Unbelievable that none of the other huge car channels here on You Tube never figured out that this is the actual concept of a car review. It is not the snapshot of a scenery drive in a new car with a talking head quoting from the brochure, it is this that has the useful information. This guy should copyright his execution- he really is on to something here. Love it
That’s the difference when an ACTUAL mechanic who ACTUALLY does understand cars, is doing the review! The only car channel that I care to watch. AMD hats to the floor 👏🏻
That's what really made me consider a Mazda for my next daily driver car. Either a cx5 or a mazda will probably be my next purchase. I just do not like the way cvt's drive
A key reason for my switching from Honda to Mazda. I've had a CX-30 since July 2020 and have had no problems. Love the simple 4-cylinder without any need for a turbo.
@@Spork123able heck yes. Goes like stink. Remember, an Audi TT from just a few years ago had the same power and AWD. It's a little heavier but still goes like stink.
Every time I see you giving high praise to a non-Toyota car, I get a big smile on my face and a huge sense of satisfaction - not because I don’t like Toyota’s, not because I know that Toyota is not the only company deserving respect, but for the fact that it proves yet again how genuine and honest person you are and you’re staying on the side of the truth vs playing brand loyalty at all costs 🙂
I mean, Toyota does partially own Mazda nowadays🤷 they build cars together in their new joint factory in Alabama. The CX-50 will have a Rav4 hybrid powertrain coming later this year.
Why would he play brand loyalty? Because he worked a Toyota dealer? What you say makes no sense. Only a clown would do that. Does AMD look like a clown to you?
Toyota ain't looking so go now that most Tundras have been recalled with no fix available, they got caught cheating of certification, or Tacomas made in Mexico where pay is $2.50/hr , have quality control issues and have jacked their price up ~ 10K over the last gen.
Highly overrated, like all Mazdas. The paint chips and scratches if you look at it wrong. The seats are massively uncomfortable. Poor efficiency/economy compared to others. Feels like a tin can.
@@huehuehueha hater for sure. Their seats are for those who don't want their ass to fall asleep on long rides. The paint chips on all new cars because of environmental standards, and Mazda is probably the only manufacturer that comes close to real world mpg vs the over exaggerated ratings from the likes of Hyundai, GM, Nissan, and a lot more. And mazdas use more real steel compared to others. Hence their safety ratings being better than 99% of other manufacturers. Go pay an extra 30k for a lexus if you want more sound deadening. Because that's all you're really getting from the price difference unless you go hybrid.
My wife is still driving a 2013 CX-5, 82K miles. No problems ever. I try to talk her into getting a new car since the CX-5 will be 12 years old in November, but she is not interested. She loves that car!
Our second car is a 2013 CX-5 also, first edition with the smaller 155HP engine. 109k miles zero issues. Kinda sluggish but great on gas, handles really well and just and all round easy car to live with.
I bought mine (non-turbo) 10 hours ago after watching a lot of reviews, including a prior one from TCCN. This one makes me even happier about my choice.
@@ChicagoRob2 Actually, my wife leased a CX-90 at a dealership that just opened up. A CX-5 caught my eye and I ended up buying one. We traded in a Kia Telluride and a Kia Seltos. It’s been 2 days and we’re off to a fine start!
Mazda's attention to detail and their dedication to small updates are unmatched. Even as an owner of 2023 CX-5, I still noticed a lot of small updates they did for the 2024 model when I was at the dealership, for example the indicator/wiper stocks are much better dampened and feels more premium in the 2024 model, the stitchings are better to touch compare to the 2023 model (same trim), the door armrest is softer etc... Most car companies don't care about updating QoL stuff until a full refresh, but Mazda improve stuff constantly. The build quality on these CX-5s are fantastic, not a single rattle even when driving on washboard road and everything feels rock solid, cabin is well insulated, way quieter compare to RAV4, CR-V, Bose sound system is A-tier. For the money you pay for, this is a close to Lexus level car for sure. I love it!
Agree 100%. We got a TSB from our dealer about flashing the transmission with an updated file for improved shifting. We took the car in, had the new file uploaded, and ended up with a better shifting transmission.
@@user-3tf67bk46u The transmission in our 2019 CX-5 is excellent, especially after it was reflashed. Downshifting is very positive for every gear. My car is a ‘17 Camry SE and its 6-speed transmission feels lazy, by comparison. My only criticism of the CX-5 is the suspension tuning, which was mentioned in the review. The car does handle better than its competition, but it’s a little too sensitive, to be honest. This is where my Camry takes the lead, since its suspension is virtually flawless. The car is very responsive, but still very smooth. In this regard, Toyota is tops in its class.
Mostly agree, but let's not exaggerate, Mazda repositioned as premium more than a decade ago, in between the Lexus (luxury) and Toyota (upper mass market), it is not that close to Lexus.
