Cottage loaded with history/Same family for 112 years/I find lots of cool old things

- Hey house lovers and explorers! Today I take you through an old historic cottage "Tarawera" that was situated down in the Port Adelaide districts and was in the same family for 112 years.
Sadly the home is gone now but I was able to uncover a lot of history and add it to the video. I was also able to find cool old items as well that lead me to some very interesting and enjoyable research.

These homes were the best ever built, don't know why people don't like living in this style anymore... TONS better than these modern, some weird homes they build today.. I hope someone saves that bathtub, that is a real GEM.. thanks for the awesome tour ❤
A home like this on a 5 acre block and I would be the absolute happiest little chook! Would have veggie patches and flower gardens with the chicken coop to match that cottage vibe.
I really enjoyed the historical information you gave on this home and family. Such a legacy, lost to "progress." I was moved by your words and pictures at the end, and was a bit teary to see that empty lot. Thank you for documenting these beautiful places for posterity.

Just came across this about butterflies.(In spirituality, butterflies often represent change, transformation, hope, and your inner self. A loved one, angel, or spirit guide may be trying to send you a message of hope or peace if a butterfly lands on you. Butterflies could gravitate to you if you have a kind, compassionate, and/or imaginative spirit) .very fitting to your video maybe an old owner coming through. Change and transform could be the new home being built. Great video

It was meant to be documented this way, as you found some real left behind hidden pieces of the lives of the the family that lived there. Had the home been intact, those little bonus pieces of history would have been lost forever. So not a sad story, really.

This is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable explores thanks Paul, where you captured the last of an old Adelaide suburban home, filled with many discarded treasures. Each item that you rescued from demolition, depicts a story of days gone by. From the spinning toy, match boxes, post cards, letter to the 1917 Florin Coin, were all equality brilliant finds. 😊

Such a shame to see an old girl like this being destroyed. Reminds me of the house we lived in at Edensor Park, right in the middle of the new housing estate that was being erected around us just before we emigrated to Scotland in the late 80's. It was a treasure trove of early 1900's ingenuity, including the old outside pit dunny! Especially the sheds around the place where the Italian landlord used to come over every weekend and bake bread in the old stone oven that we would sit and watch for hours and they would break a loaf and drizzle it with olive oil and give it me and my 3 siblings. What a time to be alive!
This is by far one of your best videos mate. The level of study and in depth history you provide is sensational! Please never stop what you are doing. Even though you are in a different state, the history is the same. Respect bro!!!

The research on the history of this little home was great. Then the old girl rewarded you with some great treasures. Kids may have tech today but my kids have always enjoyed basics like spinning tops and marbles, the ol classics are the best.
Very interesting history. You can hear the- 'what will you think' birds outside.

This house is like our Villas in New Zealand except our ones were left with weatherboard and not rendered. Corrugated roofs of course and sometimes sides. Tall ceilings which are a bloody nuisance to clean especially in the kitchen. Such a damn shame this one had to go. Obviously the Master Mariner had been to NZ if he called the house "Tarawera".

The envelopes you found were actually old telegram envelopes by the looks of them. All this stuff would have just been tossed away during the demolition, great work Paul in saving this stuff. Btw good work re the butterfly 😊 and one of the best explores

I'm in danger of becoming a serial pest...I posted my earlier comment B4 I finished watching this vid. I'm pretty sure those pressed iron homes were the "original" kit homes, shipped out from the UK or USA & assembled on site. Good on you for releasing the Painted Lady butterfly. I'm a massive fan of Karma...I wonder if the owners of those toys went to my old Alma Mater, Port Primary. It was a tough school back in the day, & I always aspired to be a wharfie as well...I went to the 1952 Great Exhibition advertised in that paper. They had a captured German V2 rocket, painted black & white, on display. Plus an exhibition of television, which enthralled this young Beach Bum. Great collecting, mate: hang onto that two bob bit.!!!
You are right about the house being a kit home from the UK, This suburb and many suburbs nearby have these houses as the majority so they are not really in danger of disappearing at all. It's really only the odd every 15th or 20th house that gets demolished for a modern build or multiple higher density build for many families.
My suburb is two suburbs away and has probably 95% brick and stone construction but the next suburb over between the one on the video and mine was a "poorer" area in the old days so had tin kit houses as majority.
Even though this channel seems doom and gloom for old builds, Adelaide has many thousands of these old houses. The real losses are the "richer" peoples old houses that sat in prominent positions on major crossroads (back then the traffic was horse and carriage) where they could see and be part of the excitement of city life. These days those ornate and well built houses are all at danger because no-one like car noise and traffic so the "rich" people end up leaving and the house becomes derelict or is at danger to roadworks to cope with traffic.
Hi Beach Bum :-) Sears and Roebuck did those kit houses hey? The style from them were actually quite good but Steven`s comments below are spot on. The big beautiful homes around Adelaide by master builders are the big losses. But every house has a history and story. Cheers for recalling your memories of those years and events. Amazing :-)

