- The 2023 Mazda CX-50 GT Turbo ($45,700 starting in Canada, $42,300 in the US) is a brand new crossover that aims to capture consumers who want a sophisticated yet rugged experience. Adorned with black plastic cladding to mirror its outdoorsy vibe, and with optional amenities such as ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, the CX-50 appears to capture that experience.
But how is it to drive? And how does the torquey, 256 hp, 2.5 L turbo four cylinder perform? This particular crossover may have a certain sports-car attribute that may or may not belong in a vehicle such as this… Watch to find out what Thomas and James think! We hope you enjoy the episode. James trying to talk about the car and Thomas is like "but the steering!"
Thomas is a guy with clear priorities
@@fcorivers can't steer him in other directions lol
Stop with the sedans and SUV's...yawn, yawn. Tell Mazda to make a straight 6, rear wheel drive estate and I'll daily the sh** out of it.
@@TermlessHGW yeah but it'd be you and like 3 more other people, they're a smallish brand, they don't have the luxury of making niche cars that won't sell well
I think I hear Thomas talk about stearing more than any other aspect of a car on all his reviews...must be a BMW thing...
Man mazda's steering never dissapoint, somehow mazda always has the best steering among most of its competitor, the first time I drove my uncle's CX 5 I immediatley shocked by the accuracy of the steering, like, a crossover's steering has no business being that heavy and relatively accurate
I have the new m4 competition and this cx-50 and I honestly prefer the steering feel in the mazda which is exactly half the price of my m4. BMW needs to stop trying to compete with porsches and start looking at what mazda is doing, lol.
@@edwint1780 Mazda is coming for BMW with their new RWD platform and inline six
Still remember the first time I drove a mazda. My dad had me pickup a used mazda protege for him and at the time I had an Integra and we also had a similar year corolla and c230 kompressor. I wasn't expecting anything from it but holy shit was I surprised. The thing was just so satisfying to drive.
My mom's CX-30's steering is a thing of beauty. In fact, I almost prefer it to my 2022 Civic Si.
Sounds like they're trying to copy the old BMW X5.
I got my CX-50 turbo in July and every mile I’ve driven has been so much fun. The steering feel was a huge plus in my book. It’s a wonderful blend of sport, luxury & practicality, and I couldn’t be happier!! I look forward to driving it every day!
Thanks for buying the CX-50. I help build it in Huntsville, Alabama. The job is tough but rewarding to see comments like this and see it out in public.
@@steelresilience Rocket City! Personally excited to see these on the road and looking forward to the upcoming CX70 I read was being built there after it's released.
@@steelresilience send me pictures of the CX-90 LoL
@@steelresilience we have one as well and have loved it.
Have every option except the turbo and I have not missed it.
I know it could have more, but I've never been driving and thought, I wish I had more power... Hope your Friday is well!!
@@tommytufguy3432 lol can't! Idk if we're gonna build it.
I agree with this being an emotional choice and not a rational choice, that pretty much defines why Mazda is my favorite daily car brand ❤️ They satisfy my mind being practical cars but also my heart by having amazing looks, kinda luxurious cabins and great driving dynamics ❤️
Same. I watch a lot of car reviews and read a lot about cars, and I always think I want something else. But then I go to my garage, see my CX-5, get into it, drive it, and everyday I realize my heart is so attached to my Mazda and the brand as a whole.
@@weichiwoocheng Yes totally! I also watch a lot of reviews and while I'm still not lucky enough to afford a modern Mazda, whenever I see one on the road (My neighbors have a new CX-5 as well) Oh my heart just gets going ❤️
Years ago I was down in Panama training some Dell sales folks. Talk moved to cars during a break. One local went on and on about how much he liked Mazda cars. He called Mazda the BMW for poor people! Zoom Zoom!
@@mgsxps I’ve even heard Mazda’s referred to as the poor man’s Porsche, which says a lot about Mazdas. Although with the new CX-90 and the push into the premium/luxury territory we may soon just be referring to Mazdas as a class of its own.
Spot on!
Too bad the CX-50 is not available in Europe. 😞
I have a CX-30 Turbo in Soul Red and it's absolutely a head turner. Folks on the street tell me it's the most striking red they've ever seen and I absolutely agree. I'm absolutely in love with the whole CX lineup.
Mazda has been quietly making great cars for some time. I got my sister into a CX7 and she got more features and trim options at the same price used than any other car we looked at during that time.
I too have a 2022 CX-30 Turbo in Soul Red as my commuter car . Keeps miles off my truck and saves me in fuel costs . The Mazda is a blast to drive and the Red gets tons of compliments .
Yeah man, I saw one in red a couple weeks ago and it was amazing. The red black and silver look just popped.
Love my CX30
Don't get into a fender bender cuz the paint respray costs are astronomical due to the extra coats of paint (ask me how I found out). I loved my soul red but I dreaded any scratches.
I have the cx50, previously had a 2017 mazda3.
