The flashback in episode 5 was *after* the previous flashbacks(you know this because Luffy is wearing Shanks’ hat in that flashback), so Garp had come home to find his grandson “corrupted” by a pirate.

"He's just doubling down." Not quite. I have seen so many reactions, and people often miss what Garp is meaning when addresses the recruits. In the past, he was always sending the recruits or someone else after Luffy. Other than giving orders and that one time he lost his temper and tossed a cannonball himself, he was never directly involved in the hunt. What he meant by "the gloves are coming off" was his gloves. He thanked the recruits for their efforts and was stating that he would now act personally instead of making the recruits do it.

Fun fact about the "frog in a well" comment - in many Asian cultures it's a saying that refers to someone with a limited perspective or a narrow understanding of things. The imagery used is of a frog at the bottom of a well that looking up basically has tunnel vision, because the limited space of the well is all it knows and therefore it believes that the well is the entire world, ignoring the fact that the actual world is a whole lot bigger and complex outside of the narrow confines of the well. Mihawk was directly criticising Zoro for having the limited perspective of a youngster who thought he knew everything there was to know about the world and thus aiming way above his knowledge and experience, challenging someone out of his league. Nice catch on the parallel between Mihawk saying that and Zoro being at the bottom of a well and getting out in the previous episode, tho. Not many notice it on first watch.

It's also due to something that isn't quite as directly explained in the Live Action version. The East Blue is basically the kiddie pool of the One Piece world, where the absolute weakest pirates, marines, and sea beasts tend to hang out. There are exceptions of course, as Roger was from there, and of course the Straw Hats themselves, but for the most part, anyone who only knows the East Blue is going to be completely blindsided by how powerful Marines, pirates, etc. tend to get everywhere else, especially the Grand Line.
It’s always an interesting conversation about Garp and his motivations. Pirates are legit criminals, even though they run the gamut from “people who are ignoring laws” to “destroying towns, pillaging and killing people.” Even if we know Luffy is a great guy, he’s liable to be arrested, get into potentially lethal fights, etc etc. freedom is not safety. Granted, joining the Marines isn’t necessarily safety either….

I never really picked up on the parallels with Luffy and Sanji regarding their mentors losing a limb to save them. Fun fact, in the anime adaptation Zeff lost his leg in the chaos of the ship sinking and saving Sanji, and simply ate nothing the entire time. A lot of people were surprised the live action kept in Zeff eating his own foot. 20:35 So, One Piece IS a fantasy world with a variety of races and some of the themes Arlong brings up are explored more later on....that said it's also a cartoony world where sometimes people just look weird and it can be hard to tell if they're human or not. Merry's never really been confirmed to be human or something else, so it could go either way!
So here are some things you should know about fishmen. - They are an entirely separate species. They’re not Devil Fruit users (especially when eating one would be more of a hindrance to them). - Along with lungs, they also have gills that allow them to breathe underwater. - They are the fastest species in the world of One Piece in swimming. - Their bodies are so thick that they are basically bulletproof, & this comes from them adapting to survive in crush depth. - There is a lot of animosity between humans & fishmen, as many humans treat them like second-class citizens or as disgusting monsters.
They don't say it in the show, but Sanji will ONLY fight using his legs and Kicks. He will never use his hands to fight or even block. He will block attacks with his leg, cuz in the manga he says. "My hands r ONLY used for cooking." It's a lesson Zeff taught Sanji during the years at the Baratie. "A cooks' most important tools are his hands, and u must protect them at all cost." So when Sanji fights, u will notice that he will have his hands in his pockets
@@bcool9272I'm sure they will make 10 or possibly even 12 episodes for the alabasta saga. But for jaya+skypea 8 episodes might even be too much, lol. Maybe they could fit g8 as well 😂 imagine

You're extremely observant caching little details I see everybody miss like Luffy does remember things like names or at least he tries only if he respects you enough also the well metaphor I mean bravo... Plus you're gorgeous 😊
"So was I" 20:45 Could be a jab on the fact that Arlong is canonically 8'8. Oda(creator) made ridiculous and disproportion characters because he has the freedom to do whatever he wants and label it normal on the one piece world. The human race in one piece can range anywhere from 5 feet to almost 30 feet tall. You can have characters with thick neck, body like a bowling ball with small limbs with barely noticeable joints. Ussopp literally has a long nose.
Without spoilers Garp is responsible for Luffy but he is away for work at the marine headquarter so he let Luffy in his hometown under the care of a couple people (the bar owner Makino and the mayor who do not appear in the LA). So Luffy is kinda by himself but he was his necessities covered. He even say he is not an urchin in the first episode. Note that Garp normally only comes around during his vacations so he and Shanks did not meet in the village during the time Shanks was there (little less than a year and travelling around). The ep 5 flashback is after Shanks left since Luffy already have the hat
@@catchingupkate No problem, I really love Garp and his struggle between morals and duty. I cant go in detail but take note on his talk with Koby on ep 5, when he said "i could be fleet admiral but I refused the promotion, because I would lose my freedom" is a damn important line about his character as a whole
Actually, I do believe one of Luffy’s family members is confirmed since that character’s Japanese voice actor revealed he will lend his voice for Season 2.
You're really quick with guesses. Like with the fish skin. Sometimes it almost seems like you've already watched it or something 🤔Or maybe you're quick-witted. Or clairvoyant 🤔
I read a lot which helps with comprehension :). I read the book Cod by Mark Kurlansky and I also work in healthcare. Cod (and tilapia) is a fish that is used to treat wounds, specifically burns. When Zeff said he was going to help and asked for a fish it made more sense to me that he would use it to treat a wound than to cook 🤷🏻♀️
I think you're misunderstanding something about the Warlords. The Marines don't choose to work with the Warlords or pick who they are. The world government picks them and tells them what to do.

