  • Hey house lovers and explorers!
This episode I will take you through a grand old statesman home from the early 1900`s federation period that was built by a local prominent family already established in the the suburb of Glenelg North which was formerly St Leonards.
Provided is some cool information for those not familiar with Glenelg also another interesting look back to trace the history of the street and how it took shape and who lived here.
By the title you probably already realize this od gem has now recently been demolished and it certainly could have stood for another 100 plus years without a doubt.
With that said come and take the walk through with me and see this old home for yourself.
    Thanks for watching :-)

The drape fabric you pointed out looked like raw silk to me.

I agree, the luster of the fabric of the drapes is beautiful. They have to be silk. Very special. Thank you for another fascinating, albeit sad, visit to a great house.

The sharpness and detail to the stonework is an absolute credit to the mastery and dedication of Mr Laycock.
Despite it having become an overall smaller sized property than when it had all its surrounding land, it is still a family size.
A lovely house with a great layout. Such a shame it is no more. Thank you for the historical background to the Laycock Family, quite a remarkable history indeed.

This beautiful original lime stone Federation home is what made the suburbs of Adelaide unique compared to other cities across Australia. Such a pity that such charming old gems are being demolished for concrete jungle high rise buildings. If only we could save our historic buildings. Again a fantastic explore thanks Urbex Indigo. 🏡

Thank you so much for this house tour...I grew up at 11 Mary Street which parallel to Sturt Street...our home is directly in line with this house...I wondered about the cracking in the walls as we had cracks on our southern side... apparently there are underground streams from the Pat...i also know number 5 Canning street very well.
The little workshop on the right always caught my eye....the skinny room I believe is a cloak room.
I used too sneak down that adjacent laneway to pinch a couple of bottles from the St Leonards inn's weekly order of "Loys" soft drinks.
I watched the building next door being built as I did the Buffalo replica ship.
The Roundhouse was already built when we moved in..1972..it sat vacant for many years before completion.
There's a plaque in Melbourne street where the first house was built in Glenelg...it's near the corner of old Tapleys hill rd on the north side.
Much more I could tell you of course.
So thanks again for bringing up so many memories of my formative years.

Thank you so much for the history- I love things like that, and I'm sure the tenants hated having to leave. The bird was amazing. I so hope they save the tree, and the ones in back as well. Only houses in certain locations are at risk like this one, houses on arterial roads and near intersections or foundation issues.
Keep in mind that 80 to 90% of the suburbs are in tact and still have all the original housing stock.
So it's not as grim as you'd think.

    • @stevenbalekic5683
      @stevenbalekic5683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There does need to be some new developments in the suburbs because our suburbs aren't dense enough for the future.
Adelaide's average house land size is a quarter of an acre...the problem is we have large footprint cities with small population...and to buy a new built house you need to drive a long way away to get to the new areas.
The law changed a while ago to prevent the spread of the suburbs on the fertile farmland surrounding Adelaide and to prevent badly serviced far out suburbs...so high density infill of inner suburb areas was encouraged.
Subdivisions of blocks, highrises on main roads and near transport hubs have become the main goals.
Don't worry too much though...most of the houses in the suburbs like many shown on this channel are still there...85 to 95% of the villas, bungalows and first original houses built are still standing strong...like the guy said it's mainly the houses on main roads and prominent positions that are at risk...when these houses were built many were built in a prominent position to show off or to be near transport back in the day when all roads were still dirt and horse and carriage the main transport.
As time went cars and increased traffic made many of these houses undesirable...a bit different having a few horse and carts going past to thousands of noisy cars flying past all day and night.
Yes it's a shame that some of the finest specimens were built in these areas subject to future demolition due to location...there are still plenty left that will never be at risk because the builders chose sites in nice quiet areas where it will always be safe unless foundation problems get really bad...these areas will either have a new house built by someone who has money and wants a larger block of land or most probably be replaced by higher density town houses to fulfil housing shortages.
But the majority of these houses are still here.

Its been a nice house. Sad its gone. Thanks for posting this video. My grandparents also had a palm tree outside their house. By the time I was a child it had become enormous, and was very messy. Of course it went when their fine federation house was torn down to be replaced by an ugly McMansion type dwelling.

FYI, my uncle was a Glenelg footballer, hall of famer and tiger legend, B Colbey. His Guernsey hung in the foyer at the footy club for years until his work colleagues bought it from the club and presented it to him on his retirement from "the feds".

Hi Jodeofoz :-) That is so cool! I used to have to dust those photos at the club when I was doing cleaning and maintenance back when I was playing there! B Colbey indeed an absolute club legend!!! :-) Thanks for sharing that info. Go the Tig`s :-)

Makes me want to cry. Built at a time when quality took precedence and builders along with land owners cared about design and attention to detail. Each house had it's own personality that stood apart from the rest of the neighborhood. I just don't understand how some damn developer can rape society of an important part of the areas history. It's an absolute travesty that local government needs to address. I live in the United States where this goes on all the time. I thought the importance of saving historical monuments and places was taken more serious over seas. I didn't expect to see this happen in Australia. What a shame. Thank you for sharing this with the world as we all need to be enlightened by what is happening around the world today.

What a beautiful home! What a pity! And the poor parrot lost its home too. That was a great catch finding the parrot in the tree. That too was a sad reminder of how all the species are affected by one another. Demolish our human homes and they often lose theirs too.

I grew up in Santa Monica California and an old friend of mine and I used to go exploring in condemned houses on her street. The ended up building condos in their place.

It makes me so mad that houses like this are being demolished whilst to high rise is still standing!!! Something needs to be done to protect such heritage...why wasn't this house heritage listed?!

    • @urbexindigo5164

Do they salvage the ornate ceilings, crown molding, and wood designs like in hallways? That 80s built monstrosity is an eyesore, even from a skyline perspective...U...G...L...Y. Very good video. The homes set for demolition are better than my current place.

Hi Paul, I feel very sad that this old beauty is no more, almost as sad as I felt when the Tigers were defeated! My old stomping ground, used to party at the Bay Disco, now I clean the Bay Discovery Centre, so I know lots about the history of Glenelg, live near the Holdfast hotel and Glenelg oval. My favourite room in this Federation Villa is the yellow room, my favourite colour. Thanks so much for your tour and the time you took to look into the Laycock family history, so very interesting and moving, you demonstrate empathy, care and compassion for the homes and their previous family residents. Just beautiful :)

I remember this house. I lived on Adelphi Tce for a time. It is tragic watching these elegant stately old homes disappear for a cold boring concrete block. No matter how new these are they can never ever replace these types of buildings.
It is all about money. Greed and money 🧐

Oh my gosh, why won't someone just move the home to a better place? It's beautiful. I would love to have a home just like that. It's perfect. It hurts my heart to hear it will be torn down. That's so wrong. Where are the people who save old, beautiful n historic type homes ?????

Hi Mary, yes that is a question many ask but it is not seen as viable here. Too many permits and safety issues relocating a home in the city. Especially stone built homes. Thanks so much for watching :-)

Are any of these wonderful villas ever moved to a different location if someone would want to buy it? Who actually would be the owner of the villa if, in fact, someone wanted to buy it and relocate it before it was demolished? Thank you. I enjoy your videos very much. It's sad to see history destroyed! 😫

And btw, those curtains were made of a heavy 'satin' material. Velvet has a nap and isn't smooth and shiny like that.
