Hey dude, this is great work
Another good one!
Some really excellent advice and incites, thank you!
I'm loving these dev tours. Also the fact of taking a look from the inside of one of my favourite games is awesome!
these are criminally underrated
Super cool conversation and fascinating stories! I love how Falko is like: there are no easter eggs in this one and then goes "that's my bike" :D
@@michelangelocellini2511 yeah that was a funny moment
This channel is a blessing
Loving these dev tours. Really interesting for someone like myself who is still finding my feet in the industry
Should have played this game. The Level Design Blockout along with the finished asset is a beautiful way to look at game development. The real life inspirations, especially the Scotland canyon shot at 10:13 - amazing. My favorite environment was the caverns though - and the vista reveal of the beautiful temple - wow.... To be able to create that and play it in game - what a feeling for devs.
So I've been playing through some of the newer Zelda games and it's impressive how they created their world as seamlessly as they did. It's mentioned in this video that Hogwarts Legacy had some optimization work that needed to be done, but what would need to happen to remove the various barriers around the world so that I could fly from the Ravenclaw common rooms over to Hogsmead without having to get off the broom or go into a separate instance?
@@timothyrosenvall1496 the two games are for completely different platforms with completely different levels of visual fidelity, so it's really hard to say. It's likely a limitation brought on by those things and the game engine itself
These are incredibly well-made and provide some incredible, rare insight into some of our favorite games! Please keep the awesome content coming!
Really great walkthrough, keep it up! Can't wait to see what you cover next. Although definitely out of the scope of this series, but I would love to see breakdowns of specific assets, hoping to learn techniques to help my own work.
@@brunerjamesart I would love to do that but I'm afraid your right, mostly for NDA reasons
Love these developer tours Dan!
First time i saw the guards fighting, is when this became one of my favourite games lol. I love the level of detail put in every room and corner. It makes me want to open unreal and try replicating one from scratch
Yeah stuff like that shows how special this game is
Technical wise it’s basically an elaborate loading door While some sections can be cut off, it allows for priority loading of scenes Going through that crack is a little animation that takes a certain amount of time which allows it to unload assets that are out of render and load more around the area you have just entered At least that’s what I use mine for. It’s a cheeky way to keep it flawless fps without having to worry about too many level assets being loaded at once and taking up the v ram on your card
Yeah that's the way most gamers interpret it being used because it makes the most sense. I knew it wasn't always that though and wanted to give Alex an opportunity to explain that it can be many many reasons, not just loading. You should check out the full video if your a game dev, you may find it interesting
Can someone explain what is the Slice mesh technique that was used to hide the seams in the cliffs?
Every studio has its own version in some way or another but the principle is: you take a base mesh, and you dispalce it based on a tiling material, you can blend multiple materials using vertex colour. It then gets baked down to a game ready model. That is a very simplified version of the process but that is the gist.
It's a very high level Houdini technique, Alex explains it pretty well theoretically. I highly doubt there will be a guide anywhere on how to do it. But if you look into mask based displacement in Houdini that would be a good place to start
Wow. As a game dev student and indie dev who's working on my first commercial product, I love this. I hope it continues to be a series. I'll watch the Jedi Survivor dev tour next! I greatly appreciate hearing yours and Lee's expertise on such an enjoyable game.
cool series! looking forward to more tours
im watching this modding for the sims rn.. been watching all your stuff while i do this lol
@@handlehaggler I'm glad it's being used as second monitor content! Maybe I will do a Sims dev tour at some point
@dan-gamedev if you could i can guarantee a ton of views :p The sims 3 community goes ape for anything like this. Keep up the dev tour series. Absolutely top shelf content
Womp womp
The temple reveal is an incredible moment in the design. Really great work here!
Cheers for having me on, this was a blast to do ! :D
So interesting - well facilitated!
Subscribed! Great video!
These are awesome, keep em coming!
Jedi survivor released today so go take a look!
@@dan-gamedev You know I'm already watching haha!
Fantastic!! This series is fantastic! Keep em coming!!!
Oh ok now i'll consider playing the game.
first
Just finished watching, such a cool walkthrough of the level! Tons of gold advice from Alex
When I first saw HP2 Chamber of Secrets, my mind went - "I wish this was a game- oh how amazing that would be, ill play the heck out of it." Fast forward to Hogwarts Legacy and this is the game that I wished for but due to time I was unable to play it. Partly your fault- keeping us reigned in Star Citizen :) I did enjoy the conversation nevertheless.
Thank you so much for sharing this 💕 I wish they would make a full ‘making of’. I wasn’t a fan of the Harry Potter universe before this game and just fell in love with everything. Now, if I am ever having a bad day, I walk through Hogwarts or through the Highlands 🥰
This was a fire recommendation from the algorithm and I'm so happy I watched it, it was so interesting

This is absolutely amazing! We need more videos like this! Awesome stuff Dan. I've been a game dev for over 10 years and now I'm a CG supervisor. Jason, Rick and Samir are next level, I'd love to work with them!
@@matthieugouault they are incredible that's for sure! I have about 5 episodes in planning right now! So make sure to keep an eye on the socials because they are going to start coming very regularly!
@@dan-gamedev Can't wait! I'll be waiting and watching them for sure! Keep it up and I love your work on Star Citizen!
Cool!!! I hope this will continue into the next game and/or DLC. Amazing!
That’s beautiful
So cool to see the passion behind the scenes and it’s the corporate overlords that harmed the game. I think this could have been one of the best games developed in the last few years if they had another year to work on it. Hopefully the next game will be an improvement and not just them phoning it in because Harry Potter sells.
Love this! The comparison to the IRL locations was incredible. Great work all round :)
These videos are awesome, keep going you’re gonna blow up with these!
That's really a lot of easter eggs. A lot.
Easter egg island 2
Thanks for having us on! Was a real pleasure mate
Amazing work Jason! I love Dead Island 2 so much and it's one of the best looking games out there in term lighting and photorealistic assets. Can't wait to see what you guys are cooking at Facepunk!
I randomly clicked on this video and the last thing I expected to hear was anything related to CIG lol
@@Broccoli_32 it's a small industry!
amaaaazzinnng thnak you
Can you ask him about the big cuts? Like the "night gameplay" in the castle, restricted movement at night was cut by the looks of it? Thanks so much for this vid it's so interesting as a level designer myself!
@@EJHRB as a level designer yourself I hope you understand Lee wouldn't be allowed to go into alot of stuff like that so out of respect I avoided those type of questions unless he brought it up himself
the talent is definitely there with this game. i wonder how this game did on ign rating. i saw it on steam
Wow thanks a lot for this Interview. It is wonderful to hear that the designers have as great of a love for this world as the gamers.
@@HeraldWitte thank you that's exactly what I was hoping to do with this series, more coming soon
i think this could have been uncut. just to walk with you trogh the castle with the developer was amaizing
@@zuldero true but lee saying, left, right, left, left, left and me going the completely wrong way multiple times would probably be a bit less entertaining haha, the next dev tour will be much longer
@dan-gamedev maybe fastforward that bit. But you know the source material better than me xD
compared the one in the movies, this hogwarts is absolutely trash, graphics are muddy like its a 2011 game, npcs are soulles, optimisation does not exist. they made a hogwarts game without quidditch :D you failed as developers, but the title was so big that it became the best seller
The Hogwarts legacy music truly does not get enough recognition. It's difficult enough to create a compelling game soundtrack, but to make a soundtrack that needs to be not only compelling, but also sound INDISTINGUISHABLE from John Williams' iconic soundtrack is truly amazing. I genuinely can't tell the difference between the movie soundtrack and the game. Mind blowing.