Let me tell you, I absolutely love my cx50. It's been about 5 months now and have had no complaints. Such a smooth drive. Beautiful design inside and out and overall very comfortable to drive in. Only "issue" i have is the shiny black plastic on the center console and also on the exterior doors.
My 2 Mazdas have the piano black plastic that scratches easily so I went to Amazon and input the make and model year of my Mazda and for less than $30 I purchased aftermarket pre cut metal plates with adhesive strips that simply lay over the black plastic on the console and the window and lock switch area. They look great!
That's it, I'm going for a road test this week. If Thomas cant stop talking about steering feel like that in a cuv, it's got to be good!
That's why i like TH reviews, these guys can feel the cars they test.
These are good. I have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 that I love and new CX-50 that I love. The CX-5 feels slightly more refined, the CX-50 looks more masculine.
I’ve had my CX-50 turbo for two weeks. I absolutely love driving it.
I'm jealous, I'll likely buy one in a couple of years or so. Are you still loving driving it?
It’s been great. The fit and finish are fantastic and steering feel continues to impress. I have the 20 inch rims, so the ride can be jolting at times on our pothole ridden streets here in St. Paul, but otherwise I really enjoy driving it. Even though it’s an SUV, I like the low profile and driving position. Plus there’s little body roll in the twisties, which makes it fun to drive.
@@KimchiBreath thanks for the reply! Ah ya, I'm in Vancouver bc, tons of potholes here too. Maybe I'd go 18's.. One more question, do you run it on 87? I've seen some posts on Reddit saying they had engine issues running it on 87 and some people saying they only pump premium, which would be a deal breaker for me on the turbo..
I usually run it on premium, but haven’t had any issues myself when using 87. I use 87 on long road trips when I’m running through fuel faster. Good luck!
@@KimchiBreathomg I’m twin cities based too this car has done great in the snow for me too
Mazda is doing something interesting here. It doesn’t seem its trying to make a proper utility CUV or a perfect luxury crossover, but an enthusiast sport ute. They’re leaning on engagement. I saw in another review that even manual mode is very locked and snappy.
They’re going anti NPC mobile, cause thats a battle of excess selling not engineering
ive had a cx50 turbo for a little over a year. what a beautiful car with so much charecter and class mixed with rugged practicality. I absolutely love it! Ive gotten countless compliments on it and I love running into other cx50s on the road. I driven it cross country and up and down all of california, effortless drives, makes 10hrs feel like 4 with all the comfort. I love the air cooled seats and how smooth that engine is, just hums at 80mph like it's doing 40. an amazing vehicle
In 2014, I went to test drive what was the new Mazda 6. I remember afterwards getting back in my 2007 Grand Prix and thinking..this feels like I’m driving a garden tractor. Needless to say, I bought the Mazda. I lived in an area of Alaska with nice curvy mountain roads. It was a joy.
a garden tractor 😂
Ha! Past November, drove a CX-9 GT to Yosemite on the eastern approach. I was keeping up with cars, and leaving many SUVs behind as this big and heavy SUV ate up the curves.
"if you're a car enthusiast, and you're like 'oh I don't get to have a sports car', this is the one to get"
As someone over 50 who's dealt with arthritis since my late 30's, that statement nailed it for me. Do I want a 2024 Mustang GT with that sexy V8? Of course! Can I get into and out of it more than once a week without hating my life? Not likely.
I've come to terms with the fact that I need something taller and easier to live with, but I still want something that I can enjoy driving too, so this might be the one to get.
I hear ya. I got disability issues on top of just getting older not to mention a 100+ lb dog. CUV just makes sense for me but most of them are sooooo boring compared to the kinds of performance cars I used to drive.
I don’t even have arthritis but I want to be comfortable. Getting in an out of my Miata is not comfortable and something like this would be great for a daily!
If you're that rickety at 50 then you should spend more time in the gym.
@@bartandaelus359 gotta love the gym rats who think the gym is the answer to everything for everyone completely ignoring all the other things in life that can give someone chronic disabilities.
@@grumpychocobo Their muscles suck away their brain power. So don’t expect common sense 😂
Just bought one of these in this color. Let me tell you, for the money you spend this car feels somewhat similar to a luxury car without the price of a luxury car. We absolutely love it and the steering is so exciting. Interior has a sharp, minimalistic feel and doesn't look cheap. It doesn't have tons of plastic everywhere which I like. The lack of touch screen (apart from Apple car play/Android auto) I thought would be an issue but I actually LOVE it. We did our research and test drove a lot of cars. This is the only vehicle we thought was up to our standards for the money you pay. It is so comfortable and fun to drive. The stereo system is impressive for bose. Love this car!!!!
Do you still like it?
Agreed with all and bought one last because I paid off my 2021 Mazda CX-5 in just under 3 years and I’m excited about that . Wanted to try this one and I like it a lot
My wife got a CX5 a few years ago. We ended up with the Mazda after driving Subarus, Toyotas and Hondas. They all felt like they were about to tip over in a curve. Mazda’s steering and sporty feel did it for us. Now I’m considering this car.