Even the rear passenger safety got improved. Mazda always improved their safety faster than others when they got bad results from IIHS. That is what separates them from others.
Purchased my wife a CX-5 for all of the reason you pointed out in this video. A few observations from my daily use of the vehicle. First off...the button on the door handle is EXCELLENT and I love it. I have a car that has the touch sensor to lock and unlock. If you have the key in your pocket while washing it, it locks and unlocks constantly making it necessary to locate the key away from the car. No issue with that on the Mazda. Ours is a non-turbo and the fuel economy is really good for an SUV. My wife commutes in rush hour stop and go and regularly clocks 27mpg. That is REALLY good for sitting in urban traffic. On long highway drives, we easily get over 30mph. While it's not fast, it has adequate power. You won't win any races, but you won't have any issues getting up to speed in traffic or pulling out on a busy street. The other gripe I hear a lot about is the multimedia control knob. In 2024, the screen is a touchscreen for Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto if you enable it. But once you get used to using the knob, you won't use the touchscreen anymore. My wife LOVES the controller. Having the controller and volume control right below your hand while your elbow is on the armrest is perfect. If you like to do your own maintenance (as I do), Mazda has rewarded you again. No need to remove a bunch of screws and fasteners to remove a big lower cover. Mazda has a small access door you can easily remove and the drain plug and filter are right there. So nice! We're very impressed with the car and plan on keeping it for a long time.
Excellent point. Sometimes when I’m hand washing my other car with the touch sensors on both sides of the door handle, I use the door handles to brace myself while washing with the other hand. Anyway it’s constantly locking/unlocking my doors. LOL. Also sometimes the spray from a wand wash also trips those sensors. I have no problems with the CX5 button.
Subaru has a little door/flap you can remove or rotate to get to the oil drain plug and the newer models have the oil filter on top of the engine which makes oil changes a breeze. But, you are stuck with a CVT with most Subarus. 😕
And btw this review, and your entire reviews, is what a car review should be. Not stupid general talking about things we already can see but rather the “under the hood”. It’s so appreciated man. Very much admired and respect thank you!
Wjm: the start stop button is the worst idea , theyve ever come up with! First of all, i have watched many mechanic videos, They say, this feature DOES NOT SAVE ON GAS AND IT RUINS THE STARTER & other things connected to the starter! Its a LOSE LOSE!!! THANK GOD, mazda, has a TURN OFF BUTTON!!! For the start stop!! 👍👏🏻
Once you've experienced what it's like when this touch sensor on the door handles doesn't work, you'll quickly understand why Mazda sticks to buttons....it's the same with the foot swing sensor...to open the tailgate... comedy when you watch a BMW driver when it doesn't work....Mazda doesn't offer this with the CX-5 for a reason. Great channel-I love it and follow it regularly...keep it up....owner of Mazda CX-5 2022 2.5L 194 horses AWD...greetings from Slovenija🇸🇮
I'm glad you said this! My 2021 Ford Explorer XLT drives me crazy with this. It has the touch sensor on all doors, but if I'm not standing close enough to the vehicle, I'll pull on the handle, and nothing happens. Drives me NUTS!
The problem with Mazda is the CX-5 is the only model that uses the push button on the door handle. My Mazda 3 has the touch sensor which doesn't always work.
@@billetherington8849that's the advanced keyless entry system. If you have the fob on you or in your pocket, it should be easy to unlock/lock the vehicle. To unlock, simply put your hand behind the handle and the door will unlock. To lock the door, you have 3 lines at the top end of the handle, just put your finger on top and the door will lock. As for the one button lock on the cx-5, that makes it easy to get in and or lock the door. After time, of repeated use, the button will wear out and the handle will need to be replaced.
For the cylinder deactivation and i-stop, they were never available on the 2.5 turbo in any model. They removed it from the naturally aspirated model just to simplify and consolidate parts... a very welcome change!
I've owned Mazdas since 1986, and the CX-5 drives like a Mazda. If you've driven Mazdas, you'll know what that means. It's not perfect, but in its class, to me, the driving dynamics are preferable. It's not the biggest, not the cheapest, not the newest, and others may top it in certain categories, etc, but it's back to the Mazda of old, and that's a good thing.
@@huehuehueh maybe not as nice driving as a X3 but WAY more reliable, lower cost of maintenance, cheaper to insure and will hold up better over the long run. BMW quality has improved but it started with a very low base. Having owned and driven both the Mazda holds up quite well in comparison. And, my MX5 way outlasted my BMW roadster Z3. The z3 was faster on a straightline but subpar on curves. Dumped it at lease end.
