      +Relugus I don't think so. It would be much more devastating to see the other boat explode eventhough you decided not to blow it up. As Joker said in the hospital to Dent, when everything goes according to plan, nobody panics even when the plan is horrible, such as that the other boat explodes when you press the detonator. He didn't want that. He wanted chaos, mayhem, where you can't possibly predict what's gonna happen next.

    One of my favorite scenes of The Dark Knight trilogy. The Joker worked so hard to expose some of the worst traits of humanity by being an "agent of chaos", but he never realized that chaos also has the capability to bring out some of the best qualities and potential of people as well. This is why the people of Gotham won.

    that prisoner who threw the detonator out the window, he is my favorite character in the entire movie. Without hesitation, without any remorse, without anything, he made the right choice. he just kind of said "fuck this shit" and threw it out the window despite the fact that he could die at any moment. he has the single biggest set of balls I have ever seen in this trilogy.

    • @Tigressa101
      @Tigressa101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      dmanlip Well, he sees it like this: either he can activate the detonator, which will kill the other ferry's passengers and accomplish nothing other than show that Gotham's criminals have no morals other than "kill or be killed", or he could get rid of the detonator to pass judgement to Gotham's citizens who can forgive them or kill them, the latter proving they are just as bad.
      He probably knows he's going to stay in prison all his life so either way, it's pointless to save himself. The other criminals he probably doesn't care about as much but does want to show them that there is another way from the path already taken, a way to give back despite past crimes towards Gotham and its citizens.
      (P.S. It was hinted Tiny's character, the guy who threw the detonator out, was actually a reference to Killer Croc, Waylon Jones, which I find odd.)

    I love this scene so much. Democracy makes the "upper class" willing to kill, but no one can do it. Anarchy makes the "criminals" willing to kill, but one person doesn't let them.
    The democratic process (the vote) makes people distance themselves from the act. But no one can act.
    The anarchic process (intimidation) makes people almost unable to act. So the strongest person acts.
    Same result, two very different systems. And this scene pokes some holes in the workings of both.

The idea is even he is disgusted that they hadn't done this right away. I imagine in his mind he's supposed to be thinking "Are we REALLY considering killing an entire boat full of people?" What I take away from the prisoner being shielded is that even in fiction, the writer knows that prisoners would be segregated by race. But I think that realistically, there would've been more backlash from the prisoners and the prisoners would've probably had more emotional rage given to "Debo (prisoner)."There would've been a higher vote ratio in favor of killing the prisoners of the boat. He doesn't know the criminals threw their key out. If he had turned that key and blew up the other boat, he would effectively become worse then they are. If the criminals are supposed to be stonecold, hardened killers then why did the civilians live for as long as they did? The fact that the civilians were still alive proved that the criminals may have been guilty of breaking some kind of law, but they were still human beings, unable to take the lives of so many at once. If a criminal can show that much compassion and a humanity, then surely he can do no less?

    I love the prisoner scene for two reasons.
    1) It's a classic bait and switch that no-one sees coming the first time they watch the film. We see this man and we think, "This is it. This is the one who'll do the unthinkable." Even through his dialogue, we're persuaded by Nolan that he's willing to do the deed.
    2) That look of utter disdain speaks volumes. Without a single words, this prisoner condones the men who are supposed to be better members of society for their hesitation.

    Given that the Joker lied earlier in the film and tricked Bats into going after Harvey instead of the girl, I'd wonder if perhaps a little trick on the jokers part was this: The detonators were actually for their own ships. He lied and said it was for the opposite.

