    My own oxalate story --for several years I saw countless urologists for this horrible burning bladder I had. No infections ever. They had no answers. It turns out the green smoothies (spinach) and drinking almond milk was the cause. Oxalates.
    I stopped all that and began living again. Thanks for covering this.

      Same thing happened to my dear friend! Bought a top o the line new juicer, juiced every green leafy in sight, and wound up with kidney stones in ZBOTH kidneys!!! And also did almond milk smoothies with assorted unknown oxalates… same… I’d shoot myself!!!I’ve had kidney stones… immediately learned about oxalates… I’m so careful? It’s sickening!!!🤣😂🤪🙋‍♀️♥️‼️

      So true! Ah the expensive juicer.
      One of urologists I saw wrote me a script for Elmiron, a drug for interstitial cystitis, which I did not have.
      That drug has serious side effects, and I never took it. None of them ever inquired about my diet.
      I've noticed issues with tomato sauces as well so I avoid those too.

    I had omitted almonds and spinach from my diet in 2002 when I had horrible lower back pains. I think the pain was radiating from my kidneys due to the oxalates. When my sister recently complained of mysterious kidney referred pain I asked her if she had been eating spinach and almonds. She said DAILY! All pain went away when she stopped eating them. 👍🤗🥳

      This is good. I put some almond butter DAILY in my steel cut oats. This comment has me thinking. Never had oxalate issues . I guess I need to cut down. And I make grilled chicken salad with spinach 😭😭

    Almonds were the last food I said goodbye to before going carnivore. I love them but dropped them because of the oxalate content. If you're an almond lover like me - trust me, you will survive (and thrive) without them.

      I was being "healthy" eating almond butter by the spoonful. And spinach smoothies. Inflammation, gout, osteoarthritis -- I thought I was being good! Keep increasing the spinach, avocados etc. Now carnivore 18 months -- ALL GONE! Finally got it through my thick skull that you TAKE AWAY stuff for health, not add more of it. (DUH)

      I used to eat a pound of almond every 2-3 days. I had been doing keto on and off for years. I would say they were 75%+ of my total oxalate intake. Who knows how long it will take me to get rid of them all.

    I cannot eat spinach, even cooked, because I have bad reaction (mouth ulcers)
    Yes, a lemon a day can reduce oxalate.

    I would just warn folks to withdraw slowly! Last year, I tried to remove oxalates all at once and it HURT. My eyes felt like they had sand in them and my fibromyalgia pain skyrocketed. So, work your way down the oxalate scale gradually.

      I can attest. I did carnivore cold Turkey 3 months ago and suffered dumping symptoms. I learned to include small amounts of oxylates every few days to circumvent the symptoms. It helps but I wish I had eased into dropping the veggies.

      Yep! Sally Norton talks about that ALL the time. If you get dumping symptoms, just add back a little bit of oxalate foods to allow your body to dump them more slowly. I'd highly recommend any of her interviews on YT....and she's done tons of interviews. She has a crazy oxalate story.

      Correct, if you go cold-turkey then keep some dark chocolate and almonds around to eat in case you experience severe oxalate dumping and eat small quantities of them one or twice daily decreasing the amount gradually until you can ween off them completely and not experience the awful pain of oxalate dumping... believe me, I tried cold-turkey and very much regretted it.

      That is medically inexcusable!! I had my first last summer that actually resulted in sepsis and a 10 day hospital stay. The urologist never mentioned oxylates to me, either. But I immediately began researching and made the connection to my high almond intake. The last two years should have taught us WE ARE ON OUR OWN as far as our health is concerned. We're in big trouble if not doing our own research. Thanks, Doc, for getting good info out there!

      I’ve passed 9 kidney stones in the past 20 years and have 7-8 removed with lithotripsy. Reducing oxalates has reduced stone development to only 1 in past 2 years. Three doctors since 2001 told me to reduce oxalates but didn’t believe them until about 2 years ago. Now I’m a believer.

      Kidney stones are often caused by lack of B6, diabetes, low calcium high fat, or low calcium high oxalate. Gut bacteria is the first defence at dealing with oxalates. I wish you well.

    My husband suffered from debilitating gout. Keto cured him. Something he was eating continued to cause a "twingy" feeling in his feet. He ate gobs of spinach. Once we learned about oxilates, he stopped with the spinach. Cleared up completely. He hasn't had a gout attack in over 4 years. Eats all the meat--including sausage--that he wants.

