I grew up with Harry Potter as many people did, as did many people. I also played many Harry Potter games, so many in fact that I thought that it might be interesting to take a look at the history of Harry Potter games... at least the mainline games. As it turns out, as I was playing through the series, i noticed a pattern of the series becoming gradually worse and worse. So let's take a somewhat comprehensive look at the entire history of Harry Potter games. And take a look at why Harry Potter Games Used To Be Great... Until They Weren't.

I agree, and I played both the PS1 and PC versions as a kid. Chamber of secrets PC version is my favorite out of all Harry potter games, it has an incredible soundtrack (pause menu track is nostalgic as fuck) and the general athmosphere of the game somehow feels different to the other games (I guess it has a "darker" vibe somehow). Goblet of Fire felt boring to me as well and never finished it. Order of phoenix was average and it had some very frustrating parts like finding the statues. Half blood prince was a bit better but I remember it being incredibly short. Never played the deathly hallows, and don't think I missed out on anything judging by how it looks :D. But in the end those ps1 and pc games are the only ones I've bothered to revisit even as an adult.

In the older games they focused on making them FUN, but they also added little details from the book, which is really fun, in the movies Cho Chang is never mentioned ever until Goblet of Fire. But her name is already dropped in the Chamber of Secrets game! Gotta love those small things. I also have to point out that the reason they "made odd choices" and "removed" things that Philosophers stone next gen had, is because it was released after Chamber of Secrets, so it actually improved on it

The fact that you could get from one end of the castle to the other with absolutely zero load times was mind-blowing back in the day, especially for Harry Potter game standards. It was basically a Harry Potter metroidvania and going for that 100% by exploring every nook and cranny of the map felt super satisfying as a Harry Potter nerd in my teens. Perhaps I'm looking at it through rose tinted glasses as I haven't touched the game since it came out. I'll definitely go back to it at some point just for the sake of confirming/rejecting what you said in this review. I hated it as a kid and never really got past the Weasley house. Where as I adored and played the hell out of the gameboy version of Prisoner of Azkaban. Hell the Dementors in that game had one of the scariest themes I'd ever heard at the time and I still see that theme mentioned in disturbing game music lists. Always was validating to see. Would've liked to see you cover the gameboy version of Azkaban, but oh well. EA did make the most Harry Potter games, and the most well known to boot. So it's only fair I suppose.

I can level with you that I had a love/hate relationship with Chamber of Secrets (GameCube version) as a young lad because of the prefect stealth sections. I sucked at them, I had no measure of patience to get through them, and I couldn’t tolerate losing 20 points for getting caught. When I returned to the game in high school, I found out that abusing Luminous Balloons and having Stink Pellets ready made them (mostly) stress free.

iirc, the sorcerer's / philosopher's stone on ps2 / gc / xbox was released after the chamber of secrets on said consoles, as it was somewhat a yearly release series at the time, so technically, the 1st movie's game is an improvement over the 2nd's game. Iirc, it was 3 reasons: the 3rd movie was a troubled production, & they wanted ALL the movies to have "recent" console versions, & they wanted to have a 2nd chance to fix the problems people had for that game & game engine before they got to prisoners of Azkaban, so a year that had no movie, & they could use assets made for chamber of secrets to make a game based on the 1st story to quicken the development a bit, since they are very similar vibe wise in both movie & book form, so that's what they did to fill the "a game per year" check.

I consider Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets for GBC and Prisoner of Azkaban for the GBA to be the most interesting Harry Potter games. The reason is because they were unique, they were turn-based RPG's that had a Final Fantasy vibe. The latter for the GBA even had a pseudo-3D system for the fights, it was actually kind of cool. Even had some elements from the books that weren't in the movies, like Peeves.

I eventually was able to bring it home to play through the game proper, basically once it wasn't a common game for all of us to play on the daily, and I remember loving it but being so annoyed that about half way through that the Disc was scratched or something and effectively ceased to work at that point, never did get to finish it 😞 cool to hear that the 2nd HP on PS1 is basically just more of the same... Maybe I should make those the next 2 PS1 games to add to my Collection 🤔

4: What happened here? You just run through obstacle courses doing the same things repetedly. It doesn't feel as much like a Harry Potter experience.
5: Back on track. Although it doesn't really add to the experience from what you'd see in the movie. If you want to watch the plot unfold, just watch that.
    6: Same as 5.
7: I'm watching a walkthrough of it now. So far I like how it makes you feel like you're really on the mission. Though I wish there was a points system to give incentive to play again, or at least Bertie Bott's beans.
