  • Hello and welcome, thanks for stoping by. Today I'm installing a complete rear 3rd member from East Coast Gear Supply with new 5.29 gears and an ARB air locker. The entire process from ordering to installing was smooth and painless. ECGS really has the set up down. I recommend you call to place an order and ask questions or voice concerns, they will help get you on the right path for your needs. The rear diff install is a much easier process as compared to the front diff. No real tips or tricks other than you do not have to remove the hard break lines at the drums. Just remove the 5 12mil hard line bolts on the housing and be gentle when sliding the axles out. Do not forget to un plug the ABS sensor. Overall it took me about 3 hours total going slow trying to get decent footage for you and I stopped to eat somewhere in there cause I was starving. I did this install after work on Friday as I wanted to leave Saturday for the front diff. I will have the front install up soon. Thanks for watching, don't forget to like and subscribe. Great channel! Watched too many videos last night. I have a few questions on the regear. I never saw a follow up video on what you thought about the 5.29. I also have a 4x4 sport witht an AT so I have the 8in rear end. A lot of folks say not to go 5.29 as the gears are too big for it. Also you said you didn't want to go electric locker. I have heard the opposite that electric is more reliable? Keep up the great videos!

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, much appreciated. I have not done a follow up on the 5.29 as there have been no issues and the overall consensus is that they are amazing. Been great for me with no real insights on a different direction or issues. Love them. As for the diff size debate with 5.29 the difference between the two is marginal. Some folks argue more teeth are stronger, some folks argue less teeth are stronger because the teeth are larger. They work fine for me. Any real strength upgrade requires a 9 inch or a 60, and of those two choices I would go with a 9 inch. Thanks for watching.

  • @TimmyTheToolman
    @TimmyTheToolman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The one issue with having the axles just hanging out of the axle housing like you did because you didn't want to disconnect the brake lines is the weight of the axle and the weight of the brakes and brake drum are resting on the axle seal in the axle housing. That's a lot of weight resting on that seal for an extended time while you're replacing the 3rd member. If it were me, I'd just pull the axles and cap off the brake lines with a 7/32 vacuum cap. With the vacuum caps, there's very little mess and it makes it easy to bleed the brakes afterward.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, and I appreciate the info as I know you have a tremendous amount of useful knowledge. With the axels out just a couple of inches the seal can hold the weight just fine as long as it's not slammed on it. As for the brakes, I'm just showing folks a different way of accomplishing the same task.

  • @LandonWilson88
    @LandonWilson88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really appreciate this video as I'm looking to do this to my sport. before your video I didn't know a company would make pre built diffs how you want. I was quoting having pros install because I didn't have tools to do gears, air port tap, press.
    What is your full tire size, wheel info, lift amount in this video? I'm not interested atm in doing a cab chop relocate to get 35"s on. So I'm trying to decide If 4.88s would be better with 33"s with occasional towing.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m on 35s, 17x9 Dakars with a -25 BS. You would be fine with either 4.88 or 5.29. 5.29 is better for the future incase you change your mind and want bigger tires or a CMR. Either way plan on a tune for the gears and tire size. It will feel like a different truck. There are huge threads on tacomaworld for both 4.88 and 5.29. Ton of info for you to read through and help you make up your mind. Also call ECGS and they will narrow it down for you. Good luck.

    Question for you bro! I’m not too mechanically inclined when it comes to major components on a vehicle like this so I’d likely take it into a shop to have this installed. Theoretically, it would be cheaper from a labor cost/installation cost for a shop to install a pre assembled third member with 5.29 gears with no locker than it would be to just buy the gears and take them to a shop to disassemble the stock third member and install the new gears right?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer is yes, less labor. But you want to check and make sure the shop will do that. Some shops will only do the full install from start to finish as they do not want any issues with someone else installing the gears. It's a good idea to price it out both ways full install or diffs only. And ask what type of guarantee they provide with each install process. Good luck, thanks for watching.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5.29s work out better for me now and the future. Incase I go larger tires I would rather be geared for them now. Also, if you look up gear charts vs tire size online it puts my current set up with 295s on the more power side. I wanted the truck to feel quicker. It worked.

      The factory locker is set up to run under factor specs, like in 4low only. The rear ARB can be run any time even in 2wd, there are no factory limitations. The ARBs can engage at any time as long as you are not giving it gas.

    how are the gears from east coast gear supply holding up? Did your mpg go back to normal with 5.29s?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  ปีที่แล้ว

      gears have been fine, no issues. I follow the recommended gear oil changes. As for my MPG its not great. I drive a ton on the highway and I'm usually trying to get somewhere quickly. Weight, 35s, gear and a loaded rack don't help. I can't really give you a decent base line. I think its good for what it is. For comparison the GX gets worse milage stock. Thanks for watching.

    So we can actually get gears already with 5.29! And air lockers pre set that way I just swap them? Is there any cons or pro of just doing regears?

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, East Coast Gear Supply ships full set ups dialed in to your needs. Just call in to order and they will walk you through the process. The swap sounds easy, but it's still a good amount of work, so be prepared. No cons to just doing gears without a locker. However, fundamentally a locker will make the vehicle more capable off road, of course many other factors come into play with capability. Just comparing a locker to no locker, the locker will be more capable. Also, if you open the diff you might as well add a locker, just do it once, save up more if you have too. Especially for a vehicle you take off road/trails. Thanks for watching.

    • @ClassyTacos
      @ClassyTacos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emadventures6975 Thats a good question. In your case you should call the shop and speak to them directly. I would not want to give you incorrect information. There are different options when you order the rear diff. OEM locker vs no locker. I'm only guessing here but they might have OEM diffs with lockers on hand which have been sent in as cores. They would then rebuild those. You can also message them on IG or FB. Hope that helps.
