As a massive Toyota fan I bought a Mazda 3 in 2014 and have had several Mazdas since then. For what you get for your money Mazda is now my number one Japanese automaker!
Thanks! I bought a car made by Toyota in 2005. When it due for replacement in a decade or so, I will carefully consider your helpful suggestion as Mazda will likely be a division of Toyota.
They were fine back in mid 2010s but so far behind now. They're using same engine, transmission still as the 2014 Mazda 3 except with torsion beam rear suspension or and their tech especially driver's assist is just so far behind. I test drove the 2022 cx5 and cx50 turbo and so disappointed at how outdated it was compared to even conservative Toyota and Honda
@@gilboman Honda now is a cars with unreliable turbo engines and CVT crap)) New Mazda with their old technology now more preferable than Honda, they are more reliable.
Mazda is a great automaker. The Mazda3 is a wonderful compact sedan for daily use. But without the Mazda6, the brand feels empty to me, it was their second most reliable vehicle and they trashed it. I hope to see it come back.
Yeah I used to be a Toyota Tacoma owner and it has transmission issues. I jumped ship to Mazda and having a 2019 Mazda SUV and a 2020 Mazda 3 there have no issues. Technologically it’s behind, but I love the look
Why does everybody complain that the screen is too far away? That's the whole point! It's not MEANT to be touched. The rotary dial is perfect. And with Android Auto, it works perfectly.
This. It’s baffled me how people complain about it when, in my humble opinion, it’s actually so much easier and safer. And this is coming from a previous dial hater. This slander needs to stop.
@@lmh12121hell, even Rivian realized in their new models that dials (placed on the steering wheel for your thumbs, and controlled by electronic haptic motors, but still REAL PHYSICAL DIALS) are easily the best way to control things like volume, menu scrollthrough, and so on.
ya i dont get why people wanna fiddle with a touch screen. i have a 2015 mazda 3 and ive only ever touched it on purpose 3 times over all these years. the dial is perfect. the worst was it started ghosting after about 5 years which means it registers phantom touches on it so it just starts doing random things. drove me nuts.
It's one of the main reasons I bought it. My wife's Subaru Legacy Touring has a giant screen with everything built into it, including climate controls, nav, etc. It lags, it's difficult to operate while driving, and feels clunky. I love physical buttons and controls, and feel they nailed this design.
I won’t mention the person by name, but I used to be a fan of another reviewer. All of his reviews were the same, half of it devoted to the styling. I can see what the vehicle looks like, I don’t need someone explaining the styling cues. I also am not interested in how many Twinkies fit in the center console. This guy rocks!
@@jayvee9629 thanks. I wasn’t familiar with him until he started popping up in my feed over the past few months. Watched one video where he reviewed my truck (Tacoma TRD Pro 6MT), and was extremely underwhelmed by it. Didn’t go over any specs of the truck at all.
Owner of a mazda cx5 2016 here. 99k miles on it and still have not taken it for its first repair at any shop not even a repair at home. Best vehicle i have ever owned.
This review was probably the biggest reason we just got a CX-50, Soul Red, NA Premium Plus. We took it up the mountains in Arizona 110+ heat this weekend and it was fine. I personally feel better having the non-turbo, but time we tell. I personally love seeing a little extra space under the hood. Most importantly, my wife loves her new car.
Same color I got in the premium plus trim nonturbo! it’s just been a year since I’ve had it and it’s been a great little car! yes, I would’ve liked the power of the turbo, but I was just a little leery of the reliability of a turbo! I love it though!
@@Almighty_cornholioThe air-conditioning keeps you cool, but it definitely affects the non-turbo performance up and down hills going to Payson from Phoenix.
These are the best reviews I've seen. It's great to see someone look at the actual mechanical details of the vehicle rather than just parroting manufacturer talking points. It's interesting that every Mazda car seems to more or less share the same drivetrain including the differential, torsion beam, and small axles. I'd love to see you do a review of the mazda3 hatchback!
Just to be clear. The Mazda 3 didn’t have a torsion beam until recently. The CX-5 has a multi-link rear suspension. The torsion beam is new and rare and only on 3 models now.
Your review is way better than most "car guys review", who just talk about drive feel subjectively and go through interior lights and infotainment, but never really talk in depth about what's under the hood like chassis, suspension, exhaust system etc. Well Done!
As a non-mechanic, with very little knowledge or understanding of engines, I appreciate how your explanations are easy for the everyday person to understand. Thank you! I drove Mazdas for over 20 years. Love them.
