After decades of being vegetarian, I am now carnivore at 64. I also feel better eating only a few low-oxalate vegetables. The problem with feeling good on a plant-based diet is that the damage occurs incrementally, and no test can really prove it one way or another. I believe in listening to your body. Personally, I thrive on animals and animal fat. I wish it were otherwise, as conventional animal farming is a nasty business, and organic meat is pricey.
I hope you go back and read this because I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. I tried it the old way of meat and potatoes along with dairy, fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains and did not avoid processed oil. I have had my share of fast foods, bought in to the new supposed healthy stuff which came through in the 90's such as low fat, low sugar, whole grains, supposed better water from plastic bottles and on and on it went. All lies! All marketing for monetary gain by the huge corporations. Being whole food plant base for the past 3 years I can say that I tried the ASD and it almost had me, but due to my faith which led me to a selected few researchers, doctors, biochemist, cardiac surgeons, I now am taking a personal choice which I will take full responsibility if the rest of my years, God willing will be years to my life and life to my years so many blessings with your personal choice because at the age of 65 now, I've learned that we are on our own to take control of our health and keep researching what foods injures the inner walls (endothelia cells) of our arteries which produce nitrous oxide. Remember this is a band aid driven system we live in, why not get to the core cause of the leading reasons for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia which is becoming epidemic with the younger adults having more and more common symptoms of short term loss of memory. It's all about the endothelia thin layer of cells that line the artery walls.
Everythings in this world form from small little atom which is positive & negative..theres no such thing be a vegetarian better than be a karnivor vice versa.the answer is moderation.
i have been vegan for over 15 years. Since transitioning to keto diet, I no longer have the kidney pain, much of the unexplained severe shoulder pain and I am feeling so much better. I don't think I'll be returning to the vegan way of eating.
It’s not the vegan diet it’s your gut bacteria and the specific foods your eating. Animal protein greatly increases your chance off kidney stones off all kinds.
I had two bouts of kidney stones about 12 years ago. My doctor said to drink water and cut down on oxalate. The only problem I have is no one agrees. I was told no kale, lettuce. blackberries, no sardines...they say I can have potatoes, meat etc. Your list says the opposite. Everything else I agree with you. Who do I believe? Everyone is different. I only mildly cut back on certain foods, like beets, spinach chocolate etc. My main thing I find is the best advice is Drink plenty of water but don't overdo it. I check the color of the urine as you suggested. This is the best advice I have heard so far. I just wish all the experts could come up with a list that we can all agree to so I know. I don't mind cutting out my favorite foods, I can't have gluten. I fought that for years but it really makes me sick. Thank you so much...
One medium baked potato has about 97 mg of oxalate, but most is in the skin. A cups of mashed potatoes about 30 mg. Both are classified as high oxalate by my sources, but it depends on serving size. Using volume (cups) and sizes (medium) makes it difficult for people on a low oxalate diet to limit oxalate to 50 mg a day or less. You are taking the right steps since you have not had a recurrence in 12 years. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Yes no one can agree and the net is full of contradictions: because people differ from one another. Hence, listen to how your body responds to this or that.... it's the only way to know what makes YOU sick. We can only help ourselves. The food and medicine industry has been corrupted by money long ago. It isnt crazy-talk, it's sadly true.
There is a common sense in this video. I did grew up eating spinach that was first boiled then flavored with butter, eggs and cream, delicious. My mother said never to eat spinach without adding dairy, European way. Everyone here in America eats raw spinach, greens etc.... I did it for a while, but went back doing it what I learned from my mother. Be aware of internet doctors that ask you to subscribe and pay patreon fee or ask you to buy supplements !
Adding cheese to spinach, I've never heard of it! Creamed spinach I've heard of but never cheese? It's o.k. if you enjoy it fine I've no reservations. My big question! How much oxalate in blueberries?
I would look up sally k Norton, she does immeasurable amounts of research about oxalates, and the dangers of eating mass amounts of plant foods. She did interviews on the muscle intelligence and peak human podcasts.
Most of Ms. Norton's research is based on cat and mice animal studies that have not been duplicated in humans. She ignores people eating people plant based diets living healthy, active, nearly disease free lives into their 90s and 100s. Comparing a cats carnivore diet to a human plant based diet is not very scientific.
@@DiTuroProductions I used to eat broccoli twice a day, every day and I got kidney stones. I eradicated it from my diet for years but stupidly started eating it regularly again, and I have kidney stones again. I would guess it comes down to genetics, it seems that I am unfortunately one of those who is affected by oxalates. Some people will live healthy lives into their 90’s on a plant based diet, and so will some people who don’t, it’s not a one size fits all.
@@shakermaker6879 I thought broccoli was one of the few vegetables that have low oxalates, how could it lead to kidney stones if broccoli is recommended in a low oxalate diet?
