Dead Island 2 Tour is out now on my channel! Even if you don't usually play those type of games you may still find the easter eggs fun and interesting!
Really wonderful talk, it’s neat hearing a confirmation of what I already saw to be evident in the results: A passion in the work beyond just delivering the product.
The Hogwarts legacy music truly does not get enough recognition. It's difficult enough to create a compelling game soundtrack, but to make a soundtrack that needs to be not only compelling, but also sound INDISTINGUISHABLE from John Williams' iconic soundtrack is truly amazing. I genuinely can't tell the difference between the movie soundtrack and the game. Mind blowing.
The one good thing about the next game is that the hard work is already done in terms of hogwarts and the grounds from the last game hopefully the story will be even better
You can definitely feel the people who made this castle had a real love for the source material as you walk through it. Infact after my play through i actually spent many hours going through all the castle and designed my own marauders map based on this layout as the most definitive version of the castle ever. Actually surprised me despite how much is in the castle ingame, there's still so much unused space i filled up with just about every room ever referenced in the books. With news of a possible hogwarts legeacy 2 in the future, i do wonder how much more they might add i'll have to fit into my map =P Plus really interesting to hear there was like 3 or 4 more areas on the overworld map, first i've heard of that. Would be really cool to see concept art or something of the full map, and what was originally planned and what was cut
The amount of detail in this is actually insane, half of this stuff I've never even thought about. That book freaking out when on fire is amazing 🤣🔥 Huge shoutout to Lee and everyone else on the team, you guys are legends 🙌🏾❤
@13:22 - I’m happy you included this anecdote. I’m currently working in the industry as a concept artist and experiencing a similar situation. This helps me to remember to remain persistent (but not obnoxious) even when a good idea is waved aside for one reason or another. Happens a lot in design, as is normal, but every once in a while a supervisor needs some external motivation to nudge them in the right direction. Those puzzle doors, especially once the solving key was learned, were a welcome addition to castle exploration.
One of my favorite things about the development process is the way that you really, truly bring the spaces to life! Your exquisite and meticulous attention to detail enables us to suspend our disbelief while we play, and make us feel like we're sincerely in your world! To "lift the veil" with these videos gives us, the players, incredible insight into that incredible process! Thank you for making this video, I'm excited to see more!
@@dan-gamedev HAHHAHA, thanks for the response! Honestly, I felt such a strong connection with this game. I work in special effects for film and museum exhibit design, and it is always a joy listening to someone talk shop and their creative process, I just never thought I would hear from a game dev like this. It really is special. I'll tune in to every one you make:)
Completely randomly fell into this thanks to The Algorithm. Really cool to have the guy who built my favorite digital castle working on my favorite digital spaceships!
I’m in love with the art noveau architecture mixture with the old gothic style of the castle. One underrated room is in the north hall - the centaur paintings, and the greenhouses and the DADA tower. Just wish there weren’t 95 bloody merlin trials and perhaps just 20, same with treasure vaults.😅
I want more, this is so good, and if you haven't tried the game Outward, it was made by a small team but it's absolutely amazing, and if possibly I would love to hear their thought process.
I recently replayed this game. First time was a revelation! On the last replay, I started noticing things that I would trade for more Hogwarts specific contents. Like all the meaningless caves and all the merlin trials, I would trade all of them for more mysteries and quests in Hogwarts Castle and in the Forbidden Forest. Anyway, it is obvious that this game is a product of love from the devs. I really hope this isn't the end of this franchise. This game made enough money for the next one to happen.
@@dan-gamedev I was watching your vidoe ,and notice your friend , said they left half way though, do they mean that they "leave" half way though production of the game and if so why?
I still feel the unicorn and a couple of the others made it pretty quick to figure out, I’m just annoyed that puzzle is never different. The first one was interesting to figure out, then it just became a chore.
@@zuldero true but lee saying, left, right, left, left, left and me going the completely wrong way multiple times would probably be a bit less entertaining haha, the next dev tour will be much longer
I hope they make Hogwarts bigger in the next game, and more reasons to spend time there. 40% smaller open world, 40% more more depth in Hogwarts with classes and activities.