      As an avid gardener, frugal cook, herbology student and now 72 yr old with severeidiopathic neuropathy during the keto diet switch, I scramble to combat my ignorance of oxalate dumping, hope to balance all out in spite of allopathic doctors skepticism &disbelief. A rude shock,getting good keto results anyway, if modified, will stubbornly persist in re education!

    I am 1 week into removing Oxalates from my diet and even after just 2 days I could feel the difference in pain levels. I have been suffering from severe joint and muscle pains for years (57 year old)
    Just removing Almonds and Spinach and potatoes has radically reduced pain in my hands and feet and knees. I wake up now and lie in bed thinking, Wow! Nothing hurts this morning! ❤❤❤

    Terrible vulvodynia back in the 1990’s. Went to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ where Dr R. Stuart Fowler was in charge of their Women’s Health Dept. After years of terrible suffering, he quickly told us what the problem was. It was so simple that my husband became very angry at the medical community for not helping us sooner. We followed his guidelines, which included a diet change and taking specific calcium supplements at that time. Everything began noticeably clearing up within one week. Oxalates are no joke.

    Grateful to know this now but I went through years of horrible pain and thought I was eating healthy. Used to love Navy beans, corn bread, grits, spinach salads and definitely baked potatoes. I've never met Dr. Berry but he's radically improved my life!!

      Omg I love all these although I no longer eat spinach after giving myself a 10mm C/O stone that 100% occluded my kidney and almost killed me by almost rupturing my kidney. Take this seriously and don't let this be you. The midshift ER DR was in a panic bc she didn't have a surgeon on staff. The hospital was totally unprepared for this emergency.
      I had no clue a kidney stone could be deadly.

    In my case, oxalates appear to have caused kidney disease. I had a kidney biopsy in January 2024 that showed my kidneys have suffered permanent damage from penetration of oxalate crystals. The biopsy report describes the penetration as "moderate," so I'm hoping a lower oxalate diet will enable my kidneys to recover some function.
    Surprisingly, I have no kidney stones. But I wasn't eating much calcium, and have two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar every day (one in the morning, one in the evening.)
    The only food on your list of seven I had much of was almonds. I really liked almonds. People should know that tomato sauces, unfortunately, are also high in oxalates.

    For years, I ADORED spinach, but never understood why I would often get sick from it. I'm talking full blown food poisoning symptoms. It didn't always make me sick, but it was like a coin flip whether it would or not. So, for a long time, I figured I had bad luck with rotten or contaminated batches.
    But then, one day, went to the store, bought the freshest organic spinach there, went straight home, cooked it, and ate it. I didn't feel great that night, but the next day was sick all day in bed.
    That's when I figured I must have some sort of allergy to spinach. And when I looked it up, I finally learned about oxalates. And suddenly, it all made sense.

      For a few years even before keto I started having awful stomach & bathroom issues after eating potatoes, tomatoes & salads made from spinach. I avoid most of the high oxalate foods now & am much better. I love a simple dinner of steak. I feel energized and have zero stomach issues after eating it. Zero oxalates! Yum!

      My lecitin and oxalate rich vegan diet resulted in years of Fibromyalgia and CFS..😑 Took me years to understand that eating meat again is no enough i also have to get rid of the other stuff. I loooved spinach and beets

      If you cook the spinach in water and then squeeze it well with your hands, removing all the liquid, it greatly decreases the oxalate load.

    I developed a kidney stone several years ago after I first went keto, because of all the high oxalate foods I was eating. I didn't figure it out until AFTER the stone, and I started researching causes. I cut out the high oxalate stuff, and started taking both potassium and magnesium citrate supplements daily, and drinking lemon water, just to be on the safe side. I never want to experience that kind of horrible pain again! Agony!

      Had the same experience. Oxalate dumping caused me intense pain all over my body, for weeks. Went to the hospital, had all types of tests and they had no clue what the problem was. Did my research and found out about the damage oxalates do to the body, cut them out and took vitamin B1, along with other B vitamins. Problem solved. Thanks Doctor Berry😆

    I began Keto for an autoimmune disease, PMR, and that got me off 15mg of Prednisone in 3 months, but I was also on methotrexate for my RA. Keto was helping with the RA, especially when I added a tin of sardines everyday, but progress was slow and I was only able to taper from 15mg to 12.5mg over 10 months. If I tried to taper too quickly I had terrible pain in my hands and wrists. In December of 2018 Dr. Berry uploaded a video announcing he was going to do carnivore, so December 26 I began Carnivore, and 30 days later I began tapering off methotrexate and was off in 2 weeks and was pain free. A week after I was off methotrexate I had a small Kale salad, and the following day had pain in my hands and wrists, Thinking this was just a coincidence I waited a week and had another salad, and the following day again had pain in my hands and wrists. I continued eating carnivore another couple of months before I tried another salad, this time with no problems. I now eat most meat with a little veg on the side. I can tell when I've eaten too many foods with oxalates, typically almonds because I begin to feel it in my hands. I feel my best when I eat just meat and eggs.