This was informative 👏 but if he told us about other foods that are high in oxalate and how we can use herbs to lower our chances of getting kidney stones I would have appreciated this much more, for those who are getting kidney stones and are having back pain or back side pain you can drink apple 🍎 cider vinegar in water 3 times a day, I have stones and I get back pain to my back on the far side I found out from my doctor that I can control it better if I drink apple cider vinegar in my water 3times a day and if I get tired of the taste add a3 tps. Of lemon juice so that's what I'm doing to keep.it under control, 3 table spoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) in a 8 .Oz of water 3 times a day also I add the lemon juice, it's also good to drink hibiscus tea that also helps remove stones
I have actually found the opposite to be true with oxalates! Experienced much discomfort and then changed my diet to more fruits and veg, spices and even dark chocolate and I felt 100% more healthy, more energy and lot more active. Maybe the portion sizes? also, the high carb breads and eating caused more problems with sugar and glucose, than my new diet and oxalates, although I never overeat anything! Also, staying hydrated is very, very important.
In old timey days when I was a kid Nanna put milk in our tea to prevent the absorption of chemicals and peeled & boiled veggies to death in lots of water for the same reason. We tossed these traditions away for raw veg or stir fried undercooked veg, cows milk switched out for plant milk (high oxalate) and Christmas food like nuts being available all year around.
TOTALLY agree … I’m 1960 born , my mother ( and her mother) cooked as you say …and to be honest we rarely heard of such nonsense. Stones are extremely painful..I know, I’ve had them….but, mainly because I thought I was doing the right thing eating - spinach, raspberries, beetroot, rhubarb, turmeric etc etc ….. you think you’re doing something right, just to find out MOTHER was right !!! 🤗
To date there is no public outcry for doctors to prevent diseases and the U.S. healthcare system is not designed for prevention. Share with us research linking oxalate to damage in the human body.
I've never had kidney stone but I have an oxalate problem. The body robs calcium from bones causing osteoporosis and osteopenia. Remove oxalate from the diet over time can help bones absorb calcium and reverse damaged bones. Oxalate can also be the cause for other chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia and or gut issues leading to inflammation in the body. Does oxalate damage people?.. of course it does! Oxalates are more than just a kidney problem.
You do not explain why you have an oxalate problem. Research shows people eating high oxalate foods live healthy lives into their 80's and 90's. They also eat a lot of high calcium foods and not necessarily with high oxalate foods. "Can also be a cause..." is not the same as is a proven cause. Blood calcium level is part of the CMP blood test.
I think if you eat copious amounts of ANY one food each day, you're asking for trouble. Eat a bit of this, a bit of that like the "older" generations did, they didn't have kidney stone problems.. Move your body, exercise, walk, dance, drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty, reduce portions, fast once in a while, limit sugar, gluten, processed foods, and you should be fine. Take supplements for things you may be lacking in, and don't stress so much about food. This theory of high oxalates doesn't hold up 100% as many cultures eat these "high" oxalate foods in their culture on a regular basis and don't ALL have kidney stones...ie. Asia they eat a ton of tofu/soybeans and green tea 10 cups a day!
I think consuming lemon juice daily, either in the form of lemon water or otherwise, would help to increase the acidity of your urine and therefore help to prevent kidney stones.
There are several ways to reduce the risk of kidney stones. I've included a few in my video about kidney stones facts & myths: th-cam.com/video/4pmu4YtyXJs/w-d-xo.html
İt's all so depressing and confusing. Some of my favourite foods I have been eating regularly are: black pepper, avocado (as we are advised it's the best food out there) almonds, peanut butter and bulgur wheat. I'm currently suffering from a kidney stone and trying to pass it with cider vinegar and lots of water. I was in severe pain a few weeks ago and rushed to hospital. They did nothing apart from tell me I had the stones! And maybe also a kidney infection.
They most of thought your stones were small enough to pass although that is little comfort if they cause severe pain. Your doctor can check for kidney infection and advise if seeing a urologist is warranted. Stone formation is complex affecting about 10% of the population. It is important to stay hydrated. Drinking lots of water is the best way to stay hydrated.
The real problem with high oxalates in food is that it deplete you of minerals . You think you will get a lot of magnesium by eating nuts but the oxalates in the nuts prevent the absorption . So I eat low oxalates food and supplement with important minerals .
Oxalates do bind with some minerals like calcium, but millions of people eat high oxalate foods without mineral depletion. A high oxalate diet can provide all essential minerals, but it takes more planning. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Your right! I haven't been taking my magnesium citrate horse pills lately. When I took those I peeed like Niagara falls and felt great relief when I petered! I'll have to start taking those again. Cause I hear they not put magnesium in drinking water any more from the tap. I may simply have a magnesium imbalance. The apple cider vinegar with lemon juice in the water sounds doable. T hanks for the advice.
After watching many of these oxalate videos, I have decided to take most of the high oxalate foods out of my diet. I won't freak out if there is some spinach in a salad, but I won't try to eat foods like peanuts, almonds chocolate ETC. It's a known poison and some of it can be avoided. I think this approach is prudent.
Everyone's diet comes down to choices. Avoiding high oxalate foods is one choice. I know dozens of people who eat high oxalate foods on a regular basis and feel fantastic. But, that does not mean some people eating the same foods won't experience adverse effects. Each person must listen to their body and adjust their diet according to how they feel.