      Kate Turner It's possible, but personally I think this is more related to the other choice that the Joker forced Batman to make: the choice between killing to save others (or oneself) or refusing and remaining uncorrupted. Throughout the film, he was trying to force Batman to break "his one rule" in order to prove that rules have no meaning, and that eventually everyone abandons them when it's convenient. He says as much during the interrogation scene, after all.
      By giving the prisoners the choice to kill in order to save themselves, he was attempting to prove to Batman and the rest of Gotham that it doesn't matter how much people say that killing is wrong, because "at the first sign of trouble" they will abandon that rule and push the detonator. Giving them the detonator to their own boat might have been a characteristic twist on the game, like what the Joker did earlier, but it would be far less effective in proving his point - the people on the ship would be forced to confront the fact that they committed mass murder to save their own skin, which is precisely the same thing that the Joker hoped Batman would have to do.

      No, that guy accepted his fate not necessarily making him a good person but it did make him a honorable one. And respect was one out of fear for criminals. Humanity has hope but that is in those who can take responsibility for their wrongs and those that have the will to resist making those and that is hard with the lenient society we are building.

  • @hautakleightontam771
    @hautakleightontam771 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1559

    Ironically, when I first watched this scene I saw the citizens as a greater threat than the convicts, whom I fully expected to rebel against Joker's game. If you think about it, it's deceptively simple; the average citizen gets by in life because they follow RULES, which govern the colossal game we call 'society' and ultimately play a large part in shaping their world view. Criminals are criminals because they refuse to obey these rules, whether for personal gain, anti-authoritarian/social attitudes, or sheer irrationality. They don't like being told what to do.
    Now, you have these two groups pitted against each other in a different game, one where the rules are clear and you stand to win the ultimate prize. Which of the two would you trust; people who instinctively reject orders, or people who have built their lives on them? Remember, the former made a firm decision to toss out the controller, while the latter arguably chose to spill blood- but lacked the nerve...
    Choose wisely.

      Hau Tak Leighton Tam Don't forget that what we're looking at is fiction (excellent, thought-provoking fiction!), so we can't use anything seen in the video as evidence. Yes, that super-awesome guy tossed out the controller. Yes, the one who was going to kill the jailed people to save the civilians ended up lacking the nerve. But this is just what occurred in the fictitious choice.
      Don't forget that we have the benefit of knowing what happens at midnight: namely, that Batman stops the joker. If at the end both boats really were going to blow up and kill everyone on board, it doesn't seem crystal-clear to me that the right choice is to let that happen.
      For example, the children and young people on the civilian ferry have yet to enjoy some fundamental human experiences in life, and have very long lives ahead of them. That could be seen as a good reason to spare the civilian boat.
      Or maybe the best solution is to place the detonator in the middle of the civilians, and let anyone who wants to use it use it. If everyone is willing to sacrifice themself rather than play joker's game, that's fine, but no one should be forced to make the sacrifice.
      Also, speaking of fiction, I find it VERY hard to believe that the woman with the child would just sit there. That's her CHILD! Seems like, especially near the time limit, she would've fought to try to save the boat. Maybe she realizes that you never know what's going to happen in a Joker game.

    • @invictus127
      @invictus127 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      MrProgrampro Didn't the civilian boat leave that as the option? Which is why that one man got up and said "No one wants to get their hands dirty. Fine. I'll do it."
      And we also have the benefit of knowing that if Batman *doesn't* stop the Joker, the Joker will likely blow the remaining ship anyway.

    • @Oromanowar
      @Oromanowar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think it also takes a try and gripping onto the moral superiority complex of the average citizens ideas and expectations that their lives are worth more than the convicts. I've actually wondered if the Joker might have actually set it up for the people to blow their own boat if they pulled the trigger, he lied to batman about where Rachel was didn't he? He enjoyed chaos, and turning what people thought they knew upside down. I like this scene, and I'm glad the citizens decided not to go through with it. They passed the test of choosing self sacrifice in order to spare Some lives. That's why he was forcing them to make a mortal choice, either live and kill or be complacent and die. But I'd like to think they chose not to do it to show they also had the ability and right to choose.