@@wadesouza6402 I owned a 2022 CX-5 Turbo Signature for 2yr. It was mediocre and problematic. I lemoned it. BMW is actually the most reliable brand these days, according to Consumer Reports, anyways.
@@huehuehueh I don't know about that with bmw? I've been researching vehicles for over a month and read alot and lexus is #1 from what i've read. Mazda is in the top 3 also along with acura. The rav 4 has the cvt transmission and didn't include that junk.
He didn’t mention how incredibly quiet the cabin is due to the way Mazda engineered the windshield and windows. It is the quietest car I’ve ever driven, bar non.

Wish THEY would produce the cx 5 with RWD. I would go and get one immediately.
Out of Mazda at the moment but have owned three (3) in the past (1-3 series and 2-6 series). Maybe heading back soon as I am taking a hard look at the CX-70. Mazda is only Japanese car company I will consider buying. They make great cars.
If you don’t want a hybrid, the Mazda CX5 is the best small SUV for the price. It’s like a luxury car (quiet, great interior, nice ride) at a normal car price. Plus it’s been around so long it’s reliable like a Toyota. I would not do the turbo.
Only cons besides what’s stated in video; the fuel tank is small, when I filled up when light turned red was about 12 gallons; and with the driver mirror after you fold it in and unfold it, the angle of the mirror is not the same as what you set it with
I have the non turbo 2019 CX-5 while adequate it can feel underpowered at times. I also have a 2020 Mazda 6 with the turbo engine and I must say that turbo puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.
The door button is priceless. By habit I double check the car is locked by pulling the handles. I can’t do that if it’s touch sensor, which would unlock the doors inadvertently. Old habits die hard.
I bought my first CX5 a 2013 with the 2.0 engine, in2012. I drove it almost 10 yrs and had my first problem at 213,000 miles. #3 coil went out so I replaced all 4 coil packs. Mass airflow sensor went out at 221000 miles. Minor issues but the transmission was starting to go so I decided to trade it in on a 2021 non turbo and it has almost 50,000 miles so far so good. Due to the advanced technology over the basic 2013 cx5 I am not expecting to have so few problems but time will tell. I would recommend the Cx5 for reliability and low cost to maintain.
I bought my 2024 CX-5 Turbo Carbon edition earlier this month. It looks exactly like the one in the video. I traded in my 2021 Mercedes Benz GLA250 for it. I had traded in my 2013 Mazda 3 for the Benz. My Mazda 3 had no major issues for the 6 years I had it, and I bought it used with no warranty in 2016 lol The GLA wound up having the dreaded, known cylinder head issue at only 34K miles, so after I got the cylinder head replaced under warranty, I decided to go back to Mazda. I don't feel like I made a step down. The CX-5 has features my GLA didn't, but without costing an arm, leg, and spleen.
I own a 2012 Glk350, that particular year was made In Germany and I love it, but I hate the high maintenance cost. Mazda is my next car also...thanks for the post...
I have a 2022 CX-5 non-turbo. I absolutely love this car. Not super tech-heavy, but just enough modern features. Reliable engine and transmission. Fun to drive. Glad to see you review it, sir! The 2024 seems even nicer, good job Mazda.
I purchased a 2024 CX-5 about 6 weeks ago. This is my first Mazda and I am really happy with it. If you're shopping around I strongly suggest you check out a Mazda. It may surprise you.
The CX-5 looks more modern than the new RAV4 and CRVs despite being 3-4 years older in design. The CX-5 probably won't look dated until another 5 years later, it's looks was just designed well
it will be a classic SUV people still will want to buy... Like MAC Laptops from Apple... if it is well done from the beginning, why to drastically change it? 😊
Driving a 180 000 km 2016 model. This thing is absolutely rock solid. No issues in ~7 years of ownership except the usual wear and tear. I hope to keep it at least another 4 year and then maybe buy another CX-5, who knows?! Might be a bit on the small side for some, but it's been perfect for our family of four.
@@huehuehueh From what I understand, the issue is the supply chain for an electronic part meaning that they all have the mechanical lifter assembly that allows cyclinder deactivation but not the electronics that makes it function. So the potential expensive failure mode is still there. I still do not understanding how Mazda can eliminate a component that is part of the EPA fuel economy certification. And if it does not affect fuel economy, why did they include it in the first place?
@@felipemunoz4177 Can a manufacturer eliminate a fuel saving device after they certify the fuel economy based on that device being installed and working?
I appreciate Mazda for changing things that people don’t like. Like the cylinder deactivation and stop start. I also appreciate them for not going CVT.
I had the 2014 CX-5 for 10 years and never had any issues. We only traded it in because we needed more room for camping and an additional seat for Grandma. Now we have the 2023 CX-9 Signature.