This information aligns with most of the legit information I have been gathering on kidney stones. Casual research is difficult because there is so much conflicting and incomplete information. This is the first video among MANY I have watched that talks about how the liver produces oxalate in the body. One thing to note - this video suggests drinking tea to hydrate, but my understanding is that black tea and many others contain high levels of oxalates. So confusing!
Thank you and sorry about the confusing regarding drinking tea. Tea leaves can be high in oxalates, but the amount in brewed tea is much lower. Most herbal teas have less than 1 mg per cup (240 ml).
This is very interesting video. Oxalates is something that you shouldn't worry too much about, but they can cause serious problems in people prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones. I eat balanced diet, but my foods that I eat are mostly low oxalate foods, like apples, bananas, and other low oxalate foods. I also eat soured milk (not to be confused with sour milk) and drink yoghurt. But, there are only two high oxalate foods that I eat: dark chocolate and cocoa. These are the two high oxalate foods that I eat, other foods are low oxalate. And I'm healthy person without predisposition for calcium oxalate stones. In terms of cocoa and chocolate, once per week I eat a whole bar (100g) of extra dark chocolate (85% cacao) in one sitting (not every day, but one day per week). In terms of cacao/cocoa powder, I consume only 10g (2 teaspoons), that I put in milk to make hot cocoa (and I drink it unsweetened). I drink only one cup of unsweetened hot cocoa other days when I don't eat chocolate. These are the two foods that are very high in oxalates, and I enjoy in their chocolatey taste. But, I dislike other high oxalate foods. Reason is not only their very high amount of oxalates, but their unappealing and unappetizing taste. For example, spinach tastes terrible with a nasty aftertaste. Instead of it, I eat lettuce (which is low in oxalates, and doesn't leave nasty aftertaste in your mouth like spinach). I'm also planning to include leafy green arugula, which is also low oxalate green food. Apart from spinach, I also dislike Swiss Chard, Rhubarb, Rice Bran, Parlsey (which contains 1600mg of oxalates per 100g), beetroot (I remember when I tried a ½ teaspoon of beetroot juice when I was younger, only to spit it out, since it was almost tasteless). I also don't like kiwi, dates and any, any other high oxalate foods (due to their not so good taste). I drink water as much as possible (1,5 L or more than 2 L in the summer days). Even though I'm healthy person, I watched video from Sally Norton, and while she provides good list of low oxalate foods to eat (and high oxalate foods to avoid) - which is really useful for low oxalate diet, I think that she a little too exaggerates about oxalates. She thinks that high oxalate foods are unhealthy, but that's only true if you eat a pound of them. For example, if you are juicing pounds of spinach or you make a smoothie where the spinach mostly dominates (100ml of that smoothie can contains more than 1000mg of oxalates (which is markedly worse than cocoa and dark chocolate)). Oxalates should not be nutrition concern for healthy people with impeccable health, but for people who are prone to CaOx kidney stones (or have hyperoxaluria), they may benefit from low oxalate diet (where you must limit your oxalate intake to less than 100mg of oxalates (ideally would be less than 50mg of oxalates)). That's all I can say. There's no need to fear about oxalates, however, people who are sensitive to them should be highly cautious.
People at high risk of developing calcium oxalate kidney stones can benefit eating a low oxalate diet. That does mean the 90% who are not at risk will receive similar benefits. Thank for your comment.
Stick to a proper balanced diet and don't overdo it on plants. From the 2015 BMC "Oxalate induces breast cancer" Not risk, or maybe, or might or it could. "We measured oxalate concentration in both human breast tumor tissues and adjoining non-pathological breast tissues. We found that all tested breast tumor tissues contain a higher concentration of oxalates than their counterpart non-pathological breast tissue."
There is also research refuting this finding. One needs to also look at why the body (kidneys) did not remove excess oxalate and other contributing factors.
It is so confusing. The doctor suspect I may have kidney stones but everyone is saying something different about what to eat and not to eat, but I think you explain the situation much better with the food that have oxalates Thank you. God bless you.🙏🙏🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Thank you for the compliment. Kidney stone formation is a complex process. I produced a video providing additional information about kidney stones and preventing stone formation: th-cam.com/video/4pmu4YtyXJs/w-d-xo.html
I'm taking dietary calcium - mostly from yoghurt and soured milk. This is the natural way to get calcium. Supplemental calcium seems too artificial to me.
@@urosrakic6900 I agree...from food....calcium supplements can cause many other problems from what I have read.....& have been pushed for decades....please read up on current research to learn more
I started drinking coffee, low oxalate, with cup of heated raw full fat milk. Also low oxalate. This is a change from the dandy blend and huge amounts of cacao (also with the milk) from just three weeks ago when I found out about oxalates.
The caffeine in coffee is a diuretic, but I am not aware of anyone becoming dehydrated from drinking coffee. Otherwise coffee would have warning labels.
DiTuroProductions well, to take you one step back, you drink coffee you take in caffeine right? Unless you’re drinking decaf. So you know caffeine is a diuretic right? Which moves you towards dehydration. Not sure how to answer this haha, what products have dehydration warning? You might had well ask people to hydrate with beer haha..
Caffeine is a very mild diuretic otherwise it would be a regulated drug. Up to 400 mg a day is considered safe for most people. If caffeine in coffee posed a health risk including dehydration coffee would be banned or decaffeinated. Dehydration occurs when one looses more water then they take in. Water comes from foods and beverages.
