    I know this video was 5yrs ago so a little late . But I'm a big fan of Castle from the days and I have re-entered the hobby again. I purchased a Losi 8ight xe elite and am going to run the castle 1y 1515 2200kv . Which is sensored motor. I wish Castle had an option like the mamba x which is sensored for a 1/8 scale buggy. Not a lite-buggy. I'm going to run the mm2 but bec only has 5-7 adjustable and is non- sensored but for vehicles up to 15 lbs. I'm at 8lbs and mamba x rated for 9lbs. Need an X series between the mamba x and the mm2 . Other issue is mamba x is Roar approved, mamba monster 2 is not. 1515 2200kv Castle is Roar approved . Tracks near me are large 1/8 so 2200kv best works. Most run 1900kv hw and tekin I get it. But a few run the 2050kv for these large tracks. On smaller I will just gear down , 0 timing , reduce punch ,reduce throttle, and run cooler temp for sure. Still won't be as quick acceleration as the 1900kv on short tracks but it will still be competitive. Reach out to Castle and inspire the in between Castle esc Roar approval for up to 15lbs vehicles . Hw 8 and tekin rx8 seem to own most of the show. Come on Castle, great motors we need a Roar approved esc for heavier 1/8 buggy and truggy classes. Great video !!!

      I talked to Castle about ROAR approval a long while back and got the impression there was some politics going on there. Castle builds their ESCs "different". They rely a lot on advanced control of timing and output, which is how they get the level of performance we have come to expect from them. I got the impression that ROAR was asking them to do something or disclose something that they were not willing to, so they did not pursue certification of their larger ESCs. I'll ask again, though.
      Either of the MMX ESCs (6S or 8S) would be great fits for your applications... if they were roar approved... which they sadly are not. 😕
      Thanks for watching!

      I think the real question is how much top end speed do you want and how much gearing are you comfortable with. What kv motor does that car have stock? I'd probably start with the 1900kv or 2280 kv 1406 Slate moter since the stock motor is a 35T brushed system, but I suspect the higher kv versions will also be aright. I've been amazingly impressed with the low speed control I've had with my higher kv motors while bashing so I think you probably can't make a bad call here.

    A viewer had an interesting comment, which I had to delete because of the language, but I wanted to repost my response for the record. Basically, he said he didn't trust any "sponsored" review because the reviewer will bot say anything bad out of fear of being cut off from more free stuff. Here's my reply.
    2 points:
    1) This is a family friendly channel, so I need you to please edit your comment removing the curses or I will have to delete it.
    2) Companies sometimes send me free stuff to review, but I have a firm agreement with them that I will give my true opinion whether they like it or not. On a similar note, I only endorse products that I believe in. If you watch my channel, you will see that I am not gentle on hardware. I happily abuse my gear. When I have a problem, I let people know along with giving them advise on how to resolve the issue. Good companies actually appreciate this since it helps people resolve issues without needing to contact tech support.
    I really do appreciate your point, which is why I don't want to delete your comment. The way I look at it is "Why would I want to have a company who makes inferior products continue to send me crap equipment?" That just destroys my credibility and makes me look stupid. I have relationships with several very high quality brands, but nobody's perfect.
    For example, I love my SP Racing rubber tires (which were sponsored), but they are only good to ~115-120 mph. I let people know this so they knew what they were getting and would not try to push them beyond their limits. I love my Sidewinder 3 ESCs (which I bought with my own money), but they tended to overheat bashing on 3S. So, I upgraded the cooling fans to eliminate the problem. I beat my Mamba X's MUCH harder and never had a single thermal shutdown, so Castle obviously listened and fixed their thermal problem on these newer ESCS.
    People watch my videos because I try not to give a lot of baseless opinions. I base things on facts as much as possible. I'm not going to tell you that something performs well without showing you too so you can make up your own mind. And if it has problems, I'll show that too. If a sponsor doesn't like that, so be it.

    • @RCPhysics
      @RCPhysics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually do not own this ESC. From what I hear, it's really solid though. It is really marketed as a Mamba Monster Jr. It is well suited for cars up to 11lbs running up to 6S, but it has a fixed BEC 5.5V voltage and does not support sensored motors. It also tops out a little less current than the Mamba Monster 2/X, so it isn't really suited to an all-out build. However, if you have an 1:8 scale basher or are looking to do a crazy upgrade to a 1:10 power system, this may be a really good option.