AMD, You must really like the CX-5 because this is the third time you have reviewed one since you launched this channel. 😉😂 We can ALL agree the 42/20/40 rear seat is a highly useful feature which has disappeared from too many cars. Kudos to Mazda for doing such a good job with the rear seat.🙌🙌
One of the things that caught my attention about the CX5 was that it didn't have the engine stop feature. This was a great review and I learned a lot about my car from your review of the engine!
When i was a teen my my mom had a protege 5 4wd and that was the first car i started driving, since i was born the only brand cars my parents bought were mazda's but sadly i bought mitsubishi and now toyota
Just yesterday I bought normally aspirated CX 5 and I'm wondering if you've had any direct injection carbon buildup problems and if so how did you solve said problem? Thanks.
@davidmills2721 My naturally aspirated 2016.5 CX-5 has had no carbon buildup issues. I've only got a bit over 60k on it but it still runs like new. The best way to clear any carbon from the intake valves on any car is either dry ice or walnut shell blasting. I don't believe I'll need to do that on this car anytime soon.
Mazda! They do it right! Love how Mazda does their own thing and not follow the cheap trends. NO CVT!! Driving dynamics! And.... QUALITY WORKMANSHIP!! Can't say this about the other Japanese cars... Great review!
I own a Mazda cx30 with the X engine and it is the best car i have ever owned. I use to criticize my own vehicles but this time i am just impressed how smooth, quite and fun to drive Mazda cx30 is. I came from a bmw 5 series and i can only say that i am enjoying this Mazda more.
I bought a brand new Mazda 3 for my daughter in 2012 as high school graduation gift. She uses as her daily driver since. Long haul trips and short commute as well. It has over 120k miles on the odometer and never had any, any issues! Regular scheduled maintenance always at the local Mazda dealership and 1 new set of tires. That’s it! Again AMD, by far, the best car review channel on TH-cam! Simplicity and yet in-depth content! I always look forward to your reviews and other great content you post! “May the Lord bless you and keep you”🙏
I have a 2024 Mazda cx5 and I love it it’s my first car and it’s amazing to drive control and speed. Does give me good mileage as well. I am glad I bought this car
The CX-5 design is perfect, they really knocked it out the park, whether intentional or not. It's slightly over-built, more premium than it has any right to being, and good value at all trim levels, no nickel and diming. It's their version of the VW Beetle. Come up with a good design that you'd only ruin by changing, and just continuously update a bit of tech every year keep it relevant. I wish more companies would do this. It might not make sense on a brochure/spec sheet, but go sit in and drive and it makes sense.
@@mnwolves180I suggest keeping your '14 Mazda 3 as long as you can. I miss my '15 Mazda 3 Sedan, it was a more engaging car to drive than my current '22 Mazda 3 hatchback. I think the current Mazda 3 is a step backwards for Mazda.
@@billetherington8849 I completely agree. We have the 2023 CX5 Turbo and it is in no way as fun to drive as my 07 Mazda 3 5-speed was to drive. That car was nothing short of amazing and fun. I sold it with 144k miles and it still had the original clutch. I also think the 2011, 2012, and 2013 CX5's we test drove handled better than our 2023. Not sure what all they changed but the driving dynamics aren't quite as good.
I have owned 5 Mazdas in my lifetime along with some Hondas and Toyotas. All good cars, no doubt, but for the money I love my Mazdas the most. They drive and are styled more like German Cars, but are Uber reliable and very long lasting. Enjoying my brand new CX50 , after handing down my CX5. To my now adult daughter.
I just found you channel. I have watched 2 reviews already and I am impressed. You do a great job focusing on the real things and not subjective opinions. You focus on quality of build and intelligent design. Nothing foolish and no frills. Thank you. I have a 2011 cx7 N/A 2.5 and it is amazing. I bought it new, it has now 250k km's on it. The only maintenance and work that has been done is new tires, just put my 3rd battery in. 2md alternator, brakes done, and a solenoid in the gas tank that was $50 repair. It was built in Japan October 2010...14 years old, no body rust like some others, and drive very smooth. It won't win any races but no one wins sitting in commuter traffic. This cx5 is also built in Japan and I feel like that's a big selling feature. I want to drive my cx7 until it dies but I hope I don't miss out on a new cx5 like this one.
It’s a rock solid vehicle that is made in Japan. Mine is a 2018 premium package with 172k miles and no issues. Just the basic maintenance. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned and I’ve had Honda’s
Tip for CX-5 owners: in case you didn’t know, you can push in and hold the gear button while in Park with your foot on the brake; shut off the engine and the infotainment will remain on for 15 more minutes. No need to idle for a passenger running into a convenience store.
I'm right handed so doing that is a bit awkward. The computer knows how all the gears line up so you can also with your foot on the brake push the start button with it in gear and it will leave the infotainment on and then you can still easily put it into Park with it off.
