Nice Tip. So installing spark plug tube seals can be done with a bolt and washers on a removed valve cover instead of buying a bearing/seal install tool. it just takes longer but cost a lot less. And here i was going to use a socket and hammer to drive it home. I like this better.
Ver cool idea with the PVC pipe, I have plenty of scrap PVC laying around here and will be using my miter saw to get the even cuts/edges and a little sandpaper to smooth them out so to not have sharp burs. Thanks for the video!
Good video but very frustrating watching you work with one hand while the other is operating the camera, especially the one handed screwdriver routine. Possibly a small tripod for the camera ?
Thanks for the constructive criticism. I have always used a tripod but these must have been situations where I couldn't for some reason. I agree, one hand on tool and the other holding camera does not result in a good steady shot.
Nicely done on the install. Just what I was looking for. Replacing mine I rushed it by using PVC and a hammer. Mounted in crooked, ruining the new seal. Now ordering a. new one and will press it in there s way. Thanks for the good video. Where do you get your parts for hest quality and price?
Good video, had to do this myself several times. I use petroleum jelly for assembly lube on seals, o-rings and most engine parts with great success. I also like to check the inner seal surfaces with a dental pick to make sure I haven't rolled the inner surfaces.
I just did the freezing cv axle seal a couple days ago, I just stuck mine in a handful of snow in 12 f. temps we are having right now, I knew about it a long time ago, and yes it does work. When you chill metal it shrinks, therefore allowing the seal to slip into the housing much easier than when it is warm.
How to put a new seal in place, as I tried once with some shots of hammer but it'll damaged my seal and got a new one but don't have such a thing that you have to push it back in place that was the main horrible part of replacing seal diy any suggestions bro.
Thanks it was just the info I needed for my Courage 20 Kohler only 60 hr. on it and was a bad oil seal when I ck it out on my own time 5.00$ fix instead of a shop saying new engen time :)
Most folks don't have a slide hammer or a trunion puller...but. Use a longer screw and after threading it in use an adjustable wrench or a claw hammer that can span the shaft of the screw but not clear the head. Give it a snap upward and out comes the seal.
You just pour seal removal fluid in your trans and let it warm up for 20 minutes. Shut off engine for 10 minutes. Start it up and run it 3 times for exactly 5 minutes each... then it will be gone.
@The Original Mechanic, in order to prevent engine surface damage, Toyota recommends putting rags between your pry tool and the engine surface when removing the seal using a lever technique.
Does everyone lube the entire seal. I put lithium on the entire seal on my Generac engine. And it still leaks. It's just a hair beyond flush. It's even as I love-tapped in with a plastic pipe.
Geez... it took you TWENTY SECONDS to drill through a plastic dust cover?!!!!!! When you said "sharp"... I thought you meant 'with a cutting edge'... :-(
Hear a Penguin had his car in with a seal prob,, Penguin went across the road for an ice cream while waiting,,,went back to shop with ice cream all down his front..the mechanic said blew a seal... Penguins no Ice Cream..
smithraymond09029 I would just take my time, use some common sense with this, watch what I'm doing and not be in any hurry just like he said in the video
Do a screw like that on the top and bottom of the seal, so you can pry from one side, then another. Will come out easier.
Nice job and it just takes patience
Excellent little video for the home mechanic. Thanks
+streakyfish You're welcome and I appreciate the comment.

Yes It was a Cub Cadet LT 1045 46 in. deck has a 20 HP kohler OHV courage on it ......
gm leaves a groove on 3 cross points to get a screw driver in and pry out with out scratching any surfaces, Genius. Takes 1 minute to get out.
Thanx for sharing this. Ordered the parts and feel confident to do it myself now!!! GReat!!!
You're welcome and I wish you best of results on your project!
Thanks for this. I’m going to try it on my pressure washer oil seal. Can I use red & tacky grease around the seal?
Automotive bearing grease works fine. I don't know about red and tacky though.
According to this link th-cam.com/video/WOfOHMI6Wnc/w-d-xo.html @Mercedessource says that you can use tacky grease.
Any hints on putting the serpentine belt back on? That seems like the worst part due to how tight it is in there.
If you don't have two people it's tough. I made a video several years ago that may give you some ideas. th-cam.com/video/H2Jg1giLUqg/w-d-xo.html
Put those seals in the freezer a few hours before installing. Quickly install them while they're still cold and they will drop in like butter.
lizard944 Now that sounds like great advice. I will definitely try that next time. Thanks for the comment!
I'm trying this tomorrow
The Original Mechanic of the
does it work?