A few things. 1 the side story of garp and Colby is just added in for the live action. We don't even meet garp until much later in the anime. 2. The story that Nami reads to zoro will be important to a later ark in the anime 3. The live action cover a 45 episode of the anime. That is a little over 5.5 to 1 ratio (5.63 tbe) 4. Buggy doesn't play any part of these episodes in the anime. In fact, he doesn't appear till episode 46 or 47 of the anime 5. In the anime, Luffy originally does battle with the pirate captain that MiHawk defeats in the last episode 6. Arlong will be the main badguy for the remaining 2 episodes of the series. 7. Zoro and Sanji become the best of frenimies from here on out 8. You asked about luffys parent. We never learn about his mother, but we do eventually learn all about hus father. In fact I suspect we will meet him in tge opening episodes of season 2. 9. Garp left luffy on tge Island to toughen him up, and has a tendency of throwing him into dangerous situations whenever he visits. That's all I have for now

@@catchingupkate omg yesss i would be totally up for it if you're ready to open up a YT membership or a Patreon! But no pressure though! I've been following your channel eversince you first upload TLOU reactions here and seriously, I could listen to you talk for hours! 😅
That means so much thank you 🥹🥹🥹 I wasn’t sure if I was coming back after my hiatus but everyone has been so kind I can’t get over it
FIRST NAMI, THEN THE GRAND LINEEEEE
I lost Nami. I lost the map. 😭 That killed me!
16:52 Remember this book.
I'm subbed and waiting for the rest of the episodes and the manga reviews 💖
Thank you!! 🥹
The flashback scene with Garp and Luffy, Luffy had the straw hat already so he had already met Shanks.
I kinda like that they told the original story. Because if he didn't eat anything I would be convinced he had magic powers 😂
This backstory😭😭😭
His screaming at the boat as it sailed away 😭
Great reaction! cant wait for the next two!
Thank you! Both should hopefully be up this weekend 🤞🏻
Uhm didnt Jack of the Beast-Pirates eat a devilfruit? Also Vander Dekken! There are Fishmen with Devil Fruits.
Gotcha, thank you!
11:13 “How did he do that so quickly?”
You ask this, after seeing how fast Kuro was? What, you think Kuro’s speed is unique in this series?
omg you get it so much it's crazy
Thank you! I love the story so much 🥹
the anime didnt have Zeff eat his leg, it was in the manga though. I was never so happy to see a grown man eat his own leg before but here we are.
😂 I mean.... in context.....
Is that an LA Knight tshirt? YEAH
YEAH 😎. My friend works for WWE and said he's super nice and humble in real life :)
I'm looking forward to manga arc reviews, you get the characters so well, I'm curious what you'll think of our future crew!
Thank you, I'm excited to start 😬 Trying to finish up all my half read books this weekend so I can fully focus!
"He miss out some stuff" I love how they keep our good old not-knowing-anything-but-I'm-in Zoro in this live action XD
Me too, he just goes along with it 😂
They don't say it in the show, but Sanji will ONLY fight using his legs and Kicks.
Thank you! I love that little detail. I'm not sure if he was inspired, but there is a wrestler on AEW who fights with his hands in his pockets 😂
The story book read by Nami is the main theme of season 3.😂
No need to spoil and just by doing 8 episodes a season, I'm not sure if they reach it by then .
@@bcool9272I'm sure they will make 10 or possibly even 12 episodes for the alabasta saga. But for jaya+skypea 8 episodes might even be too much, lol. Maybe they could fit g8 as well 😂 imagine
@@bcool9272 True, I think it will be Season 4, S3 probably is the end of Alabasta and maybe before Skypea
@@rakhatthenut3815 they've already announced 8 episodes for the second season.
@@finanightmare1993 either that or the end of Jaya
there is some strong badass pirates in the universe of OP. But eating your own leg to save the child is the most badass thing i ever heard!
I agree!
If you really want to see the chemistry between the actors I’d recommend watching some recordings from panels at cons. They are hilarious! I’d recommend watching the one from Weebcon 2024 with Jacob Romero (Usopp), Emily Rudd (Nami), Taz Skylar (Sanji) and Steven John Ward (Mihawk).
Will do! I don't want the series to end, but I'm excited to be able to watch some behind the scenes and cast interviews!
Yes, just yes
You're extremely observant caching little details I see everybody miss like Luffy does remember things like names or at least he tries only if he respects you enough also the well metaphor I mean bravo... Plus you're gorgeous 😊
