OXALATES--A Hidden Cause of Chronic Disease.
Oxalic Acid-A tiny molecule that is naturally occurring and when attached to a mineral it is called Oxalate. Oxalates form crystals like calcium oxalate-Kidney stones. (80%)
    Sources:
    1. Certain plants make oxalates for mineral management, seed germination and self-defense. High oxalate foods include spinach, rhubarb, beet greens, chard, certain nuts and seeds, cocoa powder, figs, kiwi turmeric and certain teas. (20-40%)
A single green smoothie with 2 cups of spinach contains about 1500 mg of oxalates.
    2. Oxalate is a metabolic waste product in mammals with no known function. (60-80%)
Higher amounts of oxalates are made when:
    **Deficient in B6
**High doses of vitamin C are taken or injected. Vit C is partially converted to oxalate.
**Some fungi make it, possibly for mineral management, especially in soil.
**Can be made by Aspergillus fungi living in the body.
Oxalates are anti-nutrient by stealing minerals. Soluble oxalates attached to mg, ca, fe, zn, cu etc. which can cause mineral deficiency in growth, reproduction.
    Negative impact of Oxalates
    · Corrosive to lining of GI, stresses the kidney, deposits into arteries and other tissues.
    · Triggers inflammation causing membrane and mitochondria damage, fatigue.
    · Nerve damage and brain.
    · Depletes antioxidants i.e. glutathione.
    · Destroys connective tissue-injury prone and poor recovery.
    · Uses vitamin B6 depleting B6 which in turn causes increase bodies production of oxalates. Depletes biotin.
That is why it can create so many symptoms: GI, lung, genitourinary, bone health, brain. Association with mood, fatigue, vulvodynia, autism, gout, joint pain, osteoporosis etc.
IBD, gastric bypass and antibiotic therapy can increase oxalates. Certain bacteria in the GI can break down the oxalates.
Oxalate issues are not sensitivity or allergy, it’s toxicity.
    Oxalate dumping
    Strategies
**Eat less than 50mg of oxalates per day.
    **Increase water consumption.
**Increase calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, potassium citrate intake.
**Boil the high oxalate foods which will decrease it 30-87%.
    **Take a B complex with B6(P5P)
**Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis have enzymes that degrade oxalates.
    **Chondroitin sulfate and biotin
    **Lactobacillus Acidophilus
    **Bifidobacterium Lactis
    **Lemon juice in water
    **Epsom salt bath
    **genetics
Oxalate are excreted through feces and kidney(40-50mg/day)
    No best test for oxalates.
Patients with advanced kidney deposits of oxalates can show very little oxalates in the urine.
Organic acid testing could give us clues to oxalate issues and candida.
Genetic SNP for SULT(Sulfotransferase)-oxalate problems can negatively affect this pathway in the liver.

Oxalates are naturally occurring compounds found in various foods, which can increase the risk of kidney stone formation and affect mineral absorption. The oxalate content of foods is typically measured in milligrams per serving. The following list presents foods high in oxalates, arranged in ascending order of their oxalate content:
Foods with moderate to high oxalate content (10-50 mg per serving)
    • Rhubarb (10-15 mg)
    • Beets (15-20 mg)
    • Spinach (20-25 mg)
    • Swiss chard (25-30 mg)
    • Sweet potatoes (30-35 mg)
    • Collard greens (35-40 mg)
    • Okra (40-45 mg)
    • Parsnips (45-50 mg)
Foods with high to extremely high oxalate content (50-800 mg per serving)
    • Almonds (50-60 mg)
    • Cashews (60-70 mg)
    • Peanut butter (70-80 mg)
    • Soybeans (80-100 mg)
    • Sesame seeds (100-120 mg)
    • Starfruit (120-150 mg)
    • Tea (black, green, or white) (150-200 mg)
    • Chocolate (dark, milk, or white) (200-250 mg)
    • Buckwheat (250-300 mg)
    • Sorrel (300-400 mg)
    • Purslane (400-500 mg)
    • Rhubarb leaves (500-600 mg)
    • Spinach (cooked) (600-800 mg)
Understanding the oxalate content of various foods is crucial for individuals with kidney stones, gout, or those who require a low-oxalate diet. By being aware of these high-oxalate foods, individuals can make informed choices to reduce their oxalate intake and mitigate potential health risks.
Dietary recommendations for individuals with kidney stones or gout
For individuals with kidney stones or gout, it is essential to limit or avoid foods with high oxalate content. A healthcare professional or registered dietitian can provide personalized guidance on reducing oxalate intake and developing a balanced diet that meets individual nutritional needs.
Cooking and preparation methods to reduce oxalate content
Certain cooking methods, such as boiling or steaming, can help reduce the oxalate content of foods. For example, boiling spinach can reduce its oxalate content by up to 50%. Additionally, using oxalate-reducing techniques, like soaking or sprouting, can help minimize oxalate intake.