    I just bought the 2850kv crawler series combo but my truck is a 1/8 and 14lbs. I bought it already installed it but I think I screwed up and should have got the 1515 series for heavier trucks. Is it possible I could use the Mamba X ESC that came with my crawler kit and put 8th scale motor on the truck? Or do I have to buy the Monster X ESC?

    • @RCPhysics
      @RCPhysics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Castle actually sells the Mamba X with the 1512 AND 1515 motors, but they recommend limiting applications to vehicles weighing 9 lbs. or less. Even though it's a pretty beefy ESC( and I've logged 150+ Amps on 3S while bashing.) The Mamba Monster X with a 1515 would probably be a better fit. Castle rates the 1512 for just 9 lbs. vehicles and the 1515 for up to 15 lbs.
      You might be able to get away with the Mamba X if you really take it easy, but no one builds a 15lbs rock crawler to take it easy! LOL!

    • @RCPhysics
      @RCPhysics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your data logs will give you the answer to that. if the ripple voltage in your data logs is more than 2.5V, you should seriously consider a cap pack. One of my Gen4 4-Cap or 8Cap models should do the job, depending on how much ripple is there. If your max ripple is ~1.5V, you are all set, no cap pack needed.

    Great video and info, I’m just wondering because I have the mamba x esc and it says it can run 6s but there are no 6s motors for it and I was thinking about putting a mamba monster with the mamba x esc so I can use 6s but the bullet connecters on the motor is 6.5mm and on the esc is 4mm so it won’t fit so I’m stuck. Thx keep up the good work.

    • @RCPhysics
      @RCPhysics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Castle actually sells the Mamba x with its 6S capable 15-series motors. It you purchase a combo, the motor already has 4mm bullets on it, but you can also remove the 6.5mm bullets most ship with and add high quality 4mm bullets to them. The 1415 2400kv and even 1410 3800kv motors are rumored to be able to take 6S for short bursts (drag or speed runs) if you are really, really careful not to over-rev them, but that's living too close to the edge for most folks.

      The 1515 2200kv and 1512 1800kv motors are good for 6S and fine for using with a Mamba X in a lighter car. The 1512 2650kv motor is rated for 4S to avoid over-revving the motor, but it will run fine with a Mamba X. (My son runs that combo in his Monster Slash)

      I had something similar happen with one of mine. It turned out to to be a bad solder joint on one of my battery connectors (aka my fault). I re-soldered the connector and everything worked great. I'd double check your battery connectors first Hopefully that's the problem.
      It is possible that you got a bad ESC. If the battery connectors are ok, Go to the Castle website (or call them) to process a warranty exchange.
      Have you connected it to Castle Link? If it fires up properly in Castle Link, it is probably a battery connector issue. If Castle Link doesn't see it, your ESC is probably dead.