Same here. I bought my wife a CX-5 in 2021. We paid it off in less than 3 years and she has 21,332 miles on it today. I’m going to get a new CX-50 today! Monday! I’m excited. Congratulations to you also.
7:42 One of my favorite moments from any of their reviews 😂
Wasn't ready for it lol
Saw it coming and loved it.
I was thinking it... but didn't think he'd actually say it... laughed so hard when he dropped it!
hes 100% right
It needed to happen, the whole car community needed it. I loved it so much 😂😂😂😂
I agree.
Mazda has the best red paint in the non-luxury category. I'd repaint the Stinger in this red fast af if it wasn't.... gonna cost what it costs
Wrap it then.
@@bartandaelus359 not the same.
I've lost count of how many times I have said or thought how much I love Mazda's red!
I still haven't seen a better red. Luxury, non-luxury, super luxury, nothing looks as good as theazda red.
@@ShonTolliverMusic Acura's Valencia Red Pearl is the only red that I think I could tier higher than Mazda's Soul Red Crystal Metallic
Own a CX 50 Turbo Premium Plus for 8 months now. Love it! Coming from a long line of BMW, X3, being the most recent, this is the only vehicle that has been “satisfying,” to “drive” outside of the German brands. Before buying the CX50, I tested an RDX, a RAV4 Prime and a Lexus NX 350. My son has a Santa Fe…it’s ok. They all did not have that fun factor and were just plain boring. This has all the tech I need and more than I had in my X3. The CX50 is a drivers SUV! I do wish there was a Hybrid, PHEV version but the CX-70 is coming. Zoom, Zoom!
U had an X3 and u think this car is better? Interesting, cause I LOVE the X3 😍
No way this has more tech than a X3 😅 what trim and options did you have
I’m surprised you mentioned having drive an Acura RDX. I love my 2021 Mazda CX-5 so much but I paid it off early and now I have the cash to purchase another car and I was strongly considering the RDX or MDX. I have sat in them but I have not driven either of them. You have me thinking maybe I should stick with a new CX-50.
I cross-shopped this class of car to death and bought a base CX-50. It has the best steering, standard AWD, best infotainment (imo), panoramic sunroof, mesh and leather seats (great for hot climate, full leather requires ventilation only available on upper trims) plenty of cargo space and genuine off-road prowess. The other cars feel like appliances and outright cheap at the lower trims.
Agreed!
I love love love this car. The steering cannot be complemented enough, along with the fact that it doesn't drive like an SUV at all. Driving it at 10/10ths it feels PHENOMENAL. On the level of any AWD sports car you've ever driven. They are not exaggerating when they say you could take it canyon carving. With that AWD system and that steering in a sedan or coupe, you have the best sports car on the market.
Not only that it drives so super smooth a wonderful car
It sounds like exactly what would make sense in the Mazda 3 Turbo
I have a 21 Audi Q3, my wofe just bought this in the turbo platinum plus in desert sand. Hers is much nicer than mine!
I hate this car for not being sold worldwide!
@@stephenlapointe8683 lol, that's quite a statement.
I bought my cx50 premium turbo last Friday. I really love most everything about it! Very responsive in both handling and engine performance. Seats are firm but comfortable and very adjustable! it does take a bit getting used to the media/touch screen. In 1 week it is becoming more intuitive in using it. If you want a luxury riding small suv maybe skip this one BUT if you like driving, handling, quality, something different in all the right ways this is worth looking into! For reference I wanted a 2 door Jeep wrangler but that is so impractical with school age kids, so this was the next best answer for me.
Does has any vibration while it is on parking and still engine is on?
No vibration, idles at 800 rpms. A very smooth engine and transmission
Congratulations! I have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 and just paid it off so I’m keeping it and getting into a new CX-50 this week.
@@znarbarzan7683no thank God. None in my 2021 Mazda CX-5 either
@@2004cyrus Only drawbacks- not very good gas milage(heavy on turbo use). Also I'm 5'9" and it fits me But the lower roofline looks better but maybe lacks enough headroom for over 6' people(maybe, seat does lower). I still love it a year later
Great review. I always liked Mazdas steering/ driving dynamics. I currently own a 17’ CX-5 waiting for a CX-50 since September….
Been looking at this as an “upgrade” from the cx-30 only because of its size. Do have to say the steering is what sold the cx-30 for me! Sports car steering is exactly what it is, awesome content as always!
I absolutely love Mazda’s weighted steering as I knew exactly what the wheels were doing and it felt really sporty and responsive on back roads. I was thinking about getting one of these, but dealership markups are insane for the turbo engined trims. I had a 2018 Mazda6 with the naturally aspirated 2-liter and it felt very underpowered, so I could only imagine what that engine would be like in a heavier CX-50.
markups seem to have gone away at least in my area. I got an already built turbo for 48k which is almost exactly MSRP building on their site.