Aww thank you 🥹
"So was I" 20:45
Could be a jab on the fact that Arlong is canonically 8'8.
I can't wait to read the manga, I'm hopefully starting this weekend/week!
Actually, the mayor (Woop Slap) does appear in a “blink & you’ll miss it” cameo.
Thank you!
@@catchingupkate No problem, I really love Garp and his struggle between morals and duty.
I cant go in detail but take note on his talk with Koby on ep 5, when he said "i could be fleet admiral but I refused the promotion, because I would lose my freedom" is a damn important line about his character as a whole
love the video, you should definitely read the Manga 👍
Thank you! I will be!
New sub here. Welcome to one piece adventure. Ull cry, laugh, hate, love and many more. Good luck.
Hi, thank you! I'm very excited to start the manga!
Next episode is my favorite. This episode was also great!
I don't want it to end 😭
@@catchingupkate Dont worry. You have the amazing Manga!
16:51 well we'll see about that...
any job sea related means that family member could take months or years before you seeing them. Don't feel that way in the show thought ^^
So many references you are going love in the manga....Prepare yourself.
I don't want the show to end, but I'm so excited to start the manga 🥹
I told you before you were drop your tears after a few episodes
"Dont waste food and eat food if your hungry " dont hurt a lady "sanji respected word
I love Zeff! 😭
Mont Blanc Noland!!!
13:30 Thank you for not asking how you can get to higher elevation during tide, because 9 out of 10 reactors couldn't figure that out.
I live along the shoreline so I'm familiar 😂
Luffy's family is...complicated. I don't want to say any more than that since I am not sure how the live-action will adapt some things in Season 2.
Actually, I do believe one of Luffy’s family members is confirmed since that character’s Japanese voice actor revealed he will lend his voice for Season 2.
16:52 uh-huh…
You're really quick with guesses. Like with the fish skin. Sometimes it almost seems like you've already watched it or something 🤔Or maybe you're quick-witted. Or clairvoyant 🤔
I read a lot which helps with comprehension :). I read the book Cod by Mark Kurlansky and I also work in healthcare. Cod (and tilapia) is a fish that is used to treat wounds, specifically burns. When Zeff said he was going to help and asked for a fish it made more sense to me that he would use it to treat a wound than to cook 🤷🏻♀️
I really wish u will watch the anime episodes they're great
Sorry :(. I will be reading the manga though and I'll be incorporating watching certain scenes. I'll also be watching the new anime when it comes out!
I think you're misunderstanding something about the Warlords. The Marines don't choose to work with the Warlords or pick who they are. The world government picks them and tells them what to do.
What is that T-Shirt? ☺️
LA Knight! My friend works for WWE and they said he is a super stand up nice guy in real life :)
@@catchingupkate yes is thought it was WWF at first looks cool that’s Awesome 🙏🏼
Merry is a human not a sheep person
Although there is a theory that he is part sheep person
@@Phanthief95 stupid theory
He is just a sheep themed human
We see a lot of people who look like animals in one piece it doesn't mean that they hybrid race without any spoilers
@@Maxpain350 Did you forget we have fishmen in this series? They’re even in this episode.
Also, you haven’t made it to Zou, have you?
@@Phanthief95 look I know everything but I don't want to spoil
But there is a lot of animal themed humans in the anime
We saw what hybrid race with humans look like, that specific race you talk about live in the grand line
Even fishmen mostly live in the grand line, arlong himself is from the grandline
16:51 😉
18:03 that's the problem with this live action, Garp is someone who don't do that, but they make him like another corrupt marine.
A few things. 1 the side story of garp and Colby is just added in for the live action. We don't even meet garp until much later in the anime.
2. The story that Nami reads to zoro will be important to a later ark in the anime
3. The live action cover a 45 episode of the anime. That is a little over 5.5 to 1 ratio (5.63 tbe)
4. Buggy doesn't play any part of these episodes in the anime. In fact, he doesn't appear till episode 46 or 47 of the anime
5. In the anime, Luffy originally does battle with the pirate captain that MiHawk defeats in the last episode
6. Arlong will be the main badguy for the remaining 2 episodes of the series.
7. Zoro and Sanji become the best of frenimies from here on out
