I can't thank you enough for this video series. As a young man that loves to turn his own wrenches on his own Harley, these videos are priceless. The hands-on knowledge that you're passing on, is so valuable to guys like me.
Another great video, love your Pug, we also have two running around and a Boston, looking forward to the chain and clutch adjustment, will be doing it in the very near future.
just want to say I love your videos and I do have a question for you I have a 2015 FXST e it's got a 1999 1340 evolution and I had to put a new drive belt on it and while putting my inner primary and outer primary back together my gasket and seal kit come with these little metal washers with rubber on them and I don't have a manual and I've not found a video on TH-cam yet that tells me what bolts does these go on along with these 3 white plastic looking washers and was just wondering if you could steer me in the right direction cuz the last thing I want to do is take it back apart to fix an oil leak so with that I thank you and God bless
Thanks for the question, the metal washers should have taps on them. They go on the inner primary bolts. Once installed you take the taps and pry them up over the bolt heads to lock them in place. There is probably 2 long metal pieces with holes and taps on each end. They go on the 4 bolts on the front of the inner primary around the crank shaft. The plastic washers are for the primary chain adjustment shoe, 2 go on to the 2 bolts that hold the shoe the 3rd goes on the adjustment bolt. Hope this helps. Glad you like the videos. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
I have a 95 ultra Glide classic I'm thinking about installing a self-adjusting shoe for the primary chain do you have any recommendations or wisdom on this
I personally don't like the self adjusters. I've worked on a number of them where the self adjuster has over tightened the primary chain. They're not all that way, but I've run into it. If you decide to put a self adjuster in just be aware this is a possibility. Thanks for the question and ride safe.
Hey pal, ty for another great video. I got a question for ya....what year HD did they start putting, that inside washer for the compensator?? I have a 2005 fatboy, 15 anniv, with the 95" bore/1550 cc ,B motor, and every HD indy told me i DID NOT NEED it for my year, being 05', please clarify, if correct. ty so much. I always thought i did need that washer, either on the inside, as a spacer or at the end of the compesator nut as a washer??? the compenstor on my bike was always loud.( maybe cause i would use a 10w-40, for lubrication)?? dont know....ty again, in advance friend, be well and safe. Rich from ny, Queens again!!
Thanks for the question. As far as what year HD started using a spacer, it's so long ago I can't give you the year. But it would be the year they started using compensators which I believe was 80 or 81, but don't quote me. I would have to look it up. On a 05 Fatboy there is definitely a spacer for the compensator, but on a 05 it is not inside it's outside on the nut. So yes there is a spacer. Running 10 40 oil in the primary is light, I wouldn't run that weight oil in it. The lightest weight I would recommend would be 20-50. So if your compensator is making noise that could be one reason. The other reason could be HD used the same compensator on the 95 as they used on the 88. They are known to fail on the 95 and 96. The springs come apart inside the compensator on both those engines. So if it's making noise it's probably telling you it's about to fail. So you might want to check it out and do a upgrade. Thanks for watching.
@@tinkeringwithharleys ty....yes,im hoping my indy did install it. Im sure he did. I got another one for ya, if you dont mind? I had a brand new clutch pack assembly installed. (HD pt# 37802-04A)by HD dealer, i could not find neutral, for the life of me, when i got the bike back. So i opened the derby cover, and i smelled a burnt/fish smell(now i am running formula+ and i know it does stink when used, hopefully thats the smell im smelling?) and did a clutch adjusment, better, but still gotta rock bike a little to find Neutral... further examining the clutch, i see a QR code, and a number: 21D120057 stamped on the brass pressure plate!!! i noticed a bleuing color, all over the starter ring gear, mostly by the rivets,so i looked at my old clutch(they gave back to me) and its the same thing blue color, with 30,000 miles on the old one. I even seen the same on the bike you are working on,the blue color, ring gear?? just hopingbthats normal from factory?? they(HD) Also reused my old locking plate, grub screw and adjuster 7/16" nut??? i thought the new clutch would have these parts,as standard?? unless, im thinking they f...ed me and swapt out a used clutch on me.....yes paranoid and mad i am!! just want to be certain its a NEW CLUTCH, and not some ol one laying around the dealer. ya know!!! i spent 480.00$ on it,......better be new. i thank you in advance i do apologize its a long one, but gotta know. ttys pal.
The ring gear blueing is normal, that's how they come. When you get a clutch basket from HD that's all you get, everything else is extra. It's common practice to reuse the clutch nut, jam nut and allen bolt for the adjuster. The only thing that would be new would be the retainer clip. Finding neutral has been a issue with the 5 speeds. Check the free play on the cable. I'm assuming it didn't do this with the old clutch. I'm also assuming you have a heal toe shifter. How many miles on the new clutch? You might want to try putting it in neutral while you're rolling. It will go in much easier when you're coming to a stop. The oil has a strong smell, but it shouldn't be burnt. Finding neutral may work it's way in after some miles are put on it. That's about the best I can do. Thanks for the question.
@@tinkeringwithharleys wow....you solved another problem. I highley appreciate your experience and excellence, in your mechanic skills. sorry for the vague info , the clutch was put in feb, with a hp 1.4 kw starter, but couldnt ride it till last week. so it has maybe 200 miles on it. ( i did start it in mid winter,5 deg, , with milky oil and kicked it over a couple of times, bad move ,fouled plugs! with smoke.... and sounded evil...metal on metal knocking till oil got up to jugs...yikes) so feb, i changed oil from 10w-40 milky oil to 20w-50 clean oil. last week 60 deg, rode it. rode great,no smoke, started right up,,clean oil, nice crisp shifting, but NUETRAL, is hell. so i pulled derby cover, got the foul smell, and did a adjustment on clutch and cable, better, but have to do exactly what you suggested, roll it forward an inch, then BAM! IM IN! SO like you said, a new clutch needs to break in??? gotcha ya, makes sense. ty so much for putting my head at ease.( and putting up with my questions)..i was going back to HD, WITH A BAD ATTITUDE AND A BIG BAT!!! your a miracle, hope you and mugs are well....God bless! ps....that BLUE COLOR SCARED the white out of me...no joke..lmao...ty again, now i can sleep!!!
@@tinkeringwithharleys hey bud.. not to get confused.. but I had Harley-Davidson install a whole new clutch assembly, not just the clutch hub basket, that's why I was curious I didn't receive the adjust the plate, adjuster screw or the adjuster nut. All good?
The guy who owns the bike had a silicone beaded outer primary gasket and wanted me to use it. If it had been a regular gasket I would've used the white lithium grease.
Ahhhh. That explains it. I got my 93 softail gasket from harley and it's just plain jane so I'll use "your and the 'ol timers trick" and coat with lithium greese - want a good seal this time! Good videos. Thanks for them.
Definitely was manual chain tensioner. The only self adjusters I'm aware of were in the 06 Dyna and in 07 became standard on everything. Prior to that everything was manual.

Great timing, im waiting on a shifter bushing from HD but other than that I'm good to go to put everything back together.
Glad to hear it. I hope your Harley dealer gets parts quicker than mine does. Thanks for letting me know.