We love our 2024 premium plus and everyone I talked to who owned one likes them too . Its like a little sports car and you don't need the turbo to have fun.
I totally agree. We bought the “S Select” 2.5 naturally aspirated car. Thankfully no I-stop or cylinder de-act in mine. 😂 It feels like a German-built chassis and is loads of fun to drive. It is, in fact, a “drivers car.”
I was looking at a CX-30, but between your review of that and the stellar review of this CX-5, I have to agree that this is a lot more car for just a little bit more cost. I appreciate the deep look at the mechanical side since I know nothing about that stuff, making me feel secure with this being a great vehicle to buy.
I got to test drive one.. cross shop with a few others like the NX, X3, Q5, XT5. The CX5 drove just so nice and smooth. Had a great pickup and had nice little details at all speeds that made me really like the experience. Just the way it drove alone was amazing and very satisfying and special feeling. Definitely one of my favorites
This is the car reviewer that helped a lot. I have never seen any other car reviewer here on TH-cam that shows the bottom part of the car. You’ll know which things to look out for, and he does not hold back👌🏼
While not pushing button when opening door is more convenient, being physically able to pull on the handle to make sure the car is locked is a huge plus in my book.
@The Car Care Nut Reviews: I ❤ this vehicle. Am currently looking at the Premium Plus trim as I do not want the turbo. EXCELLENT point on the lack of I-Stop and cylinder deactivation, I think this a wonderful thing as well!
Just bought a ‘24 turbo CX5 replacing my ‘18 non turbo CX 5. Still an amazing machine with significantly more acceleration. Now have Apple Car Play too. This is my seventh Mazda. Great value in the SUV world. Looked at CRV and RAV4. Mazda remains an easy choice.
Great channel, starts review where it should start - under the hood. Other channels distract with design, shiny interiors and checking infotainment or interior plastic but forget the important questions, how long its going to last, is it reliable, what are weak spots, how much for maintenance. Keep up the good work.
I had a 2019 CX-5 and my main concern with it was the block cracking (common more so on the 2018 with the first iteration of the cylinder deactivation). I also worried about the cylinder deactivation causing a potential issue. I sold it for a Toyota. If I didn’t have the cylinder deactivation on it, I would likely still have it. The driving feel of the Mazda is like no other in this price range. The interior is premium, the ride is smooth, yet sporty (for a crossover), and it was a tank in Michigan winters. Overall, seeing that the cylinder deactivation is gone… that’s appealing to get another one in the future!
My dad rented one of these for our yearly trip to our car show, I was flying going 90 on the highway feeling like it was 50…it was SO smooth and really peppy.
The technical insights from a service standpoint is what differentiates this channel from the rest of the driver or consumer centric reviews. Also appreciate the methodical diagnostic videos. Subbed!
Just traded a honda crv for a 24 mazda cx-5 select. Entry level but SO many more standard features than honda for about the same cost. Right size, drives great, quiet, simple design inside and out. Mazda has it together & no cvt. YES!!. Old school maybe, but don't fix what is no broke !! 🤔 I like it MUCH better than the honda. Always been a toyota/ honda person and this is my 1st mazda. Should have switched over long ago. 1 happy camper here. Loved this video, & helped me to decide on a mazda cx5 as is perfect for me😊. Thanks for the critique and info.
Mazda have been very wise not to change the styling too dramatically. I have a ten year CX-5, the styling of the newer ones just gets better and better (but clearly faithful to the original). Several other brands go too far cluttering up the bodywork and fittings/ lights with lines, creases and angles.
I hope it’s a buy. I have a 2021 with low mileage. Been great. I added a 24’ CX-5 last week! I think they are fun and dependable. No CVT and no Hybrid, and a reliable 6-speed. That’s enough for me. I believe it’s aged well like fine wine.
I have a 2020 Mazda cx5 with over 90 miles. I bought it brand new. Yes, I drive a whole lot. I never had any serious or even small issues with the car yet. It’s paid off so I will be keeping this car till it gives up on me.
The most detailed review of this car that I've seen and absolutely agree with your dislikes. Overall still a beautiful car to look at and drive. I love my cx5
my first car, exact the review model, same color, I can't describe how much I love the car, like I watched the whole video after owning the same for almost a year.
I'm so happy that I can buy Mazda's again. I stopped buying Mazda's in the early 1990's after Ford began to destroy the company. Last year I bought an MX-5 Miata. Next year I will buy a Mazda SUV.
