      Because Batman can't be made to fit this universe. Even in this universe, Batman just doesn't do all the team-player-under-someone-else thing. If anything, Butcher would be Batman.
      Not saying he has to be morally good, but it's a little like if Homelander couldn't fly and shoot lasers, that is so integral to Superman that you would say: that is not evil Superman, it's evil Captain America!

      Chid Anthony Starr is a phenomenal actor. He somehow is totally convincing as a lost little boy, a petulant child, the all American golden boy super hero, and the sociopathic super villain, and often embodies all of the above within a single scene. Then I saw an interview with him, he’s a kiwi with a much higher voice than homelander, and my jaw kinda hit the floor. Even the voice is 100% acting. I hope this guy gets all of the roles.

    I dont think they were trying to make the deep relatable. I think they were trying to make him seem pathetic. The deep is a man with no power and who nobody respects. The general public doesnt seem to care about him and I mean even within the company he is treated like a joke. Sexually assaulting starlight was his pathetic way of expressing power over someone else. I think the intention here is to take away power from powerful people who have commited acts of sexual assault. Whether or not that works with you is a different matter, but I dont think he was meant to be sympathetic. I just think people have a general tendency to feel sympathy towards anyone who is suffering.

    I was incredibly impressed by the first season of the boys and loved the characters and their realistic developments. My favorite part is Homelanders ability to "grow" at the end, he gets past his mommy issues in a weird murdering way. His mommy issues weakness may show itself again in the future but I can't stand it when super villains are never able to grow or get past their mental weaknesses. Also the fact that Homelander saves Butcher just for the sake of being cruel to him by showing him his wife as proof. I'm really curious how they will interact in the future seasons

  • @Quintusblake
    @Quintusblake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There’s an aspect of super heroes in the boys that the comics stress that isn’t really shown in the show which is that the supes are incompetent. They get no training and get pumped full of their own ego. That gets watered down in the show and you really only see it in the plane scene.

    • @gaiusjuliuspleaser

  • @prixat
    @prixat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    'The Deep' was one of the big changes from the comic. Homelander decides Starlight's hazing should be blowing all the guys except The Deep. The Deep from the comic seems to genuinely believe in being a hero.
    The show obviously decided to take all the piss-taking of Aqua-man talking to fish etc. and turn it up to 11. This didn't quite work as also he became the sole focus of the sexual assault.

    I definitely agree that The Deep is pretty dull as a character and at no point did I feel any sympathy for him. What I think the writers are trying to explore is what people are willing to forgive, as Bo pointed out these "heros" represent the modern elite as well as power itself, The Deep like all of the other heros has abused his power in gross fashion and I think in the second season we might see him become more of an actual hero (an actual character) and eventually seek true forgiveness from Starlight but narratively he can only do that after he finds out who he is and if that person believes past actions require reparation.
    And if I could buy the redemption of a incestuous child murderer and just plain murderer (Jamie Lannister) then I guess The Deep deserves a "Narrative Chance" at the least.
    Also those gills were nasty.

      What child did Jamie murder

    • @Beandipforyou
      @Beandipforyou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@josezuniga7030 it was the attempted child murder of Bran. However bc Jamie's INTENT was to Kill young Bran that means that Jamie would be able to live with killing a child to cover up his incestuous relationship.
      When it comes down to a courtroom, intent is everything so I'd call him a kid killer bc he was quite blasé throughout the scene. He didn't feel guilt, therefore he could and would do it again in the same circumstances.

    I never comment but something hit me while listening. When Bo was talking about Billy standing face to face with Homelander he said, “he’s like Batman” and I thought, is that what he’s supposed to represent?
    Batman is my favourite superhero character and some common criticisms people in the comics have of him is 1) A traumatic experience led him to be obsessed with revenge (justice). 2) He recruits impressionable people to support his cause (sidekicks). 3) Its all about HIS cause and nothing comes before that. 4) He is arrogant and feels he always knows best.
    The purpose of the Boys series is to take these characters to the “extreme”. So, Billy could represent Batman’s character flaws in a grittier and more extreme version. Lastly and most importantly Billy stands in front of homelander, filled with anger and no fear, A man standing against a God. Batman vs Superman.
    Just a thought.

    I'm not sure you guys are getting the point of the Deep's arc. I think the whole thing was designed to make you question way narratives work. Yes, all this sad stuff is happening to him, and because he's become the underdog, your instinct is to be sympathetic. But just because bad people have a rough time doesn't mean you should be on their side all of a sudden. I think more susceptible people will increasingly sympathize with this guy until he goes full psycho and does something completely reprehensible. Because he hasn't done any soul-searching, hasn't acknowledged how his terrible actions hurt people. He's too busy hating himself for being a failure while simultaneously feeling sorry for himself to spare a thought for other people. So before you condemn his arc as trying to elicit unearned sympathy, ask yourself, is that what they're really doing? Or are they screwing with cheap redemption arc tropes, like they're screwing with all the other superhero tropes?

    I kind of liked the Deep parts, I enjoyed him as a character, it's also sort of a parody of how Aquaman is considered lame as shit in the DC fandom, but everyone in the comic respects him.

    I think The Deep's redemption is probably going to come in S2. He's a dirtbag for what he did to Starlight, then he experiences it himself. I have a feeling he's going to go full eco warrior and start sinking ships and stuff and/or save Starlight at some point.

    the fact that A-Train and the creators made me feel something when Pop-Claw betrayed him causing A-Train to kill his lover... his acting is great there. and when Homelander found out he was juicing V, I genuinely felt scared for him.
    The Deep and the finger banging of his gills, I could of done without that tbh. but itts proof yall only cared about aquaman because Jason was playing the role. i think thats the reaso nfor the deep being so terrible to show yall aquaman wasnt shit till a musclere long haired good looking guy played him. LOL
    Homelander is the epitome of white privilage, dont wait for me to explain it, you figure it out.
    Mave....? blah, she was so boring with her lesbian arc. lol she use to bang Homelander! wow!

    I don't think they were trying to make us sympathize with the Deep. I think he's just a comedic side story that the audience is supposed to laugh at which is why he's shown to be a complete asshole in his first scene, otherwise we would feel bad for him.

    I don’t think they are trying to redeem the deep. I think it’s more of a karma situation. He’s not supposed to be sympathetic I think it’s more revenge porn for the audience. A-train had more of a redemption arc, where we can see where he’s coming from and feel sympathy for him, I think if that’s what they wanted from the deeps arc that’s what we would have gotten not what we got

    • @kreiyu
      @kreiyu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      See where he comming from and sympathise with him? A train is nothing but a drug runner who murdered his girlfriend. There is nothing sympathetic about that to me. Yeah he loved her, but he still killed her. Atrain can try and blame hughy for getting pop claw to spill some beans, but a train started it by killing hughies girlfriend and not giving a fuck about it. Its only the first season. I think the deep might learn some lessons from all this and his redemption could come next season. Though, personally, i read the comics and neither of those heroes were redeamable in any way and when the show first started to make them relatable and sympathetic it just felt off. Its like trying to make hitler a relatable and sympathetic person.
      In the comics most of the supes have grown up in their vought bubble. They arent relatable people.