    Thank you. At 74 yrs old I've become extremely sensitive to oxalates. This only adds to being sensitive to sodium, sugar, dairy, and some glutens. Frustrating. Went through a number of kidney stone experiences resulting in CKD. This information apparently is not well known in the medical community, even among urologists.

      @@noreenmary3300 mine took about 6 months, but yours could take a different amount of time. If you don’t have a blood pressure machine, get one and keep a record of your blood pressure.

      @@noreenmary3300 That is fairly resent, I do take BP meds but I had to cut that in half, I still have a lot more weight to lose so my goal is to completely stop the meds, also I've been drinking hibiscus tea that helps as well

      @@bearhimcompany How so? I drink about 2 regular coffee cups a day. BUT I will also tap the coffee back down on my keruig loose coffee cup and run the smallest cup amount of water through it again. I do have a lot "chronic" pain, but I have had it for years. The doctor said people can be sensitive to oxalates, I have to wonder if this hasn't been my problem all along. Thans for sharing.

    I’ve been on a gluten free/ low to very low oxalate diet for 6 yrs and it’s been life changing for me! I can definitely tell if I eat too many oxalates in a day since I have painful “dumping” symptoms. I strongly recommend slowly lowering oxalates over time to avoid pretty intense dumping symptoms than can occur. Lowering too quickly causes the body to “dump” stored oxalates in the body quickly leading to lots of issues. This can be helped by slowly lowering from a high oxalate diet to a low oxalate diet over time to allow the body time to adjust. Mineral support, especially Magnesium is also very helpful! While dumping stored oxalates is beneficial, too much too soon is not. Slow and steady is my strategy. Thank you Dr Berry for talking about oxalates.

      @@underated17 I personally take magnesium supplement but do try to get it from foods sources as much as possible. Unfortunately, a lot of magnesium rich foods are high in oxalate 😞

    I've never had a kidney stone, however I had developed leaky gut which led to accumulation of calcium oxalate crystals in my joints and eyes. I had arthritis and intermittent eye pain/blurred vision for nearly a decade that I had attributed to a bad accident that had put me in ICU back in 2009. Injury sites and inflammation increase blood flow to the area in an attempt to heal but if oxalates are in the bloodstream they can gravitate to the area as well and prevent proper healing.
    2 years into carnivore and those issues have completely resolved.

    I am 61 years old, and previously had been vegetarian for the past 31 years, mainly vegan the past 6 years, and I had been consuming all those foods Dr. Berry listed, in abundant amounts, along with many other fairly high-oxalate foods and spices. I have never had a kidney stone, but a recent scan showed degenerative changes in my kidneys (pelviectasis), as well as multiple thyroid nodules (so I will now avoid CT scans with iodine-contrast dye because of my thyroid issues). I also have arthritis in numerous places, especially my hands, which have numerous bone spurs at the joints. I have been researching oxalates in the diet for the past few weeks, and I think I may be onto something... Medical literature always says that the causes of these things are unknown or "normal ageing" (wear and tear). But my "healthy diet" wasn't keeping me healthy, so I am definitely making some changes because I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet!
    A word of caution for other people like me who have been heavy oxalate-eaters - I believe I should taper my oxalate consumption, and not quit abruptly, as Dr. Berry suggests in the video, because my body may try to eliminate too much oxalate at one time, and I want to avoid feeling sick from "oxalate dumping"...

      Eleanor, I believe that oxalates are more insideous than we are led to believe. Doing their damage silently behind the scenes.
      I wonder if oxalates are the cause of osteophytes on the spine, as well as bone spurs as you mentioned. If you don’t know about Sally Norton, she is a good source on this subject, lots of videos on TH-cam here. She has a book also titled Toxic Superfoods. Excellent research. Good luck to you 🫶🏼

      Thats my issues right now. I was eating more beans, sweet potatoes and nuts. All my body pains, my joints especially on my hands are all swollen, red, they crack and bleed. Its so painful. I believe its oxalates.