Very good and useful video. Kudos!
i have to do the seals in a redblock volvo engine my mainquestion is how do i know how far to press the seal in
what kind of grease? mineral? are you sure it's not going to corrode the plastic and gum of the oil seal?
I just used standard automotive bearing grease
Awesome thanks for the vid and tips. Well done. I'm working on my 99 3.0 v6 camry now about to remove the camshaft feeling much more confident.
+YELLOW HOUSE Good luck with your job and thanks for the comment!
How did to get the flat washer out ?
I noticed that some seals are now made of plastic instead of metal. This will make them more difficult to remove, as`well as other issues.
I just had mines replaced still leaking any help
welding a slide hammer onto the end of a screw can make this job very quick and easy
If you own a slide hammer you need this video.
Hi great video mate! I have a leak coming from my input shaft seal, do I take the same steps as this video?
Thanks. That would depend on if it's the same type of seal.
Great vid good ideas especially some helpful comments thx
Thanks it was just the info I needed for my Courage 20 Kohler only 60 hr. on it and was a bad oil seal when I ck it out on my own time 5.00$ fix instead of a shop saying new engen time :)
James Goodknight Good work! What is that though, a mower?
Do you have to remove the oil from the engine? thanks for posting
+Mike T Yeah, you have to drain the oil.
would this stuff work on a pinion seal leak? if so u would just pour it into the differential correct?
+rammit 82 Sorry, I'm not familiar with that job.
Oil is mixing up with coolant on my gilera 125 cc.. where is the sealer located on the inside of the engine
That's usually a head gasket, which requires an extensive tear down of the engine.
@@TheOriginalMechanic thanks pal..
using pvc meterial to push in the seal was good idea , good jop .
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Good on you for the eye protection reminder.
Any suggestions on how to replace the cam seal on a 1987 VW cabriolet?
+Patrick Catoe Sorry, I'm not at all familiar with that car.
Patrick Catoe
get rid of it vws suck
Put the screw in... make a hook tool like a claw hammer has... insert tool in a slide hammer... one bump and easy out.
Most folks don't have a slide hammer or a trunion puller...but. Use a longer screw and after threading it in use an adjustable wrench or a claw hammer that can span the shaft of the screw but not clear the head. Give it a snap upward and out comes the seal.
Cars are the worst invention in history. Why can't it be something more simple as a transport mechanism??
Function of rear crankshaft seal???
To keep the oil inside where it belongs.
Thanks for the video.
when u place the new seal, what kind of grease is it my friend?
+Alberto Jimenez I used general purpose automotive grease.
+The Original Mechanic d
I just took a hammer and beat the crud out of it. Just kidding, thank you for the video very good job.
Want to know how to replace an oil pump. want to DIY on a 2008 kia sedona???
Great job, thx for the vid
+zyplex1 You're welcome and thanks for taking the time to comment.
this oil pump?
So if im driving i hear something fall off then oil leaks that mean the seal came off??
No, a seal can't fall off. Make sure it's oil. That may be brake fluid or power steering fluid.
Did u remove gear box first
sohail asghar Loos like Front seal
I should watched this before i tried to fix mine couldnt get seal in straight for the life of me going out later and redoing it like this
I've messed one up myself and that's why I made this. Thanks for watching and commenting and good luck with your re-work.
Thank you from Pakistan
great video oil leak stop thanks uk
how can you replace a rear main on a v8 with the transmission still in.?....is there a tool for that?.lol
You just pour seal removal fluid in your trans and let it warm up for 20 minutes. Shut off engine for 10 minutes. Start it up and run it 3 times for exactly 5 minutes each... then it will be gone.
If you gotta ask that question the best tool for the job would be a local reputable mechanic lol
🙄😑
Nice job
Didn't like the prying against the case could have placed a small piece of wood to help prying
@The Original Mechanic, in order to prevent engine surface damage, Toyota recommends putting rags between your pry tool and the engine surface when removing the seal using a lever technique.
Awesome.... Thanks bud!

I don't think a little grease would make a seal leak. I would wonder if your seal was machined wrong. You may want to try another.
Theres no context for where in the engine you are.
help pls!.... how to detach the transmission dowel from the engine of crosswind xuvi 2005?
Sorry, I don't have any idea, but maybe another viewer does.
That's ok... thanks for responding anyway... ;)
Just buy a transmission dowel detachment tool.
Geez... it took you TWENTY SECONDS to drill through a plastic dust cover?!!!!!! When you said "sharp"... I thought you meant 'with a cutting edge'... :-(
The seal is metal inside
❤
✌️
So I don’t drain oil first ?
No harm draining the oil, but I didn't.
Hear a Penguin had his car in with a seal prob,, Penguin went across the road for an ice cream while waiting,,,went back to shop with ice cream all down his front..the mechanic said blew a seal... Penguins no Ice Cream..
Like it,good joke.
That's a good idea maybe screw on each side it would have been more even when you pull on it
Oil seal calculation formal
Hello ???
Oh no!!!!!!!!!!! The novice mechanic will try this and mar the crap out of the shaft surface.
smithraymond09029 I would just take my time, use some common sense with this, watch what I'm doing and not be in any hurry just like he said in the video
very dangerous, if that seal got broken near hole, you could got screw hit right on your face.
