If only other mechanics had the honest and pleasant attitude you show, I might actually go to them more often. There are so many who use their knowledge to make things sound more complicated than they are just to make a bigger buck. You sir restore faith in humanity!

For about 20 years I've been doing my own repairs. I learned everything I know on my own and from watching videos. This is probably the most informative best video I've ever seen ever and I've learned more in 15 minutes about suspension than I ever knew!Tomorrow my car goes on jack stands and I'm going to play around with The suspension.

I am praising the Lord that I came across this video! my 99 honda accord has been doing this for months! After watching this video i walked outside at work, took a small bar from the trunk, pried up on the stabilizer link and behold that's what it was!Ii even went on the passenger side where it wasn't making the noise and found that the condition of that one was night and day compared to the other. i could even duplicate the sound by hitting the stabilizer bar with my hand. Its even louder when driving just as you explained. Thank you Jim this really helped me!

Yes, I experienced that same situation over 20yrs ago, but on a different type of vehicle. It was aboard a nuclear submarine & no one in the naval shipyard could diagnose why the interlock indications were not lining up. I performed the same procedure you did to every linkage over 20ft in height & found a 1/2” valve stem (that the reach rod was connected to) was worn so badly that the valve had to be replaced. Thanks for sparking my memory synapses, as I had over 35yrs of diagnosing problems as a marine machinery mechanic.

Great video, very professional and honest. One trick I learned when replacing suspension or exhaust parts is to wire brush all nuts, bolts and threads down real good first, then spray down with PB Blaster, or ATF/Acetone mix (50/50) and let sit for 1/2 hr or more. This works really well if you don't have air tools and are using a long breaker bar/ratchet wrench.

Yes, indeed 2-make sure putting grease AFTER putting the new part is, must not forget, is an excellent and must do and critical reminder! Well done as always n kudos to the lady who has chosen very competent automotive technician! Well done, Jim! All the key reminders about put 5-tork bit to hold on the center of stubborn nut to come out and NOT to strip bolt head, which will be bad day to find not so easy to find factory OEM nut like that! Of course, always replace set like tire! testing was good even after putting new part we can see NO free play! Put very good penetrating grease to loosen old nut and may be two or even three spray and wait for socked in why some people even briefly touch rusted old nut to warm up nut to loosen, may be or may not good idea or unnecessary!

    Hey Brother
    Great little video!
Changed both sway bar links in my 09 Matrix and voila!..the sound was gone and car felt new...also changed the intermediate steering shaft, it had play in one of the universal joints ,causing a clunking sound. Toyota wanted $400 CDN for a new one...got one from the wrecker for $60!...and the links were $40/pair (new of course).
Once again, thanks for taking the time to make this video and spreading that knowledge!

It's possible he was referring to the ratchet as the "torx" wrench... It's a common and easy slip... I'm always a slow, double/triple/quadruple check, DIY car guy since I have no formal training. But any time I can use a ratchet rather than just a straight wrench will save time. On some of those cars, even using a 12 point socket end, you can only move the wrench 2 to 2.5 points each "turn" due to space without removing more stuff. With this trick, I can use a fine toothed ratchet to get at least another half point worth of turn in those tight spaces than with a fixed combination wrench. Should save between 20-30% of the "turns" "strokes" whatever per nut.

Drove to east coast no clunking but when I hit a bump it's a hard sound. First thought it was the struts/shocks but the car doesn't really bottom out. Went to dealership they told me it was my front sway bar link and rear sway bar bushings. Question is there a sway bar in the rear? Outside of the dealership what should a job like this go for? Have you ever tried the melting candle wax into the treads to loosen a nut?

    • @ironhorse1224

never heard of this, how does the wax penetrate the tightened nut/bolt it seems like the wax would be too thick to penetrate?

iron horse122 you heat the bolt then apply the wax. It heat soaks into the threads.

Moog products are about 3 times more expensive then car quest counter parts- I have replaced many many car quest parts and I don't see why anyone would spend such ridiculous money for the same product by using Moog or other....then again people still buy snap on, so there is those idiots that. Then again, most of them finance.

Not sure where you buy your parts but I spent less that $45 for two front end sway bar links and a set of both the rear and front sway bar bushings on Rock Auto, all MOOG parts for my G35x just last week, after shipping it was still cheaper than any parts store in town

WOW WOW WOW!!! Excellent video. I didn't have alot of knowledge about sway and stabilizer bars. I worked in a garage where we specialized in diagnostic work; OBD and all the way back to first cars with carburators and distributers. Love your work ethic, narrative and filming ability. I learned alot. I'm having front end issues. I'm working on the floor with jack stands and a floor jack so I'm limited on what I feel safe doing but if I have to take it somewhere;. I'll know what questions to ask and what the answers should be.

Really very informative and pragmatic for which I earnestly would like to admire. However, the audio is a little bit noisy though audible. If you also insert an audio clip of a pre- recorded front end noise and the effect after correction, it would have been more informative. With regards sir!

Just changed my struts after 75k in a volt! This fixed my clunking oscillation! The struts were ffff’d up, not working at all. They had been leaking for about 15k miles.

Jim, excellent video and quite professional. I have a toyota corolla 2008 model and it makes a clunking noise from the front especially on bumps and rough terrain. I have replaced new struts, with strut mounts, the tie rod looks good, the ball joint looks good. I have even replaced the sway bar bushings. The stabilizer link looks ok. Mechanic says it is with the power steering rack. and it needs a new power steering rack. There was a little play in the steering rack and i even replaced it with a used power steering rack which was from a salvaged car, but looked good. But still even after doing all this there is clunking noise. Can you please advise.

  • @briand4000

Just fixed an annoying clunk when quickly turning at low speeds in our 2012 Charger. There are steel rings or guards on the sway bars that center the bar between the rubber bushing mounts. They were too far apart, causing these guard rings (on the right side in my case) to hit the steel bushing mount when the car is side loaded. Took a drift punch and hammer, knocked it inboard a bit and reinstalled the new bushings. No more clunk! Check these steel guard retainer rings (whatever they're called...) if they're crushing the bushings and/or hitting the mounts.