I've owned all 3 over the past 7 or 8 years, Mazda's handling and interiors are far above Toyota and Honda, and super reliable. The fact they don't use a CVT transmission makes them the winner in my book, but you can't go wrong with any of the big 3 Japanese automakers in my opinion. Another great review from the best, most honest mechanic around. Thanks as always AMD.
@@Gopinathk17 Toyota-philes have an inherent disdain for Nissan but they will quietly approve of Subaru since they share enough with Toyota. In reality there are some major quality issues affecting Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, and Nissan. Look no further than the growing number of 2GR-FKS V6's failing out of the blue with cracked blocks or sudden oil pump failures. The 3rd gen Tacoma was "least reliable midsize truck" for 3 years in a row according to Consumer Reports. The 2022 Tundra has had a significant number of quality complaints, including engine failures at low mileage. Honda has had major issues plaguing their vehicles in recent years. Mazda is in the same boat, lots of complaints with newer powertrains. Subaru has had powertrain issues for years. They're all lowering their standard for oil consumption because it has become so common for their vehicles to burn nearly 1 quart every 1,000 miles. For the last decade Toyota has insisted that it's "normal" if your Toyota drinks 1 quart every 1200 miles. They all have this low standard and it's not uncommon. Nissan is not what it was 20 years ago. They're above Hyundai/Kia in quality but if you can afford to shop Honda/Toyota/Subaru/Mazda, consider it depending on the model. Some models by all these companies are garbage so study as much as you can.
I love my Mazdas (we’ve got 2), and definitely a great value considering they don’t have a BS waitlist and huge dealer markup, but I’m just not sure I would go that far just yet. Hoping to see one day these 2.5 Skyactive G engines go to 300k. Hoping the carbon build up CCN mentioned is just the only thing to worry about.
@@guillermorodriguez836 if you have the turbo. Then yes the carbon buildup exist on every turbo engine, especially the 4 cylinders. But what you can do after the warranty is over, I recommend seafoam, or any additive that clean the carbon inside. I forgot the name of it but there a method in doing it beside Seafoam. Funny thing is Ford is using the same idea from Mazda if you really pay attention to their vehicle. The Ecoboost. But which one is more reliable, I hope both Mazda and Ford with their turbo 4 cylinders engine. This helps consumer choices beside Toyota. Note, I am in the Facebook Mazda group, and folks mention their carbon or some sort that it causes build up as well for non turbo versions. But I am curious like you on long term reliability. But Mazda do make good vehicles regardless. Reason I said the Mazda is the new Toyota because Toyota is failing at many departments and reliability.
@CarCareNut Remix【𝟒𝟒𝟑 】𝟓𝟖𝟒-𝟔𝟒𝟎𝟏 Could the plastic radiator cap and it's location result in coolant loss and engine damage/failure? Will the problem be solved if we replace the cap with a aftermarket metal cap or not? I am considering buying this vehicle. Would this issue be a deal breaker? Is the radiator cap in the same location in "non-turbo/naturally aspirated" engine setup also?
I currently own the same year, make, and model as your car. Still going strong! No issues other than some fading paint due to extreme Florida weather 😅.
I’ve had a Cx-50 for almost a year and 25k miles. I’ve taken it off the road and really put it to the test. I constantly hear issues people complain about with the size of the diff and the rear suspension. Here’s my take: the diff is fine, it’s a fwd based vehicle and only puts 50% of the power to the rear. The diff is fine for that and definitely not as expensive to maintain as a larger diff. I’ve had mine in the mud and have yet to get it stuck. Ground clearance is more of an issue than the diff. The reas suspension: it’s almost meaningless because the Cx-50 is one of the best handling vehicles I’ve ever driven. Had an issue where I had to basically moose test it and it was very planted. I’ve driven it down tail of the dragon with spirited driving and it was able to keep up with the sports cars in the corners. I also disagree about the screen. Is it a little more difficult to use at first? Yes, but once you get the hang of it, I actually prefer the way it is. You don’t have to take your eyes off the road to use the knob. I hate touch screens especially when manufacturers bury feature in different screens. other than that I agree and great video on the CX-50.
Thanks, drove Mazda in the 80 and 90s then drove GMCs. My last car in an Envoy that I have had with 200k miles and starting to have issues. I would have bought a new GMC Terrin but it has not the best reviews. I love my Envoy but I need a reliable car. The CX 50 has everything I want in a car, plus great reviews. Thanks all.
@@sandrahossman2089 i’m not a larger person (5’10.5” and 200lbs) so the seats are comfortable to me. The seat heaters feel real good if your back starts hurting too.
You are truly the best reviewer on TH-cam. No one covers the driveline like you do. It’s the most important part of a vehicle. We are going to drive the cx50 and cx5 and because of you I’m way more educated on the vehicle. Thank you
Doug, You should check out Sarah N Tune videos & Reviews. She is truly the best reviewer. Once you check out her channel (She looks like a younger cross of Sandra Bullock and Cher!), you will see what I mean.