    The majority of people will fall apart at the first sign of danger to their existence. Remember that the boat of civilians voted overwhelmingly to turn the trigger key. But it takes one man, either through strength of will (Batman, and the convict) or through a goodness deep-down that repels him from doing what's wrong (Gordon, and the civilian businessman) to influence the rest and keep society from collapsing.
    The Joker tries to show the world how arbitrary society is, and how it's unnatural for people not to eat each other. He arguably proves it by corrupting a symbol of society and control merely by taking one thing away from him--Harvey Dent, and his wife. But unlike Harvey, who couldn't withstand having the one thing grounding him taken away from him, Bruce is able to endure the loss of Rachel. Why? Because Alfred doesn't let him read the letter. People looking out for each other. Simple gestures, gestures that the person doing them probably doesn't realize the consequences of them. What holds us together is such a fragile social consciousness, something that cannot in truth be held together by an authoritarian force (Batman.) What the world needs is a good man to rally around (Harvey), not a bad man to fear. But those are few and far between, so we take what we can get.

    The greatest message in this scene is that of all the people, a priosoner is the only one who is noble enough to not be selfish
    Yet the civilians, the people, are willing to do it but do t want to get their hands dirty, they stop simply out of reluctance, not good will.

    • @stefanalexmedrano92
      @stefanalexmedrano92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Not entirely true. The prisoner did make the noble decision, that much is accurate, but in regards to the civilians, reluctance isn't enough to make someone willingly pass up an opportunity to survive in such a dire situation. The man on the civilian boat was choosing between killing and almost certain death to himself. Reluctance isn't enough to wipe out survival instinct; the decision not to push the button and nobody indicting him for failing to push the button and save them all means that consciously or not, that was his and their decency winning out over fear and selfishness.

    • @betheprotag
      @betheprotag 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This shows the power of both order and defiance can overcome treachery. The citizens feel none of them can push the button for fear of seeing themselves as a monster for doing so and the prisoner refuses to play Joker’s game with lives and sees which way the guard is leaning when it comes to the detonator.

    Its really interesting and incredible to watch this scene, how it’s crafted and written. We see that the guilty man isn’t gonna kill a boat full of innocent men, women and children, and even saved the head guards life, he was being selfless yet the innocent man was willing to kill the prisoners and even some of the guards on the other boat (I know that he stops). It’s a simple but effective scene that perfectly displays the difference between making the wrong and right choice.

    No comic book-inspired movie has ever had a finale with emotional power like this. Every time they say, oh the world is going to end or one city is going to be completely destroyed, but it was this scene, with only a few hundred lives on the line, but also the stakes of "Gotham's Soul," which moved me the most.

      If you took the time to understand what I wrote, you wouldn't be writing it again.
      I wasn't talking about the criminals pressing the button. I was talking about the civvies most likely deciding to press the button and then justifying their decision afterwards by saying the criminals deserved it anyways even though they themselves just demonstrated that they are no better.
      The criminals already know their sins. That's why they don't have pride. The civvies, however, still retain a holier than thou attitude. This is a movie, so the Batman will win coz of plot armor, but IRL, the civvies would press that button in a heartbeat. The criminals too, maybe, but there would be some fighting because they also have family on the outside. 50/50 for the criminals pressing it. 100 for the civvies pressing it.
      Then again, this is all speculation. Uncountable times, we can see IRL, people killing other people and justifying it. Anyone with a basic knowledge on wars can recognize this. There are no saints in human interactions. There are only the less demonic, as the Joker reveals.

    • @WelshSwan1986
      @WelshSwan1986 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I'm with you. Plus, a lot of the prisoners would perhaps see the situation as a chance for redemption and most of the people on the civilian boat would take the attitude of 'Well we're good people, those guys have done bad things so killing them is totally fair!'. BUT ultimately when it comes down to it, I'd argue that whilst there'd be plenty of people on the civilian boat saying they want the button to be pressed they wouldn't actually be prepared to do it themselves. like the mouthy guy who went up to press it and ultimately backed out.

Secondly, Joker stated that good people will be ultimately broken when they hear about Dent. Batman obviously agreed, since he decided to hide truth about Dent.
