  • I was going to do a complete brake swap on the Squareback but the rears were in pretty good shape and the new cylinders I ordered were the wrong ones anyway so I just ended up swapping the old calipers for a newly refurbished pair.

    Great video.
I like to connect the flex line to the caliper first, then to the hard line at the bracket. The threaded nipple of the hard line can spin around freely. You don't need to spin the caliper onto the flex line, that just seems counter-intuitive.
EDIT: nevermind, I finished watching the video and see that you've mentioned that you've changed your mind on this process to do it the other way around. Cheers.

I need those exact calipers, where can I find them?

      I got lucky!!
About 10 years ago I bought a Squareback that only had one caliper for some reason and back then you could still buy them new, so I fitted new ones and kept the old one in my stash.
Then when I needed another one to make up this pair, I found someone on a Facebook group who happened to have a single for sale.
Then I had them both refurbed. The refurb cost more than the brand new pair I bought 10 years ago!!

What caliper kit did you use up front.?

They're just stock Type 3 calipers that I had refurbished with new pistons and seals.
I *think* some BMWs came with calipers that can be used (they have the 3" bolt spacing) but I don't know exactly which ones.

@@2BugsandaBack Porsche 911 and Alpha Romeo use the same. 42mm bore on the cylinder.

Have you been brave enough to do the screw driver test yet?

@@2BugsandaBack It's when you want to know what's metal and what was metal.

Ah right! I thought you meant specifically about the brakes.
Yeah, I've been over the whole car. It's not necessarily all the same metal as it was when it left the factory, but it's definitely mostly metal. It does need a bit of welding here and there but it's better than the Mexi, even though it's 30 years older than it.
