Thanks for this option to an ARB Breather folks for two reasons: 1) we live in an extreme cold climate and the ARB plastic hoses would likely pose a problem eventually. 2) have watched a few of these vids and no one ever teed in the rear diff locker breather! Like the tip with using anti-seize on the differential fitting too.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my login password. I appreciate any help you can give me
@Thomas Samuel Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

@@WanderlostOverland Thank you very much. You guys have inspired my current build in many ways, so thank you for all the effort I know goes into each video. I’ll tell ya, “WE’VE GOT A BLEEDER” still cracks me up. Good stuff!
Great videos guys! Very well put together and informative, make for easy to follow. Will be doing this mod and many more on my new baby, FJ 😀. Thanks and keep it up!
Still the most informative video there is on this. I see your guys rigs driving down I90 on occasion! I was wondering if it’s possible for the red filter used as the breather to allow water inclusion? Possibly during a car wash when water gets blasted from underneath? Not sure if there’s anything from stopping small amounts of water that would happen to get in the engine bay to penetrate through and into the lines. Thanks!
Your videos are always so informative and fun to watch! Do I need to waterproof the brass tee by wrapping it in a waterproof tape or is it safe to leave it bare?
I love you all's videos. I am hoping you can educate me. I am new to the overlanding community. On a 5th Gen 4Runner, is the rear diff and rear locker the only things that needs a breather?
It's been a while, but I believe there was enough existing tubing from the breather. Teflon tape isn't really required but will make the fittings easier to take apart later.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing this. I'm leaning toward your DIY route over the kit route. Do you have the part numbers (or recommendations on sourcing) the t bar bracket and the 2x1/4" and 1x1/8" brass connectors that you reference at the 3:15 spot? Thanks in advance!
Wanderlost Overland thanks. I appreciate the response. I think I am going to run 2 lines, skip the brass T. Goal is to run and mount them behind the rear tail light (driver side). Thoughts welcome... I had 1 question when you discuss the 2nd breather, the rear locker, so did you plug the fuel line in directly or use another Toyota OEM union piece? Apologies in advance. I have watched that part a few times and could not make it out. Love the video. Thanks again for sharing!
you did it the way I think it should be done with a filter on the end instead of the one-way diff breather valve. My idea is to use an inline fuel filter.
On a couple of the forums people suggested that for proper road behavior you need 4+ of positive caster on the alignment. Can you please tell us what you are using on the alignment specs?
We've been setting it at 3.2-3.5 for the past few years with great results. In a month or so we'll be switching the springs and shocks to ToyTec's Aluma Series, and with that we're going to try out 4 degrees and see how we like it.
Getting ready to finally do this mod folks and have a question: why not just remount the stock breather vent with a female x barbed adapter at the end of that handy dandy fuel line?
The stock vent is designed to suck air back in VERY slowly. In that case you would still have the problem of sucking water in past the axle seals when going through deep water.
Hey! Great job on this one. I am trying to figure out if I can use a PVC fuel line here in Canada’s cold weather. You recommend to stay away from plastic. Did you mean just the clear plastic fuel lines or did you include PVC in that comment? Thanks for your help and keep up the good work!
@@WanderlostOverland If you didn't want to run the diff breather all the way to the engine bay or to the gas cap could you just extend the diff breather up next to the locker breather? (I understand you would have to use the same type of original breather but it would be higher, if say you weren't doing any really deep water crossings) The 18' 4R we have is going to be mainly road and "light off road" but would like the additional peace of mind for crossing water when the streets potentially flood (has been happening more and more). The FJ build that will be a different story! PS Love the videos!
Do you think this is really necessary? Toyota is pretty smart folks. These vehicles are use around the world in awful conditions. I find it hard to believe their breather would allow much water intrusion. Good video!! You all do very nice job. (0:
Ive seen countless videos similar to this... preaching the idea of extended breathers. Small investment/large payoff. Yes, toyota is smart. They build their vehicles for the average joe that doesn't offroad/watercross. Saves them money to keep those breather lines functional but short. More line is more money.
It’s just cost cutting. Even my old ‘02 Pathfinder runs the breather up into the body. Drowning your rear diff is rare but would be your cost, not Toyota’s
I felt dirty just watching this. Thanks for providing additional detail regarding the rear locker breather too. I read about this in the t4r.org website but didn't see any photos to show what they were talking about. Until now.

You guys are great! Videos are quite entertaining! Keep them coming!
I just did this yesterday with the ARB kit!
Is the 1/8 end of the brass T used to tap into the stock locker breather line? Thanks for the great video and option to ARB’s plastic line.
Yes, it is

The tiny amount of water that may get past the filter element would be insignificant.

wondering what the part numbers are for the brass t ???? and why are 2 ends 1/4 and one end 1/8

It won't hurt anything to leave it exposed.
Thank you for the reply!
I love you all's videos. I am hoping you can educate me. I am new to the overlanding community. On a 5th Gen 4Runner, is the rear diff and rear locker the only things that needs a breather?
Thanks for watching! Yes, those are the only two. The transmision, transfercase, and front diff breathers are up high enough already.
Subbed! Doing this for my Tacoma soon!
Did the locker breather require extra tubing or do you just tap into existing tube from the locker?
Is Teflon tape required for the brass fittings?
It's been a while, but I believe there was enough existing tubing from the breather. Teflon tape isn't really required but will make the fittings easier to take apart later.

Do the tacomas have a second diff lock breather valve? I have a 2016 tacoma and i dont see one on mine.
If it's equipped with an E-locker it should have one mounted on the frame crossmember.

How is that brass T holding up over the years? Wonder if exposure of it to the elements salt etc will cause it to degrade?
Still good as new!

We recommend rubber lines. Any kind of plastic would get brittle over time in very cold temps.
Did the mod! Thanks!
What size is the nut that fits on the bolt coming out of the fire wall?
I'm not sure. We just dug through our bucket of nuts and bolts and found one that fit. :)
How critical is it to also vent the locker? I did the diff only, so do I need to tie in the locker breather now? What do I risk by not? Thanks!
Since it's up higher most people can get by without venting.

Does this "Air intake valve fit a 2018 Toyota 4-runner or is this for a FJ Cruiser? Will they fit both?
They fit both, Tacoma too.
LOL the wife having fun ha ha.
Where did you get that t brass? All I can find are 1/4" for all three legs.
We had one on order through Amazon but it never showed up. We got the pieces to make this one up at Lowe's.

I think it's called Spectra or something like that. We found it at one of the big chain auto parts stores.
was this Mod done to the FJ cruiser as well?
Yup, we tied in all the breathers under the hood too.
Will this give you 5 more ponies with that filter? J/K Great mod!

How do you keep water out of the transmission
The vents for the transmission, trans-case, and front diff. are up high in the engine bay.