To give advice, unasked, about diet or medical decisions is almost always not appreciated.
If someone asks you, then tell them. Even then it is almost never the case, that they will try out your idea. If people do not ask for advice, do not give it.
Everyone needs to get insight for themselves, we are different, luckily. Often medication/diet/herbs that help one person is definitively not helpful for another person, so I think it is a just principle, that everybody needs to find out for themselves. If you withhold information when someone is searching and asking you, that is disgusting. Nevertheless to give the precious information to people, who maybe do not have an issue or are totally not open for it, because something else is more important in their lives at the moment is like giving pearls to swine, no sane person would do it. I’ve been low oxalate for about 13 months. Starting in childhood.
    Ear infections.
    Hay fever.
    Teenager, arthritis.
    Twenties, itchy skin, psoriasis.
Thirties, numbness in fingers, symptoms of celiac disease. Went on a gluten free diet and things improved dramatically, but the psoriasis never fully cleared.🤔 Anyway, at the start of 2023 started to get peripheral neuropathy after a particularly stressful period. Luckily for me by April 2023 I had discovered sally k Norton, and realised what the problem was. I’ve been gradually poisoning my self 🤦🏻‍♂️.
    Peanut butter.
    Whole grains.
    Plant based milks.
    Nuts and seeds.
    Sweet potato and beets.
    Turmeric and cumin.
Spinach, to name just a few of the culprits. 13 months on low oxalate and no more psoriasis or peripheral neuropathy. Both will reappear slightly when the dumping is strong, but soon go away again. This has highlighted how important freedom of choice is around food, a one size fits all approach would be, imo a public health disaster.

If people want to continue their behavior that causes problems, I really don’t want to keep having conversations about it. Exactly - and mostly because not every two "bodies" are made equal. The human body is extremely complex, and genetics play a major factor on how the body responds to the world. It is important to know about oxalates, lectins, etc., but in the end if we don't have issues like kidney stones, we should just live with the awareness of them. If we fine-tune our nutrition based on anything and everything that we find on TH-cam we are potentially causing problems somewhere else. Listen to the body. The other consideration is that for every "eat this" video there are many "don't eat this" videos as well. Eat clean, eat whole, be active, sleep well, and know your body.

A can of salmon (usually. I haven't lately) with lemon pepper and some basil. Most of them I know are healthier than most MDs and even hospital dieticians that I know. I actually know a dietician who sells homemade pastries and desserts as a side business.

How can you measure/weigh 50 milligrams of oxalates? How can anyone tell a certain vegetable has a given amount of oxalates? These health videos are getting really goofy. People say eat your vegetables don’t eat meat another says completely the opposite. People say never supplement with calcium others say the opposite. What good is any of this information. If you watch a video they will say your misinformed, if you miss a video they will say your uninformed.

Don’t forget about your teeth. Plaque is oxalates. That you need to have scrapped off at the dentist’s offices.
I haven’t been to a dentist in about 15 years. Seven years ago my teeth were damned ugly. Lots of plaque 😞. Now after 6 1/2 years of carnivore, zero plaque. And still no dentist. Just eating fatty cuts of meat and zero plants ever.
Oh, and the guy in the video mention something, but left out something at the same time. Oxalates damage endothelial cells. He said that. But what he left out which a little more important than that is that is where the arterial plaque comes from. Oxalates. The only reason you find cholesterol in the plaque is its just there doing its job healing. That is the main job of cholesterol. Cant heal without it.

Have you ever seen one under an electron microscope? The science on using lemon juice to prevent reformation is inconclusive. The fact that you feel the need to do something to combat oxalate content in your food should tell you, you know they're no good for you. Incredibly painful urination from the stones is another sign. Your body uses up calcium to get rid of the oxalate. And, you can't get rid of the deposits of oxalate throughout your body with lemon juice. So many reasons to avoid them.