Exactly
I have a 22 CX-5, and quite frankly I don't need a touch screen. The joystick works perfectly for me, and falls readily to hand with my arm on the armrest. With the buttons around it, and the volume knob I have all I need, and the screen doesn't get crap all over it. The steering is lovely, and it handles well without being punishing. Thank you Mazda for not making it a nausea inducing land barge.
remember when unpainted plastic trim was a big knock against a new car?
No
@@mavfan1 It was a knock on Top Gear. They thought of it as paying more for less
It looks awful on the new Mazdas imo. Especially with the red.
4th gen 4runner (2003-05 years had this) had ugly unpainted fender flares. Aztec, Avalanche but those were ugly no matter what. 2003 G35 had unpainted lower sidesills. Wranglers, maybe 97 pathfinders...and others i can’t recall. This mazda looks decent though.

Mazda has really turned around their whole design and engineering over the past five years. I have a base model CX-30 for the past two years and it's a great small sport crossover, even without the turbo.
Coming from a Honda, I did not expect a steering like this! But its growing on me! I love my CX-50. Not the suspension though! Thanks for the review James and Thomas!
Went car shopping a few months ago, and test drove the Mazda CX5O MERIDIAN. I enjoyed the driving and steering so much that i bought it on the spot. I love driving my car - its not perfect but its fun on the road. I love the fact the screen is small and unobtrusive and not a distraction. Back to just driving... I had Subaru Outbacks, Toyota RAV4, and last had a Ford Explorer. I Left Subaru because of the huge touch screen which I felt was a distraction- Hated the Toyota - felt cheap and the V6 engine I had. was too powerful for the car... The Ford Explorer was nice but ... not fun, just driving a truck.and the driving position not great. The CX50 brings back my love of driving. Its a sports car feel in a smaller SUV needed where I live - gravel and dirt roads. And just in love with my Zircon sand color. Can you tell I have zero interest in self driving cars?lol
lol love it! Solidarity my friend! We love driving a vehicle with soul which I’m thankful that Mazda created for us!
Agree about Subaru Outback touchscreen as a distraction and not user friendly. ('20 Outback). So I like driving our basic '10 Mazda 3 sedan for it's driving dynamics and simplicity.
I have this in the Meridian Edition in Polymetal grey with the terracotta interior and I have been stopped multiple times by someone telling me how beautiful of a car it is. I have a CX-5 before I bought this and I'm impressed everyday with the CX-50. I absolutely love it. I don't mind the screen being set back because for me it keeps me from reaching for it.
CX owner here. I’ve had it for about 4 months now and 4K miles on it. Mine is turbo with most of features. Love almost everything but the seats .. they are very uncomfortable and have a middle stitching that looks pretty but feels horrible. In the winter is tolerable but on warmer months with less clothing, it is a nightmare. My girlfriend drives my old 2008 audiQ4 yesterday I sat on it and feels much more comfortable. Back on my cx50 seat really lowers the driving experience . Stereo system is glitchy on Apple car. I miss the radio station dial.
Ever since Mazda announced that they were working on an inline six and a rear wheel drive platform, I have been saying the same thing that Thomas said. If they make a Mazda6, preferably wagon, RWD with a 300hp I6, that is the perfect BMW. 11/10 would buy.
me too...especially if it looks anything like the Vision concept that Mazda came out with....take my money!
Facts, BMW dynamics and feel with Jap reliability and better looks, perfect recipe
Sorry, they said a year ago they canceled the 6.
Just traded our cx5 for 2023 cx50 and front grill is fantastic. Cladding just makes it cool looking
I drove BMWs for decades. Bought a 2017 Mazda 3, upgraded to a 2018 Mazda CX-5 and now purchased a 2023 CX-5 Carbon Edition. Love my CX-5 and the Sky-active AWD which is standard now along with G-vectoring make for a fun drive. My brother has the 2023 CX-50.
Such a great little SUV with some VERY strange flaws. They’re not even flaws, really. More like quirks. Although the seat being uncomfortable is a bit of a deal breaker for most people, but the steering and handling is just sublime.
Nowadays cars are so sterile and vanilla - inoffensive by design. I respect that Mazda is sticking to its guns and giving consumers cars that are quirky, but good.
@@steveroe7083 Totally agree. I’m thankful Mazda exists to provide us with compelling options.
James said the seat was good on bumps and rough roads...so not always uncomfortable.
I don't understand why they didn't just put the Mazda 3 seats into the CX-50
If the 50's seats are like the 5's I just could not like the seats less. All set to buy one, until I sat and drove in it. Felt like I was sitting on the bolsters. It's not just Mazda seats, I was ok in the 6
Mazda in general nailed the move from hydraulic to electric powered steering better than pretty much any other manufacturer. Their steering it absolutely fantastic.
Steering feel is literally why I own a Mazda. That and the sexy exterior styling and nice interiors.
@@brassrox I’ve strongly considered getting one, but I drive 64 miles minimum a day and it would cost me $350/month more to own than the EV I own, which is also a lot more luxurious. But that steering is fantastic.