DiTuroProductions Whilst I’m glad you are doing more research and getting more informed, I would not recommend coffee as a hydration agent. Your own research now would also mate that clear to you.
By reviewing the data and the fact millions of people including myself eat these foods on a regular basis with no ill effects and live long healthy lives. A person's health and longevity is affected by their total diet and lifestyle.
very good question, here a a peer reviewed study www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3710657/?fbclid=IwAR0M2AV5eMy05sekqExsb_JY_vvhCQKllwABCRcwvFVfwjxmiT1LGSzL9aE
@@DiTuroProductions again this is a sweeping statement. By effects what are you scientifically basing this on? How do you know what is happening at a molecular level?
I reacted to soy milk, then almond milk. Also tomatoes, potatoes, and chia seeds, among other high oxalate foods. No kidney stone issues but I would get arthritic type pains in my neck, right hip, and fingers. I'm ever so much better since decreasing my oxalate intake.
Unless you raise all your own food, eat only organic foods, and avoid all processed foods there are far more synthetic chemicals in prepared foods than glyphosate or being GMO.
I have experienced the same and try to check several sources before producing a video. Even then, the criteria can change as more research studies become available.
@@DiTuroProductions informative video. I was originally looking at oxalate foods for relation to intersistital cystitis & UTI issues. Another channel mentioned these foods and hence i found yours.
Kidney stone formation is a complex process. Excess animal protein may increase the risk but more research is needed. Unless advised otherwise by your doctor, enjoy chicken and salmon in moderation.
Thank you for this video.. Very informative.. I have ckd and ibs so I have been eating a plant based diet...I am so worried now..I have all the symptoms of oxalate toxicity...these symptoms I have had for years... I really don't know what to do or eat now..I had a limited choice before now I should just live on water.. Thank you for sharing your details on the video from Sally Norton...she really freaked me out, I'm so scared now.. Reading most of the comments it's risky business eating a plant based diet which can lead to terrible health problems and death...
IBS can be caused by FODMAPS. I know of no link to oxalate. Having CKD reduces the bodies ability to remove all toxins. A high plant foods diets is linked to better health and longer life not chronic diseases and death. Many low carb diets want people to believe plant foods are poison.
I'm a Japanese. One of our cultural foods is daily miso soup with high oxalate but I have never heard that there are many Japanese people with kidney stones...Why are Japanese ok? Gene?
Kidney stone formation is a complex process and one risk factor is heredity. Some people eating high oxalate food diets never develop kidney stones. I am publishing a new video about kidney stones this September.
I have not watched her videos. I did review her website and read her “commentary” about the dangers of oxalate toxicity. When she stops repeatedly using “may” and starts using “is proven” or other definitive language I may take her seriously.
She's a scaremonger. We shouldn't underestimate oxalates in foods like spinach, but Sally got a little too far about oxalates. People with CaOx kidney stones may benefit from low oxalate diet (and low oxalate diet indeed improves simptoms of problem with oxalates, but the point is that low oxalate diet doesn't address root cause of increased oxalate apsorption in people prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones).
i don’t understand. i’ve been told i should eat more so that’s why i’m trying to find healthy food to eat. but after researching it seems every food has a risk. i don’t know what’s safe to eat so i started eating even less and I’m very underweight.
Thank you for this video. I was rather worried because I regularly eat raw spinach and quite a few nuts and don't drink a lot of water, only 2 cups of green tea a day. To be honest it all seems quite complicated to me.I eat quite a lot of sweet potatoes because I like them and thought they were good for me. Now I'm wondering whether I should stop eating certain foods, so I'm confused.
Nutrition science can be complicated and there is too much misinformation. Most fad diets target people with chronic medical conditions that may or may not be diet related. I like sweet potatoes and spinach and have eaten them for decades with no ill effects. They are good for you.
I think if we took all this information seriously we would be afraid to eat anything. I'm 78 and I ate raw spinach and other vegetables mentioned as long as I can remember,we grew them in the garden no kidney stones so far
So let's see if I got this straight,,,say I eat organic Greek yogurt, w/crushed pecans, w/sliced strawberries, and a couple of squares of dark chocolate in the morning, that's 3 out of 4 with oxalates, but because I eat them with the yogurt ( calcium), that may help lower the affects of the oxalates or build up, of oxalates in my kidneys?
Possibly. It depends on the ratio of oxalate to calcium, protein, and vitamin C. Developing calcium oxalate stones is more complex than eating high oxalate foods.
I don’t know whether or not to avoid combining oxalate with more calcium. I read somewhere that when calcium binds to oxalate it forms sharp crystals that are harmful and cause irritation/inflammation and then others say to add more calcium so that the binding occurs without it going to the kidney
For people without chronic kidney disease or high risk of kidney stones it's a moot point. I've eaten high oxalate foods for decades and have never had a kidney stone or low blood calcium. It depends on your overall diet.
Is important to eat vitamins (food or supplements) that help calcium absorption. I think they are D and K2. If you don't have them, calcium will just accumulate. I recommend you to investigate to get your own conclusions.