Love the channel but I must disagree, respectfully of course, with the very common complaint about the lack of touch screen. Personally, I really like that. The touch screens in our other vehicles always look dirty. They attract fingerprints and I agree with Mazda. They are very distracting. We have a 2017 Mazda in the family and using the rotary controls are very easy and intuitive to learn. In a matter of an hour or two, anyone will be a Master of It and it is far less distracting than trying to tap the screen over less than perfect road conditions.
We bought a 2023 CX50 Turbo Premium. It has about 500 miles now. We didn’t get the Premium Plus, because we live in Texas and we don’t need the heated seats in the back and we didn’t care for the all around view. This car is driven primarily by my wife. Her old car was a 2017 Honda Accord Touring with the V6 engine. Before that she drove a Lexus IS350. My wife really likes this Mazda. She likes the exterior and interior and you are right, the interior is more Lexus than Toyota. She has no problems with the infotainment neither. She loves how easily this car accelerates too. Negatives about this car. I find the highway ride to be much noisier than the Honda. I wish it had more cubbies in the interior and a little bit bigger backseats. Probably, because the Honda had huge seats. Yes, the suspension does ride stiffer, but it handle bumps much better than the Honda. The IS350 had even harder suspension and when we hit a bump hard it sounded really bad on the Lexus. So, we don’t mind the suspension. In general we are very happy with the car, even though it has a higher sticker price than a typical RAV4 or CRV, but the Mazda just feels more premium. For a few thousands more you get so much more.
@@dilakshandk77 depends what needs you may have. If you like a sportier feel and don't mind a little less room, then it is a good choice. The turbo makes it fast for this segment too. You should also consider the CX-5 because it is similar, but with less ground clearance but thousands cheaper. We just liked how the CX50 looked and didn't like how the CX-5 looked. On the other hand, if you want a comfortable ride with more space and don't care as much for the driving dynamics then there are many other options like the RAV4, CR-V or the Forrester. We love the exterior looks, the extra ground clearance, nicer interior than competitors and the turbo engine. In the end it's a personal choice, but i will generally recommend it as long as you know it has shortcomings. I hope that helps.
@@johnl9337 I really like the looks of the car and the interior as well.only concern is the reliability in the long term. I don’t mind spending extra to get the cx-50 over Mazda cx-5
@@dilakshandk77 generally speaking, Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda have decent reliability. Yet, my wife's last Accord had AC problems with 31k. So, at times it all depends on your luck. The turbo version has more parts than the non turbo. But nowadays is almost impossible to not get a turbo car. The non turbo is too slow for how my wife needs, so it's the turbo for her.
I want that new 6 cylinder engine in a cx50. Dont want or need 3 row seating, but do want that hp and torque without working a 4cyl. engine to an early death.
Love the video. First one I have seen from you and I am a fan. but... Huge disagree on the Knob and touchscreen. I just got my CX-50 this week from a Tesla Model 3, so I was definitely used to using a touch screen. I am so much happier using the knob even with Carplay. I never struggle to select stuff with the Knob. I think with more time using it you get used to it and it just makes sense. Plus my screen stays clean of fingerprints, which is nice. lol The screen being that far away and close to where my eyes are on the road is so amazing too.
I just bought a 2024 CX50 base model and I love it. I'm kind of a tech Fudd when it comes to cars but I do appreciate how Mazda is modern without being too complicated.
My wife has a Mazda CX-5 Turbo and I never thought I'd like it so much. In fact I LOVE it! I love how zippy and quick it is, I love how efficient and comfortable for our road trips it is. I love the feel of a BMW or Lexus inside but cheaper than a Toyota which I have to say they've gotten a little too expensive plus they nickel and dime you on options. With Mazda, the options are limited which means the top tier model comes fully loaded like the old days unlike other manufacturers that even if you get the top model leave a lot of options out. I also love that the engine, transmission have been proven to be reliable. I can't wait for them to switch to RWD platform so I can get one. I'm even looking forward to the Hybrid cause I don't like electric cars.
Great review. I just picked up the CX50 meridian edition. The Engine is great and the car is responsive, definitely zoom zoom; however, I would like to point out for those interested, the road noise (not air noise) is loader than expected (maybe from the aggressive tires). The factory stereo (Non-Bose) speakers are fair in the front, but lack quality in the back. XM radio is not installed and the navigation is installed, but you have to purchase a SD card separately. As for the display, I respectfully disagree, I like it and think it's well placed. It's adds to the driving experience. You don't have to move your head position by looking down to the display when you're driving 75 MPH. Minimal distraction, slight adjustment of your eyes and you see everything. The controls are handy and very functional. It only takes a few minutes to learn and understand them. Thanks again for the review, Subscribed!!
