    I lived my whole life eating almost nothing but high oxalate foods. When I first found out about oxalates and thought they might be the root of my health issues, I stopped eating 90% of those high oxalate foods. But I also learned about not dumping too fast, so I kept tea and black pepper in my diet, and during the first couple of weeks, a handful of almonds or peanuts every few days and a one inch square of dark chocolate. Still, I spent the last 8 months dumping oxalates almost constantly, with 3 or 4 days break every week or so. Just two weeks ago, the huge dumping stopped and I immediately started feeling so much better. I'm still drinking one or two cups of tea a day and use a small amount of black pepper on my eggs. Now, I'm very much hoping my joints can repair and return to normal ROM.

    • @gailivey2015
      @gailivey2015 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @@lf7065 It tends to change somewhat, but I've begun to notice some patterns. First is pain. My pain starts to increase before a big dump starts, and I feel unmotivated to do much. I tend to dump from my bladder, so I will have some pain in my urethra and my urine tends to spray a bit. I also dump from my eyes, so I'll pick very sharp grit from the corners of my eyes. I might also get some crystals coming from the skin on my forehead or thighs, but that seems to have stopped. For some reason, I'll get one really great night of sleep just before it starts, too, and then have uncomfortable sleep until it stops again. I get a lot of pain in my neck and shoulders and lately, it's been the middle of my back, which never used to hurt at all. Also, this time, my hips and knees are bothering me, and I've rarely had problems in my hips and my knees have been silent for several months. As those darn crystals move around your body, they shred everything they contact.

    In my younger days living at home we had a big rhubarb plant which several of the neighborhood children loved to eat the stalks, dipped in sugar, while mom made the best rhubarb pies and stewed rhubarb. In my teenage years I even tried making rhubarb and cherry wine (which I called Cherub wine). I even started making creamy rhubarb pie which used sweetened condensed milk in the pie filling--tasted great and I am still here at age 65; mom made it to 97 years old.

    For several years, I have been eating the same "super healthy" breakfast, changing some ingredients in and out by experimentation: steel cut oats, quinoa, chard, spinach, chia, flaxseed, maca, pumpkin pie spice blend; accompanied by a quart of mocha: coffee, unsweetened almond milk, Guittard cocoa, and a pinch of unrefined ground stevia leaf. Accounting for oxalates, my daily breakfast of champions it turning me into a sack of crystaline calcium oxalate. Small wonder I have struggled to identify sources and eliminate some of the symptoms. It took me more than 40 years to figure out that I have always had an allium sensitivity because it's nearly ubiquitous in food and comorbidities, or medications for which, happen to produce the same symptoms. It seems like quite a challenge to responsibly replace high-oxalate food; but in truth, the recommended ramping down will probably be the easiest method, given that reducing or eliminating one thing at a time is a sustainable pace-I know from experience trying to modify habits and routines, difficult for an ADHD space case like me, that mastering one change at a time works best.

      But you aren’t trashing your body if you dont have an issue excreting oxolates normally, and dark chocolate is inherently ‘better’ because of its increased antioxidants. If you don’t have an issue with oxolates, a carnivore diet does not actually address the root cause which is your body’s poor ability to metabolise these compounds, so you’re needlessly removing healthy foods that your body and gut needs to thrive, for fat and protein, animal proteins being correlated which all major causes of mortality and deficiency of fiber, which your microbiome feeds on.
      I know the carnivore community don’t want to hear it as they like to be told eating the most unhealthy and unsustainable foods is actually the most natural diet, our ancestors and biology and the majority of studies on diet disagrees which you may of course believe is somehow propaganda. You can’t deny or ignore the fact the the longest living populations consume a wide array of plant foods with minimal if any animal products, the exception being fish for omega 3 which unfortunately is incredibly unsustainable and a common source of heavy metals.
      I urge people not to get caught up in something like this as you’re replacing one problem in the short term with bigger problems and malnutrition in the long term. And that’s without noticing those pushing the carnivore diet are often found to be fraudulent, such as the liver king recently, and are simply making money by selling an idea with zero evidence to support it.
      People are going to do what they want but it’s important to think clearly and logically about it.

      @@a.b.7457 From what I’ve read there are certain gut bacteria that make oxalates less problematic. Specifically Oxalobacter, but also certain strains of Bifido and Lactobacillus. A significant percentage of the population has Oxalobacter colonized in their gut and they don’t seem to have a problem regulating oxalates from their diet as these bacteria break it down. Unfortunately many of us (the majority) have lost this species due to antibiotic use and whatever other environmental factors damage the gut. Unfortunately there isn’t currently an Oxalobacter probiotic on the market to replace this valuable species. I suppose eating fermented foods and perhaps supplementing with a good probiotic can help. I’m curious as to whether goats milk or sheep’s milk might have the Oxalobacter but I would think it would have to be raw and then there’s other risks and it can be hard to get. Beyond that, I’ve heard consuming calcium rich foods along side oxalate foods can limit absorption (maybe that’s why fruit and cheese are often served together). Also making sure you drink enough water so the oxalates that are absorbed are flushed through the kidneys better. Lemon water and apple cider also seem to help but I’d be careful not to overdo that either.

    A few things which you haven't mentioned in this video I was wondering what you think, basically want to get your thoughts on ways to mitigate the damages caused by eating foods which contain oxalates. I have researched some options. Please let me know how viable and effective each of them are:
    1. Increase calcium intake - Calcium binds to oxaltes during digestion
    2. Ingest lemon juice or apple cider vinegar which seems to dissipate a effect of great quantity of citrates which in turn increases the excretion of oxalates (unsure if the effect is just limited to kidney stones or not?)
    3. Consume yoghurt and kefir to increase levels of Oxalobacter formigenes in the gut which uses oxalate as an energy source. This significantly reduces the amount of oxalate your body absorbs (apparently).