I just think the Mazda steering is a bit too hard. Loosen a tad so you can have more free movement
I can totally agree with the steering comment. Im an owner of the CX30 turbo and the way that little cuv hoots and scoots thru traffic/backroads is hella fun!… and in the snow its a blast! Dont get me started when that turbo kicks in 🔥
Gentlemen, greetings from Florida. Two weeks ago (November 28, 2022) I leased my fourth Mazda, a 2023 CX-50 Preferred Plus, Soul Red Crystal Metallic (my three previous Mazdas were also this color). This replaced my 2020 CX-5 FWD Touring ,which had previously replaced my 2018 CX-5 AWD Touring, which had replaced my 2016 Mazda3 hatchback Touring 2.0. All of these are non-turbo, yet I find that they have plenty of power for acceleration and passing. You just have to be willing to mash the accelerator, and also to remember to use the MiDrive mode select to Sport mode (like you had your test car in this video - the red highlights on the dash gives it away). As for comparing the CX-5 and CX-50, there are some differences, but I'm getting used to them. I don't find the change is suspension is bad, I do like the longer interior space, and I have no problem with headroom (I'm 5'11"). I also love the steering and handling in the CX-50.
As for the seats, I did notice something. Before deciding to lease the CX-50 Preferred Plus, I took a test drive in the CX-50 Premium Plus. The seats are different between the two trims, with the Preferred Plus having a combination cloth/leather (half leatherette trimmed), while the Premium Plus has leather trimmed seats. I found that the seats in the Premium Plus were not as comfortable as in the Preferred Plus. There was just something wrong in how my rear end felt in the seats in the Premium Plus, which I don't find in my Preferred Plus.
In the old days, when the steering had weight and feel, you could actually feel the grip going away when the steering became lighter. This was very apparent in snow. Even driving slowly in the snow you could feel the steering was lighter. Light fake, disconnected steering is awful. Thanks for the review guys!
YES. North of the 48th (ish), hydraulic steering columns give you pointers in the snow. Since 2006 I've had a 2000 Maxima, a 2006 G35x and a 2013 G37x sedan I got in 2016 & still drive today w/ 183,000 km on the odometer. Haven't looked back since the '06 G, I very much enjoy the hydraulic steering / NA V6 / rear-biased AWD combo up here.
I'm 44 & love to drive & have owned anything from a C6 Corvette, BMW X5, M3, 2 Door Wrangler and a ton of others.... MAZDA is, IMO the BEST every day car money SHOULD buy and my favorite vehicle I'veever owned is a 2022 CX5 Carbon Turbo.
If they revive the RX Sports car line, I will get one. I have held off on a C8 Vette in hopes Mazda dives back into the sports car market with a serious performer.
I'm driving the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus all week. The steering is near-perfect. Not too heavy at all. One-handed driving and parallel parking with no issues at all. Great coverage, guys. You're the best on the web.
i do have to say i went from a 2018 civic si and i just bought a mazda3 turbo awd carbon edition and for the money i have so much more fun driving the car and it’s just so much bang for the buck. Mazda really has succeeded competing with performance vehicles for half the money yet not lacking any luxury or performance. Underrated car company
I own a CX50 and you guys are spot on with everything. I love this car however I just wish it's Lane keeping assistance was a little better but everything else is good or amazing
I bought one off this review. Thanks guys. It’s the most fun car I’ve driven since my eclipse in 2000.
Thomas statements on the steering was what sold me and the rugged looks. It’s nice to have fun driving again.
What color did you get and how are you liking it a year later?
8k miles on our cx50 preferred plus, absolutely love it! We like the steering, it’s perfect as a daily. 32mpg and plenty of pep. Don’t miss the ‘20 forester sport we had prior to the cx50, Mazda blows Subaru out of the picture. No CVT and a true 6 speed dual clutch auto is a big bonus!
It's not a dual clutch auto, it has a torque converter.
I stumbled across this video and appreciate the canter and banter from both of you. From a car enthusiast perspective you guys hit a lot of good notes and now the only thing left to do is go test drive one! Thanks so much for the video.
@7:50 Thomas speaks the most truth that any automotive journalist has ever spoken.
People are being treated like idiot children. And I hate it.
Just bought a 2019 CX-5 for my folks, and I'm so impressed by it. It's just the 2.0L manual and so good to drive. The Forester, Rav4 etc can't touch it.
The steering is very nice (probably not as nice as the 50 by the sounds of it) but the manual shift is weighted like a sports car. It's so good.
I've had a 2015 cx5 and it was a great city vehicle. We just got the cx50 non turbo and love it. We're more in the country now, and it LOVES gravel and back roads. It eats them up and seems to really enjoy the banks and curves. Perfect road trip vehicle.
I got a CX 50 a few weeks ago and I only have 2 complaints really. If I turn on the ac I can’t see the light indicating that it’s actually on. And the seat belt alarm is incredibly loud. It’s not a car for everyone like they say but I really like it
Absolutely love my CX-50. Yes, it is a strengthened, beefed up CX-5. The steering is incredible and it feels so much more connected.