Cx50- my concern is possible bumpy ride vs cs5 . I have bad lower back pain after sitting 1 hour in many cars. Did you notice a bumpy ride with is unibody construction vs independent struts on cs5? Gary
@@file1man Mazdas are like BMW's. Bumpiness is due to the taught suspensions with no body roll. Great for perfectly smooth autobahns, not so great avoiding bumpiness for achy breaky U.S. road driving.

AND I love the SIMPLE design in this-- not all the tech BS to mess up the look and to DISTRACT the driver.

I appreciate your comment about Mazda automatic transmissions.. It’s one of the best on the market for their price ranges. And I agree with you that every other auto maker should just do the same thing. Honda for example tweak their CVT almost every year, makes it “simulate gears” and all those gimmicks. No one still likes those, thats why they keep changing it. Makes me wish Mazda to just make their transmissions available for sale for other manufacturers.
Slow as molasses shifts and terrible fuel economy...no thanks. The shitty 6spd was okay in 2014 for an econobox like a mazd3 but not in 2022 for a 40k+ suv
Agree with you on 100%. Old dependable automatic transmission more reliable than new CVT crap, but some people's doesn't understand that, like this guy from comment up here. They will save about 1mpg but they will pay thousands dollars to replace they CVT crap right after their warranty will end, and all the time they will listen to this terrible constant sound of a roaring engine when picking up speed with CVT 😆. New turbo engines and CVT transmissions this is the main reason for me to stay away from new Hondas. I guess Mazda can take the same 8 speed automatic transmission like on new RAV4, they are good.

I had a Mazda 3, and I absolutely loved the rotary dial for the infotainment screen. You don't have to take your eyes off the road while you're driving. And reaching to touch a little small icon on the screen is simply not safe. And besides that, you don't have to deal with all the fingerprints. Please Mazda.... keep the rotary dial!

Some folks(e.g. Honda /Toyota /VW loyalists) may dislike its look, its 'old school' /conventional auto tranny, its official fuel economy ratings, its low tech rear suspension, it's relative lack of interior space, its lack of touch screen and even the Mazda brand in general, etc.... However, nobody can honestly disagree that the CX50 interior is the best in its price class in terms of design, material quality and workmanship/fit & finish by a huge margin.
Nah interior quality is shit when compared to even the cx5. Hard plastics everywhere, no felt or soft open/close glove box. It's a cost cutting special..not as bad as VW but it's a clear step down for those who've driven older Mazda products
Thank you for your non biased report makes a pleasant change from some that looks. It depends on the amount of money offered whether they tell the truth or not. Your reports are respected and appreciated. Thank you.

We’ve been Toyota owners for decades. We recently rented this Mazda, and put 1,000 miles on it. I agree with the AMD’s take on the touch screen. The radio is buried in all the digital options, making it annoying to find radio stations when traveling. The Apple Car Play works well, and the dial between the seats integrates well with functionality. This is a comfy car to road trip with! The reason I looked for AMD’s review of this model is because my wife liked it so much, she is seriously considering switching from Toyota. The review of the motor and tranny design helps to reassure me that we are not making a mistake. I especially like the review of the turbo/non-turbo options. Small creature comforts make this a cool car to drive… For example, the cruise control with distance sensors for highways, and the Auto feature for the wipers which sense the rain for one, and two, sense the intensity of the rain to adjust the wiper frequency. AMD did not mention the buttons on the steering wheel for the sound system, so I want to say… while there are volume controls on the wheel, I found myself using the volume knob by the shifter more. I will try to update these comments if we do buy this car. I am interested in how Mazda changes the 2024 model too. So, it may be a while before I do. Thanks AMD! Another great video!
Hi AMD, I love your videos. I always watch them, and I really appreciate your honesty, I recently bought a 2024 cx-50 N/A, and the non turbo doesn't have those plastic parts under the engine cover for the coolant. Great reviews keep it up thanks a lot.

Great review especially of the interior. Yes this is Lexus /Acura quality. Love the simplicity of the button layout. You don’t have to go into the infotainment system to turn on the HVAC etc. leather seats and dash look amazing. 20 inch rims is overkill. Minimal rubber w thin sidewalls definitely gives a too bumpy ride. 17 inch rims would be great. A Ford Mustang Mach 1 has 19 inch rims ! 20 inch rims do not belong on this Mazda. I’m happy w my 2002 Lexus ES300 but if I was in the market for a car a Mazda would be right up there w Lexus/Toyota.