    Dr. Berry--Sally Norton suggests NOT going cold turkey with oxalates. She says the oxalate dumping is too much for people. Her website is a great resource.

      @@susanbeach9872 Yes, in theory. There's only one way to know if you're going to experience oxalate dumping and that's going cold turkey. Having experienced the pain of dumping, I'd highly recommend having a bit.

    For years I ve been watching and following your advice, I made myself a healthier!
    I m 64 years old and have type 2 diabetes
    I stopped eating carbohydrates like rice, noodles, pasta and any kind of bread and my blood sugar went back to normal
    I also stopped eating anything sweet and stopped using sugar and sweeteners
    You are right! I followed all your advice and I am not craving for sweets anymore!
    By eating only vegetables and animal protein plus bone broth , I feel like I’m in my 30s again!
    You are right about everything!
    I don’t get hungry at midnight and I dont get thirsty that much anymore!
    All the series of videos I watch over and over cured me 👍🏽😊😘
    Every advice you gave is 100 percent true!

    You have just solved a very worrying mystery for me. Last year, January, I started eating a ton of spinach...as I cooked it because it shrinks down was eating a collosal amount, thinking how healthy it was, for weeks and weeks every day. But I started getting very very stiff legs and back....it was agony at times, couldn't stand up straight sometimes, didn't go to the doctor but went to my osteopath and he helped quite a lot but it was still there. Anyway I thought I must have some sort of virus that attacks the muscles. Meanwhile after a couple of months I got fed up with the spinach and stopped eating it. Around the same time all the stiffness began to fade away. Never in a million years would I have put the two things together!! What a relief to finally understand what happened. Thank you 💓
    I also love beetroot but won't be eating that anymore either!

    Eager to see your linked list. In the past I have gotten contradictory information on different "low" oxalate lists that is maddening. I even saw an article saying that rice bran lowered risk, but another list had it as high and to be avoided! At least a magnesium citrate supplement kept me from having any for seven years, but last fall I had two, one needed lithotripsy which was painful in itself.

    Upon moving to a ketogenic diet I began weening myself off of almonds and spinach slowly to prevent "oxalate dumping". Now these foods have finally been eliminated from my carnivore diet. Thank you for all the valuable information you bring to the table, Dr. Berry!

      Yeah, I went to urgent care at my clinic for a respiratory infection. Not only am I oxalate dumping, but getting way too many lectins in my diet. I'm literally swollen up like a tick. Plant based diets aren't for me and I don't mind eating veggies. It's not a chore to eat veggies me. It's harder to fit meat I to every meal than vegetables, but I can't go one this way. The fatigue it just too much.
      I wonder if I'll start feeling better once I add enough animal protein back into my diet? I can't feel much worse than I do right now.

      I also have interstitial cystitis and never linked it to oxalates until I went on the carnivore diet. I know if I eat too many strawberries, or too many tomatoes I can start up the process and suffer for days.

    It's all relative. You may be able to get away with eating food containing oxalates but why would you want to take the chance. It doesn't mean your body isn't affected at all. It still has to use precious body resources to deal with any level of oxalate that is better used for other detox purposes.

    Love your shirt, Dr Berry. My grandparents have always encouraged me to eat spinach. My grandmother often used spinach in her cooking. I don't care for spinach: too grassy. My grandfather suffered numerous episodes of kidney stones. Sometimes the pain was excruciating for my grandfather. My grandma never got kidney stones nor other health issues related to oxalates.

    This is terrific advice, most of which I knew (I was warned by my urologist 16 years ago, when I had to let go of one of my kidneys). But I am planning on sharing it with a family member who suffers from inflammation -- perhaps giving up some (or all) of these foods will help relieve it.

    Gout-like pain in my feet, stiff and painful joints in my 4th and 5th fingers, sharp vulvar pain (which feels much like you have a large paper cut, but you don't), and my first and only episode of "restless leg syndrome" hit me all at once about 10 days into a 2-week Hawaiian vacation. We had stocked up on mixed nuts (lots of almonds and peanuts) and dark chocolate in our hotel room and had enjoyed many trips to a cool kombucha place nearby. Plus we had eaten a lot more popcorn and salads with spinach and beets than we normally do while there. This was the perfect storm for my physiology, apparently. Months later I had a relapse of the gout and joint pain from 'P.B. Fit' peanut butter powder, which resolved as soon as I finished my jar of it.
    (p.s. the Hawaiian dish Poke is pronounced "POH-kay")

    I’ve been carnivore for about 2 years with the exception of earlier this year when I had the covid and the only I ate for 2 or 3 months was mashed potatoes with butter breakfast sausage-natural I’ve been gluten free even longer. Was not a good time coming back from that I gotta say and still craving potatoes but so far I’ve succeeded in not giving in

    I used to think drinking a green smoothie every day was healthy. My doctor's never once mentioned to me that I should stay away from oxalates. I ended up in the emergency room more than once last year and never want to go through that again. Thanks for all your videos you're more helpful than my urologist GP and every other Dr. I've been in contact with.