I think everyone who is concerned about plants and how they protect themselves should read the book by Lierre Keith - the Vegetarian Myth - or look her up on YT. Plants are fantastic and we need to know how they protect themselves against being eaten. They produce many chemicals in their defense which are more or less toxic to us humans.
There is a significant difference between truly toxic plants like hemlock and spinach and other plant foods consumed worldwide with few if any adverse effects and provide a wealth of health benefits. That does not mean all plant foods are 100% safe for everyone. Each person should evaluate and take responsibility for their health and what foods are best for them.

May the Vit. C supplements increase the formation of kidney stones ? In witch way ? Thank you in advance
Thank for subscribing. Stone formation is very complex, but something is not right if you have 10 cm stones. 10 mm is cause for concerns. Eating a low oxalate diet may help prevent large stones. Take care.

I could not find specific oxalate data for those types of spinach. They do contain oxalic acid. Consume them in moderation if you are at high risk of having kidney stones.
This information is just slanted toward kidney stones; oxalates cause a multitude of other problems - for instance in the formation of osteophytes which I am loaded with. Since I cut out the massive amount of spinach and yams that I ate, along with a lot of other high oxalate foods, I have less pain and can actually weight bear on my foot which I could not before without excruciating pain.
I am glad your dietary changes have relieved your osteophytes (bone spurs) pain, but it does not establish cause and effect. You've also eliminated 100's of other chemical compounds that may contribute to your condition.
All this oxalate-fear is blown out of proportion. There are millions of people who eat vegetables and have absolutely no pepper with kidney stones. There is way more to kidney stones than just oxalates.
Most food and diet experts agree minimally processed foods and whole grains are better than highly processed foods. Everything in moderation and avoid foods that cause serious symptoms. A low oxalate diet may benefit people with kidney disease or kidney stones.
Most people around the world eat what they have been eating for thousands of years. It is only Americans that have little or nothing they can eat without developing chronic diseases.
Everyday I'm consuming seeds which been soaked overnight and then I'm having it in morning with empty stomach..!!as I heard seeds have very high oxalate..!! 😔😔tell me pls..is that true.??can I continue consuming seeds everyday.???!🧐🧐😟🤔🤔
Nuts and seeds are classified as high oxalate. Many people eat seeds on a regular basis with no ill effects. If you've had kidney stones, reducing the amount of seeds in your diet may help prevent future stones.
Ok so the body makes oxaltes. The body also makes LDL top. Neatly every doctors says that's bad. They are wrong ofcourse, but if one has IBS oxaltes should be eliminated as much as possible. I've had IBS and now eating mainly meat. IBS now not a big problem. So why am I wrong? You dmsay balanced diet, I say eat what makes you healthy. My choice!
Very useful and informative video. Why body (liver)creates oxalate? Is under research , Up to then, better to have a balanced and intutional diet but have touch of latest knowledge. Being Vegan is not bad, but you must be aware of the chemical realities of the life. Diat and food is unavoidable but being an intutional , natural and knowledge full about your consumption , may prove better. Thanks for uploading this video, thanks.
What about the phenomenon of Oxalate dumping when stopping a high oxalate diet? Sounds odd to me. Where, why are they stored , considerig your liver manufactures oxalate?? 🙏🏻👹🏋🏻🏊♀️
I am not aware of any controlled studies confirming oxalate dumping. The symptoms could be caused by depletion or low levels of essential vitamins and minerals. The theory is oxalate crystals can be deposited anywhere and damage joints, cells, and tissues. And that may be true for some people. The human body is so complex and diets vary so widely it is difficult confirming the health risks with most anti-nutrients. Thank you for your comment.
I was watching a keto-cult video were the maker was very worried about plant anti-nutrients and toxics and advocating eating mostly animal based diet. The evils of oxalates was a big reason for eating animals.
Animal foods are a good source of protein and some essential vitamins, but millions of vegans and vegetarians approve animal foods are not essential and most are healthier and out live people eating a high meat diet.
I agree with this video. I never had kidney stones or calcium oxalates in my lifetime. But suddenly many crystals of calcium oxalates show on my UA report. I have been fermenting beets in water for 5 days drinking the beet juice (as a probiotic) and eating the pickled beets everyday for lunch for like continuous 2-3 months. Also, been having Almond milk after soaking 32 almonds overnight once in 2-3 days - In addition, soaking walnuts, almonds and pumpkin seeds and been having that on alternate days. Besides, drinking fresh ash gourd juice with 1/2 cup of potato juice everyday. Could that be the reason for these calcium oxalates?
I am not a dietitian and not knowing your overall health it is difficult to conclude what is causing increased calcium oxalates. Eating foods high in oxalates could be the reason or it could be one or more other factors.
@@DiTuroProductions I've been plagued with kidney stones for more than 40 years. At first, it was recommended to just avoid a few obvious high oxalate foods such as beets and spinach and drink plenty of water. Now, more knowledge has accumulated and in addition to avoiding the usual high oxalate foods, also take calcium in the form of milk during your meals. I'm lactose intolerant so I use cheese or yogurt. Both have 0 oxalates. The idea is the calcium binds to the oxalates and eliminated without going through the kidneys. Keep in mind some cheese is very high in salt and salt also contributes to forming kidney stones. So, throw out that salt shaker but keep the pepper shaker, it has 0 oxalates. Oh and instead of drinking plenty of water, drink lots and lots and lots of water. When you've drank enough, drink some more.
Thankyou voice of Sanity on Oxalates. Will continue to enjoy my Hot chocolate and stay hydrated. Did have a friend that got kidney stones after juicing lots of Spinach. Moderation advised. 🙏🏻👹🏋🏻🏊♀️