The Select, preferred, and preferred plus have 17" wheels. The Turbo Meridian has 18" with falcon all terrain tires. The NA (non turbo) S Premium plus, base Turbo, and this one in the video have 20" wheels.
I love the non touch screen keeps it clean of finger prints. I also love the dial and volume k obs where they are and it isn't hard to use once you get used to it took me about a day or 2 to get used to and it is not as soft of suspension, but handles really well it takes corners like a sports car, I have the non turbo and keeps up just fine with other cars, there is an auto hold feature for the brakes when you come to a complete stop and when you use that the car takes off quicker maybe like brake torquing. I love the cx50 and mazdas for their finish and quality also not as expensive as the other luxury brands. This cx50 is always breaking necks too. It is going to be one of the top sellers like the cx5
My understanding was the torsion beam rear suspension was used to get the towing capacity up. The CX-50 has a max tow capacity of 3500lbs if you opt for the turbo where the CX-5 with the independent rear suspension has a max towing capacity of 2000lb no matter which engine you choose. I agree the IRS is better for handling but in all honesty when you drive the CX-50 and CX-5 back to back you don't really notice any difference.
I am happy Mazda and Toyota are working together. Both companies take pride in doing their best. Some of the products will be made in Alabama in a joint venture with Toyota..
Currently own 2020 CX5 turbo. About to purchase either a 2024 CX5 or Cx50.. tough decision!! May try non turbo as it may be the last car I buy. Thoughts, thanks …. a senior who appreciates your expertise and presentation.
The good thing about the DI implementation on the Skyactive 4 cylinder is that the intake is on the front and easily accessed if you do need the walnut blaster treatment.
Toyota is my favorite auto manufacturer Mazda being a close second … what I think gives them a huge edge is not having a “Luxury” brand and just focusing on mazda alone.
One thing that Mazda has ALWAYS done right is the beautiful interior design of their cars. They make average "family" cars look and feel like a luxury car. Clean lines, minimalist configurations will remind you that this is truly a CAR, and not a space shuttle cockpit with millions of buttons everywhere (unless you're into that lol).
Their interior design is great over the last 2-3 years but certainly not throughout Mazda’s history. I still worry about their history of rusting where I live in the upper Midwest.
Phenomenal review. Way more helpful than most as you are technically knowledge. Thank you for going for the mechanics of the vehicle and educating us. A true public service!
Mazda infotainment system is much safer for the driver to use. Ask any Mazda owners and they will tell you the control knob is easy to use once you get used to it. Driver can keep their eyes on the road when using the infotainment system, not as fast as a touch screen but much safer. You have to own a Mazda to appreciate it.
I own a Mazda and it's shit and not safer especially in current gen where everything is more buried than before just for changing audio And if they cared about safety, they would actually update their ancient driver's assist . Mazda is just cheap and have no money to develop things because of their size. Why they're using decades old powertrain, solid read suspension and cheapening interior like in cx50 compared to cx5 They really blew it with their dud diesel and DOA skyactiv x
I own 2 Mazdas with the control knob and I wish it was a touchscreen when the car is in motion. Apple CarPlay was designed to be used with a touchscreen, and CarPlay is mainly what I use.
This fellow does excellent technical reviews. Thousand times better than other reviews, even the manufacturer itself will not provide such a detail review. Their review would be from selling point. I would trust his review. I hope more folks subscribe to his channel.
I own a 2019 MAZDA3 Premium with AWD. That differential looks fine under the 3, but under the CX-50 it’s hilariously small lol. Functionally though, the AWD system is a beast. My car has 1” lowering springs all around, and even still, the car is a complete animal in the snow.
@ the car care nut - which car or brand will be best Mazda cx50 or Subaru Outback or forester based on reliability and technology. Toyota is having issues with most of updated models lately and high price. I am a 4Runner guy since 2004.