    • @RCPhysics
      @RCPhysics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Full Disclosure: I'm a Castle Guy. I've never actually run a HobbyWing ESC or motor, but I know many guys swear by them. That being said, I know if I just threw out some subjective comments about the wonders of Castle power, smoothness, or engineering, some guys would just dismiss it out of hand as more closed minded fan-boy talk. So, I'll try to keep this comparison objective. For the record, I acknowledge that if Castle & HW did not both make quality, high performance products, both brands would not have such loyal followings. That said, here are some of the concrete reasons I'd recommend the Castle Combo (and why I am such a big Castle Fan-Boy in the first place).
      1. Data logging / Data Viewing: I'm about as hard-core a geek as it gets, so data logging has completely changed the way I run and tune. The fact that Castle also has a user-friendly interface to retrieve, display, and analyze data is one half step short of heaven for me. These logs eliminate a lot of the guessing game that usually goes with RC tuning. Instead of wondering if a setup change made things better or worse, I can see the result of a change in real data and tune accordingly. This is a real game changer, especially if you do anything competitive.
      2. Programmability: HobbyWing and Castle both allow you to tweak ESC settings, but I think the Castle SW and their new Bluetooth capability take things to the next level. Not only do the Castle ESCs provide all the "basic" tweaks most of us are use to seeing in an ESC, Castle let's you completely transform the operation/personality of their ESCs (especially the sensor-capable X-Series).
      3. Aux wire: It took me a little while to fully appreciate what a game changer this feature was. Most folks know that the Castle X-Series ESCs have this extra control channel wire, but a lot of guys haven't figured out what it can do yet. Castle has a couple of great articles on their blog about this, but in short, you can configure this wire to allow you to tune your car on the fly or even switch between two completely different operating modes with very different personalities. Depending on your radio, you can configure this channel to control several ESC functions win a simple On/Off functionality or dial in specific tuning input WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING!!! On some of my speed cars, I have it set up to enable a "parking brake" so my cars won't get blown around by the wind while I'm staging for a speed run. On my bashers, I use it to switch between "INSANE" and "Kid Friendly" power levels, but I'm thinking about changing things up by using it to switch between "Rock Racer" and "Crawler" modes to let me go between full basher power and trail rig control in an instant.
      4. Customer support: If you have a problem, HobbyWing has an email address that you can send message to and hope they can help you sort things out. (Good luck with that.) Castle has an email address, too. And a toll free number that you can call and talk to a real-life human being who knows a LOT about pretty much every application of a Castle product you could imagine and will stay on the line with you until they figure out your issue.
      5. Warranty. Castle has a 1 year, ROCK SOLID warranty. If you have a problem in that time period (that wasn't caused by you doing something completely insane or stupid to void your warranty) they will probably replace the product. AND if you are beyond that 1 year period (or did the un-named insane or stupid warranty voiding thing) they have an out of warranty replacement program that is pretty darned amazing. Hobbywing gives you 180 days of warranty coverage after purchase with a receipt or 240 days after production without a receipt. After that (or if you did that un-named insane/stupid thing) you're on your own.
      6. 6S capability: The Mamba X is rates to run up to 6S..... and it will too.... with pretty much any motor you plug up to it... hee hee hee hee ;-)
      That said, even though the 1512 motors are supposedly limited to 4S, they will take 6S just fine if you don't over-do it. Thankfully, the Mamba X and Mamba Monster X ESCs have a function that will let you set a temperature limit that will cut power if the motor goes beyond your pre-defined safe temp. Of course… only a complete lunatic would run 6S on this type of setup...…. right...….. heh heh heh heh :-P
      I hope this was helpful.
      Oh, and I almost forgot to add that Castle products like this motor ESC combo have crazy-stupid power matched with high reliability and customization that make them sooooooooo sweet to run and may even help male pattern baldness... objectively speaking of course. ;-)

      So far, I've just run the Mamba Xs in cars that previously had Sidewinder 3s ESC, and there seems to be a clear increase in power without any overheating issues. You can run an 1512 on this ESC, but I wouldn't advise it. The 15-series motors can pull a lot more current than a 1/10 scale motor like the 14-series, which is more than the Mamba X is rated for. I suppose you could take it easy, but what fun would that be?
      The 15-series motors should really be run on an 1/8 scale ESC such as the Sidewinder 8th or a Mamba Monster X / MM2.

    70A to 100A rating amps continuous... so where you did dig that up? Last generation of MMP was locked with a seven key from them... cause it was a 60A esc. NOONE talks about their amp rating.... just marketing more then enought!! :). SO they released the amp rating on this one? Where did you found that rating? Last time i check website or manuals...no talk about that! Either way both older MMP or this X are very good esc's and the only on their size that actually go 6s. Sublime! :)

      These Amp numbers are based on my independent research and data I collected on previous generations of Castle 1/10 scale ESCs. The Mamba X is a little different, though because the data logs will show EXACTLY how much power they can push. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. LOL!

      This is really more of a tit-for-tat situation. Castle provided me this hardware for me to publicly beat the living snot out of it. They were confident that once people saw what these systems were capable of, the results would speak for themselves. For my part, I promised to tell the whole truth, good and bad, and they were cool with that. That says a lot about the company.

      You can get good hardware for not huge money. Many folks participate in RC trading groups on Facebook. If you plan it out right, you can barter and trade yourself into some pretty nice gear. Me XO-1 ended up costing me ~$200 at the end of the day.

      It's amazing how much you can earn doing extra chores. We encourage our kids to come to us when they want a new "big-ticket-item" and work out a plan so they can earn the new thing themselves. Parents love it when you work to find a way to earn things for yourself. ;-)

      I could never forget your dad. We've known each other our whole lives (since we were ~5 years old). I'll talk to your dad and see if you guys can come over some time. We could all go out bashing together. :-P