@@dan-gamedev I have a question: Why isn't wizard's chess in Hogwarts Legacy not included as a mini game? You should have asked your friend about that. As in Harry Potter and The Order Of The phonix Game you can play wizard's chess.
Can you ask him about the big cuts? Like the "night gameplay" in the castle, restricted movement at night was cut by the looks of it? Thanks so much for this vid it's so interesting as a level designer myself!
@@EJHRB as a level designer yourself I hope you understand Lee wouldn't be allowed to go into alot of stuff like that so out of respect I avoided those type of questions unless he brought it up himself
Wish they would fix the damn butterfly glitch that keeps us from getting to 100% in some players' games. There is no way to get rid of it. I am missing a Niffler statue though everything is 100% except for that one thing. The map says I collected everything, and I checked guides taking me to every that type of collectable chest and the other ones, too, including triple checking all the ones in the room of requirement pet worlds.
@@flooid5506 I don't know myself, but I suspect the level of detail and amount of people walking around would cause issues with performance if you were moving fast through the streets on a broom, when youre far away from things the detail level drops so that's why you can fly near it but not wizzing around the city centre
The only thing I can think of in the castle that doesn't feel right to me is the moving stairs. The "movement" is just appearing and disappearing so they never lead to different places and it doesn't look great. The fact that the stairs are the only thing I didn't like in the massive castle is a testament to the absolutely fantastic design of the castle.
Really valid point, it was something I asked about but it was cut out of the video, there is alot of contributing factors to why they aren't like the movie stairs, a key one was they wanted to have large cylindrical towers but to do the movie style stairs the rooms would need to become more square and loose a bit of what makes them feel special in the process
@@dan-gamedev Interesting, thank you for that information! They are hard to do. I don't think they are all that great in the movies either. I love the round tower and understand the choices.. if I did it I would have tried to make them spawn in a few different ways - perhaps steeper at times so they bypassed a floor - but it's still just a minor niggle and I'm guessing they tried a lot of things before settling for the way it is.
In my second playthrough, I just treat the game like a LEGO game when characters are talking-- DESTROY EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE DESTROYED WITH CONFRINGO, especially in the Undercroft

We cant know exactly how it works without lee revealing tech secrets, but I suspect there is some kind of mark-up on different room volumes and it uses that, however I prefer your idea
damn "we didn't have enough budget to make this very cool thing for the castle" really seems to be a theme here.... I wonder why you guys spend ALL that money on an emty map that you proudly state"you need 30 min on broom to travel through". incredibly stupid design choices where made here ❤
Every game ever made has had to have scope changed, whether it be something tiny or something massive. Gamers just don't really hear about it, it's a shame because developers care just as much, if not more about their games than the players do, there was a period where Lee talks about him and his team working extra hours to get something into the game. Unfortunately there isn't infinite time and resources, so very intelligent decisions need to be made to prioritise what's most important to the game. Keep in mind a lot of teams are involved in AAA projects so it may be that one team has bandwidth to do it but the others might not so priorities need to be considered together. I hope this helps you understand why decisions in games get made, but I can say with certainty that there is usually more to things than you realise.
Harsher than I would have worded it but I agree with the sentiment. If I want boring open worlds I'll play assassin's creed, horizon, etc. What's never been done before is an open world BUILDING and I really wanted more of that.
@@dan-gamedev while I have a lot of feelings for how the game turned out, i enjoyed this little window into the making of the game a lot. it was fun to listen to, even if i wanted something different from it. the guy sounds like a passionate dude and i greatly respect his craft. i just didn't care much for how the game turned. it looked good, but the narative and characters... man they even managed to make incredibly likeable characters for the professors and then we go to their classes like once. they treat you and everyone around like a first year too. the damn writing makes no sense at all and i could list a lot of those things. i really hope they listen to the critique people have, should they try on another on. also i don't think avalanche never made a game like this before and for that alone they wanted a bit too much. it was a great feat none the less and i will keep an eye on future developments.
compared the one in the movies, this hogwarts is absolutely trash, graphics are muddy like its a 2011 game, npcs are soulles, optimisation does not exist. they made a hogwarts game without quidditch :D you failed as developers, but the title was so big that it became the best seller
