I wish they had kept the "put your life on the line" line in the the live action. It feels integral to Shanks world view: if you're going to act, follow through.

Yeah I love every art style of One Piece and especially the older style. They always kept up with the trends of animation and its fun to see it progress as you watch! And its also cool to see Oda evolve as an artist as you read.

The One Piece anime is a fairly solid adaptation; the voice cast in stellar, the music is great and they more or less keep the charm of the original manga. The only real downside is how the pacing drags as they get closer to the manga and have to fill time with anime-only content of dubious quality, but you're several hundred episodes from where that gets really bad. One Piece is really one of the last anime hold outs before more shows finally started taking production breaks and doing seasons. 15:48....Shanks' bounty huh? 👀

It *is* a classic anime OP tho. Although-you might start to notice this a bit with anime, but some people consider anime OPs to be a bit spoilery. Why? Well, if you were a new watcher…could you guess who the next five people to join the crew are? lol. Also kinda telling there’s no Koby in the OP. I’m pretty used to it, myself, but I’m also someone who watches movie trailers and doesn’t pick up on “obvious edits” and such. There’s a few times when something big happens and this first OP shows up again, so the nostalgia is always there.

The Avatar has the unique challenge of mastering all elements-including those they may not have the temperament for. You might get 4x as much power but you need 4x as much training, to some extent. But it does give Aang opportunities to seek out different cultures and belief systems as he seeks teachers.

I love how once Zoro gets over the initial shock of how early Luffy is in putting his crew together, he immediately adjusts to “my new captain is crazy and I’m here for it.” Also, since you commented on finding the colors and the sky pretty, there’s an interesting bit of historic context to that. In the late 90s when One Piece began (the anime started in 1999), most animation was drawn and colored by hand, known as “cel animation”, which tended to have crisper colors with little bits of flair and charming imperfection making some of the colors pop. These days cel animation is rare but you occasionally see it done as a deliberate throwback (the movie Redline is probably the best-known example). Then in the very early 2000s, very early in the show’s run, the industry shifted to what’s colloquially known as “digipaint” animation, and while a lot of artists have figured out how to do very cool things with this tool, during its early days a lot of anime of that era suffered from flat colors as the industry went through some growing pains. So if you notice a sudden change in the show’s coloration after a few dozen episodes, that’s why. It doesn’t look bad and the animators adapt very quickly, but the specific time in which the show began its run make the early episodes a neat little relic of that transition.

Oh these two episodes sure put Aang through it. He's our hero, but he's a kid who can still make mistakes. Something interesting with Jeong-Jeong, you might notice his movements are a lot more like a waterbender than a firebender. Looks like his envy for waterbending rubbed off on his style; it's really interesting to see a more defensive fighting style when most firebenders we've seen are so aggressive. Glad you're back at it with this series; we're nearing the end of season one so I'm excited to see how you'll react!

Finally back with Avatar! 7:59 sad that you cut off my favorite line in this episode. 14:58 wanted poster of the blue spirit (Zuko in a mask) is also present there. 19:26 biblical imagery with the burning tree. 25:39 Jeong Jeong is scared and disgusted of his own powers, so he might not have been the best teacher, but he still gave us a lot of insight into the way it works. Aang was not yet ready for it.

the translation you'll see in the anime is a lot more accurate to oda's authentic dialogue than the early localized manga until around the current arc you're at there where it starts being more authentic to the original...if my sentence structure made sense, yikes. im a bit tired & it's the end of my birthday, so.

noooo but Zoro eating the filthy onigiri in his introduction always gets me as a stand alone but even more so when I think of the parallel of Sanji beating up a customer for ruining food in his own introduction.

Welcome to the anime watchers club (with a little delay). Well done noticing the anime to manga difference. The way Nami is introduced is, the biggest anime to manga difference (in the first episodes at least). The old style animation is nostalgic to me too. Reminds me of DBZ design when it comes to facial expressions. Hope you will enjoy it as much as you enjoyed the manga.

This show really does keep you on your toes, not knowing if anyone is gonna make it in any kind of scene. They really do showcase how brutal the titans can be...and now here's one that can THINK. Things really do start to kick into high gear around now, so excited to see your reactions to come!

I’m mostly just commenting because I love your journey through One Piece but I love at the beginning of the episode when they show the crowd at Roger’s execution they give a distinct nod to my favorite One Piece theory by how they represent Crocodile. For anyone that doesn’t know, Crocodile was canonically at Roger’s execution and he is standing right in front of Shanks in this episode. I’m very confident that nobody who isn’t familiar with the theory will never be able to figure this comment out and therefore it inherently can’t be a spoiler. Love both of your channels! For all the faults I think the anime has with pacing later on, the early days of One Piece are really solid. And the more recent episodes really up the production quality with the animation. The soundtrack and acting are also really on point, so it's still a good way to get into the series. Makes me curious how the anime remake will go. If nothing else there's plenty of options to get into the series! I'll echo with a few others have said; probably best to use an overlay or something so Toei doesn't get cranky. A few other One Piece reactions I see do something similar but then also have the uncensored videos on Patreon as an incentive to join. Looking forward to more!

I think your editing was great, but Toei notoriously had have problems with TH-cam and streaming the anime. may I reccomend a light overlay/water mark over the anime window. I'm just worried about unjustified strikes against you 🙏

Hi Kate. Good to see you back again :) I always appreciated your detailed review of the last episode and your way of analysing. If you think about the intro, we saw the fly whilst hearing Skyler singing the lullaby on the baby monitor. That's the moment Walt wishes that he'd lived up until and no longer. He is haunted by what's happened since then but feels unable to change it. Since then: he let Jane die, there was the plane crash, Skyler found out, had an affair and tried to divorce him, Jane's dad tried to kill himself, the twins shot Hank, and Gus has pressed him in to an open-ended contract & demonstrated that he's not someone to be messed with. That, to me, is what the fly embodies. We saw at the beginning of this episode, before he started to figure out about the skimming, that he was struggling to sleep & I think that + the skimming meant the fly sort of tipped him over the edge into obsession. Walt knows that he spoke with a man at a bar who told him to not give up on family. Taking this man's advice, he, considering Jesse family, goes back and allows the daughter of the man to whom he spoke to die. Walt knows that connection. I can't imagine what that would do to someone's psyche. I really hope you are enjoying the show and are able to finish it. Would you be interested in watching Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff after? I think you may enjoy it even more. It's such a well written show. :)