That’s a great review of cx 50. I also want Mazda to bring back Mazda Mazda 6 with inline 6 and rear wheel drive
I'm glad I stumbled on this video, I'm a dad of 2 who owned 4 bmw for its driving feel. I've now sold the bmw thinking my driving enjoyment days are done, time to get a SUV. Sounds like this CX-50 is perfect for me.
Literally listening to this video as I drive my CX 50 on the freeway I completely agree I love the handling I love everything about it the torque and this is coming from a girl my first car was a 98 Mustang
I have one, non turbo engine, and it is just fun to drive! Plus you get off road capability and lots of trunk space by folding the rear seats down if you need it. With seats up, it will hold golf clubs and gear. Yes it steers a little heavy but I'm a man, I can handle it. This car hugs the road, no body roll what so ever while cornering and the all wheel drive system makes it quite nimble. Again, the CX-50 is just fun to drive.
I so love the steering!!!! Just smokes every corner with confidence ❤ And it has to be the best looking CUV in its segment. Even beats a few luxury brands on looks and steering experience.
Mazda tech is fantastic. It is just the right amount. The non touchscreen high up and far away but in view high is perfect.. No one needs to have a touch screen in a car. The heads up display is also fantastic in the CX50.
The screen is touch but only when stopped or parked.
6:55 That's EXACTLY the point. THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO USE IT WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING! How is this so hard for car journos to understand?! You SHOULDN'T be FORCED to use a touchscreen and look at it while driving. That's what the dial and the PHYSICAL volume button/knob are for!
I got a CX-50 the week they launched in the US. It’s my favourite car by a long shot. Coming from a Model 3 in Australia - Mazdas quality, refinement and much better looks is so appreciated.
Plus I reckon that Bose system is better than good. Crank that system up and it’s even and controlled at high volumes, no rattle, no distortion. Tech is what it needs to be at this stage - I’ve not been in a non-luxury car that does digital systems particularly well - id rather opt for function and reliability over flashy tech that doesn’t work all the time.
Overall - brilliant car. However I do wish their lane centering was better and low speeds and available at above 40mph…
Just took our cx50 from PA to Orlando and I totally agree with the steering its just to damn heavy and don’t get me started with the seats. The seats are terrible trust me your butt will feel the burn after 2 hours of driving I had to lift my butt up a couple times to relieve the pain it was the worst road trip ever. We really missed our cx5 sig but since it got totaled we thought we tried the cx50 bad choice we should have gotten another cx5 sig.
Weird that the seats are uncomfortable...the seats in my 2022 Mazda 3 are super comfy for road trips.
@@brassrox yes I’m not sure why they made it so stiff also the build quality is not as good as the cx5. The doors rattle when you shut it kinda like a tin can sound I’m very disappointed I think it’s the joint venture with Toyota.
Just bought a used CX-5 mainly as as I was pleasantly suprised how well it drives, especially for a crossover. This highlights something I obverve in myself -- car enthusiasts seem to exist on a continuum. One one extreme, are people who are way more interested in the car itself. Imagine the boomer Corvette owner stereotype -- someone who loves the car, but really doesn't drive it that hard (or that much). On the other extreme, are driving enthusiasts, who care a lot more about the art of driving -- whether it's slowly and smoothly or as quickly as possible. They like the challenge of getting the most out of whatever they are driving. I think Mazdas as a whole all care about driving enthusiasts, even when it's a crossover, which is why I've owned more Mazdas than any other marque. That used to be true of German cars too, but that ere seems to be coming to a close.
If you are primarily a car enthusiast, giving the CX-50 excellent steering makes no sense as no "performance" driver wants a crossover. But, if you are primarily a driving enthusiast, it makes perfect sense as it allows you to get the most out of the vehicle no matter how you are driving it. I love my CX-5, but I'm closer to the driving enthusiast end of the spectrum! I don't care that it's a mom-mobile -- I just love how it goes, stops and steers.
I wanted to love the cx50 but here in Colorado at 6,000ft the Turbo engine becomes mandatory as the base engine is dangerously slow for merging into traffic
We live in a canyon, and we daily drive a canyon highway for our commute. We are a family of car enthusiasts, but we live in a snowy location and have a 5yo. This seems like the perfect vehicle for us. However, I fully recognize that we are a highly niche need that will not amount to many sales... so be it. I love the CX-50.
I purchased a CX-50 a few months ago and absolutely love it for all the reasons stated in the video. I came from a BMW but wanted something practical without spending a lot of money and this fit the bill. The driving experience is so much better than anything else I tested. The quirkiness of the entertainment system has grown on me. I'm actually quite surprised at how much I really love the car. I think I just happen to fit into that niche profile they described - but I couldn't be happier with it. FYI - I have the same specs/color as the one in video - best red in the biz.
Wow, Mazda is getting quite a few BMW owners to crossover...no pun intended. I'm a little surprised.
@@differencemaker242yes because Mazda vehicles are based off of BMW but cheaper and reliable. The 50 is the X3/X4
I rewarded myself with a CX-50 Turbo premium in zircon sand/terracotta.
