  • Hey house lovers and explorers! This video is one I enjoyed very much as this home was far more than what the front view indicated.
The home is actually over 100 years old and as you will see once inside the layers of history start to be recalled.
The area of Findon in Adelaide was always known for it`s gardening and farming form yesteryear and this dwelling and parcel of land has been a true survivor up until the last few years.
Even the old original shed has a unique original purpose and I add some history of the property toward the end of the video. Hope you all enjoy, cheers for watching :-)

The end makes me so sad. All the laughter, tears, arguments, kisses, hugs and stories the walls held so tightly are now just sitting in a pile of rubble. I need a tissue……😢😢

A salute to some of the original immigrants to South Australia who did it tough and survived on their entrepreneurial skills of market gardening no doubt learnt well in countries such as Italy and Greece.

That was an amazing Video, I used to Live near Bridgeman Road for a while and the land next to that used to be a potato farm (a friend of mine used to sneak in and steal the potatoes). i once made the mistake of trying to short cut my way home from work through the dirt in my heels, only to find it was only to find my feet would sink shin deep into the soil. It took me ages, by the time i realized the soil wasn't getting any easier to walk through i was half way to where i needed to be.... i think it took me an hour to walk across and ruined my shoes in the meantime. I do remember vaguely and this bought back so many memories.

    • @urbexindigo5164
      @urbexindigo5164  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hi Heather :-) Yes the Tripodi`s were also potato market gardeners to this area which was Giuseppina`s former family name. The home prob had cows originally too as this area along Findon road was dairy farming too. So cool to uncover all this along the way. Haha. trudging through the fields in heels would not be a short cut in the end I guess lol :-)

I absolutely hate that we are loosing our historic homes to these greedy developers and they put up those monstrosities they call villas. Its so very sad that this is happening to towns all over Australia. Thankyou for taking us down the memory of a glorious home that had stood the test of time, much appreciated to you for documenting them before they are destroyed.

Yes, this area had large market gardens in the day. So sad that all that rich alluvial soil is now lost forever under cheap little boxes. I went to Underdale High, (not far away), which used to have a huge celery farm on its' boundary. The gorgeous smell of celery used to whaft across the oval....thx for taking the time to delve into the history once again 😁

Hi Paul, it was very close to my heart seeing this story.
My Dad bought a 1969 Chrysler valiant three years old in 1972 from Portside Chrysler down the road and the original owner was listed in the owners book was an Arnold Richardson of this address.
About six or seven years ago, my son and I decided to knock on the door and see if we could find the original owner listed as Arnold Richardson, his brother, Eric answered and said that his brother passed away in the 80s, he didn’t recall much about the car I bought, but did mention his brother and himself bought new Valiants every 3 years or so.
We turned up on that day with that car to show them but mentioned he had poor eye sight to be able see it properly, and probably wouldn’t have remembered his brothers car from 1972.
It was great to learn about this history of the property and the family.
We still have the car in the family now.
    Thanks
    Martin

It's really lovely Paul how you piece together the jig-saw and story - it's beautiful. Got to love 'Google Earth' & how you found a 2009 photo of Eric - the owner on his old tractor mowing the lawn - that is priceless & then tracing the generation of owners from finding the wooden cross of Giuseppina & tracing her heritage to the home♥love that so much. I imagine Eric spent a lot of time in the garage & re-vamping that old radio (I know you can't take mementos from a property but what a shame if that got turned to dust too). I loved the fact that he must have loved 'potato chips' & collecting chip memorablia - & I wonder who's hat that was. I noticed a space ship type machine thingey on top of one of the old wardrobes - was that an old vacuum cleaner? Seems a little divine intervention crossed your path running into one of the old neighbours who knew Eric - Wow! Amazing! No matter how ordinary a life may seem each of our stories is precious - it's lovely you could tell a little of this home's story (as you do) and a snippet of people who once called it home. Thank you for sharing the wonder - though again turning homes to dust is so sad 🧡

Giuseppina's grave marker in the shed was a temporary, likely never used because finances allowed for the permanent at the start.

I think that last little room with all the shelves was, indeed, a pantry. Farm wives, when the original owners of the land farmed there, would have canned large amounts of produce from their farm. Not only for the family but to feed their farmhands, as well. I remember how much space my mother’s home-made canned goods required for storage and we were not farmers. (My mom just liked feeding our family of five farm-fresh foods.) Whatever leftover produce there was would have been preserved, rather than wasted. They may have also made extra to sell.

Wonderful touch, the history. My 1945 home has one archway, perhaps a throwback? It was completed before the end of the war. It's sad to see what's happening in Adelaide (probably everywhere). But I know for certain if I sell my house or die, it'll be razed and some new monstrosity will grow, but not units, single family homes only here. It's happening in my area and it's the oldest homeowners association in the city. Watching you go thru houses is like watching my future. TFS 💖💔🏏🎸

This house is a beauty and they have to demolish it to put up those ugly apartment
houses. They really are ugly cold looking buildings. The Richardson family took
good care of this house. There must have been some old folks living in this house
at some point judging by all the grab bars I saw in the house. I love that spacious
kitchen. Nice work Paul. By the way how is the new cat Tux doing? Stay safe and
    well out there.🐈

It would have made those boxes more ugly than they are….why cant they move these houses, sell them to someone who would move it to a better spot.

Eclectic layers and features all coexisting together ! What vintage were the ceiling lights that looked like flames ? Very interesting 👍

What a lovely, quirky, serviceable home!!! It does look renovated, but gives a 1950s feel to it. I love the woodwork. Thirtys to fifties? Again, so sad to see kne so nice hit the dust. A waste.

Very fascinating to also see cross cultural marriages especially back in the 1950's when Italians would have been very new to Australia...

The back end you said was a kitchen, I believe it was used as a pantry. I noticed a lock on the door, they may have made their own liquor. Preserves, sauces etc

I'm surprised that land that large was still there even 40 years ago. This area is hardly the outskirts of the city where the suburbs encroached on it...this was already built up 50 years or more ago.

I can’t see having a toilet in a different area of the house! That’s rough if you have are in the shower/ tub and have to go to the loo! Just an observation.
I think that small room in the garage was used for an office.

I honestly don't see anything really wrong with it. I love hearing the history of the homes.
I hate seeing those ugly square boxes go up..

Greed and ignorance wins the day again - Australia has so little history, surely they'd try to preserve what little they can find - the "new" landscape sure paints a bleak picture. The old part of this property could've been salvaged and a small parcel of land around it could have been saved to leave some character for the new and future residents to enjoy, it's been done before, a park could be designed around it, have it as a feature in a featureless, bleak, soulless part of town. Just a few thoughts as I watch your video, thanks again Paul.
PS: speaking of bodies being found, our old next door neighbours in Sydney dug up a child's grave when they were installing an in-ground pool - cement coffin.

That house is/was just down the street from me. my great grandparents / grandparents had a farm shown up the top of the aerial photo and was subdivided around the mid 50's i think.
Where can i find a copy of that aerial photo?

The little stone room may have been a milk room if the original farm had a cow like many did.