We had a 2020 Mazda3 Hatchback and loved it! However, somebody hit the car in the back left pillar and c panel and it totaled the car. But we loved it and I decided to move up in price and room cause we have grandkids. Mazda is definitely making it's best cars right now. We upgraded to a CX-50 Premium Turbo. The 2020 didn't have turbo and though it was enough to get you where you wanted to go and fun to drive it was just lacking a little. So we got another Mazda and the cock pit feels a lot like the Mazda 3. Our 2020 had speed sign recognition, but the CX-50 premium did not. I miss that feature, but I love the turbo. It goes! I'm hoping reliability wise the turbo lasts. The car is fun to drive and zoom zoom is back baby. I agree with him about the infotainment and dial controls. It's a bit ackward and still is even after having to play around with them for 3 years, So I am glad that with Android Auto or Apple, it is touchscreen. For whatever reason, Mazda gave us all the bells and whistles, but backed those off a little in it's trims in the future models. I guess they was giving too much away for the price. I'd love to have the premium plus, but I did not want to wait for them to have ship it. So we are missing a few features, but still gained some features we didn't have with the Mazda3. So here are several things that are cons in my opinion that I wish Mazda would change that he did not mention. 1. There are not enough cubby areas to put extra things in the cockpit. I find I put stuff around the infotainment wheel because of it. Keys another phone, knife, wallet, etc. Need to figure out a way to make a cubby to put the knick knacks cause I don't like putting things in the side panel pockets and the phone charger is not so good if you have a case on your phone. I have to take my case off to charge my S21 Ultra. 2. The arm rest door or I should say doors are ackward. To open the arm rest you have to open half of one side and then open the other to get inside. It stinks. as I can see the hinges breaking in time if not careful. 3. There is no USB ports in the small cubby in front of the shifter. The Mazda3 had them, but for some reason Mazda decided to give us just a 12v cigarette lighter port. You have to buy your own plug with USB ports to have charging ports. There are USB ports in the arm rest. But hard to use them if you have stuff in there. 4. Piano black glossy trim around the infotainment and radio dials. Matte black or something like black carbon fiber trim would have been much better so you don't have to worry about fingerprints. Aftermarket trim is available so for this area and around vents and door panels we will be changing it. The Toyota like trim with piano black and chrome surrounding it stinks. Stay with one or two colors in trim. Stop with the satin finish chrome or aluminum like features. A black chrome or graphite color would be better to blackout everything. 5. Headrests don't adjust up or down or have different front to back head adjustment. 6. No blink indicators in the mirror, only on the outside of the mirrors and the driver can't see them. I'm use to looking at the mirrors and not the instrument panel for signal lights. 7. No fog lights. This should be standard for an "off-road" SUV. 8. Offer blackout options for badges. 9. Moon roof only goes back 8 to 10 inches. But the bigger glass and the auto roller is nice. Please don't ever leak. 10. Offer a cover to hide the stuff in the trunk. Netting seems like a cheap standard option you get with the cargo blocks. I have bought an aftermarket cover to hide what's back there. 11. Offer 18" wheels on Falcon Wildpeaks with black 6 spoke wheels as an option. This is what we did to make the ride less bumpy, more off roady and it looks great. 12. The luggage rails should be flat black not chrome or whatever the color is. 13. All plastic pieces should be flat black, or charcoal and not glossy black to match the black plastic fender wells and rocker panel areas. The C-5 can stay satin chrome, but the C-50 should have black badging as a standard. He gives a very good review. I too wish the turbos were in front and not in the back. I also wish there was better placement and a beefier transfer case and better suspension in the back. The back vents look good to me even if they are not functional like the fronts. The plastic radiator cap bothers me. It should be metal for an area susceptible to hot and cold changes. But overall we are very happy with the CX-50 right now. Ask me in 5 years about the reliability. I'm betting there will be very little to complain about and it will be good for another 5 or 10 years or even longer.
Ended up replacing our 4Runner with this and although I miss our 4Runner, this has been a really good decision! Didn’t go top of the line but close enough and it is more than enough!
Nice review. I wonder if buying a tire size with the same width but one size more rubber height if it reduces the bumpiness. If I purchase this vehicle, on my short list, I would replace the tires around 12K miles with a little more rubber height. Which will also add ride height. Maybe add some undercarriage protection to the rear diff.
You really gave out all the details about this C-50. I love Mazda cars, and they're so easy to operate. I have a Mazda 3 2009-2010 model and i have learned a lot from it. All my front suspension are gone but it still drives. Thumbs up to this video my guy!!11

Best thing Mazda did was get away from Ford. They make reliable cars now.
How about Subarus and Nissan's who are also from Japan?

Would you recommend?
@@gilboman you really are a Chevy Cavalier Ralley sport loving goon.
Thank you for your non biased report makes a pleasant change from some that looks. It depends on the amount of money offered whether they tell the truth or not. Your reports are respected and appreciated. Thank you.
I don't like turbo. I purchased the CX-50 Select model with the naturally aspirated engine. I love the car.
Is there a lot of difference between the NA and turbo in the lower speed and torque, like in block to block city driving. The NA lacks a little on the highway but around town it’s peppy reminds me of the Nissan Altima 2.5 engine.
@@AG-is5vv I don't find the NA engine lacks anything on the highway. Once you learn the shift habits of the transmission this car, with the NA engine flies.