On ya, Paul! A lot of memories here! I spent my "formative" years in Port Adelaide & use to swim in the old Port Canal which had ketches like the "Active" moored along the wharves on both sides. We'd dive off the rope ladders attached to the masts, into the canal which wasn't all that deep... Ketches were used to take cargoes to & from Gulf, Bight & Kangaroo Island ports. Absolutely vital for many of those remote towns back in the day before surfaced roads & reliable wheeled transport. Great job by you!!! Thanks, mate!!! 👍👍👍

I think you got there at the right time with your treasure find...the early photos told the story how it was...I think the other two tops were an end spindle on furniture and a plumb bob possibly from when the house was made! Cheers Paul.

Hi Dan. Yeah I collect even old rusty things from Op and antique shops too. But the things like in this video are my favourite because they would have been lost forever. I can only imagine all the old things in old houses that were never rediscovered and went to landfill. 👍

Hi! I am new to the channel, and from the USA! The Card that says Christmastide is pronounced Christmas - tide, just spoken as 1 word. which is a way older generations would say Christmas Wishes or Christmas Season. Kind of like Yuletide, the word Christmastide was used the same way.

What an absolute treasure trove! It’s heartbreaking to see these old homes being destroyed and dismantled! I’m so glad you found all those little items, which are items of history of a family and their everyday lives! I’m glad the owners salvaged the flooring, but I would think those old doors would be valuable as well! Go figure! Really enjoyed your historical research and information into these families and their lives. Absolutely fantastic explore and thank you so much for sharing the history on this lovely old home and the family that lived in it. Some great finds under the floor too. The two bob would be worth a bit. 1917. Wow! The old letter was very interesting. Written a year before my grandparents were born. I just love history.

I have never seen pressed tin mock ashlar stonework before! It's generally wooden panels. Absolutely fascinating and it breaks my heart that someone could just want to tear it down. Thanks so much for documenting all these houses and history!

This video was the best Ive seen, so much work has gone into the research which help paint the picture of this family, a family whose legacy was so significant it was immortalised in a boat museum...surely there family home deserved the same fate of restoration rather than demolition.... I'm glad you finally got there to made a historical record and find those amazing treasures...sad the ceiling rose which are hand made by a master plaster trained specifically are being demolished along with the pressed tin ceiling another hand crafted item....

Thank You Mr Indigo, this one is a sad demolish indeed, especialy when u see the bones of this little lady are still rather sturdy after decades of the Australian weather. Must have been a bit of an oven in the summer months with all that corrugated iron cladding it.
Loved the archeology, relics of lives lived within those walls certainly do give us an insight on the family who lived within...I too loved the top, but my favourite relic was the bakelite lipstick holder circa 1930s.
Thanks again for documenting and preserving this homes story. I would have maybe added some scraps of wallpaper to those memory boxes.

Im astonished its in such original condition after all these decades, shame about that lost amazing mantle piece, that was a beauty, unexpected fixture in a cottage.
Hood job on the switches...I wonder what the original wood stove in the kitchen looked like.
Thank you I love these old cottages, I’m sad when I see these beautiful old cottages demolished, and modern town houses go up in the place of these beautiful old homes.
I do understand as they are often too costly to restore, although the new town houses today won’t stand the test of time. If only those walls could talk, good seeing the old dunny out the back, that certainly takes me back in time, glad we no longer have to use them. That’s a very big cottage, on a very big block, I grew up in a small cottage in Richmond Victoria. I’m still on the same block, my parents bought the property in 1948 for 4 hundred pounds.
How does a newspaper from 1952 get under the floorboards of a C1900's house 🤷♀️ this is superb 👌 great job: the connecting the dots, history, the letter! The spinning top is gold, and the back story!
Hi 😊 I think someone threw a whole lot of stuff under the floors around the early to mid 50s as the tobacco tins and stuff also are from the 40s and 50s. Rooms in these homes usually have a little trap door to access under the floor. Glad you enjoyed 😊👍

Hi Brett :-) Firstly I am glad you and your wife look forward to watching these videos and yes Essie was the first name I thought and used to search and came up with absolutely nothing so started doubting my translation and tried Annie next. The only other thing I could think it may be is a Mary Whelan who affectionately goes by the name "Essie". But then there are discrepancies with the address detail. I am still digging for more info. Regarding the items getting under the floor I guess because they were in a concentrated area they may have been a square of the rooms floor near the door accessible like a trap door that they literally dumped and swept things in to. :-) Cheers for watching
Cursive. Yes I was taught cursive at school and still write that way and with a fountain pen. An art that seems to be waning.

Sweden has always been the pioneer in matches. "The Swedish Match Company". In the UK there were several companies before the last century but they were never really big manufacturers. "Bryant & May" were about the biggest.
