  • Update 03/20/21--
    It has come to my attention that measuring 3 inches down from the top of the removable panel might be too tight for newer model Tacomas, so I recommend measuring down to 3 1/2 inches from the top of the removable rear panel. This will ensure you clear the bottom of the cup holders. Thank you.
    In todays video we are installing a Blue Sea Systems dual USB charger for the rear passengers. This way my kids can charge/use their devices on long trips without occupying the front USB port. The install took right around 45 minutes with no issues. Also, no need to remove the entire center console just the back piece for the charger and the front shifter trim. There are many options for a dual USB charger, I went with the Blue Sea Systems as they have a history of working with no issues. They are more expensive than the Amazon/Ebay ones. Overall the USB port looks factory and it works. I'm excited to free up my front USB port. Thanks for watching! Links to everything I used down below.

    Hello everyone thanks for watching! I was asked a question on the forums and wanted to share the answer here as well. I was asked if the port comes into contact with the back seats when the back seats are folded down. The port it self will not come into contact with the back seats. It does appear very tight if you wanted to have the seats down and charge a device. It might be to tight without a 90 degree USB charger.

    Used a different brand USB charger & yes 3 inches down is quite tight. Also the 2021 SR5 wiring does not connect like you showed (different type connector) but 12V is still the yellow wire. I made the hole 1 1/8 inches and no trimming required.

    Those wires look pretty thin. The phones these days need more power for a faster charge. I wish car makers would think about that and use a larger gauge wire. I think I'll run new wire and add a port on each side instead of the middle. 1 12v connector and 1 multi usb A usb C.

    • @ClassyTacos

      Make sure the cig lighter is getting power, then make sure power is getting to your USB charger. Sometimes the splice connectors don't lock into the wire just right. Also, test it with the vehicle on. It would be easy to test it with a test light. Your looking to find where the power has stoped flowing.

  • @kevrobinson2000
    @kevrobinson2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great setup and really appreciate your step by step instructions! What do you think about using the cigarette lighter inside the center console and attaching a USB charger and 2 USB cables? Then, I could cut a hole through the back of the console like you did and run the USBs through a black grommet for a clean look? I would love your thoughts on if this would work? Its not as good of a setup as yours, but I think it would work?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Robinson if you plan on using a USB plug in type charger for the cigarette lighter with cables plugged into it. You could just close the lid and have the cables come out the back of the lid. Using the lighter the way you are trying would require you to cut a whole in the inner council and then another one out the back. If I am understanding you correctly. The cup holder will get in the way. Hope that helps.

    • @kevrobinson2000
      @kevrobinson2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ClassyTacos Thanks for the quick reply! I really like your setup, but not sure if Im ready to tackle the install (tapping into the cigarette lighter wires specifically). You are correct, my thought was to use the existing lighter, plug a dual cig lighter USB charger into it, connect 2 USB cables, then drill holes in the inner console and the outer console using a grommet for a cleaner look. The USB cables wold pass through both holes through the grommet . The grommet would be in the same spot you installed the USB charger, 3" below the top.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Robinson that sounds like it would work. I think the tap in is better/ cleaner and you get to leave the inner console alone. I understand you have to do what you feel comfortable with. Once you drill the inner section of the console theres no going back. Good luck with the install and thanks for watching.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind words. I'm no expert in electrical wiring. I would have to say no. Not a good idea with a straight hard wire to the battery. Maybe with the proper connections. You would want the connection to at least have an in line fuse for safety, and then to a usb charger. It would be a more difficult install to make it all look clean.

    Would there be any problems using both the console and back 12 v at the same time. I wanting to install a 12 volt cig lighter not just the USB ports. On overlanding trips, I want to charge my power generator using a 12 v port and run my 12 v fridge. Would that be too much draw off of a piggyback single circuit?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how you run the wiring and from where you are drawing power. Look into the Guild Outfitters 12V in cab kit. Here is the install for that. -- th-cam.com/video/AzOr_FG7ZT4/w-d-xo.html
      This kit goes directly into the inverter for 120v in the cab separating the power for the USBs and the 120. This is a safer route than pulling all the power from one wire. I'm not an electrician, I just always go the safer route. Thanks for watching.

    Where did you get your wiring?

      It was from a past project that never happened. The wiring can be created easily with wire and clips. Also, the cheaper USB linked under the video comes with the wiring set up. Thanks for watching.

    Ran into a hiccup. My Tacoma has two charging ports inside the console, I have a console vault so I can’t use them. Can I still tap into them to power the out let I installed into the back of the console?

      @ClassyTacos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya that should work. Since you have the charging ports already you have a couple options. You could use USB extensions or extend the wiring to use those USBs in the rear or just tap into the existing wires. Thanks for watching.

    I just subscribed few months ago, and was on here looking for something to upgrade front cigarette lighter ports would some of this help my 2nd gen

      From what I understand the 2nd gens are similar to the 3rds, I don't see how it could not help. Proper install and parts should work just fine. Thanks for watching.

    Would you be able to put cigaret light there with those wires?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not an electrical expert here, but I can't see why not. It would be using the same power from the cig lighter in the arm rest you already have. Thanks for watching.

    Do you have a link for your wire stripper?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is a link to a decent one-- amzn.to/3jR8DtP The one I have is from the 70s and still going strong. I don't have the brand anymore. The ones I like are a bit old school. Thanks for watching.

    What gauge wire are you using?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don't remember, anything from 16-22 should be good. It's a short run.

    Wouldn't it have made more sense to put one on either side instead of on the face?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really tight on the sides. If anyone slides the front seats back enough while in use, there is a good chance you are going to break at least the charger.