@@AG-is5vvtons of torque in the turbo
Just bought one and really really enjoy it for our outdoor loving family of 4 had a Mazda 3 hatch about 7 years ago and a Subaru Forester in between, this is a great feeling car,
2 features unique to the CX-50 that you didn't mention are: the available panoramic moonroof and ability to reflect turn by turn directions from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the heads up display.
Yep, on the Turbo Premium Plus models with all the bells and whistles.
@@randy74989 you don't need the turbo to get that. The premium plus is better
@@lavaregion6968 Correct; however, if you want the additional horsepower and additional bells and whistles then the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus All-Wheel Drive is the best. The problem is that no dealers where I live have the Trim, color exterior or interior that I want. I can wait or look elsewhere. Lexus RX500h is a great alternative!
@@randy74989 own 400h ,less then100k,change actuator 3 times,3k each time, will never buy Lexus again.
@@raymondwong7674 That's unfortunate, I've never heard a Lexus owner complain about their Lexus and Lexus has a great warranty. What did the dealer do or not do for you?
Hood struts are economical and easy to install. I did it on my Mazda 6 in less than 20 minutes. I really like Mazdas and the rotary dial as well. 😄
I’m getting a Premium plus. Wish I got one with a turbo but I found a gently used Premium plus at a great price.
I’ve had a CX5 since 2018. Absolutely no issues at all. I love it. I will get another or the CX50 next. Very happy with Mazda.
my cousins first cx-5 which had i think 1.5 l engine running 100k still no issues runs like a champ … i think mazda have a very reliable engines like the toyota and honda ..
Thank you for keeping your reviews honest and real and fair
Great video, watched it before I bought mine (same trim/color as in this video) six months ago. I'm still in love with this car and catch myself looking back at it in parking lots as I'm walking away. Great upgrade from my 2014 Mazda 3 hatch, lol.
Me too! It’s been a year since I’ve had mine and I still love looking at it!😁
I still look at my Honda civic 2015 with affection as I walk away. Hopefully, this CX50 in ingot blue mettalic will be my next ride😅
One of the best reviews on a vehicle I have watched yet! The open backing plates do invite small rocks to get in and squeal. It did in my older Mazda 3 anyway. The cladding is nice if you drive on gravel or have to go through tar on roads.
By far the best car review I have watched to date! Keep doing what you are doing
Thank you for the explanation. Many people need Technical explanation in a simple and structure way before buying a car. You have done well
The rear suspension on the CX-50 differs from the CX-5 because the chassis is based on the Mazda3 and CX-30.
Unibody cx50 stiff vs cs5 isolated independent
Thank you "The Car Care Nut", I was able to take this information to the dealership and feel confident about my purchase. Btw, the sales rep mentioned I was the first customer to know that the front intake was functional and the rear was cosmetic. Ha, all thank sto you! Thanks again
Small creature comforts make this a cool car to drive…
For example, the cruise control with distance sensors for highways, and the Auto feature for the wipers which sense the rain for one, and two, sense the intensity of the rain to adjust the wiper frequency.
Geest idea to rent before purchasing, may I ask which rental company you rented from ?
Hi AMD, I love your videos. I always watch them, and I really appreciate your honesty, I recently bought a 2024 cx-50 N/A, and the non turbo doesn't have those plastic parts under the engine cover for the coolant. Great reviews keep it up thanks a lot.
Subscribed! I've watched about three of your reviews so far and LOVE the technical details. (The really important stuff for those that want longevity and reliability!)
I had a Mazda Miata for 16 years and loved it. Great car and very simple to work on. Thanks for your reviews and tech-knowledge! Keep em' coming!
👍
I hope you're one of the first reviewers of the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid! I'd love your perspective of the implementation of the Toyota hybrid engine in this car once its released.
Yes, I’m waiting for your opinions on new hybrid
I wish the Cylinder Deactivation system would have been analyzed.
Yes. That is important.
Just discovered this guy
I have a 2020 Mazda 3 with all the bells and whistles
I absolutely love this car
My first Mazda
C column is an issue but the warnings from the car make it forgivable
This guy gives a nuts and bolts view that is refreshing
My next car
MAZDA
I've got a 21'. 2 years and nearly 80,000kms later. I'm still super happy with it.
I watched your review for CX5 and CX50, excellent reviews. Which one you recommend to buy between the two and 2023 CR-V? Thanks
i am the owner of a Mazda 6 station wagon from 2005...I change the oil in the spring and in autumn...I have 218 000 Kms on the dial...and everything works perfectly my biggest worry is I will at some time in the future have to buy a new car...too bad...I like this one...
Picking up my 2004 CX-50 today. This very one...same trim and color. I'm excited.
Your reviews are the best I’ve seen.