The amount of oxalate in a food depends on serving size. Some websites claim cooked broccoli is low oxalate (9 to 15 mg per 100 g). Others simply claim it is high oxalate. 100 g of cooked spinach has over 500 mg. If the 9 to 15 mg values are accurate, broccoli is very low oxalate. Thank you for your comment.
Great information ok it depends on several factors such as dehydration, genetics ,physiology or biochemistry of individual all well explained in videos plus every individual has to undergo medical chekup of their kidney once in a year or how frequently kidney stone formation takes place ok eat less be healthy over weight is dangerous ok

Most people do not experience dehydration from drinking 1 or 2 cups of tea or coffee and they are healthier than sugar sweetened energy and sports drinks. The alternate is to stay hydrated by drinking water.
My dad can't eat red meat anymore it give him the runs so we have him mostly vegetarian with the exception of eggs and once in a while chicken and he does much better now
Cooking vegetables reduces oxalate and some vitamins and minerals, but it also increases the bodies ability to absorb the remaining nutrients. Cooked foods are easier to digest than raw foods.
Plant foods have 100's of chemicals like oligosaccharides (sugar) that are not digested and become food for gut bacteria. The same with fiber. Soluble fiber is fermented by gut bacteria producing gas. In both cases, the gas, bloating and discomfort are not due to oxalates. Vegan diets provide more soluble fiber and oligosaccharides than other diets.
LOL...hardly. I've never seen ads that even cover this topic. Oxalates are explained by the NCBI, several medical schools, and the National Kidney Foundation.
The companies that sell these foods have to address any negative issue that comes up. Oxalates included. Believe what u wnt to believe but the only thing i trust when it comes to food is my own trial and error
Kidney stone formation is complex and some people have a higher risk. I produced a video with basic information about kidneys and prevention: th-cam.com/video/4pmu4YtyXJs/w-d-xo.html
Thank you some non biased info. That Sally Norton acts like Oxalates are like cyanide and ignores all the problems the carnivore diet brings like destroying your micro biome
You're welcome. I know low carb diets are very popular in the U.S., and some foods can cause severe symptoms even death for some people, but the overwhelming data and physical evidence indicates diets high in plant foods are linked too long, healthy lives.
@@DiTuroProductions Then why was I always in pain? I ate only greens, beans and lots of spinach smoothies and was in severe pain most of the time. Until I started adding animal foods in about 11 days ago, I am not having the kidney pain and the shoulder pain is so much better. I would just like to see some bonafide research that shows eating animal foods are not good and eating greens are better; plants do not like to be chewed!
There is an abundance of research including an article in the January 2020 issue of National Geographic showing people eating plant based diets tend to live healthier lives. This does not mean eating a 100% plant food diet. And some plant foods can cause serious symptoms. Diets are not one size fits all. Millions of people eat beans and spinach on a regular bases with no ill effects.
I agree. I feel that Sally Norton exaggerates about oxalates. Yes, oxalates can be problematic for sensitive people (to those who are prone to kidney stones), but otherwise, people with impeccable health shouldn't worry too much about them (unless they consume pounds of high oxalate foods). In fact, moderation is key. One cup of raw spinach is definitely enough. Another way to counteract oxalates is to add yoghurt to spinach. That's it. There's no need to exaggerate about oxalates.
Foods affect people differently. Some people have severe food allergies while most do not. Some people are highly sensitive to FODMAPs while many are not. The fact some people find relief eating a low oxalate diet does not guarantee everyone will. Do what is best for you.
Perfectly fine. Dairy has no oxalates. In fact, a bit of dairy, which has calcium, should be eaten with high ox foods as it will bind with the oxalic acid and your body will excrete it.
I appreciate the information but he’s telling people to drink tea and coffee all day long which is dehydrating. Some of this seems like old information. Not sure if I’m trusting it
This video does not tell people to drink coffee and tea all day. They are recommended beverages to stay hydrated. Caffeine increases urination helping flushes waste from the kidneys. People become dehydrated by ignoring the thirst reflex whether they drink coffee, tea, or only water, or by not drinking enough fluids during hot weather.
It is important to listen to your body. Some people eat a plant based diet and live a heathy life into their 100s. Others do not.

There are many dietary options between vegan and keto. Everyone must decide what is best for them and their health.
Did you had thinning of hair and weaker teeth?
I experienced that when I was vegan. Thank god I’m not anymore !
It’s not the vegan diet it’s your gut bacteria and the specific foods your eating. Animal protein greatly increases your chance off kidney stones off all kinds.
What type of vegetable foods do you eat?

Yu r right, cheese used to be added to spinach
Adding cheese to spinach, I've never heard of it! Creamed spinach I've heard of but never cheese? It's o.k. if you enjoy it fine I've no reservations. My big question! How much oxalate in blueberries?
if you ever eat out at some restaurants you'll find that they serve spinach queso dip and some of them. Spinach and cheese is yummy together
DiTuroProductions alright, well I’m going to keep eating the meats, dairy, and vegetables that have been saving my life. Enjoy your grains and beans.
@@DiTuroProductions I used to eat broccoli twice a day, every day and I got kidney stones. I eradicated it from my diet for years but stupidly started eating it regularly again, and I have kidney stones again.
@@KyndalTheMeister do you drink mostly (spring) water as your source of adequate hydration?
Thank you for sharing.
I had the same experience.
Some people prefer well cooked vegetables and others prefer slightly cooked or raw. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Show me a doctor who will help with oxalate damage. These money grabbers would rather operate and collect the ching kaching.
To date there is no public outcry for doctors to prevent diseases and the U.S. healthcare system is not designed for prevention. Share with us research linking oxalate to damage in the human body.
@@DiTuroProductions The healthcare system is designed for big PHARMA.
Almost every sector of the U.S. economy has a special interest. I know doctors who hate the system of corporate medicine.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
That's what I do - lemon juice in water.
@@michelleduncan9965 Same here, i drink 2 liters of water daily with little squeeze of lemon juice and apple cider vinegar
@@DiTuroProductions Yes but when we getting older we have more difficult to uptake enough nutrition.
I actually have high magnesium and I eat a lot of oxalate foods.
Brocc and cauliflower may be low in oxalates, but have goitrigens which are destructive to the thyroid. Need to cook them, to avoid that problem.
Foods high in goitrogens can interfere with the thyroids use of iodine and hormone release.
I agree, I don't want to end up at 65 years old with my thyroid , brain, and kidneys shot.
I'm a couple years away from 65 and to date have no problems in any of those areas.
@@DiTuroProductions Thanks for the clarification!
@@DiTuroProductions good to know. I like Yerba mate tea. Was told teas are high oxalate and to avoid .