I have this model car. The A pillars are not a problem. Maybe if you are short and sit up forward, the pillars may seem larger, but for normal height folks, the pillars are the same as any other car. I am pleased with this vehicle.
at the end of 2022 I bought a lightly used 2021 CX5 Signature Turbo. I had wanted a CX30 but it was still a 3-6 month wait because of supply issues. I am glad I got this CX5 instead of the CX30. One thing about the door handle you mention, I had it on my former 2016 Honda Civic. For the most part I liked it except when I washed the car. If I had the fob with me the act of washing kept activating the door unlock. Even standing 10 feet away and just using the hose would activate it. One cool thing I noticed about the CX5 is the door seals, the gap between the body and the door is sealed and even cooler is the bottom of the door, it actually wraps around underneath the car. I am on top of maintenance as I want this car to last. I like that the service interval is every 8000km or 6 months. The CX5 has ~43k km on it. Being retired I do not use it much but when I do it is always a longer trip. Most of the time at the 6month time frame I have only at most 6k on it from the last service.
As a 2020 cx5 owner a few points- 1. Small-ish range with turbo engine. 2. Radar cruise detects the vehicles stopped ahead but does not slow down sometimes, only beeps and warns. 3. Amazing headlights, adaptive lights have very good brightness and coverage. 4. Mazda NAV doesn't show some areas and updates still miss some new streets and out of city spots. GPS co-ordinates takes only 4 or 5 digits after decimal unlike Garmin which can take 2 or even 4 more digits. Garmin is much more accurate. 5. Handling and steering are amazing. Turbo engine has good power. 6. Highway driving. 100 kph just a hair above 2000 rpm. If it had 1 or 2 more gears, cruising would be even more quieter and fuel efficient. 7. If music is being played loud, you can see bass beats vibration on external rear view mirrors, they need more insulation or damping.
Car Care Nut is to me a Genius Master Technician. If I had a car company, I would hire him to advice how to advice the Engineers how to built a car. He has been under the hood and know what’s practical and could advice what’s over kill. He is my go to Master Tech . I’m glad he is in my state.
2017 CX-5 here 90k. It's been reliable! A couple minor quirks with the touch screen issues but other than that it's mechanically sound.. I know the 2018 models had some issues as Mazda began to experiment with cylinder deactivation. Friend of mine had to have her engine replaced due to this issue but she still loves her CX-5...
Thanks, for your updated review of the CX-5 turbo edition, My family drives Mazda's and we like them. Mine is a 2019 CX-5 Signature, with the first year of the turbo 2.2 liter. I've just had the car repaired for a coolant leak, possible cracked head at 80,000 miles. Out of warranty at 60,000. Mazda has had a tech bulletin on it but no recall yet. They did pick-up about 40-45% of the $6,800 cost and have since changed the design, My wife has a 2024 CX-5 Signature (w/ the turbo) on order. Thanks, again for your reviews from a mechanic's point of view.
$6,800? I'm guessing most of the cost was labor. There's a lot of stuff bolted to the Mazda engine which has to be removed. It's the one thing I don't like.
I have the same car 2.2L Turbo at 33000km thats currently being repaired under warranty for the same issue. Mazda South Africa is aware of this problem but also make it appear not as broad for this models.. Will the change in head design solve the issue permanently from reoccurring?
@@peterandrewj , Yes, most of it was for labor. I saw it disassembled and was amazed how mush of the front end under the hood and fenders they had to remove to drop and repair the engine.
We bought a 2024 CX-5 Turbo Signature in December 2023. Our first Mazda. We also were fortunate to get the 60 months 0% financing. First thing I did was replace the Toyo A36 tires with PIRELLI SCORPION AS PLUS 3 tires. The CX-5 feels much more connected to the road and the ride did improve a very noticeable amount. The only issue I have is the height of the armrest on the door. It's too low for me at 6ft. 1 in., but the HUD made it possible for me to lower the steering wheel and adjust for the low armrest. The wife and I both wish they had included the mirrors in the two-position seating memory function. I can say that no vehicle is perfect, yet this one comes close to meeting every expectation we had in making a new car purchase. Due to mountain driving on curvy roads in West Virginia we are/will use Top Tier (Exxon in our area) 93 octane fuel along with oil changes every 5,000 miles using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 oil. The new Valvoline Restore and Protect oil may be a good option. Looking forward to driving this SUV to 150,000 miles or 12 -13 years, before the next trade.
Wow! Excellent review 👏 I actually am driving the same model as a rental while my CR-V gets repaired..( body damage) and have really been rethinking the Honda 🤔 Really like the CX-5..had a 2011 CX-9 forever..It was a beast..Mazda engineering is definitely on point..Thanks so much for the good work and keep those videos coming.
So far I love my 2023 carbon edition cx5 with red interior. Smooth refined driving experience. I kept my 110k miles mazda3 2015 soul red. So far I’m happy with Mazda cars.🙏🏼❤️
Love it

Appreciate Mazda saying no to CVT’s.