    This was so informative. I knew I was sensitive to oxalates. But, I had no idea that raisin brand had it ! I had been seeing a urologist for weeks for terrible pain in my bladder. Had a cat scan and the works. Nothing. He couldn’t figure it out. He changed my diet though. So, I quit eating Raisin Bran completely. I would even eat it for lunch . After I quit and changed some of the food I ate. All my pain went away . Now I’m thinking it was the oxalates ! Thanks for this video.

    My husband (54) has had joint pain throughout his body since he was 24. He's a tradie, so always put it down to being up and down ladders, etc. Until he was in his 40s and a rheumatologist diagnosed him with Palindromic Rheumatism (like Rheumatoid Arthritis but without the visual swelling and PA joint paint goes away). Recently found out about oxalates. Who knew in trying to live healthy lives, I was slowly oxalating him and contributing to his constant pain with spinach/raspberry/cacao/almond milk smoothies - all of those things are the some of the highest oxalates!
    I've been removing things over time (we've been gluten/sugar (mostly) and dairy free for years but it really does feel sometimes like we can't eat anything without it coming back to bite us.

    I have MS and I followed the Walls Protocol but I was never good to go on the 3rd level and this diet had 6-9 cups of fruits and veggies per day. I lost lots of weight but my gut was worst than before I think... Started carnivore a week ago and I can see the difference already, lost almost a pound per day and I am not morbidly obese.     Great info, Dr. Berry. But going cold turkey on oxalates is probably not a good idea so I'm gradually decreasing but did cut out the worst offenders immediately (spinach, almonds, beets, etc). Thank you!

    I’ve supplemented high doses of granulated potassium citrate in my drinking water throughout the day for over a month, and my 2 large bladder stones dissolved within 3 weeks. I’m now on low doses for maintenance.

      Yes! Taking Potassium citrate and magnesium citrate are great ways to help dump oxalates and break up stones. 👍🏼 (make sure to not exceed a daily dose of 1000mg of either supplement)

      @@DarthNoshitam No need for any more than that and when we are oxalate poisoned, we are very sensitive to high doses of any vitamin or supplement. It’s best to get the rest from your foods. (Oxalate free foods, of course) Also, avoid supplementing vitamin C as that can exacerbate the issue and even encourage endogenous production of oxalates in some folks.

    Making keto cookies with almond flour gave me a week of gout. First 3 days i couldn't walk. It was insane.

    BINGO!!!!...thank you Dr. Berry. Been on Keto for a year with the last month being BBB&E. Couple days ago, the first signs of a kidney stone hit and I'm like,...WTH? Printed out the expanded list of oxalate foods and there she was...green olives with garlic? Been eating WAY too many of those. Might explain the persistent candida as well as the never ending low back inflammation. Thanks again Dr. Berry...doing a cold turkey stop to see if these issues clear up.

    I’m sensitive to food with oxalates. From trial and error, food includes okra, tomato, egg plant, chocolate and potato. For many years I suffered from extreme itchiness without knowing why till I come to know about oxalates. I still now and then get the symptoms even having tried my best to knowingly avoid food with oxalates and would take an antihistamine pill to treat them.

    I had an 8mm calcium oxalate kidney stone, requiring surgery. Trust me, you don’t want one. I’m darned lucky I didn’t destroy my kidney. I ate spinach daily. . .for my health.

    Wow I am so glad I watched this. I used to make stones, I haven't had any in 12 years. But I now have candida and several conditions you mentioned. I had no idea. I just bought a book with the values. I was wondering why my candida won't improve at all. I have learned so much from you. I am reading the Carnivore Code and he reminded oxalates, I really need to stop consuming them. Thanks again.

    Megadosing vitamin C is also bad since some of it converts to oxalates, so I've read anyways.

    Thank you, dr Ken! I wonder what your view of "dumping" is? There is so much written about it these days, that you should absolutely not go cold turkey etc. Appreciate an answer from you.
