Can you hear a clicking noise coming from the front end of your car or truck? In this video, Andy shows you how CV axles might begin to click, clank, or clack when they have problems! CV axles and driveshafts have an intricate set of moving parts that allow them to deliver power efficiently. But sometimes, the protective boot that covers the joint and contains the grease can get poked or ripped. When that happens, the joint can go dry, or get filled with dirt and sand, which can ruin the joint and make lots of nose!

Probably the happiest mechanic on TH-cam. Just loves his job.
My truck is just in the shop for new CV Axles & Hubs. I had a clicking turning hard left which escalated to a bad clucking.
The CV Axles were missing the rubber boots for two winters now.
Thanks for the informative video 👍

I just had our local garage replace both front axles in my 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 within the last two months. Unfortunately, last Saturday I had a complete axle failure while on the highway 20 klicks from home. I was able to limp home and get the truck into the garage on Monday. We found out that the tripod joint had failed, and the failure had nothing to do with incorrect installation as I originally thought. A brand new axle failing.. interesting. Your video is very informative and helpful, thank you.

I had a 85 ford Taurus with 150,000 miles on it and the cv axel was popping and clicking really bad but i couldn't afford to even buy a used axel so i tried something to see if it would keep it going a bit longer, i got a can of insulation foam and i filled the cv boot completely full of the foam and i let it dry over night, i ended up putting 150,000 more miles on that cv axel so it was original with now over 300,000 miles on it and it was still going with no noise, that insulation foam works really good by filling in all the loose areas and keeping the dirt out, give it a try and you will be amazed

Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It's like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. Its not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. Its not unbalances tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axl homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement and nothing helped. Axl itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. No I dont know, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didnt hit pot hole or anything. I'm driving quality highways. My car is vw golf 6 with only 110 000 km in very good shape. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I dont believe it will fix it. I will be glad for all ideas and suggestions.

If you get the clicking noise, don't put this repair off. Driving in this condition for a prolonged period can cause transmission damage, or it can leave you stranded, and damage other parts. My front differential snapped and I had to find a replacement for that. It could also cause a bad accident if it goes completely while driving at high speed. Also, spend a few bucks more for original equipment. I got Motorcraft replacements for about an additional $50 total. Do noth sides at the same time. Parts and labor for the half shafts and used front differential was about $1000. It probably would have been $2500 at the dealership.

Great vid. I have installed cv shafts, never took one apart. Since I am in there, I change the axle seals (I wish there was just one axle seal design and one tool). Mainly because I don't want to go back in again. You make it look so easy. Anytime I go under a car, something is seized, strut bolts, shock bushings, the cv joint itself in the way of the break caliper bolts or hub bolts etc. 5hrs to change hub, CV axle, strut to coil over. Murphy always shows up @#$# shock bushings. Don't get me started on shock bushings. Saw you video on that too.

I saw a video on the same subject and the CVJ in question had a tiny split in the boot with minimal grease depletion - there was still plenty inside the boot. A test drive showed no knocking. The problem had been noticed really early. However the garage still changed the drive shaft. They didnt answer my comment which questioned their decision to change the drive shaft. Wonder why?

    1. What fluid systems does the grease leak from?
    2. What should be done to make sure that the new axle is properly lubricated and that the fluid systems are maintained?

You can repair a split boot by filling it with grease using a plunger or a used hair dye bottle, then cleaning the outer surface of the boot around the split with a good solvent, and then applying a decent quality marine sealant like Aqua Seal or Sixaflex. That's the cheap fix.

The clicking is from the combination of it being a Chevy, being in a demolition derby based on the body, and the fact that corners were cut by wasting money rebuilding the half shaft. Rebuilding the half shaft leaves metal and dirt in the joints that prematurely wears the bearing down and fails all over again. Replace the half shaft with a new one. More efficient and lasts longer

Often times the replacement axles are of less quality then the OE axle. When they click it is often due to lack of grease in the joint. Removing and cleaning it thoroughly then re-greasing will remedy the issue.

I never saw the c clip? Did you have to remove it using a special tool? You just got behind axle with a big punch and hammered..everything else was great...just confused about how you removed c clip..