That's what really made me consider a Mazda for my next daily driver car. Either a cx5 or a mazda will probably be my next purchase. I just do not like the way cvt's drive
Has tranny dipstick too!
That was a big reason I bought one on the day this video came out!
A key reason for my switching from Honda to Mazda. I've had a CX-30 since July 2020 and have had no problems. Love the simple 4-cylinder without any need for a turbo.
The 6-speed auto is really one of the best around. Spent some time in a Mazda6 with it and was impressed with its smoothness and quick shifts.
A quality naturally aspirated engine coupled with a NON-CVT is a refreshingly comfortable place to be.
But this particular version has a turbo
Exactly why I bought it. No turbo. No CVT. 191 HP.
@@williammcguigan7469does it have decent pickup when pulling out in traffic?

I couldn't agree more with you
Why would he play brand loyalty? Because he worked a Toyota dealer? What you say makes no sense. Only a clown would do that. Does AMD look like a clown to you?
Toyota ain't looking so go now that most Tundras have been recalled with no fix available, they got caught cheating of certification, or Tacomas made in Mexico where pay is $2.50/hr , have quality control issues and have jacked their price up ~ 10K over the last gen.

Same. Outstanding quality and value. Very happy with this purchase.

She loves that car!
i would still have mine if I didnt put 80K on it in 3 years!
I'm a Mazda tech. My wife still has her 16 cx5 and I'm on my second cx5, 23 carbon. I love it. Great cars and a very good warranty. Too good actually.
Our second car is a 2013 CX-5 also, first edition with the smaller 155HP engine. 109k miles zero issues. Kinda sluggish but great on gas, handles really well and just and all round easy car to live with.
2013 is old bruh, definitely time to update that artifact
I asked wife about replacing her 2015, she said no thanks. Drove my 2022 CX-5 and said she liked her 2015 better.
I bought mine (non-turbo) 10 hours ago after watching a lot of reviews, including a prior one from TCCN. This one makes me even happier about my choice.
Our family has had the non turbo 2021 model for its 3rd year now. Amazing car with very little maintenance
I bought my non-turbo model back in December mainly from watching this guy's other CX-5 video.
Once you drive a Mazda, you won’t want to drive anything else.
@@ChicagoRob2 Actually, my wife leased a CX-90 at a dealership that just opened up. A CX-5 caught my eye and I ended up buying one. We traded in a Kia Telluride and a Kia Seltos. It’s been 2 days and we’re off to a fine start!
I think I’m going to get one myself
I love it!
Stalks.
Oil change info was very helpful. Think I'm doing Mazda instead of RAV4. Thank you
Subaru has a little door/flap you can remove or rotate to get to the oil drain plug and the newer models have the oil filter on top of the engine which makes oil changes a breeze. But, you are stuck with a CVT with most Subarus. 😕
@@brian0410I never had a problem with CVT I had two Subarus the Impreza over 300000 still running I own a Mazda cx5 nice car too !

Agreed! I also have a 2022 CX-5! Awesome car. Cheers!
Does Mazda take premium or regular unleaded?
That means they're overhyped and really don't drive that well in reality. Subpar compared to Germans.

Hello!!!
Have a 2019 CX5 with now 57,000 miles and we are loving it. Love the simplicity and the quality.
He didn’t mention how incredibly quiet the cabin is due to the way Mazda engineered the windshield and windows. It is the quietest car I’ve ever driven, bar non.
Wish THEY would produce the cx 5 with RWD. I would go and get one immediately.
Devoted Mazda owner here. I have never had other cars but Mazda. ZOOM, ZOOM !!!

I've had four Mazdas over the years, two of those being CX-5. Great cars!
Same. Had Mazda's for over 20 years now. Great cars all round.
I would not do the turbo.
cylinder deactivation may be as bad as turbo in terms of reliability...also turbo was always used in cx-9 and I don't recall major issues or complains
No turbo for me. I keep my cars 10+ years.
@@chester_hobbsis turbo bad or something?
No cylinder deactivation is a game changer. I was very hesitant with my wife wanting another mazda because of it, but it being gone is awesome!
The door button is priceless. By habit I double check the car is locked by pulling the handles. I can’t do that if it’s touch sensor, which would unlock the doors inadvertently. Old habits die hard.
Not very helpful in a snowy, icy climate however.
It's shows its age and how outdated this entire vehicle is, lol.
I use my rear door to check on my 2023 Mazda3 hatchback.
Finally a proper car review that helps make an informed decision. Thank you! Deciding between this and the CX-30
Same here, have you made your decision ?

The CX-5 looks more modern than the new RAV4 and CRVs despite being 3-4 years older in design. The CX-5 probably won't look dated until another 5 years later, it's looks was just designed well

Great to know
11:25 Amazing! The cylinder deactivation was the only thing I didn't like about the CX-5, and now it's gone!
