    The deeps subplot didn't really redeem him to me but it did mean that I understood him more. Furthermore, I don't think he deserved being assaulted himself as some sort of karmic justice. It would have been better if they got him to understand the effect of his actions through character development and gaining empathy for Starlight instead.
    That being said, the deeps assault did show that other side of the superhero coin, that some people viewed lesser heros as freaks. It could be interesting to follow this bit closer next season, maybe by investigating the kids that were given the serum but didn't become heros or who didn't develop 'cool' powers.

      @@alexarias5717 But thing is if it's legit he raped her, I'm not sure ultimately that paints her character too well overall. Because then she seems to so quickly completely cut her own husband entirely out of her life, without another word? Hell even plenty of the people in our society who are more pro-life, they agree with exceptions for rape. Not saying that she HAD to do that of course, but it would've been more than understandable. It's always a devastating concept, a married woman being assaulted by another guy but then never bothering to report it, but THIS was a mega-extreme kinda decision to pull. I could be wrong but Homelander PLANNED to take that plane down before going up there, and Maeve knew it when they were in the cockpit and he made the plane un-flyable. It allowed him to control the narrative... that is instead of using “saving the passengers” to gain congressional support he ensured their deaths to induce FEAR of terrorism, which is far more persuasive in the argument for getting them the access they wanted.
    This show of deadly ruthlessness was when Homelander really scared me.

  • @patliao556
    @patliao556 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't think the Deep is meant to be sympathetic at all. Eric Kripke said that the only reason there's any charm to the Deep is because he's played by a fantastic actor in Chace Crawford. I think that the writers intended his pathetic decline to be schadenfreude, because he's really the first villain we see act in an outright aggressively villainous way, and because he traumatized Starlight, the moral center of the show. You're supposed to laugh *at* him.

    • @kreiyu
      @kreiyu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was laughing. His little journey is hilarious. Though i dont know why he lets that chick finger fuck his gills? And i dont know why she would think he would find getting jabbed in his fish lungs erotic?

    • @overlydramaticpanda
      @overlydramaticpanda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh... I'd agree we're mostly meant to be laughing at him, but only up to a point. I mean, the way that gill-rape scene was written, acted and shot made the whole thing seem just as disturbing as when he assaulted Starlight in the first episode (and I mean that even just ignoring the inherent body horror; a scene of a female sexually assaulting a male is normally played for laughs or at least not being as bad as the other way around - both those scenes would have still been disturbing if the genders were flipped). The Deep's been a pretty pathetic character (and that was entirely intentional) throughout the entire series - he's bullied by the rest of the Seven, he's well aware that his own superpowers are weak at best and downright useless at worst, he's actively forbidden to do anything that *he* wants to be able to do to actually help (and every time he tries, he fails pretty spectacularly), it's implied he's the most prone to objectification, and no one really hesitates to kick him out as soon as they're given an excuse to do so, and then once he is kicked out he's sent somewhere where he is essentially completely useless.
      By the end of the series (after said gill-rape scene and certainly by the end of his breakdown), I don't think we're meant to still be thinking of it in terms of "oh he's just getting what he deserves" and more that what's happened to him is horrifying in its own right. In a way, they've already used his character to touch on satirising another aspect of the "celebrity culture" they've got going on with the Seven: that ordinary people feel as though they have some kind of ownership over them and don't really care about them or, in extreme cases, even see them as being real people with thoughts and feelings, and personally I think that's an angle I'd love for them to keep exploring and using his character to do that makes a lot of sense. It's difficult because the creators have also got to navigate the fact that if they give him a redemption arc of any kind, a significant portion of people will inevitably get up in arms that a character whose entire introduction essentially consisted of embodying one of the most red-button issues of the day will be being made too sympathetic and therefore will be sweeping said red-button issue under the carpet, but I do think he already stopped being someone the viewers should actively want to see bad things happen to. Full-on redemption/sympathy arc or not, I betting he's still going to be much more of a neutral character from here on out.

