    I recently replaced the transmission fluid filter on my wife’s ‘18 Mazda cx9. There was no factory gasket they used some form of red/pink silicone. The new filter came with a rubber gasket.. it leaked almost immediately. I then found a cork gasket and switched it out and that one began to leak shortly thereafter. I then bought Permatex ultra red and followed the instructions precisely. Solid seal absolutely no sign of a leak 👌🏻👍🏻

    I use ultra black RTV and usually never have any issues.. Unfortunately when I was putting a new intake on my BBF 460 I did not follow to directions at all and torqued it down right away and fired it up about an hour or so later and sure enough it blew out the front valley seal.. now I get to redo it and follow the instructions this time 😂

    I did many gaskets but it was to hurry up and get the family vehicle running again. Now I'm getting into rtv because of craft and hobby. Interesting!

    Kids, ALWAYS use a crisscross tightening pattern. Somebody never taught this boy. Also, tightening to spec is great but so is doing so using multiple passes, for instance, if 45ft-lbs is spec, tighten all fasteners to 20lbs, then to 30lbs, then to 45lbs. An eccentric mechanic taught me this years ago. It works.

    Would you recommend using this stuff to replace a Valve Cover gasket?

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. I would NOT use this for a valve cover gasket. There are times when the manufacturer has you put a dab of RTV in places but not for the whole gasket. The design of the valve cover allows the molded rubber gasket to sit inside a groove making a very durable seal.

    • @woooose
      @woooose ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Valley Mobile Automotive Have you experimented for yourself though? People always say no for valve covers but I feel like they've never tested it to find out.

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@woooose I'm sure it could work but it would take a lot of RTV! You would need to fill the channel where the rubber gasket would go then have enough protrude out to make contact with the mating surface. Also in the future if the valve cover needs to be removed you would need to scrape all that stuck on RTV in order to apply new stuff for resealing. I think it would be too big of a hassle to be practical.

      @@DevontaePayne I was surprised with the results. This is still my work van with zero leaks from either pan. I'll still try to follow the directions but I think having a clean surface for adhesion is the most important part of using RTV.

    I decided to drop the transmission pan & change the filter on my vehicle, I had bought all the supplies in preparation but when I had the pan off I found out that Autozone sold me the wrong gasket 🤦‍♂️ I already had that pan off & the vehicle on my friends lift. He was getting ready to wrap up so In a pitch I used some grey RTV, slapped the pan on, Filled her up & I got her on the road. (I had to get back home)
    That whole night, I was stressing because I thought I'd messed up the seal due to filling it & driving it before it Cured. Thanks to you & Your video Im way more hopeful & assured now!!😄👍

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Joseph good question. It depends on what you are tightening and the gasket being used. Most manufacturers will specify the desired pattern (it varies). If I was using the rubber factory gasket I would criss cross the bolts to prevent "stretch" and "bunching" of the gasket on one end. Because this is my vehicle I took some liberties, I also didn't torque the bolts.

    As a general rule I NEVER use silicone. I much prefer gaskets. The part you claim gaskets are harder to get off, Well' I say the complete opposite. Silicone can take hours to get off however with a new blade I will have an old gasket off in minutes 'UNLESS' someone used something else with the gasket like copper spray or silicone to help the gasket stick then it will take longer. Anyway against my better judgment I am working on a 40y van and I can't find anyone who sells a Sump gasket so I got some RTV Ultra Black which is why I am here watching your clip. Before using it I wanted to see someone else using it and find out any cons I should know. Obviously there will be some that goes in the sump as you tighten it, Willl Ultra Back break down to mix with the oil or is it likely to block up the oil pump or filter?

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive

      You are supposed to put it on wet but only finger tighten it until rtv begins to squish out the sides. Then wait an hour before torquing it down. Then wait 24hrs before adding fluid and putting the vehicle back in service. In this video I wanted to see what would happen if you just slapped it on and torqued it right away and then filled it with fluid and drove it without waiting. I also did this in extreme cold conditions, below the recommended application temperature.

    • @ValleyMobileAutomotive
      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kevinhoronzy6011 It depends how much gasket maker you apply. The general rule of thumb is 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide by 1/16 to 1/8 inch tall. The bead of gasket maker is being squeezed out evenly on both sides, the inside and outside. So there's not a whole lot that squishes out unless you use a lot of gasket maker.

      @ValleyMobileAutomotive  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@josephhettiger2711 Interesting thought. RTV is oil resistant and can only be thinned with a solvent. In that case I don't think the uncured RTV can mix in any way with the transmission fluid. If any small chunks break loose they will be caught in the filter and won't be able to circulate through the transmission.

  • @nosurfenougheddie

    I think a follow up video is needed. Pull the oil pan and see how much, if any, excess RTV is in the bottom of the oil pan or now stuck to the oil pick up tube. It seems to me that you used an excessive about of RTV on the oil pan flange. And since you didn't let it cure enough according to the instructions on the package, that uncured RTV came off when you filled with oil and ran the engine.