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Thank you.
The fear mongering of eating vegetables was so crazy
People at high risk of developing calcium oxalate kidney stones can benefit eating a low oxalate diet. That does mean the 90% who are not at risk will receive similar benefits. Thank for your comment.
I think in the way we balance our foods is the secret to healthy life
All extremes are bad
Thanks for a balanced approach
You are welcome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
If you can eat that balanced, good for you and everyone like you.
But a lot of us are plenty limited in what we can eat/drink.... it makes us sick.
Correlation does not equal causation.
Please do not recommend calcium supplements in general.....they have been shown to cause harm in many ways
I do not recommend any dietary supplement unless there is medical justification. Most healthy people do not need supplements.
That makes sense. I have never seen a person who loves eating almonds, spinach and beans ends up getting kidney stones.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I'm that person.
Me I loved deluxe nuts since I quit no stones

So coffee prevents dehydration? You might want to re examine this
The caffeine in coffee is a diuretic, but I am not aware of anyone becoming dehydrated from drinking coffee.
Your concern should extend to the dozens of popular highly caffeinated beverages on the market.
Too low a sodium diet is a problem too.
Moderation is the key.
Moderation and healthy kidneys.
How do you account for the sharp almost knife like shape of oxalates? How could that NOT do damage to other tissues and organs?

Reading most of the comments it's risky business eating a plant based diet which can lead to terrible health problems and death...
IBS can be caused by FODMAPS. I know of no link to oxalate. Having CKD reduces the bodies ability to remove all toxins. A high plant foods diets is linked to better health and longer life not chronic diseases and death. Many low carb diets want people to believe plant foods are poison.

Eating less is best, fasting is even better, good for your pocket and the body.

@@DiTuroProductions well that's interesting 🤔
Pecans are low in oxalates. Almonds and some other nuts are high.
Right.

There are discrepancies about oxalate amount in some foods, like broccoli, legumes, kale, avocados, white potatoes, blueberries and cucumber.
Most foods have a range for the amount of nutrients and antinutrients. It is simpler giving an average or maximum.
@@DiTuroProductions Yes, now I totally avoid spinach , almonds , rabarbaro, red potatoes. Reduced portion of cucumber, carrots, white potatoes, celery nuts chocolate (10 grams) , turmeric, , cinnamon, clove , cinnamon to 1 or 2 grams. In this way I am taking between 60 and 150 mg of oxalates per day.

Oxalates are not a thing?
Yeah try going for eating tahini in big amount and tell me what do you feel in your kidney.
I felt absolutely killed.
Oxalates are real and sesame seeds (tahini) are high in oxalates. Tahini is usually used in small not large amounts. Your symptoms may not be due to oxalate. Sesame seeds can trigger an allergic reaction in some people.
@@DiTuroProductions i don't have any allergy
I ate them my entire life just less
If it was allergy i woul've stopped immediately, let alone it would be systemic.
The thing is i wanted to switch into keto diet and drank like a bottle of it and almond butter and uncooked spinach
my kidney hurted that i woke from sleep!
I drank apple cider lemon+berries multiple times
They relieved me
was about to stop keto but searched for kidney friendly fats (olive oil, coconut) maybe they helped too
Edit: i ate tons of dark choc too which is high on oxalates.
Hello I dicovered your channel just today. I'm a oxalate-calcium stone maker. I have 10 cm stones in my kidneys. Doctors never told me about oxalate issues. I'm taking also vitamine C supplements.
Take care.
i had sonography last week and 5 mm stone found on upper ureter ...since then i m trying gather lot of infos. ....one of the common remedy to flush stone out of urethra is what i am hearing and watching at many sources is taking lemon water everyday [citric acid] and active lifestyle i.e. cardios ,,runing ..will it work or should i go for laser operation ....suggest
5mm (0.2 in) is a large stone. I'm not a doctor and cannot give you medical advice. Your doctor can access your risk of passing the stone.
A great video, thank you !!
You are welcome!
You should make sure to mention the need to drink water with lemon juice for certain individuals suffering from hypocitraturia.
Thank you for sharing.
Sir what about malabar spinach and water spinach oxalate?
I could not find specific oxalate data for those types of spinach. They do contain oxalic acid. Consume them in moderation if you are at high risk of having kidney stones.
@@DiTuroProductions tq
Benefits of being poor, you won't eat anything that causes such headache.
(Gone through uretrascopy last week for 13mm stone 😭)
I had a 14mm stone.
I agree 😂
Basically, some people are genetically predisposed to Oxalate issues. I drank a spinach smoothie, I nearly fainted. Maude STephens.
That is a possibility.
Absolutely. Some people really have predisposition to get calcium oxalate stones. Luckily, that's not my case.
Studies reviewed...nice to have it in one place Well done, thanks!
You're welcome.
Sounds completely opposite of everything I've read
It depends on the source of your information.
@@DiTuroProductions definitely and the motives and education behind the source. I'll go with the majority.
All this oxalate-fear is blown out of proportion. There are millions of people who eat vegetables and have absolutely no pepper with kidney stones. There is way more to kidney stones than just oxalates.