This Mazda checks all the right boxes if you need utility but are a driving enthusiast.
Always look forward to my next drive.
@4:28 agreed. I never would have expected it but the steering feedback in my ma's 2019 cx5 turbo is by far the best I've ever felt from an electric rack (tbf I've tried a lot but not Porsche yet)
We have a CX-30, love the weighted steering, non-touch screen, and interior. The non- turbo engine is not anemic, at least in the smaller CX-30. Recently sat in two versions of the CX-50 and both were great, haven’t driven one yet.
I remember when I worked at Mazda I owned a Miata that was used for autocross and it had incredible steering.
I got into the CX-5’s and Mazda 3’s and I thought “the steering is pretty good”. I didn’t realize how good they really were until I compared them to any other competitor
I test drove this vehicle and felt that the pickup on the base engine was lacking. The turbo engine is the way to go with the CX-50, but it will increase the price. I personally did not notice anything exceptional with the steering, but driving the turbo felt responsive & nimble.
I was very apprehensive of this review as I have one on order that should be coming in March, but this settles it. This car just feels so special to drive. Nevermind the seats that are weirdly uncomfortable, nevermind the cheaper plastics. I have a 2021 Mazda3 and I was anxious to see if this SUV would live up to it, and it really does.
You’re gonna love this car! I got my cx50 back in April and absolutely love it!! Which trim are you getting?
Until you have to sit on the seat every day.
@@Magsbravo Soul Red Crystal, GT Turbo. We currently have two 2021 Mazda3 GT, a manual and an AWD. This is a good compromise between the fun I experienced with the manual, and the stability of the AWD.
@@psunitro1 It really isn’t as bad as they are saying it is. I’ve driven cars with far worse seats.
@@pheliixm I understand it's subjective. I was ready to buy, but I just could not get over the seats. I'm not a wide framed guy, but they were the deal breaker. It's not Mazda, as I am fine with the 6 seats, it was the 5's seats.
I just really love James he just seems like such a genuinely nice guy. Thomas is a car enthusiast and I respect it. I’ve learned a lot about cars and ones that I didn’t think would be a good fit. ✨
The CX-50 is an advert for the gym. If you can't single hand a wheel with some weighting you will have issues! I single finger mine on the heaviest setting - makes up for no gf.
🤣
I just drove 1400 miles in a CX5 and it begs to be driven. I love the feel of contact with the road through the steering wheel. our Honda Accord has that same contact with the road, but the CX5 is dialed in even more. It's also comfortable in both front seats. The thing that sells me is that they are made in Japan, not in the states. The Japanese just care more about their work than Americans.
its the same plant that makes toyota corolla cross overs. I think toyota has it down.
"This feels like a baby Macan." Exactly. A poor man's Porsche. That's why I bought it. No other cookie-cutter competitor drives anything else like it, especially with 18-inch Wildpeak a/ts, or matches its looks, inside and out.
I have a Mazda 3 2018 and when I test drove it, the steering is what made me fall in love with it! Looking into getting this one next and this video probably made it a definite decision.
I drove this and settled on the CX-5, I find it looks much sportier and the suspension is better on windy roads. I live on a windy rural road and Mazda crossovers have no business feeling as good as they do lol. We didn't need the extra space or 'rugged' appearance since our other vehicle is a 4x4 truck we use overlanding and camping.
Now every time I swipe a credit card I'm going to think of the CX-50.
Now that's clever marketing!
I'm picking up my Meridian this afternoon.
I had a Mini Cooper S some years ago, and I've craved the feeling that delivered since. I was in the CX-50 for all of 12 seconds before I said aloud "This feels just like my old Mini".
The steering is exactly how I wish every car felt, regardless of size or utility.
Mazda is so good at thinking through their cars except their seats. My 2021 cx5 seats are really uncomfortable, especially on long trips
Agreed. I have a 2017 Mazda 6 and the seats are very uncomfortable on long trips 😕
I bought one earlier one in April and man take this bad boy and a curvy highway and put it in sport and you just can't help but smile
I got my wife a 2019 cx5 signature for most of the reasons thomas gave lol. Its the most sporty feeling crossover. The 2.5 turbo is faster than it has any right to be, the heavy steering is phenomenal, the mpg is alright, the transmission is incredible in comparison to a cvt or the old dry 7 speed dct from kia. The technology is slow but it works well, the bose sound system is incredible, thr double pane windows are really nice and make the interior super quiet, its honestly one of the best cars ive ever owned. It could be alot better, like the mpg, the awd system, the slow tech, ect. Its a car that has every feature but isnt necessarily the best at any of them, but at sub 30k for a used one with 9k miles, it was a steal honestly. Hell of an upgrade from our old kia soul turbo
what do you mean by slow tech? I've never seen anyone complain about the new Mazda infotainment being slow
@@silimarina. ive heard great things about the recent ones but the 2019 takes a good couple minutes before its fully usable lol. It doesnt lag or anything once it starts up though, its just that initial wait every single time u start up the car that gets a little annoying.
new CX50 owner in wind chill peart (actually awesome color, in the right lighting looks almost like a matte finish that sparkles) - steering is great, don't notice the 'heaviness' at all, also drive 2004 VW Passat, which had quite heavy steering, and BMW 330 MSport Sportwagen, usually in sport mode, the CX50 is great, steering and handling of sport oriented sedan, but utility of the segment. interesting review, my wife and I both liked this MUCH better than rav4, crv, etc., probably coming from the old VW and BMW, this is more comfortable for us, BMW is super stiff so CX50 feels really nice.
