Yep maintenance is the only way to keep them rolling. When I think my last pan head was a 1956 and that ran and looked great. I liked the lines on it better than the new ones. Mine was 60 years old at the time.
You just gave me alot of confidence to do this on my own, I been wrenching a long time, and this really isn't as bad as other people have made it out to be, I just picked up my first harley last summer, never worked on one or tore into one, mines a little older than this one, but its not as complicated as a few people have made it out to be, thanks for your time and ride safe brother
Glad the videos helped. Yep its not as complicated as some guys make it. It's all common sense. Very simple systems, and for me the older the better. Good luck with your 1st HD. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Great job sir, ---but as any FYI (and the way I have installed inner primary bearings) I would had stuck that bearing in the freezer for about 6 hrs.---it would shrink the bearing a bit, makes it less likely you would scrap the primary wall when pressing the bearing in place....just my thoughts.
Thanks for you're thoughts. I've done freezing bearings before the install and it works very well. But since I have a press I prefer to install the bearings using the press. Thanks again for the comment and thanks for watching. Ride safe.
Excellent video on the oil leak. Very detailed and your insights to other parts needing replacement is helpful. What do you think this would cost? Parts and labor? Thanks Bob
Glad you liked the video and thanks for the question. For a new inner and outer primary from Harley if memory serves it would have been 8 to $900, that didn't include the news clutch basket, compensator or primary chain. The gaskets and seals ran about $60. I found a good used inner primary and outer for about $200. My guess in a big repair shop that whole job with labor would have run from $2500 to $4000 range depending on the labor rate. Again thanks for the question and thanks for watching. Ride safe
Excuse me, don't you put grease on the bearing to lubricate? Only with the oil that you put in is it already sufficiently lubricated? Thanks and good job.
So your new inner and outer where sourced from a breakers! Out of curiosity, a ball park difference in price between this and new covers? Most wrenching videos out of the US always filmed in really big garages. Makes us Europeans jealous.
Thanks for the question. Last I checked a new inner primary was about $350 and the outer runs about the same so total for both run over $700. I work out of my garage. I've seen the videos out of the big shops. I'm just trying to pass a life times worth of knowledge onto the next generation so it doesn't fade with time. Thanks for watching.
@@tinkeringwithharleysthank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm working on my 1st harley now. Fixing leaks in my primary and putting new cam tensioners in. Love the bike,, it's an 03 fxdx. Custom paint
Glad you enjoy the videos. With the older bikes they do tendency to leak at the primary but usually it's a easy fix. Congratulations on getting you're 1st Harley. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
Thanks for the question, I started in 1966 with a 1935 flathead. I'm self taught by trial and error. I worked as an engine builder in the 70s and also transmissions. I have a video that gives you a little bit more background on me. You can find the video on my homepage it's called "Waiting for Parts". If you want to watch it that will give you a better idea about me. Thanks again for the question and thanks for watching.
My 99 fxr 3 leaks like really bad only only primary fluid dripping while riding...leaking while at stop lite ....changed gasket at primary same thing......any clues on your end goes on bottom of belt guard & side of tire..... please help ... ..
Thanks for the question. Just from your description it sounds like the leaks are towards the rear of the primary. When you say you've changed the primary gasket I'm assuming it's the outer primary that you've changed. My thought is it's in the inner primary but you will need to eliminate things to find the leak. It sounds like a seal is leaking at the main shaft. First I would check the outer primary. Check the drain plug first to make sure it's not a leak there, 2nd I would remove the inner primary for cracks and make sure the flat edges of the outer primary aren't warped or cracked keeping the outer from sealing. From there I would check the inner primary. Remove clutch and compensator. Remove the inner primary and check the seal in the inner primary if it's bad there will be a lot of oil there. Than check the inner primary for cracks. If you find no problem there the leak maybe one of the 3 seals on the main shaft of the transmission. I'm guessing you've checked the primary fluid level as well as the trans oil level. With a leak that bad one or the other is going to be low. But knowing that the oil is blowing back on your tire and belt guard leads me to believe the leak is at the main shaft. The only way your going to find it is by eliminating from the outside in. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the question. A James seal is a upgraded seal supposedly. I've used both and never saw a difference except in price. The James seal is more expensive than a HD seal. Thanks for watching
I like the idea of replacing all new parts it's real preventive maintenance thanks a million
Glad you liked it. That's the secret to keeping these older bikes running like new, preventative maintenance. Thanks for watching.
@@tinkeringwithharleys yes I am 67yrs old been riding since 14years always did my maintenance

I wonder if you ever inspected the stator and rotor inside
Yes I did inspect the stator and rotor, they had both been replaced. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Good to see the primary finally being completed that was a big job. Do you know the model / year of that HD? Thanks for sharing
Glad to be getting this one finished finally. It's a 2003 Softail standard. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the question. A James seal is a upgraded seal supposedly. I've used both and never saw a difference except in price. The James seal is more expensive than a HD seal. Thanks for watching
It’s like brain surgery! 😬
