the lookout for those rare ones here stateside, and I'd definitely take the few extra ounces to keep my fingers working a little longer lol.
Man, I'll take a cover over the brake hardware over an outboard clutch any day of the week. All my huskies (and stihl 200s) have outboard clutches and i find them quite annoying. Still great saws, but I know which ones I'll pick up first.
So I did the screw method and may have went slightly too far and hit the plastics ball bearing retainer, does that mean split the case and replace crank bearings?
I think poulan are the easiest to work on and have the cheapest parts but hasq and echo are easier than stihl Small town stihl dealers don’t like to order or sale parts, some only want to keep their shop busy 😊
Only a wild guess wiiiiild guess. But your saws running rich because your fuel tank vents missing its top and its pulling vapor from there jnto carburetor
Thats not a Denso spark plug i hope! The coloring looked like it might be! A lifetime of experience has taught me never ever buy denso plugs they usually dont last a day. I quit buying from one place altogether when they tried to sell me some! I said i thought this place was reputable but i guess not. On the brite side i have purchased a lot of good equipment abd simply installed a quality plug!
I will say as a 2 stroke tech. I hate Husqvarna's. They really have cheapened the quality. And the parts support is non existent. And that single piston ring setup is notorious for scoring up the cylinder walls. And the carburetors they use are cheap.

I don't care witch brand saw you work on I watch every video you put out and make sure I give my thumbs up.
Thanks I appreciate it°
Finally some old Stihl Content nice!
Gonna enjoy that series a lot!

I'd always wished I had an Arctic model ( parts for one) for my MS460. Used to cut all the time in sub zero (f) temps of our cold Montana winters!
I am a Stihl guy only because when I logged in Vermont, Stihl were the only saws the company bought.

They're pretty fast stock.
Why don’t you pressure and vac test it to be sure of where the air leaks are?
I think he’s trying to keep all his videos to a level that everybody with simple tools can do it.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us

Waiting for motoseal to dry is the hardest part of assembling saws!
@@aaronpowell4885 It is, I almost fired it up last night...😆.
Great video! Thank you. As a "stihl guy" i laughed at the banter! Very true. Thanks again.
Definitely the best of all time
Right there with ya, wrenching on a husky 3-series is always a quick ego boost when you need it.
Awesome video Tinman!!! That's one clean 044 friend. Have you ever played with the 285cd? Found a decent one I'm thinking about grabbin.
Hey buddy thanks!! I have a 385 on the shelf, not sure how similar they are?
the hooks like dentist is using works good for picking up crank seals.they small and having good hook.aim using it all the time.

Great video again, as always! Can’t help myself to like a Stihl over a Husky, both great brands though. Keep them videos coming
You could port a big bore kit and save OEM jug.
I could do that for sure
Love your vids keep them coming. Just a query, why dont you oil the seal?

only cool way to do a heated handle is reroute the exhaust gas. that electric shit just robs power. no thx bro
@@schlomoshekelstein908 yeah the old partner group style of heated handles were pretty cool, I've thought about trying to do something like that myself. But I'm curious how exactly the generator systems rob power?
I've never noticed any power difference, it does add weight for sure.

SHES GOING TO BE LIKE BRAND NEW WHEN YOUR DONE WITH HER ,,WELL DESERVED THOUGH THOSE SAWS RUN FOREVER AS LONG AS THERE MAINTAINED
I even ported my 20cc hedge trimmer!
You're a maniac! (me too).

Did the spacer have an o ring
Can you go over how the heated handle works! I also have an Arctic model flat top 066 mag.
Great video

Side by side comparison would be a great video!
Worm gear have a o ring that’s in it ? I see that mine had that when I took it off. Just wondering if a new one comes with it inside it again?
No one can figure out more clever ways to make simple stuff extr😮emely complicated than a German engineer.
Nice video ❤❤
I love the 044😮😮
Hhahahah I’ve been a stihl man my whole life. I definitely agree with all the “stuff” to take off
If it’s the original seal it speaks volumes for the build quality and longevity of the earlier models. In my experience they will outlast a Husqvarna.
I can’t tell much difference in the newer ones anymore 😢
LOL You have to love Stihl engineers....
German engineers can make anything simple most complicated.
I'm in Maine and I have a 044 artic
Love to see it💪
Tinman were did you buy that seal installer black rubber i been looking for them . happy thanksgiving my friend
Princess auto probably
thank you i just ordered a set at amazon lol thnks bud

Dunno how you do that with a screw. I just tried and snapped the screw in half

No saw noises? Dang, now I have to wait till next weekend 😢
If do you know where I can buy seals for an old Mac 3214
You should do a clone 440 or 660 for fun
Is this 044?
Only a wild guess wiiiiild guess. But your saws running rich because your fuel tank vents missing its top and its pulling vapor from there jnto carburetor
Nonsense! Everything needs ported!! 🤣
What problem this Stihl? I have Stihl 880 and 171
German engineers are the best in the world! Just ask them, they'll tell you, again and again and again.....
I think they have proved many times over 😊😊😊
Only in Canada eh
I personally hate the Husqvarna carb mounting I find stihl much easier to remove.

It's like comparing a Mercedes to a Volvo.
Those Germans like to over build everything.

I'll take a steel over a husky all day long
Most guys that spell like that feel the same way.