The stuff with him trying to save the sea creatures had my gf and I dying. And they very Ohio-specific humor is hilarious if you are from or know someone from there. We have Cedar Point, guys! Given the aeroplane and the rape storylines it seems clear that they're not going to use the same storyline for Black Noir as the source material. Which is a shame because that is some deep shit. It's also rather curious considering it's really the basis for everything that happens - the killing of Robin is just our entry point in the story.
      So they'd better have something pretty good up their sleeves for Noir - I shall be hugely disappointed if he is merely reduced to a running joke of the one who never talks.

    Why would the Teddi/Munki guy think Homelander's sex with Butcher's wife was consensual? What evidence other than the word of a psychopath do you have? Against the video of Rebecca coming out of the room dishevelled and distressed, then sitting on a park bench for hours before disappearing forever? You appear to assume some kind of relationship exists between them, but this is the first time Homelander has seen her since the rape. And her reaction upon seeing him was hardly one of delight, just as she was clearly in distress when Butcher last spoke with her and tried to find out what the problem was.

  • @kevinw712

    I just knocked out this show all this past weekend. I'm SO GLAD I went into it knowing as little as I did. I knew it was supposedly like a meta, subversive take on superheros, but that's all. Never saw a trailer or a clip, just a couple unofficial set photos and tons of praise. I didn't even know the heroes would be the BAD GUYS. I knew they wouldn't be perfect people, but not that our protagonists were regular dudes. My jaw was on the ground after the Robin obliteration. But I did know a s2 was coming, so expected a cliffhanger.
    You're talking about similar actors, Huey felt to me like a mix of Adam Brody & Joshua Jackson. But I get Hader, too. By episode 7 when we still hadn't seen Black Noir's face, I either thought it was eventually going to be some major plot reveal (maybe someone else we already knew), or it was some joke itself, like "there's already one black guy who's got a story, the second one's just to fill the roster so who cares what he looks like".

    I don't think Homelander took down the plane on purpose. It's a pretty consistent theme in the show/comicbook that humans aren't coordinated or disciplined enough for that kind of power (and the world is too fragile for it, too). His eye-lasers literally shoots where he is looking and I know my eyes are very quickly and easily distracted by shiny things and will briefly jump in whatever direction they want. Just think how many times a year you accidentally bump into someone, step on their feet or stumble and nearly fall. When superheroes to that they wreck shit.

    9:00 I think that's the big thing about Homelander. I thin he possibly COULD have saved the entire plane if he actually exerted himself, but he's so fucking lazy that he didn't feel like it. We never see him actually putting in any effort, ever. Even in combat he just calmly walks around cutting people in half with his laser eyes, we've never seen him strain or use even a fraction of his full strength. He's like Joe DiMaggio, where he won't even make an attempt to catch a fly ball, unless it's a situation where he can make it look completely effortless.

    You guys should watch the extra scene in the x-ray tab of Amazon Prime which shows Homelander as a youth in the lab being tutored. It shows his rise to sociopathy and his need for a mother dynamic. As Butcher would say, F'ing Diabolical.

    Homelander is an interesting character in that when we are first presented to him he seems to be the one good upstanding guy who is extremely naive about what everyone else is doing.
    We later find out that no only is he complicit in their crimes, he's the worst one of them all.
    Just like the *actual* United States Government!

    In complete agreement. The costumes are designed to be more silver age, and the fictional character backstories created by Vaught are all designed to be closer to Silver age comic hero backstories. The story however is postmodern blended with bronze and steel age comic books. It's more reminiscent of a mutants and masterminds campaign with is a house rule that real physics needs to be calculated in and the character complications in flaws have to be portrayed realistically.

    I genuinely enjoyed the series, but as a fan of the comics i have to say that they missed a lot. Not just about content that they couldnt fit in, but about the characters, their personalities, the roles they fill, and the connection they all have with eachother. If you watched this and liked it, please read the comics. They are 10 times better.
