Toyota Tacoma | Diff Breather Mod | Diff Breather Extension | (2017 Tacoma)

  • In the Garage today we are extending the tiny Diff breather on the rear axle. The rear axle diff breather on the tacoma is super small and right above the diff. By comparison, all of my prior jeeps had longer/higher diff breather set ups. The reasoning for extending the hose and re-locating the breather is to try and ensure no mud or water gets into the diff. Many people argue it can't happen, but I have seen enough diffs full of muddy water. I relocated my breather to the the gas cap area. I kept calling it the gas can in the video, sorry. Its a good spot for it so you can see it every time you fill up the tank. Some people install it behind the tail light. That will not work for me. I'm to lazy to remove the light every month to inspect it. This mod is useful if you spend time in muddy areas or have to regularly go through puddles above the center line of the wheels. This is just cheap insurance and a fun little project to protect that diff. Thanks for watching, all links below.

    I did a version of this mod without drilling a hole through the gas filler neck skirt. I had removed forward bed tie-downs so the nut-certs were available for use from the back side. Upon removing the skirt around the gas filler neck, then you can clearly see and access the nut-certs. I used an 8mm screw and fashioned a hose clamp from some of that metal plumbers strap (metal tape with holes) and attached it up as high as I could get it, right up to the top edge under the bed (well above where it would be if you put it in the gas filler neck skirt. It was simple and quick. FYI, if you want to keep the tie-downs, get a longer 8mm screw then you can use a nut from the back side.. Zero drilling and the vent is up very high. Just my two cents.

    Good info. If I had thought of this before I relocated the factory valve to another location, I might have given this a try. Easy and guessing about a six inches higher than my location. Not sure it would work on my vehicle since it is not a Taco.

    Hey brother, one of the reasons for doing the diff breather is, not only to relocate the breather valve (stock) higher and further away from submersion but also to replace the valve (stock) with a free flowing one like the ARB. Otherwise reusing the same check valve will still cause the same sucking action of water/mud into the diff through the axel seals when a hot diff is dunked in cold water/mud. With a free flowing valve, the pressure in the diff will remain constant and there will be no change in pressure and therefore no sucking in water/mud.
    You Dont have to believe me lol but check it out for yourself. Just though I'd point it out in case you didnt know.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I will look into it. So what you are saying is I should also replace the stock valve I relocated into the gas cap? The new union at the diff is free flow. Thanks for the heads up.

    • @AnthrozoologyTV
      @AnthrozoologyTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ClassyTacos yes replace the stock check valve with a free flowing valve. When you submerged the hot diff in cold water the change in temp will still cause the pressure to suck the check valve (stock) down/closed and that pressure could cause the axel seals to pull water in and the diff breather may not work as intended. With a free flowing valve at the end of that hose the air pressure in the diff will equalize with the atmospheric pressure and no "sucking in" will happen at drastic temp changes when submitting the hot diff in mud or water

    • @AnthrozoologyTV
      @AnthrozoologyTV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ClassyTacos @Overlandbound explains it much better in his video. He runs the ARB kit, I do as well. I'm sure you can find an alternative free flowing valve and use that just as well since you already ran the hoses and a new union

    • @oldmanhare
      @oldmanhare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AnthrozoologyTV I see tons of these vids that should be removed or edited. Relocating a check valve (pressure release valve) does nothing to keep water out. It is a release valve. It needs to be replaced with a breather of some sort. Literally dozens of these vids that mislead folks into thinking they are doing anything to keep water out. The idea of a breather is to prevent a vacuum in the diff that can draw in water through seals and bearings when the diff is cooled rapidly in water/mud. Just moving the check valve effectively does nothing to prevent that vacuum.

    not sure if you have a video on it or not, but what is the purpose of the diff breather outside of showing if the diff is flooded and what do you do if it does fill with water? I know mud is horrible for stuff like this and I am sure the answer is to take it apart, clean, regrease and run but idk. I am just beginning my offroad adventuring and am trying to learn as much as I can about issues that may arise and how to fix em. Thx!!

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The purpose of a breather is to allow the diff in this case to release pressure which builds in the diff. For example, as the diff gets hot with rotation and is cooled suddenly by water like hitting a puddle. It gives the air in the diff a place to escape as the fluid changes temps/expands. I'm no expert. That is how I understand it. Thanks for watching.