It is only gone till the supply chain issue is solved
It's on the 2.5NA not the 2.5T.

Our 2024 CX-5 just hit one year. Only 4,500 miles. We love it!
Did you buy the turbo or the non turbo?? I am considering getting one and getting the non turbo engine.
Tip for CX-5 owners: in case you didn’t know, you can push in and hold the gear button while in Park with your foot on the brake; shut off the engine and the infotainment will remain on for 15 more minutes. No need to idle for a passenger running into a convenience store.
Thank you!
I'm right handed so doing that is a bit awkward. The computer knows how all the gears line up so you can also with your foot on the brake push the start button with it in gear and it will leave the infotainment on and then you can still easily put it into Park with it off.
@@Kent__the_Bakerwait so if I'm in drive, I can push brake and start and it will go into accessory mode? I usually do the trick the OP mentioned.

The independent rear suspension in the CX5 alone is worth going CX5 over CX30.
We just bought one. This is probably the best review of it I've seen.
I just recently got a 2024 CX-5, and purchased it as much for what it has - as for what it hasn't.
I have one and everything he said is true especially what he said about the ride being a little jumpy. IT'S NOT A LINCOLN. 🇺🇸
Just bought a 2024 Cx5 turbo and i love it ❤it's a total beast
Great channel, starts review where it should start - under the hood. Other channels distract with design, shiny interiors and checking infotainment or interior plastic but forget the important questions, how long its going to last, is it reliable, what are weak spots, how much for maintenance. Keep up the good work.
I usually don't like Suv but the CX 5 is the exception.
Love the minimalistic & timeless design.
100% should🔥
I wonder if the CX-50 has cylinder deactivation and stop/start?
@@gosman949 , I believe it does unless it's Turbo
My dad rented one of these for our yearly trip to our car show, I was flying going 90 on the highway feeling like it was 50…it was SO smooth and really peppy.
i love how you go about your reviews..no fluff..indepth looks..honest about pros and cons..keep going
Man I wish EVERYONE would do the car review as good as you do it. Bravo 👏👏👏
The technical insights from a service standpoint is what differentiates this channel from the rest of the driver or consumer centric reviews. Also appreciate the methodical diagnostic videos. Subbed!
I love your honest reviews, the best car channel here on TH-cam. Greetings from Germany
I totally agree. The Mazda CX-5 is definitely a good-looking car!
Mazda have been very wise not to change the styling too dramatically. I have a ten year CX-5, the styling of the newer ones just gets better and better (but clearly faithful to the original). Several other brands go too far cluttering up the bodywork and fittings/ lights with lines, creases and angles.
You give the most thorough explanations & overall reviews! Your reviews are really helpful!! Thank you :)!
Thats 90k miles
Wow…talking of lots of driving for sure but that’s also a fair review as well
It's very easy to sit through the entire length of your videos.
I don't think I can say that for anybody else.
The bump on the rear differential is the rear jacking point so you're not lifting on the cover.
The most detailed review of this car that I've seen and absolutely agree with your dislikes. Overall still a beautiful car to look at and drive. I love my cx5
Daamn.. Mazda got some really nice interiors
my first car, exact the review model, same color, I can't describe how much I love the car, like I watched the whole video after owning the same for almost a year.
I'm so happy that I can buy Mazda's again. I stopped buying Mazda's in the early 1990's after Ford began to destroy the company. Last year I bought an MX-5 Miata. Next year I will buy a Mazda SUV.
Swapping Ford for Toyota as the Mazda partner/parent brand has been very good for Mazda.
This year we bought the CX-5, next year I will buy an MX-5. LOL
I have this model car. The A pillars are not a problem. Maybe if you are short and sit up forward, the pillars may seem larger, but for normal height folks, the pillars are the same as any other car. I am pleased with this vehicle.
This is one of the best looking vehicle. It does not need a redesign. They should give it more power and make it a hybrid.
at the end of 2022 I bought a lightly used 2021 CX5 Signature Turbo.
As a 2020 cx5 owner a few points-
I’m glad he is in my state.
just bought a cx5 yesterday, excited to get and drive it ! :D
I actually love this color combination because of how unique it is
2017 CX-5 here 90k.
I have the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and I absolutely love it. 0 problems so far, and a joy to drive
I love your reviews, so much more interesting and educational than most others on YT.
1 week since i owned this 2024 Mazda CX5 2.5ltrs Turbo SPORT. It depends what is your driving habbit but its great 😊
Thanks, for your updated review of the CX-5 turbo edition, My family drives Mazda's and we like them.
Wanted to get a CX-5 for my wife but was on the fence. If AMD says it's a good car...you can take it to the bank! Buying the car this weekend!
