Not that what Zeff said didn't affect him, arguably it may what have rekindled and reinforced the kindness that has always been there.

Zoro is understanding there is something about this little goofball, he knows something the rest of us don't, and he's worth following.

IMO, The matter with zoro's vow, I think it was to show how when zoro's wants to achieve his dream by defeating Mihawk, Luffy's is supporting him (by not preventing him) even though there's a chance that he won't win, that's why when he wake up, he want to support Luffy's dream in return, hence the vow (and never lose again means defeating mihawk if they happened to meet again).