You guys are the funnest car reviewers on TH-cam by a long way! Well done. 😊
Bought a CX50 a week ago, I love the sharp yet rugged exterior, and the luxurious feel to the interior. To me, the seats are very comfortable. But I must admit, I’m having trouble with the steering. I’ve never experienced such heavy/tight steering, and it just feels unnatural to me. I’m trying to figure out if I genuinely dislike it or if I’m just not used to it. Anyone out there who initially didn’t like the steering but eventually learned to love it? I’d be interested in your perspective
Great steering is welcomed in any car. The steering feel in my latest car is one of the reasons I got it. You get used to the heaviness and don't notice it after a while. While with numb steering you always notice it.
When we were in the market for a three row SUV, the CX-9 was a no-brainer after driving a few options. Not as much space as, say a VW Atlas, but it drives beautifully, feels special, looks great, and I still look forward to getting behind the wheel. Love what Mazda is doing lately.
I wonder, from a control standpoint, if having firmer steering like this makes it a better car during emergency situations. I've seen so many SUVs in emergency situations where the drive panics and/or over-corrects and it creates a really bad situation, many times resulting in rollover or cars going way out of control. I get it that it's hard to live with day to day, as I had the similar situation with my X3 M40i. But it seems to be better suited for SUV drivers from a control standpoint. It forces two hands on the wheel, even during highway driving.
You guys are the best reviewers out there.
Nobody makes it more fun to watch car reviews than you 2 !
I love the weighted feeling of the steering on my CX-5. It feels so good and makes a crossover fun to drive. Which is ridiculous.
Yes, I agree such a handsome car! I’ve test driven CX-50 twice now but visibility isn’t great for me due to high belt line I guess? CX-5 fits me better so it’s a joy to drive! I do like driving both these Mazdas but I don’t own either.
CX-50 is the badass SUV.
I remember reading an article where the write said the only other SUV that handles better is a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. I'm proud to build this car in Huntsville, Alabama.
Can tell you that the “immediacy” you feel off the line is present in the 2.5 non turbos as it’s more down to the throttle and transmission tuning. You’ll get more power with turbos obviously but at low commuting speeds you wouldn’t notice.
I think it also helps that it is a 2.5 rather than the standard 2.0
I just bought a 2024 CX50 base model. I love it!
Credit where deserved, well done, earlier this year i went in dealers with only 2 choices in mind, CX-50 or CX-5, i ended up choosing the 5 turbo loaded, love it. its the best of everthing you said... and honestly if you redrive the facelifted one, its funny that it pretty much addresses your only complaints about the 50 haha! I am now the proud owner of 40/20/40 ;) '22 Signature.
I've been a fan of Mazda for years, since the days of the 2000s 'zoom zoom' commercials. My first car belonged to the fourth gen mazda sedan design and feel.. loved it!
My family&friends eventually caught on to the japenese influence (cx-5's , 3 sedan , etc) . I cannot see myself jumping ship, as I now have a cx-9. WAY TOGO MAZDA
I've owned about 40 cars in the last 4 years. I love the CX50. Let's be real, this drives well. It's very practical. This is a good competitor to the Outback. I hear tiny nitpicking. Realistically, for 50 grand, this rocks. I find the interior very pleasing. It's devoid of nonsense. I'm a practical person. I prefer well made, reliable cars. They claim it's worse suspension. It's more reliable than a complicated multilink on dirt roads. If you compare it to a live axle, it's way better handling. I think these two are acting a bit spoiled and missed the point here. I just sold Pacific Mazda my 100th anniversary MX5 GT RF, I'll get another, likely NE or Nissan Z manual.
Tested a bunch of CUVs in this range and while the CX50 does drive well and is a pretty fun car with the turbo, it is not as refined as most Mazdas today. This car was for the wife and she chose a Signature CX5, as it's quiet and a bit more comfortable than the CX50. The CX50 is a great looking car, we were smitten with it at first.
I love the abrupt endings to these😂But no, when I get a daily I'll for sure look into Mazda, especially since their steering will match how my E92 steering feels.
I want to put out there that the steering is heavy but by no means hard to do, anyone who says otherwise is being dramatic. My mom recently bought a cx50 and she’s a 57 yo woman with chronic rheumatoid arthritis and she’s never complained once about it, and yes she lives in Toronto. It’s not one finger steering, but it’s not weighty to the point of being a chore, it’s a matter of preference.