You are siriously one of the best car reviewers I have seen!
This is the kind of reviews we need. This guy speaks my language.
I am happy Mazda and Toyota are working together. Both companies take pride in doing their best. Some of the products will be made in Alabama in a joint venture with Toyota..
Which is unfortunately being built by lazy uncaring Americans. Oops.
Like the corolla cross.
Mazda is so underrated I don't see enongh of them on the streets, good looking cars great quality and reliable.
Currently own 2020 CX5 turbo. About to purchase either a 2024 CX5 or Cx50.. tough decision!! May try non turbo as it may be the last car I buy. Thoughts, thanks …. a senior who appreciates your expertise and presentation.
I can’t decide between the cx5 or cx5 myself. I’m leaning toward the cx5.
@@amykoviack1836 Same but I think I will go with the CX-5 Turbo Signature. I test drove all of them.....
CX5 Turbo Signature....all the way...
Bought a 2022 Mazda CX-30 last year, works well enough for me, no complaints at all. But am always interested in new stuff :D
Since you said the ride is a bit bumpy I would love to know how the ride of the CX-5 compares to this one.
Watch Sarah-n-Tuned's review on this car, no such claim regarding "bumpy"
I just bought the CX 5! I LOVE IT! It is like driving a sports car. Really has get up and go!! Zoom Zoom❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The problem with any vehicle with a Turbo engine is that they don't last very long.
I own a Mazda and it's shit and not safer especially in current gen where everything is more buried than before just for changing audio
And if they cared about safety, they would actually update their ancient driver's assist . Mazda is just cheap and have no money to develop things because of their size. Why they're using decades old powertrain, solid read suspension and cheapening interior like in cx50 compared to cx5
They really blew it with their dud diesel and DOA skyactiv x
Same with my 3 also
@ the car care nut - which car or brand will be best Mazda cx50 or Subaru Outback or forester based on reliability and technology. Toyota is having issues with most of updated models lately and high price. I am a 4Runner guy since 2004.
One important info. This CX-50 is built in Alabama(USA). I will take the CX-5 built in Japan anyday.
Toyota watch out, American love for Mazda is growing fast for every new model introduced.
Ended up replacing our 4Runner with this and although I miss our 4Runner, this has been a really good decision! Didn’t go top of the line but close enough and it is more than enough!
I really enjoy your reviews and was waiting for this specific review on the CX-50.
I've always been a Toyota customer but this Mazda is actually something I'd consider. For the price and reliability.
By far the best looking Mazda ever. High quality review, well done!
I personally love the controls without needing to smudge up the screen.
Mazda does seem to have good transmissions.
Good video. Im debating between this and a CX5. Im buying 1 in 1.5 months. 80% going with the CX50
I was thinking to buy a Toyota Rav but now I change my mind,I definitely love this car specially MazdaCx50meridian ,thank you for the awesome review👏👏👏👏🤣
I came from a 21 RAV4 to a Mazda, CX 30. Plenty of car for us empty-nesters. The Toyota we had we found too much road noise and just very cheap. Feel inside. The Mazda is very quiet with quality feel inside soft touch everywhere.
I love your reviews - you give the good with the bad points and are the only reviewer I've seen that really gets into the mechanical layout and problems with serviceability and possible problem areas in the long-term. I've noticed your reviews are heavily Japan and Korea specific - I wish you would branch out and review other models by other companies like Ford, GM and even those German cars you allude to when talking about over-complication. Great reviews AMD - please consider branching out to other builders besides Toyota, Honda and Hyundai.
I have a 2012 Mazda 3 skyactiv with 120k miles and never had any issues. Its only been in the shop for regular maintenance Still drive it to work 60 miles a day and still going strong.
bought used I guess?
@@rafars2246 huh. what?
I went from a Mazda truck to a Mazda RX-8, and now a 2016 Mazda6 for almost 6 years now. Same 2.5L and automatic transmission, and I also drive it 55 miles to work 4 days a week, 13 gallons gets me 380-400 miles. But man, I can get 35-40 mpg on highway. All 450 miles from LA to Phoenix last week with a gallon left to spare 🤣
If you drive 60 miles a day for work since 2011, you car would not have 120k, hence my question. Simple math.
@@rafars2246 First of all i bought it late 2012 not 2011 and i also have a second car and i had a motorcycle for a few years, so i dont drive it all the time. So is your little equation starting to add up yet.

I'm definitely looking forward to the hybrid version. If I can find one in stock without the ridiculous dealer markups I see for the Rav4 hybrid, then I might just buy one to park next to my wife's future 2023 Lexus RX350h... if that Lexus shows up in our driveway by next spring I will be pleasantly surprised.