    Great content! I have a question about the common tactics of removing oxalate from the food before eating them: boiling in water and eating fruits rich in citrate. I've always heard that if you boil sweet potato in water until it becomes very soft, most of oxalate will be lost to the water, for it is water soluble. Also, if you eat citric fruits like tangerines or drink a lemon squeezed in the water after or together with a meal with oxalate, the citric acid in these fruits would combine with the oxalate, avoiding its connection with calcium and therefore the formation of calcium oxalate. Is this information true? Does boiling and citric fruits work preventing oxalate intoxication?

      There's a difference between destroying a molecule with heat versus removing a molecule by making it accessible to whisk away with water. We do the latter when cooking beans in order to remove some of the compounds that cause gas and bloating. I believe that @marciac.6287's question was about the efficacy of the latter. Does the long time cooking in water required for sweet potatoes, (a) amount to a significant reduction in oxalate content to warrant the effort, (b) vis-à-vis the reduction in vitamins destroyed by heat? In other words, are there enough nutrients left in the sweet potatoes, and sufficient oxalates removed, in order that we may consider some preparations safe enough to consume them now and then? I do love sweet potato.

    My problem with reducing oxalates in my diet is that I'm not in the habit of eating any one type of food all the time. If I'm not supposed to eat chocolate, then I just won't eat it. There is no reducing my intake if I eat food sporadically. I might go a month without eating sweet potato, maybe longer so i'm not able to reduce when it's so sporadical. There's only one type of food that I eat on a semi regular basis and that's maybe three times a week and that's spinach that I can slowly take out. All of the other foods on the list, if I feel like putting in the recipe, I just won't.

    Great info, great presentation! Thank you!! Ugh I’m so worn out with protocols… I tried just going carnivore and I did get super exhausted and noticed my eyes were itchy and sandy and so was my nose, which I’ve since heard is one of the ways oxalates leave the body. 😑 I’ve been paleo for 20+ years and have followed a lot of principles of an anti inflammatory diet so I haven’t been super high oxalate.

    If you are suffering from health issues caused by oxalates isn’t it worth suffering the effects of dumping to become symptom free as quickly as possible? Particularly if the crystals are causing permanent tissue damage. Short term discomfort (which you already have) for faster relief?

      That was exactly how I felt. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone with similar thoughts. My dumping is getting better… it was EXTREME in the beginning. I have had both my gallbladder removed and gastric bypass surgery, both surgeries can cause more dumping for the patient. On the road. Mostly carnivore. Best of health!

      They say you can’t remove it from the body fast enough so it can get reabsorbed elsewhere and cause more damage. Sally Norton said (in one of her videos), for some women it deposited in breast tissue and lead to cancer.

    • @Fishster
      @Fishster 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cathyann6835 ‘They’ also say it can leave the body so fast that it leaves residue on the skin. That would contradict the idea it’s re-absorbed. The trouble is not enough good evidence (studies). I guess she’s referencing the Castellaro study with the breast cancer comment. The findings where certainly interesting, there where two main conclusions (it was kind of two studies in one) but neither where ‘oxalates lead to breast cancer for some women’.

    I've known about oxalates, but didn't go off them totally forever. I would lower it then people would say it doesn't matter . I'd go back and forth. Trying strict carnivore has not been good. I've been bad off for years already. So what to do now of 12 weeks carnivore. Not doing good at all. My stiffness and pain, low bowel motility, I'm chair ridden, can't walk , broken compressed spine. Not sure what's oxalate related or what to do

    People who develop kidney stones do not necessarily consume more oxalates than those who do not. They are genetically predisposed to higher absorption in their intestines, a trait known as being "super absorbers." Oxalates do not only come from diet, bodies internally produce oxalates as a waste product. Higher fruit and veggie consumption is associated with a lower incidence of kidney stones due to alkalizing effect. Meat, rich in sulfuric amino acids (methionine and cysteine), has an acidifying effect. A daily can of tuna can increase kidney stone risk by 250%. Maintaining a healthy microflora, particularly the oxalate-eating bacteria Oxalobacter, is also crucial. Prolonged antibiotic use can damage the microflora and eliminate Oxalobacter. Additionally, there are many greens with low oxalate content.

    Doing a calculation seems too complex. I don't always eat the same foods day to day or week to week so it would be really hard to come up with an accurate number, although clearly I was on a very high oxalate diet (black tea, cassava flour, almonds, dark chocolate). After 2 days of removing most oxalate from my diet I started not feeling well, so I added some high and moderate oxalate foods back in and the next day (potatoes, bananas, black tea) felt better. I will look at the websites mentioned to get more info.

    I am in excruciating pain everyday for the past two years and almost three months. I was already strictly doing the carnivore diet for almost two years when one day I woke up and couldn't get out of bed bc., of the pain and swollen body. The doctors still don't know what is wrong with me (they were treating me for rhuematoid arthritis but, I test negative so, I got off the prednisone and stopped seeing that doctor) except now, I have a 5 mm kidney stone and osteoporosis and plaque in my arteries to my heart. I've been following you for a while and I think this is what is going on with me. I am trying to understand this but, it's so complicated bc., I am confused as to why I'd get it while doing carnivore. I found this research on line about O. fromigenes a probiotic that is supposed to help with oxalates and found it on Ebay, I'm waiting for it now. I think you are the best at explaining everything, and I appreciate you sharing all you know to help people.