It's like everything is bad for you and then it's not and then it is and then it's not. Just don't eat is the real answer 🙄
Most food and diet experts agree minimally processed foods and whole grains are better than highly processed foods. Everything in moderation and avoid foods that cause serious symptoms. A low oxalate diet may benefit people with kidney disease or kidney stones.
Yes a comment, all risks cross each other so there is nothing left to eat
Bran flakes every time ?
My advice would be to try these foods and see how you get on
Good advice. And, it is simple eliminating one food for a period of time to see if it produces any positive health benefits.
very good point about plant base diet, thank you I did not know that protein had oxalate, and the liver makes it
Protein does not have oxalate. A high protein diet can increase the risk of kidney stones. Thank you for your comment.
My choice!
Everything taken in excess is harmful even if they have nutrient benefits. I would suggest 'moderation' and eat a mix of everything instead.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Is Milk low calorie?
Nonfat milk has about 90 calories per cup (240 ml) and 8 grams of protein, whole milk 160 calories.
This is the video to share on oxalates, gets to the meat of the issue, not fear mongering or misinformation.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I have never had a stone. I feel better after eliminating all the very high oxalate food. I feel a lot better.
There are many reasons besides oxalate for restricting foods in ones diet.
Very useful and informative video.
Why body (liver)creates oxalate? Is under research ,
Up to then, better to have a balanced and intutional diet but have touch of latest knowledge.

YES!!!!!
I would cut out beets, almonds, and potatoes in any form and drink plenty of water every day. Coming from a kidney stone sufferer.
That's alot daily ... I eat those stuff twice a fortnight
Thankyou voice of Sanity on Oxalates. Will continue to enjoy my Hot chocolate and stay hydrated. Did have a friend that got kidney stones after juicing lots of Spinach. Moderation advised. 🙏🏻👹🏋🏻🏊♀️

@DiTuroProductions Thank-you for detailed response. Will remain skeptical and require " human trials " to draw a conclusion on oxalate but consume oxalate in moderation. "The sky is falling", Chicken Little. 🙏🏻👹🏊♀️🏋🏻
After watching literally hundreds of videos on high oxalate foods I am yet to see broccoli on any list!
Thanks guy

Great information ok it depends on several factors such as dehydration, genetics ,physiology or biochemistry of individual all well explained in videos plus every individual has to undergo medical chekup of their kidney once in a year or how frequently kidney stone formation takes place ok eat less be healthy over weight is dangerous ok

I get everyone not wanting a kidney stone. I want a diet that promotes good healthy kidneys in general.
Diets that promote overall good health promote kidney health. Staying hydrated also helps promote kidney health by reduce the risk of stones.

tea and coffee for dehydration?? I don't agree that would deplete water instead!
Most people do not experience dehydration from drinking 1 or 2 cups of tea or coffee and they are healthier than sugar sweetened energy and sports drinks. The alternate is to stay hydrated by drinking water.
That's a myth. The water in coffee/tea offsets the diretic effect.

When you boil vegetables, you also release many of the nutrients and vitamins into the water also🙄
That is true, but the remaining nutrients are more easily digested compared to obtaining the same amount of nutrients from raw foods.
I read a lot of content on this topic...Do you maybe know does the chicken have a lot of oxalates?
Meat, fish, and poultry do not have oxalate, but research indicates high protein diets increases the risk of all types of kidney stones.
@@DiTuroProductions thank you for the answer!
every thing is correct nfusing.some say donot cook or over cook vegitable but u say if you vook vegiyou get low oxylate
Cooking vegetables reduces oxalate and some vitamins and minerals, but it also increases the bodies ability to absorb the remaining nutrients. Cooked foods are easier to digest than raw foods.
Do you have a favorite kidney stone diet cookbook that comes up with low oxalate recipes that you were aware of ?
I am not aware of a published low oxalate cookbook. You can use the foods in this video to reduce oxalates in your diet.
Why do I get severe gut pain and bloating when I eat high oxalate foods?. I was whole food vegan but in constant pain and bloating really sick.
@@DiTuroProductions I was extremely sick and unhealthy eating a whole vegan diet.
There is alot of false information on this video
The information is accurate based on the latest medical research and practices available in the U.S.
You mean its based on food advertising
LOL...hardly. I've never seen ads that even cover this topic. Oxalates are explained by the NCBI, several medical schools, and the National Kidney Foundation.
The companies that sell these foods have to address any negative issue that comes up. Oxalates included. Believe what u wnt to believe but the only thing i trust when it comes to food is my own trial and error
NO
How about if you want to avoid stones to begin with!
R there oxalates in weed?
I am not a aware of any study measuring oxalates in weed.
All so confusing Sally Norton explained her horror story with oxalates in her book.
Foods affect people differently. Some people have severe food allergies while most do not. Some people are highly sensitive to FODMAPs while many are not. The fact some people find relief eating a low oxalate diet does not guarantee everyone will. Do what is best for you.
Is colostrum safe to take ?
I've never heard of it. Perhaps another viewer has.
Perfectly fine. Dairy has no oxalates. In fact, a bit of dairy, which has calcium, should be eaten with high ox foods as it will bind with the oxalic acid and your body will excrete it.
Thanks
You're welcome.
