@@tinkeringwithharleys Thank you sir much appreciate will this gasket instead of the o ring for the inner primary work on a 2002 FXDL ? I can’t find this gasket all kits come with a o ring!? Currently got a leak and it seem to be that location
@@tinkeringwithharleys that's great news! I have removed the fuel tanks as I was seeing some rust and the grey primer they used was peeling, was using my high pressure wash to try and clean them with some white vinegar / deoxidene to get rid of the rust, the left side tank was easy to clean, about 95% clean metal now but the right side is proving to be a pain as I'm struggling to get all the paint pieces out of there, was considering to use some kind of paint stripper but I'm scared I will damage the finish if anything leaks, so that's where I am at currently. Still have a long way to go unfortunately. It the tanks only had a metal finish it would have been an easy job, but with the paint element it complicates things.
I've run into that problem myself. I'm not sure what they use now inside the tanks, so I can't recommend a solution. On the older bikes I had it on I just put a different tank on, but I also had a lot of gas tanks laying around. Take your time getting it road worthy, you want to do right so you have no problems. I meant to tell you, and it's a oversight on my part. If you haven't already done it. When you try to spin the rear wheel when trans is in gear make sure you take out the spark plugs. It will be much easier to move with no compression in the engine.
@@tinkeringwithharleys thanks Tinker, I will try that, getting to the point where I am going to need to order parts from Harley Davidson, I'm not happy with the local part store lubrication, and they have nothing for v-twin engines not to mention primary / trans oil, will rather pay a bit more and know it's the right stuff, will keep you updated. :)
Thanks I looked into the place for second hand parts, Postage from the US is through the roof, I'v found an aftermarket primary here in Australia for $400
Hey Pal ..thank you so much for the series !!very interesting and very informative. Like the way you explain things!! Just had my inner primary bearing( with the upgraded one piece bearing, )but my indie just did the bearing .. he did not do any other seals, behind the primary ?? I did have somebody else in there 3 years ago. But still? $ 525.00 later,? Should I call, and complain? Again nothing is leaking though!! Thank you in advance
No you don't need to complain. I'm sure he looked at the jackshaft seal and it was OK, otherwise he would've replaced it. The only seal he needed to replace was the bearing seal which I'm sure he did and included it in the price. You can't reuse seals once you take them out, if you do reuse them you end up with a bad oil leak immediately. Since you have no leaks he replaced it. Thanks for watching.
You are a great mechanic that does repairs correctly and with excellent communication. I do have a question on primary chain pensioners for my 2009 Ultra Classic V Twin with the 96 motor. Do you think it's wise to remove the OEM tensioner and install a manual adjustment Baker tensioner? I'm not having any primary issues just thinking ahead since my Harley has 65k miles currently and doing this a a preventive measure. Please advise thank you sir.
Thank you for the compliment I greatly appreciate it. With 65K on the bike the shoe probably needs to be replaced. I've never been a fan of the self adjusting primary shoe. If it were my bike I would change it to a manual. If you're going with a Baker adjuster, that's top quality. Hope that helps you. Thanks for watching and ride safe.
Love your 5 vids covering the inner and outer primary removal and replacement .I was wondering what year was that bike .? I will shortly be doing similar with my 99 fxd dyna as I have a slight oil leak behind the inner primary somewhere ,it looked like a leaky outer primary gasket but now I don't think it is cos I can see the oil has been tracking down from behind the inner case.i think it's the gear shift shaft oil seal from what I can see ? But will also going to replace everything you did whilst I'm in there .is there anything what differs much on the 99 I need to take note of or is all very similar .thanks. this is my first harley after years of owning and working on metric bikes .I'm very capable with the spanners .but your vids are so helpful and thankyou for sharing all your years of knowledge with Harley's.
Very glad you enjoy and find the videos helpful. That's why I make them. I know you're a mechanic by your last comments. The bike I was working on in that video was a 2001 or 2002 if memory serves. The inner primaries on the 99 to 06 are very similar. If I remember correctly the 99 is the same as the one I was working on but I would have to check a 99 service manual to be sure. If you believe it's the oil seals on the main shaft for the trans, remember there are 3 seals. The main seal, quad seal and the one everyone misses is the 5th gear seal. If it's the seal in the primary for the main shaft install that one dry. If you oil the seals outer side they have a tendency to walk out after awhile and the leak comes back. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching. Ride safe.
can you pls tell me the part # on the housing cover gasket (not oring) . i believe you said its made by James. rather using the o ring, you use this gasket and you apply this white lithium grease on it. tnx.
That gasket can be year specific. You can easily find it online at J&P cycles, Dennis Kirk or any of the aftermarket parts distributors. Thanks for watching.
Great video, sir. Thank you for your efforts. Btw, I have noticed that you didn't put any lube on seal before you slide it over the shaft...Or is it not recommended? Just wanna learn how to do it right way. Thanks again.
Glad you liked it. The new seal and bearing were lube in the previous video. The whole reassembly was done at one time. So I video the reassembly in segments. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the question, the answer is yes you can, Put a light coat on the rubber gasket, o-ring or seal. it will help hold it in place and also keep it from twisting. Thanks for watching.
I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I live in Northern Arizona now, and we do get snow but it's minimal. Nothing like what you get in Canada. My name is Tinker, nickname that was given to as a kid and it's stuck all these years. Thanks for watching.
Like how you explain everything slowly and clearly. Thank you Teacher..
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching
Best series I’ve seen , gonna start airing that white grease trick from now on
Glad you liked the videos. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Yep it will work on a 02. I use James Gaskets. Try JP or Dennis Kirk. If you can't find it there I believe James Gaskets has its own website.
@@tinkeringwithharleys ok I’ll look into thanks again
@@tinkeringwithharleys
So I’ve looked on James site found this part #
JGI-11125-XMF - Kit
Could this be the one for a 2002 FXDL
It seems the "old guy" trick contributed well for the "nicks & dents" on the mating surfaces as lithium grease reacts with aluminium
Yes it works great always has. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Thanks SO MUCH for this series! Looks like I'm about to face the same situation on my old Evo. This helps so much!
Glad you liked the video and it helps you out. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching
Old Harley Dudes R.O.C.K.! TY Sir! Salute!
Old Harley guys come from a different time and have a lot of practice. Thanks
Almost there, I'm sure it would run like a dream after this repair, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Duane, the bike is actually done. Runs good, no oil leaks. I'll put the next video up Wednesday or Thursday. How are you doing with your FX?
